Why or how is OnePlus making a better OS than Pixel ?

I don't mean to rag on the Pixel 3, I have the 3 XL and am pretty happy with it. But compared to my 2 XL, it's really not that much better. I was very happy with my Pixel 2 XL, and I'm so so on my Pixel 3 XL so far.
It's funny how OnePlus have taken the lead on better performing stock Android phones.
Clearly the 6T will be a smoother more fluid operating phone compared to the Pixel 3. Yet this is Google's thing, they created Android, they make vanilla Android. And they charge a much higher price for their Pixel vs a OnePlus, yet somehow OnePlus is besting them on developing a smoother better performing phone.
It's not rocket science what OPO is doing, Google can easily match and beat them in development of the Pixel OS, I just don't know why they aren't ?
Basically the OnePlus phones have taken over the old Nexus spot, and doing better at then Google did. And now Google can't even make their $900 flagship as smooth and fast as a $550 phone.
I'm thinking and hoping the Pixel 4 line will be a major jump for them. I think that will be the full HTC design team and also Android Q will be better and the Snapdragon 855 is supposed to be a major new processor. Plus all the criticism Google's getting on the Pixel 3, I expect next year's phones to be night and day better.

Yeah no. They arent. I have the OP6 and while it is really FAST it is not as smooth as the pixel xl 3 and nor will the 6T be smoother. I do think it will be faster! Not smoother through. There are still dropped frames on the OP6. Not many but there are more often the pixel devices

Don't the One+'s only have HD screens, delayed updates, and ****ty camera's? Last I heard, yes to all. Those three are HUGE dealbreakers for me. And also why they can charge less. I don't think One+ wins at all versus the Pixel 2's or 3's. If the Pixel's used cheaper panels and such, they would probably be a lot cheaper too. And I highly doubt they will out perform the 2's or 3's. In my experience, the only phone's that get any with these are the newer iPhone's.

I agree with most of this, I'm buying the OnePlus 6T when it's available and it will become my daily. My Pixel 3 XL will be my backup just like I did with the OnePlus 5T and my Pixel 2 XL.
I'll take my Pixel when I know I'm going to be taking a lot of pictures but for the most part I'll be using the OnePlus.
When I had my Pixel 2 XL and bought the OnePlus 5T it was just way to easy to put the pixel on the back burner.

The 6 upped the camera game quite a bit, enough so that it will probably satisfy any person I know real life who doesn't see the camera as a primary use of the device. I also think update frequency as a feature is somewhat overrated in general but particularly when compared to someone like Oneplus who have been reasonably timely as of late. IMO a lot of the grief this phone gets in terms of the GUI cludge come from it's rather horrid gesture navigation, poor app switching, and drawer access, all of course related. It's been called out in a number of reviews for those things and I think it's fair comment. They gestures themselves are not ergonomic, lack cohesion, and fail to take advantage of the space lost to the nav area by not removing it all together. That's a lot of fail right where you can't miss it. I'm here but I wouldn't put down OnePlus, their stuff is pretty darn good, not just good for the price.

Google makes the OS and your saying OnePlus makes a better OS. That's silly.
They may tweak or add skins but they don't make crap. So, If you compare apples to apples for hardware and then evaluate stock Android vs OOS, l would be surprised if it were significantly faster.
Doesn't Google downclock the 845? Yes 2500mhz and OP 6 clocks at 2800. With only 3300 mAh battery, that may equal worse battery life, I dunno. But the P3 XL and OP6 are not equal hardware to evaluate the OS.

i used the oneplus gestures on my 6 (just to get a feel, i enabled nav buttons then hid them and downloaded the op gestures)
the swipe area at the bottom of the screen is almost un-selectable, when my keyboard comes up i cant select anything where the swipe gesture recognises a swipe, does this happen on the Pixel? i thought maybe its just how its implemented on the oneplus 6

It's been fine, I just tried both keyboards without anyt problems. You do have a brief return window to play with if you want to verify it yourself. I ran into that on an AOSP ROM and never did find an answer.

I miss some of the features of my OP6..
Like screenshot editing options in terms of cropping (not finding it on PX3L)
Using OnePlus Gestures app from playstore definitely makes things SO MUCH BETTER.
But i am noticing stuttering and such on P3XL , but then again with 8GB of ram on my OP6 i noticed stuttering and a lot of visual hiccups that literally should never happen.
What else? I'm not missing else much from the Op6....

