Stuck in "Bootloader unlock screen" - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi,
i have TWRP installed with Magisk and ElementalX, everything was working fine, i just got an update for "google play system update" which i had to install.
I did that, but now i'm stuck on Bootloader screen which then boots into Fastboot Mode after a minute. Holding volume buttons and power does not help.
I still have following files that might help:
TWRP installed and the zip file for TWRP(which is still installed and working)
zip file for older version of Magisk
zip file for ElementalX
Is there anything i can do with TWRP or fastboot to keep my current files?
I assume my boot.img is missing due to that update?
I was running the latest OOS version.
Thanks in advance

Did you have any magisk modules installed before the reboot? If so delete them in TWRP data/adb/modules

First of all thanks for helping me, i did have 1 module installed vyper4android, which is already removed.
Also when i switch from Slot it goes past the bootloader screen but its stuck on the loading oneplus logo.
If it helps this is the current folderstructure: https://pastebin.com/xMWeW1uk.
Should there not be a build.prop in there?

Sounds like your Data is corrupt , if it wasnt it would def boot on a different slot.
I would suggest copying your data from your phone and make a back onto PC when phone is booted in TWRP.
Once done, wipe data only in TWRP , phone should boot.
Sorry wish i knew a better solution, been through myself a few times. Good luck:good:

Thanks for the info, i'm backing up my data as we speak but i prefer to wait for perhaps another persons view to see if a complete reset can be prevented with a lesser aggresive approach.
Thanks for your time though, have a nice day!

Can you explain what exactly were you doing ?!
Just hold the power button for 60 seconds or so, it should reboot normally. Did you flash twrp or just do fastboot boot twrp?
I'm new to this while A/B partition. I went through all the steps and my phone is rooted, with Magisk and TWRP. All seems to be fine. My question is this. When I boot to the recovery (TWRP) and choose the reboot option it defaults to Current Slot: Partition B. If I reboot to partition B it goes back to TWRP. I have to select Partition A to get the device to boot to the system.
Is this normal? Do I need to set it up in a different way?

after that was done i tried to flash it but everytime i tried it just crashed. a little time later after trying some more times i found that i started it in the bootloader and it ended up with me stuck in a bootloop. again i might not have explained enough. i am huge noob so i really need help.

To keep TWRP as the phones recovery, you'd first need to do as you did "Fastboot boot twrp" but that command will only allow you to boot into TWRP through your pc or whatever you ran that command on. After you've entered that temporary recovery, you'll need the TWRP installer .zip file, and flash that inside of that temporary TWRP. Then you can reboot into recovery on your phone again since it has been installed to one of the partitions.

You have to flash magisk after flashing twrp or else you are going to get this bootloop you are talking about
phone open again
my phone is back up and running again. i changed the partitian slot from A( the broken one with no OS) to B(the unchanged one) and it is now working again. if anyone is having the same problem the try to change to the second slot. it happend in twrp enchilada 3.2.2-0 if it is important. thank you all for your support.
I may be mistaken but I believe all you need to do is flash magisk to get up and running again

Why? You should be able to just flash the TWRP installer into TWRP and so its flashed into both boot_a and boot_b. It should boot ok to system from there, Magisk is just another mod to the boot partitions, like a custom kernel, etc. It should not be necessary at all, why you guys keep sayin Magisk is necessary for anything? it isn't.

Because you do. The OP6 will not boot with custom recovery unless it's rooted. I believe this is because the recovery and boot partitions are merged on this device. You're welcome to bootloop all day if you don't believe us.

Asking "why?" is not to not believe you, and the personal bootloop all day attack is out of the matter. TWRP is flashed on the ramdisk and should boot stock, unless something derped, if it doesn't boot I honeslty don't understand why, what is the exact reason? TWRP installer doesn't overwrite the boot, just patches it to have a mini recovery on it. It should boot...

I don't know for sure either, beyond what I said above. But everyone who has reported not flashing magisk has bootlooped.
If I sounded snippy, it was only because your post above was appearing to deny the reality of what is a very well-known issue with this phone.

I am not denying anything! just surprised because on TWRP website they clearly state that no post-twrp-flashing step is needed:
https://twrp.me/oneplus/oneplus6.html
The OnePlus 6 uses the newer AB partition scheme first introduced on the Pixel 1. As such there is no recovery partition. Instead, the recovery is part of the boot image. You will temporarily boot TWRP to perform and later perform a more permanent TWRP installation. First download the TWRP zip file directly on your device. If you don't download the zip file to your device first for any reason, you will need to adb push the zip to the device because MTP is not currently working on the OnePlus 6 in TWRP. If you are unable to use adb, you can also use a USB stick with an OTG cable, if you have those handy. Power off the device. Hold volume up to get into fastboot mode. Run this command on your computer: fastboot boot twrp-3.2.1-0-enchilada.img
In TWRP, tap on Install and browse to the zip and install it (the zip will probably be in /sdcard/Downloads). TWRP will now be installed to both slots. TWRP is now installed and you can reboot and use your device as normal.
MTP is disabled because it causes a kernel panic sometimes with the stock kernel.

