Hi I am from the UK, but this is probably answerable by anyone who understands the topic..
Basically, I am looking at upgrading, however 4G is expected to be in the UK in 2013. However, Orange/T-Mobile (Everything Everywhere), have said they are looking at updating their network in Q3 of 2012, supplying the UK with HSPA+ - which is a fair bit faster than the current standard (HS(D?)PA). However, I was wondering if current devices released in the UK (cough, the HTC One X. or possibly the Galaxy S3) will simply require a software update for HSPA+ to work? But if the devices won't even be able to use HSPA+, I don't want to upgrade yet.

It will depend of the hardware ability of the network ship , if manufacturer will just allow further abilities by a simple software upgrade , devs will know the trick and make it available by custom roms or apps.
My advice : Wait and see ! New telecommunication standards are always a long time ahead devices able to handle it . Keep your device until the official release of new offers , upgrade plans...It's better than buying now an expensive one.

Hey guys I'm planning on going to Japan sometime soon and have decided to start planning. Buying a phone in Japan is much more expensive compared to those in the USA, especially considering the Nexus line.
I'm wondering what phones would work on the cellphone providers in Japan: SoftBank, NTT Docomo? Could I bring a GSM Nexus 4 or Galaxy Nexus?
As long as the phone contains the necessary radio antennae to communicate with the network's in Japan, you can use it. I know there are international versions of phone that contain several different antennaes to allow such commuunication, but I don't know them off the top of my head.

I'm looking at replacing my S4 with an S7. My carrier in the US is AT&T and that won't be changing. I've been looking at different unlocked versions and can't find a solid representation of what the real world differences are. I know they have different processors. Some say a band is missing, but does that matter. I don't use android or samsung pay, but i know there is a difference here too. I found one comment about some kind of samsung 'coverage' plan, but what is that?
Best Buy has US unlocked phones for about $700. B&H Photo has an International phone for about $640. Its a lot of money either way. Is one phone really better or different than that other?
I am planning a trip through Canada and maybe to Europe. I assume either would take a SIM from those areas and I could avoid getting raped by international fees.
Here is a summary of question I can think of:
Does the US unlocked phone from BestBuy have a warranty or insurance or anything like that?
Can the US phone be rooted. I only do this to remove apps I don't use.
Is the hardware one vs the other really better or just different?
Does a dual SIM do anything useful?
Does a band being missing make a real world difference?
Is there a good comparison somewhere to that can decide on a phone to purchase?
It comes with a limited warranty as stated on their site:

What I don't know is how useful/limited that warranty is. I'd like the HTC 10 but the unlocked S7 is my runner up, and the warranty issue is one of the major factors in my hesitation.
I do believe it can be rooted.
As far as I know, through research, the only major difference between the two is battery life.
Hello, I'll just go straight to the answers.
1. I'm going to assume that if you go through a carrier (att, t-mobile etc etc.) they will offer an insurance plan. You will have to go to third party insurance for the international version
2. As far I know, the US version does not have a root option yet. Because of the locked bootloader.
3. Hardware will depend on which version you choose. Both are very good.
4. Dual sim is as the name implies, you'll be able to use 2 separate sim cards with their respective #s. that's the only benefit really.
5. Missing radio bands is something you may have to do some research on depending your location.
6. I'm sure YouTube or some online site will have some reviews/comparison of both.
I just looked at the best buy website again and something is different. The S7 listed for $690 is definitely the international version and not the US version. When I looked last month I was positive that the phone was listed as a US phone ... huh
A little late
a little late to the thread but just wanted to share what I learned while researching the matter.
There is an US unlocked version of the S7 (g930u) and available through a few places (Best Buy, B&H, Ebay). It goes for $679.99 retail and I have not been able to find one that goes for less. Probably because it just came out end of June. The biggest benefit of it is that it has a bunch of bands and CDMA-compatible. Thus, you can get full connection with AT&T and TMobile. Downside is no wifi calling or VOLTE (as those seem to be locked by the carriers to their own phones).
The international versions (930f/930fd) are both available on Ebay/Swappa for about $500. Upside are that they have the Exnyos chip and no bloatware. You can also root and flash them with new ROM. Another thing is that you get updates earlier. I got Marshmallow on my s6 a month or so before AT&T released its update. Downsides are no Samsung Pay or WiFi Calling/VOLTE and the biggie...missing bands. I had a g920i and it was missing support for bands 29 and 30 on AT&T...this led to poor LTE and indoor reception at times. I would have to turn on/off the mobile data switch sometimes to get good connection.
Finally, we have carrier based versions, which loads you down with bloatware and has the Snapdragon chip. But, it does support all features of your carrier. Slower updates also an issue and lack of support of all bands internationally are additional drawbacks. Cost is also about $500.
Personally, I am going with an unlocked 930a. Bloatware sucks but I can delete or disable almost all of them. Snapdragon seems pretty powerful to me. Samsung Pay, Wifi Calling, and Band support are just too important for me. Note, make sure you ask the seller on Ebay/Swappa about whether the phone is unlocked.