I am also moving from the OnePlus6 to the Pixel 3 XL which should be in my hands on the 01/11 (for you americans thats 1st Nov lol) and the OnePlus gestures is the frst thing I will be putting on as well as hiding the nav bar to get the same sort of experience.
And to reiterate what others have said the UI on the OnePlus 6 is fast but definitely not that smooth, camera is now pretty poor too.

OP6 is clocked slightly more than 10% higher than P3, thus faster.

The feature i miss the most from OP6 is the app locker and the quick gestures that you use to draw while your screen is off. The applocker IMO is excellent since when you go into recents it will block the thumbnail for privacy before you put your PIN/fingerprint. Any of you found any 3rd party apps as good as these for the P3XL?

Cropping is there, along with a plethora of other options. Just got to take time to learn how to use the editor

thoughts on how this phone will compare to pixel4xl?

I realize this is kind of a ridiculous threat because that phone is at least 4 months away, although I'm going to be in the market for a new phone, and as far as I can deal there are only two options for unlocked phones on Verizon.
seems like this phone has been getting fantastic reviews. Harvard do you think that the OnePlus will be able to match the hardware? Google seems to have always skimped on the hardware. I'm hoping for at least 8 gig of RAM on the Pixel 4. That being said do you think it is worth waiting for that phone or should I just pull the trigger? Currently have 2 XL and it is running great, I'm just getting bored with it

I assume the pixel 4 will be like the pixel 2 but with hardware upgrades. If you're bored with the pixel OnePlus is a good alternative.
The camera will be a downgrade if you do get the 7pro

I still think there will be a notch or a cut out but it will be a much improved over the 3 XL design.
At least 6gb of ram and better battery life is a must .
The screen on the 3 XL was very good and I'm sure the 4 will be the same but I can't see Google going for the 90hz.
Considering the pixel 3 is still the best cam with an older sensor. I could only imagine what Google could do with updated lens. Maybe wide or telephoto too.
Will be released with Q as well which is looking promising

Have you seen the proposed apple and Google handset forms. Expect a move back to big square camera mods, and big square panels. Yikes.

Well from what I heard about the pixel3's, OnePlus might have the pixel4xl beat in speed and performance. The OP7P has UFS3.0 and we have a RAM boost, not to mention other variables that contribute to a faster device like almost stock android with OOS. But that is comparing it to an older model... I guess for a final answer we will have to wait until the pixel4xl is released. I'll say the price gap might be significant enough to lean towards the OP7P though.

Pixel 4 needs major changes. Pixel 3 was a step back from pixel 2xl for me personally. 4gb ram with poor ram management made for a frustrating device. Pixel 2xl was one of my favorite phones ever. OP7 pro is very smooth like I was accustomed to with pixel 2xl. Yes camera is not as good but with some patience you can still get quality shots.

It's hard to tell, I would say the 7 pro will be faster but pixel will have better cameras.
It's easy for Google this year though, make a phone with the specs of the 7 pro, no notch and put their camera on it. Even with a 60hz screen I would be tempted. If they do something different I'm not sure what they are up to.

With a once a year concervative release, the Pixel line had always been behind. Except if you want a camera phone...

Google didn't have a good smartphone since Motorola Nexus 6. Before that, Google's (Samsung) Galaxy was a great phone. Except Google pays Samsung or OnePlus to make a new Google phone, I wouldn't bother. They are 2 years behind OnePlus and they are focused on ai and ar, not how to make good smartphone. Also, Google charges too much for crappy phones.
Next great phone will probably be new Samsung Note. The only thing missing on 7 pro would be lack of DeX (hopefully we get that with new iteration of Android OS), and 5x+ "periscope" optical zoom.

Pixel phones have never had particularly exciting hardware, especially if you consider how late in the year it launches. Once again, it seems like it will have a slightly dated look with semi-large bezels for a flagship. Their only redeeming quality is the software and the camera (which we know is also mostly about awesome software).