I think most people have moved to the official version. If it doesn't need magisk to avoid a bootloop, that's news to me. Not saying it's not the case, but I haven't seen any mention of it.

Updated to 9.5.9 and now it reboots into TWRP over and over.

I followed the previously rooted guide to update to 9.5.9 and now when the phone reboots, it gets to the unlock screen and immediately tells me its shutting down and reboots back into twrp again. How do i fix this? Please help and thank you.
what method did you use (there are a million rooted guides)? did u get the correct OS OTA for you model phone? provide us more info please.
Looks like i forgot to turn off the magisk modules. I had to go into twrp and delete them all and re download the modules. silly me
I'm having a similar issue. I can't figure out what to do, but I i went and deleted all the zip files for magisk but after reinstalling magisk thru twrp, I get stuck booting to recovery everytime. I can someone help point me in the right direction?

I stuck at the same situation. Can you flashboot flash boot.img and then it can boot normally?
Same problem here.
Situation before flash: stock 9.5.8, Magisk, a number of Magisk modules
What I did:
* downloaded 9.5.9 with Oxygen Updater
* disabled Magisk modules
* rebooted
* installed 9.5.9 from the builtin System Update
* went to Magisk, installed it with After OTA
* rebooted to recovery
* installed TWRP and Magisk
* cleared Dalvik
* rebooted to system
The phone seems to start normally, but when it reaches the unlock screen it immediately goes to Power Off, then it reboots to TWRP (not power off). From TWRP I can decrypt data ok etc.
I tried reinstalling the boot loader, OTA image, TWRP, Magisk - same result. Rebooting to system from TWRP just goes back to Power Off then TWRP.

If this is any help in the future, whilst I don't have twrp, I install the updates via local update in settings > system > updates and then before reboot I go to magisk manager, and install magisk to second slot and reboot. Never had a problem and I'm on 9.5.9 now. The only modules I disable, update, or remove are the magisk ROMs available here such as no limits, as they are usually version specific.

That's exactly what I did. It landed me to the bootloop.
All you guys had to do is,
Install the full uddate zip in twrp,
Install the latest twrp zip,
Reboot recovery,
Install latest magisk,
Reboot system,
Hope this helps, cheers
Update: I can break out of the loop from TWRP > Advanced > Fix Recovery Bootloop. That lets me boot normally, but loses root. As soon as I reinstall Magisk I get back to the bootloop.

I'm in the same boat.
My twrp doesn't offer to decrypt partition_b so I cannot manually install Magisk on the new partition.
This seems to be a common problem when updating rooted Oneplus 7 pro and I haven't found a update guide which actually works every time. Last update to 9.5.8 I had the same issue where I couldn't get into oxygen os because it turned itself off and when twrp opened I couldn't decrypt the data. I couldn't find a solution last time and I had to full wipe and start from scratch. Now I don't want the same to happen so I hope someone can post a guide how to do the update successfully.

Sometimes you might be on the wrong active slot, you can change this by using fastboot set_active a or fastboot set_active b. TWRP seems to like changing your slot but will tell you when it does. If you're getting stuck try changing slot and booting.

I tried that too. When I switch to the other slot I get to a menu where I can only wipe data, reboot to boot loader, or reboot to recovery. Not particularly useful.
Hey guys!
I'm having the same problem. No matter how I try to update it will reboot to stock recovery.
I was wondering if any of you have /Data converted to f2fs? Maybe it could be culprit...

What I had to do here was go to fastboot mode and flash twrp img. Then in TWRP I flash the TWRP zip file and magisk and rebooted. All good
Alright so I fixed mine. I went and just removed all the modules while I was in twrp. To do that go to Advanced, then file manager or whatever it says, find the adb folder and from there look for a folder named Modules and just delete them all. From there just reinstall magisk through twrp and it should all work.

Thank you sir, this fixed it for me, too. So the missing link was that Magisk modules have to be removed completely, not just disabled, before upgrading. Removing all directories except .core from /data/adb/modules allows the phone to boot normally, with Magisk enabled.

