I am going to buy a car charger for my new HOX, but it only has one 2.1A usb output. I know the charging current of the HOX wall charger is 1A, but I think 2.1A should work fine or even charge faster. But my concern is if the larger current would hurt my battery or shorten its lifetime.
Some ppl said the phone itself would take 1A current anyway due to some kind of threshold control inside, but I am not sure about it. So pls let me know if you know the truth. Appreciate it!
ps. I sent an email about this problem to HTC customer care 2 days ago but still no response yet. I will post the official answer when I get their answer.
UPDATE: Here is the official response from HTC about charging current, it seems that HOX does not intelligently control its charging current:

Yeah I'd like to know. I never opened the oem charger and am currently using my bb playbook charger which shoots out 1.8A. I'm hoping the answer is no damage with a faster charge.
Yep, it'll work fine. Chargers don't "push" the charge, the phone pulls it. If the phone is only designed to charge at 1000ma, then it will only pull that current. So you could use a 10 amp charger and it will be fine, only difference is that with that high a capacity, you'll be able to charge 10 phones at the full charging rate. Changing the voltage, that's a different story.

There is no problem of the voltage of the car charger because that is 5V as the oem charger, but do you know if HOX is designed to intelligently pull the proper amount of current? or will it take any current fed to it?

All Li-ion batteries have intelligent charging circuits. Otherwise, it will simply explode.
I won't worry about 2.1A at all. The problem is other way around, i.e. whether or not the phone will take more than 500ma from your 2.1A charger. It depends on how your charger is wired. If the phone only detects a generic USB connection, it will only charge max 500ma. It requires special wiring from the USB port to allow phone to switch to AC charging mode to draw more current. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell until you have the charger and try it out. One thing for sure, those chargers designed for iPhone/iPad typically won't be recorgnzied by other phones as AC chargers.

Gotcha, the car charger I am going to buy is for iphone, but it also claims to be able to charge phones of htc, sony etc. So I guess it is possible to have the ac charging detection.

My money is on that it won't be recognized as AC charger. iPhone has special requirement on data PIN wiring that is not compatible with other phone. Yes, you can charge other phones but probably not at anything over 500ma.
Pls see my updates, it seems that 2.1A charger is not safe.

was thinking to use XPZ wall charger with input 250mA and output of 1500mA, will it damage my SBH 20 if i charge it with XPZ wall charger? don't feel like bring so many wall charger when travel.
oh, my power bank is 7800mAh with 1 output port 1A and another 1.5A. can i use the 1A to charge?

You can allways use a charger with higher Amps (mA).
Only importent thing is you have 5V.
Using an output with higher Amps sometimes reduces charging time.

If the device is properly designed 5.3V is no problem.
IIRC the stock wall charger is 1,5A (1500mA). It will theoretically charge the 2,3Ah battery in roughly 1h 32min.
The word "charger" is a bit misleading, because it actually is just a power supply. The actual charger is built into the phone. The phone will regulate the current (amperage) and charge the battery using the most suitable current. As long as the power supply is rated at 5V, it doesn't really matter if it's a 1,5A or a 5A power supply. The phone will take what it needs and nothing more. The power supply will not "force" any amperes into the phone.
Charging via USB from the computer will take longer, because USB ports on computers only give a maximum of 0,5A. The theoretical charging time will therefore be three times longer than with the stock wall charger. Repeated charging at such low currents is not recommended. It's best to use a power supply with enough current and let the phone do the rest.
In other words: You can use just about any Micro USB wall charger, as long as it's of sufficient amperage (not too low). I would also stay well clear of the cheapest chinese chargers. You never know what they will do.

The QC 2.0 spec can use higher than 5v and as much as 3A.
Several 2a and 3a chargers on ebay and amazon for less than $15. Works fine when I use a generic 3a charger since the phone will scale power on need and availability.
I ended up buying the original charger linked in my first post. Will report back.
Isn't the quick charging a factor of voltage as well as amperage? Simply buying a 2am charger won't get you the built in quick charging if you don't have the voltage to back it up..

You are correct.
Ok I got the charger. While I have installed it, I haven't had time to test it fully.
When connected, it does display the Adaptive Charger Connected message.
How it differs from the Samsung home charger, it adds 12V to the mix
Charging at 5V is 10W, 9V is 14.4W, and 12V is 14.4W. (As is labeled. I haven't measured)

Depends on scale. It's more about the supply at the end really. From a car charger your converting 12v (supply limit amp) to 5v 5a or 12v 2a easy. Since its DC to DC stepping is fairly straight forward. The phone will never hit the amp limit in a car. Unless you drive a soap box. Smart chargers are like having mutiple chargers in the same device. It detects what's being asked and delivering accordingly. Much like pressing your thumb on a water hose and watching the water shoot out further.
As a side note just to be sure anyone isn't thinking about upping the voltage on a charger DONT. It doesn't work that way lol. Do a quick Google search on voltage conversion and you will understand how electrical supply can change.
The Powermod charger charges my phone in the car at least as fast as the OEM Samsung charger.... Highly recommended.