Since the leaked specs of that just came out... What do you guys think? Would anyone consider that phone over this? I'm looking to get a new phone in next few months just trying to figure out options for a Verizon unlocked bootloader

Pixel might not beat OnePlus 7 Pro in terms of smoothness and speed.. but camera is a different story.. I have 7 Pro and planning to buy Pixel 4.. if the performance degradation is really noticeable, I will return Pixel 4 and keep OnePlus 7 Pro

I think Pixel 4/4XL will be far superior to OnePlus 7 Pro in the camera department only at a guess.

agreed, I think Camera is the one area that pixel is always king.
although that aside, I was disappointed to see that it is only rumored to have six gig of RAM. I can't really see any of the other specs being better than what we currently have. Honestly I'm debating between the 7 plus, before XL, or the next one plus. All I really care about is performance and speed. I'm not a huge photographer

If thats the case then OnePlus 7 Pro is definitely the phone to get.

Don't forget that by when Pixel 4 releases, Oneplus will have a successor to this phone a month later

Big Nexus / Pixel fan here, having owned almost all Nexus phones, and the Pixel 2 XL and now the 3 XL, and only owned the original OnePlus One, but I have to say, that beast had a long life, with ROM's it performed very well for several years, a good 3+ years the OPO was still fast and smooth. But the stock Android experience doesn't seems as cool as it used to, seems a little laggy sometimes, or not as warp speed smooth.
Whereas Oxygen OS is super fast, extreme smooth, and has extra tweaks and more customization baked in. OnePlus phones is sort of like a Pixel that's running a custom ROM and customer tweaked kernel.
So this is how I see it playing out;
- Pixel 4 XL wins in the camera department, and of course first for updates direct from Google. And the little things like wireless charging and official IP68 rating.
- OnePlus 7 Pro wins other areas; smoother faster OS experience. Maybe better display screen. Faster charging. More customization baked in.

You buy a phone when you need it, simple as that. Something new is always around the corner, but if you wait for that you will be waiting forever.

Well seems I'll be posting the first post here. Planning to get the P4A at release to upgrade my pixel 2xl.
Debating whether to get the 4 or the 4a, but the better battery life, dual SIM support are better for me than the soli radar crap.

Following, in the same boat, Pixel 2xl camera crashed and unusable for a month now. Phone becoming so slow.

sucks to hear about your camera crashing man. Roll back to Android 9 and it should work, at least that's what I read about that issue. Seems that some hardware drivers got messed up while upgrading from 9 to 10, which is whats causing the crash for the camera in ur case and various other hardware issues with other users. I don't know if it would fix it, worth the shot. Make sure u flash the full factory image, and to make it brand new don't take out the -w and wipe ur device completely clean.
If it does work try to upgrade to 10 by flashing the full factory image.

I would try that but then I would be locked out of my work computer. Have to have camera to scan code. But definitely will try that after I decide on which phone to upgrade to. Twice after this post my phone quit responding to touches and had to reboot it to work.

In the same boat here. I have the 2XL and though I'd love to keep this phone forever, it's starting to experience its fair share of issues. I'm waiting for the 4A. A few of my friends have the 4 and from their experience, Soli hasn't been worth it. Lots of complaints about missing the fingerprint scanner. Besides, not many Android apps support Face ID.
Unlikely the 4A will have an IP68 (or any) rating but that seems like the only downfall of the device. I'm excited to keep my fingerprint reader, dual SIM, and regain a headphone jack.

There is not much price difference with the current discounts that's why I'm torn.
Pixel 4xl
Pros: better soc, better screen, marginally better camera, IP68
Cons: battery life
Pixel 4a
Pros: battery life, dual SIM
Cons: mid-range SOC, marginally worse camera, smaller screen, no IP rating.
As far as the SOC goes, the 730 soc processor should be the same performance as the pixel 3XL in apps which is fine, but will be like the 2xl in games due to the much worse GPU. Should be a whole lot more efficient on battery though. I don't play much games but I hate stutters and lags. Carrying more than 1 phone is also a pain in my a**. I really hope it performs well with no stutters.