Since you're on AT&T you have more options.
There are two different processors in the two different models, Snapdragon 820 in the US CDMA capable and an Eyxnos in the International GSM ONLY phone.
After doing my research, I personally recommend the Eyxnos, which I couldn't get :/
If for nothing else, better battery life, by far. Do some research into the comparison between the two.
However! When buying from Best Buy be careful!
Last I checked, on their website, the black/onyx S7 was an unlocked US Snapdragon 820 phone.... while strangely enough the other two, gold and silver? were both unlocked US (actually international) Eyxnos phones.
Also, last I checked Samsung themselves only sell the CDMA snapdragon processor model to the US.
Unless Best Buy made a mistake listing the Eyxnos processor, it is the only way to get that model without buying an "internationally sourced" phone on ebay.
Just a few notes:
1) The G930u is fully compatible with all the US Carriers
2) VoLTE works on both T-Mobile and Verizon
3) Wi-Fi Calling works on T-Mobile and potentially Verizon (but I am not positive about Verizon).
The big downside to the G930u is that for whatever reason it is not receiving updates from Samsung when its branded siblings are.

So, I have an update from Samsung Canada - Chat online (the lpcdn.lpsnmedia.net website for the chat session - since it appears the original chat session never gets connected to an "actual" agent), if you need the direct chat link URL, let me know.
1. 512GB variant is only available in selective markets - according to the internal documents - 512GB is stated as *TBD* - but the chat agent thinks it will likely be the South Korea Variant, and HK Variant only. But also it could be released much later than the original launch date.
3. Thom Browne Edition WILL NOT come in 512 GB, it is only 256 GB.
Also, since you CAN NOT pre-order the Thom Browne Edition on Samsung's Canada's Website - it is again, *TBD* - out of the limited quantities available - Samsung Inventory Management Department (I was quoted to SIMD by the agent) - every region will have a certain quantity for order, and once done, there is no way to order it, unless third party web sites (wondamobile, pda plaza, swiftronics, etc.) carries then.
Not sure if I should take these answers with "grains of salt" or if this agent was actually knowledgeable. The agent's name was Paula.
So, we'll see.

Guess they figured those of us in North America and Europe werent good enough for the 512gb version.
Samsung is doing quite a bit to annoy customers this year. I am one of them, long time samsung customer and they are doing a fabulous job of alienating its loyal customer base so far in 2020 especially lately

Isn't this due to different habits in each market? EU/US are very cloud heavy, with a lot of streaming for video & music...so most of the storage space will be for apps and photos.
For most users, i'd wager over 90% but don't have stats to back that up, 256gb is more than enough - overkill in fact.
In Korea/China/HK things are different and local storage is really important, so you see a lot of manufacturers offering expandable or larger storage in those markets.

who knows why, either way it's very frustrating similar to how having the note 20 ultra 512gb version available only in black.