It's plugged into a 12v hub that I hardwired to the car's electrical system. I hid the hub behind the dash and then ran the charging cable up through the middle of my dash panels. It is perfectly positioned and comes out of the dash directly where my phone mount is located. I had to disassemble my dash to do it. Wasn't a big deal for me, as I already had my dash apart to flush mount my Nexus 7 as a "detachable" head unit for my sound system.
Does this do Fast Charge like the ac outlet ?

I have bought two different chargers and neither of them can really even charge the phone. The lock screen says it's charging slowly, and the battery meter acts like it's charging, but it doesn't actually charge. The chargers were both Quick Charge 3.0 chargers too. None of my old phone chargers with a type-c adapter will charge the phone either.

Have you tried different cables?
Every charger I own will charge this phone. My Samsung, pixel, Motorola, etc usb type-c chargers will all work.

Thanks! Now, what about if I wanted it to just charge normally (not rapidly or slowly) for if if I wanted to leave it charging overnight? Don't think I need to spend the extra money on rapid chargers for that scenario...

No idea. Honestly, I don't know of anyone who consciously needs to control the speed of their charge. I avoid charging overnight by rapid charging during the day at work.
does it really need PD? they are kind of expensive and there are chargers out there with 5V, 6V, 9V, 12V @ 3A

Essential confirmed on their subreddit that it does not support Qualcomm Quick Charge. It supports USB PD.

I'm not sure how Android is programmed to display "Rapidly Charging", but I'm sure it's not by charging standard. Probably based on supplied power, but it definitely doesn't charge as fast as the stock charger. I noticed this with my QC chargers. It will say rapidly charging for a couple minutes and then just not charge at all or say charging slowly. Frustrating as hell so I bought an extra USB PD charger.
My Samsung chargers all work, and charge the phone to 100%. They just say charging, not quick charging, but whatever... The % goes up.

Try using the Ampere app on the Play store. It will show you what amounts of current etc is being used to charge the phone..

Yeah...it doesn't. I'm such a tool I assumed it did and bought two Ankar QC3 wall chargers and a Tronsmart QC3 car charger. None of them are able to charge the phone at all, says that it's charging slowly but doesn't seem as though it's charging at all.

Phone needs a charger with USB-C Power Delivery and not QC. Anker has at least one model and Incipio has one as well. There are many others on Amazon.. The cool thing about those is that they also change my XPS-13. Only carry one charger when I travel.
I've got a few QC 2/3 chargers and a few USB-C PD chargers and what I've found is that depending on which USB-C to USB-A makes a difference whether I get rapid charge or not.
I'm slowly converting over to USB-C to USB-C but it is stupid expensive for some things like the power packs with USB-C...
Anyway, try a few different cables and see if it works for you, also it seems to work a tiny bit better on the Oreo Beta however my QC 2.0 car charger doesn't charge as fast as it did on 7.1.1 but luckily the car chargers are the cheapest USB-C PD items to buy, roughly about the same price as a cable.
One last note, the same charger and cable don't always go into rapid charging mode so replugging the cable in sometime kicks in rapid mode for me.

Can anyone let me know the risks, if any, of using the OP7 pro warp charger with other devices? I live in the UK if the voltage in matters.
I wanted to have one charger to charge my OP7pro, Sabatt e12 earphones and Nintendo Switch (undocked).
Anything I should think of? I don't know anything about voltages or fast charging. The headphones say to use a charger that is 5v/1a or "risk damaging".
Can anyone advise?

Warp charge is 5v/6a, but whatever device you are charging should limit the voltage and amps. But ultimately yes you could damage your earphones.
It depends. Like Konfuzion has said, every device should have overvoltage protection or something, even earbuds. But it will be better (more safe) to use regular 5V/1A charger instead your Warp charger.
If your device use 5V as a power source, there shouldn't be any problem to use the Warp Charger. I've already used it to charge a Nintendo 2DS and Bluetooth devices and it charges normally, because is the device who control the power consumption (and therefore, the current)

The old dash chargers I believe had some technology that negotiated with the phone before it put out the full amps, I'm pretty sure the warp chargers/cables have that too. When you plug your phone in, you will notice it doesn't warp charge immediately, it charges normally for a second then warp charges, so any device plugged in that can't negotiate with the charger should cap out at 2a,which is where the device your charging's protection comes in. You should be fine
Edit: be careful with your switch though, they are known to brick with 3rd party charges (google/youtube that) but it might have just been crappy 3rd party chargers, I don't have a switch to test

Actually, no. If you use a crappy cable, you could get (at least) the cable on fire (It won't happen, but technically is posible if you made your own cable with a very very thin conductor).
As I said before, is the device who limit the current at charging. In the case of the dash/warp charger, the cable has "a little extra" that allow the high current, and that is why you can't use any cable to get the dash/warp experience (if you want more info, read https://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/comments/928iqn/whats_the_difference_between_dash_charge_cables/ )