I recently upgraded to the 3a xl from the 2 xl. I love it. My wife had the original pixel xl so it was time to upggrade again. I was going to wait for the 4axl since i love the 3a so much. But as was said with the price drop I decided to get the 4xl. The main reason being I had my 3a for 3 days and accidently dropped it in water now I had flagship phones for a long time so i wasnt worried till i realized this phone is not ip rated. so i had to warrenty exchange it after only 3 days. So now my wife has 3a and I have 4. I have to say despite all the reviews the battery life on the 4xl is great. It is certianly on par with all the other pixel xl models I have had. And the only one i did not have was the 3xl. Now the 3axl is a different story that phone has legendary battery life because of its upper mid range processer. But My advice is if you need ip rated phone go for the 4xl. The smaller 4 is where the batttery really becomes an issue from what I have read and I read alot as you can see I am a big google fan had every phone starting with the n6p. oh and back in the day I had a galaxy nexus because I was a samsung fan before that.

That's is my issue, I want the IP rating but I also want the power efficient processor and the dual SIM. I guess I'll decide when it's fully revealed. Glad to see a Google fan, I still own and use every Nexus device from the Galaxy Nexus onward. The Nexus 6p is my all time favorite phone. I would still use it as a main phone if it's processor can be upgraded and get the battery replaced. Cheers buddy.

I've had all the Pixels, liked them all. I traded my P4XL in on an S20+. As before, I'm done with the Galaxy & ready to go back to my Pixel. The 4a looks good to me. A couple compromises but every phone has that. The price though. I've spent 2 and 3 times that for phones. This has to be the most popular Pixel ever. The battery life on my 4xl is still really good and you can turn off the motion sence and the 90hz screen if it really is an issue. And I only charge my phone to 80 only 100 if I am going to be away from a chargers for more than a day and how often does that happen. Also o don't know what carrier you have but I'm on fi and I use esim. I could be wrong but I think o could pop a physical sim in and have dual SIM 1 physical and one esim. And my Nexus 6p was my favorite phone for a long time I did not have any issues with it until the end right before I got my pixel XL. The battery started getting crappy. My poor wife always gets my hand me down phones and she was stuck with it for a while till I got my.pixel 2xl. I even put a new battery in it and it worked ok for.a while and died within 7 months. That phone hadaa great start in life and a hard fall from Grace.

The only thing about Samsung is their hardware is untouchable when it comes to quality. For example the wifi radio it 5 times better than in other phones of the same price. But that software man. I just cant do it. It is a shame the phone has 8 gigs of ram and 7 of it is taken up by system/bloatware. ( and yes 7 gigs is an exaggeration but you get the point) when my friend got the s10 i thought about it because they say the new ui is not like touchwiz but i ran some tests on his brand new s10 and compared them to my pixel 2xl and yeah the s10 had some great features that at the time you could not get with any pixel but I gotta say my 2xl was almost as snappy as his s10 and it all came down to memory management and system resources being used by the s10. Both stock phones no root or anything. Yeah the s10 was a bit faster but the 2xl held up with its 4 gigs of ram and 835 snapdragon against 8gigs of ram and snapdragon 855 in the s10. Its all about knowing the os and how to use it. I can do with Samsung's crappy software compared to Google's stock Android, but the camera is awful man. Samsung's hardware quality is on par with iPhones but the camera still sucks even with their ultra phone.
Now that apple has got their **** together and I can say pictures are marginally better on iPhones now plus the iphone's video capabilities are untouchable.
Samsung has got to step up their camera game with software and drop the hardware approach on the matter.

I agree with the fact that Samsung needs to try a little harder. Maybe less one ui bull crap and a little more camera optimizations

I have a dilemma though. The Pixel 4A is expected to release at the €400 price in a few weeks. But I can also get the Poco F2 Pro for €450. The issue I have is that looking at the specs and videos available, the F2 PRO has a lot better specs on paper. Larger battery life, HDR10+, big screen Snapdragon 865 so its 5G enabled (in case I ever need it).

So I know many of you have been running Pixel phones and are looking at the Pixel 4A.