I'd have to respectfully disagree with this, as I've lived in China for 20 years, literally about half my life. Basically, all China runs on the cloud. You'll find very very few, except for maybe the old generations (50+) not streaming everything from music to games to movies and tv from online streaming services. The only local storage used is to install games and apps, and to hold tens of thousands of pictures they love taking of every little thing. You won't find them storing videos or music or anything on their phones though. So this particular line of reasoning, at least for China, I feel doesn't hold water. But that's JMHO.
Regardless of who lives where and such, it should come with at least what the previous version did and/or allow expandable storage. We all keep getting less yet the price becomes higher. Charger is next to go. They tried as best they could to get it as close to the original price as possible, but there are sacrifices because of it obviously.
Word of caution. We're back to the old days where different variants have different cellular bands. My Tab S7+ 5G from Spain supports a handful of EU 5G bands but the only U.S. band it supports is AT&T's 850MHz. It's SD 865+ just like the Z Fold 2 so I'd imagine all Samsung's 5G phones are going to have support for bands by region. If you're happy with LTE then it doesn't matter. If you like to flip your phones I think a non-5G capable version of a $2,000 phone would be a hard sell here in the U.S. so that's something to consider too.

Samsung has made multi-models for as long as I can remember. Unless you specifically purchase the US/Canada model, there was always at least 2+ bands missing on LTE from the other variants. Those devices would work in most areas, but not in all of the outskirts.
Even the S20 USA and Canada versions differ, both LTE and 5G bands are different. This on a very recent device.

Which LTE bands do you consider missing? The point I was making is that multi-band LTE support has greatly evolved whereas 5G is going to be hit or miss for a while. Someone with a current generation device can pretty much count on accessing LTE worldwide no matter what the phone's country of origin. For 5G? Not so much and not for a long time.

Dont think your going to get any answers for the next little while. It is still in pre-order state and not readily available. However, I have not seen or heard of any that will have dual SIM and definitely no SD card slot for storage expansion.

I could live without the SD card slot if it came with 512gb. But that's the minimum for me. 256gb won't cut it for me so I'm hoping this phone would work out for me in the US. But I don't want to give up 5g or all the bands I need for LTE on tmobile in the US.

Same, I still cant believe samsung was stupid enough to give this top-tier phone only 256gb of storage in most parts of the world. They seem to favour the asian countries since they got 512gb.Note 20 ultra got 512gb in black only here i canada and most other places yet again some (not all) asian countries got other colours in 512gb.
This is a trend starting here and not a good look for samsung or any company showing bias like this.
I've imported tons of phones, but I will not do that with this one due to its more fragile nature and knowing samsung canada will not touch a non Canadian device for warranty.

So, I'm planning on buying Galaxy XCover 6Pro but I'm getting confused if there are different version of it out on the market? I've noticed that shops in my country (Poland) mark phones they are selling using these three different product numbers:
sm-g736bzkdeeb,
sm-g736bzkdeee,
sm-g736bzkd
with the first one (EEB) being called "Enterprise Edition" appearing in most of stores while the offical samsung.com store lists XCover 6Pro with "EEE" product number. Neverthless google shows up a samsung page for the "EEB" model too.

So i checked the specs, in stores and on these samsung pages and they all appear to be the same XCover 6 Pro, 6GB 5G phones with Dual Sim in black colour.

The difference between the two devices you have named, is that one is made for the German market (EEB) and one is made for the eastern European and Swiss/Austrian markets (EEE).
There may be some issues with things such as samsung pay if you are using a device outside of its region but overall the device should work fine either way.
With the previous model (G715FN), I was able to flash to my local firmware without issue and all bands worked flawlessly as well as all localised features such as samsung pay. Unfortunately once this is done, you will not receive OTA updates any longer as it recognises your device has been modified. This may be because I tripped knox doing all this.
The only other thing to look out for is that you aren't buying a device that has been locked to a given carrier, or requires a sim from that carrier for activation.
Again, there's usually ways around this but you don't need to complicate your life like that.
If you are able to buy locally, surely they can give you some assurances that the device will work with your local providers?

Samsung generally include all international MBN files in their modem config files so it's not such a huge deal these days as long as you can successfully register the device for use.