Can't reboot to Recovery after upgrade to Android 10

Hello everyone,
As I mentioned in the title, since I upgraded to Android 10, can't boot to recovery.
Dowloaded latest version of the Adb kit, and while issuing
adb reboot recovery
the phone reboots but goes to normal boot.
Tried manually (power + vol down etc.) and when choosing Recovery - same thing happens.
Needless to say that my laptop is authorized debug device and phone is in debug mode etc. - I have done this many times before Android 10 update.
All I try to do is to sideload the latest OTA as I did many times before because my phone is rooted and the updates do not install automatically.
Pixel (First generation)
Rooted with Magisk
Bootloader unlocked
Stock recovery (using TWRP without installing it when flashing Magisk)
Hope somebody can advise. Obviously there is something new in Android 10 which has to be set (like the need for debugging authorization for example, which I already did).
Thank you
John
Im getting a similar problem. I get stuck on th Google logo screen. I cant hard-reset, recovery mode or boot, the only things that works is th barcode.
Android 10 changed something in the ramdisk that you can't install TWRP directly on the phone. You have to boot it via PC using "fastboot boot <insert twrp image name>.img"
You can try installing twrp to ramdisk. Put twrp 3.3.1-0.img in your devices storage and then fastboot twrp 3.3.0-0 (disable pin etc first) then once it's booted go to advanced and select install to ramdisk and select the 3.3.1-0.img and it should install it. You may get a not enough storage error on 10/Q (I did) bit worth a punt. Make a back up first as usual, if no good flash a fresh factory.img and see if that cures it and then restore your apps/data etcfrom your Google back up (if you use it)
Good luck

Thank you for the advice, however as I mentioned in my original post I don't want to install TWRP permanently , and the problem is that I cannot go to the stock recovery mode which has no connection to TWRP. There is something with Android 10 which changed since 9 and I'm interested to find what. Everything worked fine before the upgrade.
Also, the option to flash factory image and restore (I also have Titanium in addition to Google backup) is a too much of a hassle. I use this phone for real, not only to play with it.
Anyway, again thank you for your input.
John
Sorry mate, re read your OP. I just tried booting into the aosp recovery and got the same issue! My guess is its magisk as I could boot into the aosp recovery prior to installing it. Re flash or restore the previous boot.img or a stock boot.img and it should boot into aosp recovery again. Magisk must be installing to or patching the aosp recovery ramdisk and stopping it booting. Other than that just fastboot twrp and use that.
Edit: it's magisk, restored original images and it booted into aosp recovery first try.
I've had no problems installing TWRP 3.3.0.0 normally after using an *.img file to get TWRP started. EDIT: and booting into it.

You are right. I did open Magisk and from the uninstall options choosed "Restore images" (no need to do complete uninstall, which is the other option). After that I was able to boot in recovery etc. I guess this is what you meant in your PS. At the end re-flashed Magisk and all is back to normal.
I will alert the Magisk team about the issue (if they are not already aware).
Case closed.
Thanks again.

It is a mess. It works with Pixel (I have this one and can confirm) and supposedly Pixel 2. It won't work for brand new phones arriving with factory installed Android 10.
Read the following:
https://twrp.me/site/update/2019/10/23/twrp-and-android-10.html#
After that, if you want to try, go to the page below to find instructions for your device. Note that the list is by manufacturer, so if you are looking for Pixel, it is under Google.
https://twrp.me/Devices/
Just in case - backup and have the factory image for your phone handy in case something goes wrong. For google phones you can download the image and see instructions here:
https://developers.google.com/android/images
Note that I never installed TWRP permanently, so I can't say if the permanent installation will work (I think it should, but not sure). Typically I just load TWRP and use it to flash pakages, but at the end I'm keeping the stock recovery.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks. Yea from what I can tell no one has had luck actually installing it on the Pixel with Android 10 yet. I'm familiar with how to fix everything if something goes wrong. I would try but others have already tried and failed. It won't install for them.
firstly, dont use whatever ****ty platform-tools you are using, get them from here.
secondly, you dont install recovery on android 10 yet, it doenst work. you have to just boot to twrp using `fastboot boot twrp.img` once you are in bootloader mode.