My 2 cents after using all the Nexus and pixel phones up to the 2xl. Haven't upgraded since cause the 3XL and 4XL have sub par battery performance, more on the 3XL than the 4XL though.
The only reason I can not bare to use another phone is the camera. I was spoiled with the photo quality of the Nexus 6p which is still better than a lot of 2020 flagship phones camera performance. I upgraded to the OnePlus 6 from the Nexus 6p which was an amazing phone at the time, but after two months I switch to the pixel 2xl solely because of the photo quality from the cameras. Google camera ports are never reliable, you should not buy a phone thinking you will use it full time cause u won't be able to.
Pixel phones lack support except in the US. Always plagued with hardware issues and it's a lottery if you get a device without the issues. Since I don't live in the US it's a pain in the ass to even get a case or a screen protector and I have to pay for international shipping. I couldn't even file the Nexus 6p class action lawsuit claim cause I don't live in the US. God forbid if I break the screen or anything happens, I'm completely on my own. Honestly I'm kind of fed up with Google and their crap. I'm one of their most loyal customers but they do not care about their customer base while they just want to grow pixel sales, which is contradictive.
Also there is the news of Marc Levoy leaving Google after he basically put them on the map, cause imo if the pixel phones had the same camera as other phones it wouldn't have sold more than a few hundred phones ever year. This news comes with a lot of concern, imo the camera quality didn't improve much in the last 4 years (Nexus 6p). Phones from the Nexus 6p are very comparable to photos from the pixel 3XL. Very slight improvements every year, while apple just closed the gap this year with the iPhone 11.
With the discounts of the 4XL only real difference is
1- get a mid range phone with good battery life and possibly no hardware issues cause they are not trying to reinvent the wheel with this one, like they do with the pixel line.
2- get the flagship pixel 4XL but gamble on screen quality and battery life. I have seen people on reddit saying that their pixel 4XL has worse screens than their pixel 2XL. The screen on the pixel 2xl is the worst thing on it! And was considered a con when it came out.
After realizing that both choices are bad, I'm starting to seriously consider jumping ship to apple with the upcoming iPhone 12pro. With apply I would certainly get what I pay for in terms of quality, still with a list of disadvantage. But I would get official support world wide, buying accessories won't be such a pain in my ass and most importantly camera quality is now debated to be on the same level as pixels if not better.
This got way longer than intended.
TL;DR: The only reason to get a pixel is to have one of the best cameras on a phone. Other than that it's all the same with android, more or less. Specially of you root get into custom roms.

Oneplus Nord vs Pixel 4a

It's there anyone who actually had/has both devices and can tell me something about the differences in real life?
I've read many reviews and comparisons but they are not all the same in terms of battery life and performance.

I had a Nord for about 2 months before I sold it and went for the Pixel 4a instead... I lost a lot of money as the re-sale value on OnePlus phones is terrible.
The screen was nicer on the Nord, especially with the 90hz option enabled. Battery life was about the same as what I'm getting now, even though it had a much larger battery. I also felt it was too big, whereas the Pixel is great for one handed use. Camera is much better as well.
I haven't had a Google phone since the Nexus 4, so it's good to be back. With the recent changes to Oxygen OS I can't see myself going back.

I nearly got a nord as they look ok and oneplus used to have a good reputation but in recent years there's been a lot of nonsense like cheating in benchmarks; the requirement to send your phone to poland to get HD netflix re-enabled after an update; weird scrolling issues, plus the camera in the nord sucks compared to the 4a. And having had a moto and an honor play, both with some weird version of android which never gets updated, i'm done with anything other than the nexus...sorry, pixel range, or android one devices.

Definitely - they have moved away from their core enthusiast audience to branch out into the mainstream. From a business point of view it was always going to happen once they had a foothold in the market. I remember being blown away when I first got the OnePlus One! I had it for 4 years before upgrading to the OP5T.
The Pixel line might be expensive compared to other equivalent phones, but the software support and camera experience is worth it.

Informative thread. My 4A should arrive tomorrow. Exciting! I have high hopes for this device. Been searching for a good 5.5 to 6 inch device for what seems like forever. Who would have thought it would be so difficult to find in 2020?
Tried to get the pixel 5 but it is sold out everywhere. Madness! So I have decided to go for the 4A. Probably be the better choice for me anyway. Smaller form factor.
My main concern is the ram management really. I hope it is ok and apps do not get killed off aggressively. Will use it for a week and see how it performs. Any problems and I will send it back!

Fun thing is, in there mean time i bought a pixel 4a.
I wanted to test one out as my partner needed a new phone anyway.
I love it! Great size, fast and fluid enough.. i don't even notice the performance differences compared to the Nord. The Nord is noticeably smoother but the pixel 4a is still really smooth, smooth enough for me.
Great battery life and a freakin great camera!
So much better compared to OnePlus.
I really love being back on stock Android, this also reminds me of the Nexus days.
By the end of the week my 4a will go to my partner as i will receive my pixel 5.

Yeah it's the perfect size for usability I think, I really want to try out the astrophotography mode so i'll be a cheap tripod and test it out on a clear night.
I did look at the Pixel 5, but I really couldn't justify spending almost double the price here in the UK for minimal upgrades... I don't think the 4a 5G was worth the extra £150 either. Enjoy the 5!

I have not noticed any issues with apps getting killed - to be honest I only really use about 5 apps so maybe if you were using a lot more then it would be noticeable.

Yep 5.8 is the sweet spot I think too. I still have my old s8 in a draw somewhere. Has not been used for over a year due to the poor performance (I blame the exynos soc). But the form factor and size was very good. I expect the 4A to be even better as it is even smaller but same screen size.
Funnily enough, I recently bought and tried the Huawei mate 20X. A monster. 7.2 inch screen. Sent it back after a week. Too much to handle. It pretty much reemphasized the fact that I prefer a much smaller device. Can't wait for tomorrow!

I totally agree on the price difference between 4a and 5 but it's just that i can't help myself. ?
The differences aren't big but they do make the 5 perfect and i really love a good wide angle camera.
Perfect size, nice weight (4a 5g is substantially heavier), perfect processor and RAM, 90hz display, water resistant etc.. and also a better finish with much more grip, the 4a is really slippery and this time i don't want to use a case because it destroys the feel.

The pixel arrived. Haven't taken my fingers off it since! It is such a nice design and fit. love the size. Setting up everything which takes forever as always. So far so good!

I envy all of you. Here in Germany it is really hard to get one. Hopefully I will get it in two weeks.
I have a Xiaomi MI9T Pro. The device is great. But its just too big and heavy. I will sell it for 300€. Bought it last year for 350€ so i can live with the -50€.

OnePlus Nord was never sold in Canada, but OnePlus says it will support all devices for 3 years and that maybe but they are not quick about it. I like the clean Google experience, may never buy a OnePlus device again they are deviating from a clean Google like experience and becoming more expensive.

Well I moved from OnePlus 7T to Pixel 4A because I was tired of Oxygen OS and it's quirks.

I have decided to return it...lol. it is a great device and I do like it as I've said in previous posts. Size is ace. But this is the second device along with the mate 20x as well, that I will be returning after trying.
Both devices have served to show me how good and how much I still prefer my other phone. Honor V20! Been using v20 for almost 2 years now and I keep coming back to it. Just such a great device and updated to android 10 too. So will go back to that for now. Until I can truly find a replacement. If I didn't have the v20 I would for sure keep the 4A or even maybe try the pixel 5. Enjoy the 4a guys. Great device.
UPDATE... I've decided to keep it after all. Will use it in tandem with the v20. Switch back and forth. I love the size too much to let it go.

I came from a OnePlus 7 Pro which i sadly broke front and and back glass. Was a really nice device altough a bit to big and heahy.
Only things i miss on the 4a are the ultrawide lense, alert slider and the plethora of custom roms. I love the size and feel of it.

I am coming from an OnePlus 7T, because oi hated Oxygen OS. I am not missing anything except the screen size. I would have bought the 4A5ag of it was sold in India.
The performance and battery life is excellent for me with my 180 apps + work profile.
730G/6GB/128GB is the perfect performance recipie if you are not into gaming.
There have been zero multitasking issues or missed notifications.
Go for Pixel 4A.

Compared to the Pixel 4/xl this just feels like a downgrade, even to the Pixel 3xl it's no real upgrade. Most people who think budget will not turn to this phone and the highend-spenders will not be pleased by this. I don't see googles angle hear, however they haven't shown any good angle recently anyway. And the heck did they remove the neural core? Plus getting a weaker soc.. just madnes.