Help, I can flash and boot LineageOS but not OxygenOS

Hi, as the title explains I can flash and boot into lineage os but when I try to flash a stock OxygenOS signed flashable zip from this thread (https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/oneplus-6-mirrors-official-oxygen-os-t3792244)
and when I boot to system, the screen doesn't show a boot logo, it just goes black for a few seconds before rebooting back to twrp (also if it helps, when it goes to twrp all the files are gibberish, I have to shut off the phone and boot into it from fastboot or I can't see any files).
This all started because I misunderstood the instructions and tried to flash an ota package which then broke the system, it's working now but I'd much rather use OOS as Lineage is missing a lot of the features I'm used to on Oxygen.
I've also tried the "flash-all-partitins-fastboot" from https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/rom-stock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-6-t3796665 but unfortunately that gave the same issue, it just went back to recovery and wouldn't load OOS.
If anyone has any ideas on how to get back to oxygen that'd be super helpful! I'm considering using the MSM tool but I'd rather not have to start from scratch and lose all my files.
I'm just guessing, but there might be something wrong with your TWRP, did you try re-flashing it?

I should've clarified in the post, I mean all the files are gibberish (as in not decrypted I think?) but when I
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
it works fine and I can see all the files.
I've probably tried flashing it 4 times through twrp but every time it just does the same thing, boot to system just shows a black screen for a few seconds then reboots to twrp.
I'd love to use blu_spark like everyone recommends but I can't find the blu_spark recovery for the op6, only their kernel.
The reason why it's gibberish is because your device is encrypted and you need to input the password in the twrp to be able to access it. Seems the twrp doesn't detect the encryption correctly so there might be something wrong with it.
Here is the bluespark twrp https://github.com/engstk/android_device_oneplus_enchilada/releases

I just tried with blu_spark and the same thing happens but I realised something else, twrp only doesn't work on slot A.
If I see that it didn't decrypt the files, I can set B to active, reboot to recovery, and it works perfectly.
I noticed after one of the failed boots it switched the active slot to B even though I had set it to A before flashing. So every time it doesn't show the logo or anything, it sets the active slot from A to B and reboots to recovery.
Also I just looked and from the Backup page, it shows 2.7 GB for system on slot A and 1.7GB on slot B so I'm going to try wiping both and reflashing the flashable signed zip on each then twrp.
UPDATE: Just did that and the twrp installer was giving an error saying unsupported android version so I looked and system is only 4MB after flashing that package (OnePlus6Oxgygen_22_OTA_034_all_...zip), I'm trying an older one (...OTA_026...zip) to see if that actually works.
So I tried with the older one and lineage and they both still left the system partition at 4MB and the blu_spark twrp installer isn't detecting an android version. The system image partition is at 2.6GB if that means anything.
Oh wait more update, I'm dumb and shut off the phone while taking the case off (got stuck and it was pushing the power button) and even though the twrp installer couldn't detect anything and twrp said No OS installed when trying to boot to system, lineage just started up, no problem. I am very confused I miss when there was one system partition.
How are you flashing the OS?

I'm using twrp, blu_spark and normal, and both have the same result. They can flash lineage and it runs fine, but oxygen refuses to boot and just switches the active slot and goes to recovery instead.
I also tried the fastboot rom flashing thing from the thread I linked to in the OP and it's the same thing, just goes back to recovery and wont boot.
P.S. I'm currently copying over /sdcard to an external drive and if I can't figure out how to fix this by the time that's done, I'll just use MsmDownloadTool and start over.
And you are wiping each time before flashing it, right? If it is the case then the download tool is probably the easiest way to go about it, rather than spending days troubleshooting it.

I've tried it with and without wiping and it always seems to do the same thing either way, works with LOS not with OOS. Thanks for the help! but yeah I think I'm just going to end up using the download tool once everything's over.

urgent: oneplus 7 pro TWRP bootloop

I'm very new to everything related to rooting and I think I screwed up, I'm not even sure if this is what a bootloop is.
My device won't boot back into android, I've tried to look for a solution but I don't understand any of the terms those people use.
I followed a tutorial to help me root my phone which I think might have worked but now I can't do anything.
I installed the latest twrp .zip on my phone and elementalX (I think I downloaded it for android 10 instead of 11), I tried a couple of commands in the terminal suggested by other people but none of them did anything.
I really want my phone back, even if that means that it won't be rooted, I made a backup of my data so all that matters to me is that I can use my phone again.
If you know anything that can help me, please try to explain it in a way I might understand as I don't even really know what flashing means.

Good then try the below steps
This sequence has worked for me every time
1. Reboot twrp/lineage recovery, format data. Reboot bootloader
2. Fastboot boot into TWRP FBEv2
3. Sideload official TWRP 3.5.2.9-0 installer (found on TWRP website). Reboot recovery
4. Copy OOS 11.zip to internal storage. Or OTG drive,, Flash OOS 11.zip. Reboot recovery again
5. Format data in OOS stock recovery & Reboot
6. After boot into OOS 11, just local upgrade rom .zip again, you will have OOS in both slots