Apparently neural core made face unlock work quicker so no loss there.
About the only thing I would prefer is higher ppi but I sure don't want to spend $1000 to get it.
My next phone will be 5G so pixel 4/xl aren't an option.
If it's not enough bang for the buck then just wait for black Friday and/or opt for the 4a 5G.
Google phones have never been the best phone for everyone.

Most likely the machine learning Ai stuff is included in the snapdragon 765 so no more dedicated chip is necessary. I would not worry too much

Sure, we technically don't know what the battery life will be but just knowing a little bit about phone hardware and some common sense indicates that the battery life should be pretty good.
The biggest battery drain on any phone is the screen mainly due to the screen resolution. So take the Pixel 4 XL for example. The battery life wasn't too bad but not great either. Now increase the size of the battery 10%, decrease the number of pixels by 42%(that alone is huge), decrease the overall screen area by 11%, add in a slightly more power efficient processor, remove Soli and remove face unlock and you basically have the Pixel 5. The only thing really working against the Pixel 5 in terms of battery life is the 5G which I'm going to turn off anyways. I have no concerns about the battery life of the Pixel 5.

The more interesting comparison is to the 4a. A significant price difference but both are a similar size and real world performance would be similar too.
This just leaves wireless charging, IP and maybe 90hz as the tangible differences you would notice day to day. Maybe it will feel more premium in hand too but that is hard to know right now.
I got the 4a with the intention of giving it to one of my parents with the 5 landed, I am now hesitating though as the 4a is terrific and I am not sure the 5 is £250 better.

I have only had my pixel 5 for a week and i am super impressed with the battery life. I have been getting 3 days out of it . At the moment it has 25 % left and it's used 8 hours and 26 minutes of screen use , that's using google to simply surf the net and as I am a distribution driver i use Google Maps daily, I also make multiple calls daily and use Bluetooth all day for my vans multi media unit and my zenwatch 3 all day I am 61 years old so I have had tons of phones and I have to say i think this phone stacks up with the best including the Asus rog 3

Con: Price for what is being offered. The speakers are just OK. The gap issue from production quality. Luckily I was able to get my P5 for net cost of about 461 including tax after stacking a bunch of promos, etc. Also no gap issue on mine.
I'm not an iPhone fanatic so I have nothing to say about the iPhone 12. The only phone that I currently have and would recommend is the S20FE, but not at MSRP AND if it doesn't have these touch screen issues that people are talking about. Only thing with Samsung phones is that you have to spend additional time to customize to your liking and reducing bloat. I was also pleasantly surprised with the camera qualify after making settings adjustments to reduce saturation and softening in photos.

After using mine for about a week, I am kind of regretting trading in my 4XL for one reason....the ear speaker quality. It is literally the worst sounding earpiece and is extremely quiet relative to my 4XL. I was driving on the highway yesterday and could barely hear my client on the other end. Had to plug in my wired headset. Unacceptable. I will probably send in for a new unit to see if its any better, but everyone seems to have the same comment as I.
I can settle with almost every concession Google took, and I do think the fingerprint is a big welcome back feature. I hate face unlock especially with having to wear masks. Never made sense to me. The hole punch doesnt both me.

As far as Active edge is concerned. I guess, apparently the feature isn't 'official' on the Pixel 5.

I'm not an iPhone fanatic so I have nothing to say about the iPhone 12. The only phone that I currently have and would recommend is the S20FE, but not at MSRP AND if it doesn't have these touch screen issues that people are talking about. Only thing with Samsung phones is that you have to spend additional time to customize to your liking and reducing bloat. I was also pleasantly surprised with the camera qualify after making settings adjustments to reduce saturation and softening in photos.

I've sold my FE for the Pixel. The screen issues are annoying albeit the last update seems to have sorted it, but I just cannot live with the Samsung nonsense like cannot delete Samsung photos app and playing a dance to get to Google Photos
It's a great phone the FE but not when you are Googled up for home and work and can't be bothered working around 2 of everything

The Pixel 5 is great. It just works out of the box. I'm enjoying mine and it has been a couple of weeks. You can debloat Samsung, but obviously that's additional steps. It's not hard, but quite frankly I just don't want to invest time with custom ROMs, adb commands, etc. Those days are long gone lol.

A bit true..but this would never happen. Htc had 1 model with 2 versions ...one with htc software and one with google only ...
