Portrait - Google Pixel 4a Questions & Answers

Has anyone figured out how to add portrait to a previous photo? This was advertised with the 4a, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Well in order to do so, that the picture obviously needs to be taken in portrait mode. After that you can adjust the background blur in google photos. I'm assuming that's what you meant

AHHH, I see now what they are talking about, I don't think it was clear that the original needed to be in portrait mode. Thanks

No. You can do it. Just open it in Google photos, go to edit and crank the blur up all you want. Just tried and it works.

Tru AOSP camera on Sense Roms!!

This is the true aosp camera that will work on evo sense roms alongside your htc camera
Any more info? or screenshots etc?
install this like an app?
thanks
Thanks snandlal!
Installed it like a regular app.
Works pretty well in both camera and video modes.
Wish it had more options though.
Thanks a lot.
This is a step in the right direction. Would be nice if someone could take this and add all the changes that cyan had added to the AOSP camera in his rom.

Sorry I don't have a screenshot, but if you have used CM6, in the early stages before Cyanogen added all the new features to the camera, it is the same camera. Shows up as 3mp, one user said that even though it says 3mp, it is actually 8mp. I can't confirm this, as I no longer have this camera app on my phone. Can anyone else confirm the MP on this camera? Easy way to do this, is to upload a pic to your computer and open it in any photo app. You can also find the pic on your phone and long press the pic and select "Details". What is the resolution of pics taken with this app?

That's what I thought. I remembered the original camera from CM6 was only 3 and this looks like the exact same setup. I deleted when I saw the lack of options. I wish someone could mix in the changes that Cyanogen did to the cam app in CM6. That has a LOT of options.... lol

G2X Camera Issues

The camera on the stock ROM seemed fine. Now, I'm running CM7 and while it seemed fine before, now I'm seeing dark images.
I took pictures indoor at a Christmas party without flash and noticed there seemed to be a "trip point". Camera images were fine, but when the light level dropped just a very small tiny bit, the camera image instead dramatically dropped from from well-lit to completely dark!
There seems to be a light level where below that, just a very small drop in light level, dropped the light level of the camera image a very large amount.
I was using the CM7 camera and LG Camera and they both behaved the same way.
Anyone has a solution for this? Is the camera different for different kernels like CM7, Trinity, or Faux? Or is dependent upon the version of Android loaded (CM7, Weapon, etc)?
Its same, you need to setup exposure.

No, re-read what I wrote. Exposure does not drop that dramatically.
It's probably the automatic ISO setting in the ROM.
Edit: I just looked at the EXIF of the photos I took. The photos that came out fine were at ISO 500. But the underexposed photos with slightly less ambient light had the ISO jump to high-speed ISO of 1250.
What handles the ISO - the ROM, camera app, or OS?

The camera app, there are ISO settings in the picture settings. In CM7 it is set to Auto by default.

You seem to contradict yourself. Is the ISO managed by the Camera app, or the ROM? How do you know?

The camera app is part of CM7.
Inside of it, there is a settings button at the bottom right. Scroll down the list. You should find the ISO settings there.

You are still not making any sense. Or maybe you are someone else that just makes **** up?
Look, from any camera app, there is an adjustment to SELECT the ISO settings. Big duh.
My question is, is the actual management of the ISO, such as the behavior of automatic ISO, it is MANAGED by the camera app, or Android, or the kernel?
You do not seem to understand the question, do you????
(BTW, I am on CM7 and all my camera apps have an ISO adjustment)

I just got help. The camera drivers are in the kernel.
You seem o be using a ****ty camera app if it has no ISO setting. Or maybe it has an ISO setting and you are incapable of finding it. Try any of the many free camera apps like Camera 360 or LG Camera.

LG opted to have less bloat so that's why. I think the camera is fine how it is, although options are always good.

Try this ... A Better Camera
I also recommend A Better Camera. It's what I use and I can confirm that even the free version allows you to control the ISO and White Balance settings (along with lots of other things too). I haven't seen anything about the stabilization settings, so I think you are out of luck there.
PS - you can change the stock action of holding down the volume down key when the screen is off and it can start A Better Camera instead of the stock camera if you want. That's what I do. I think I'm doing this with the G3 TweaksBox xposed module.
Image stabilization.... it's hardware, you can never turn it off

Try the stock Google Camera. I did several shots using it and the stock and favored the Google shots over the stock in 2 of the 4 comparisons. It doesn't have a lot of settings but ISO is one of them.

Google Camera APK with U12+?

Have any of you tried using the Google Camera APK with your U12+ yet? Since the Pixel 2 has only one lens, I wasn't sure if it would be able to function correctly. Haven't tried yet!

The big difference that I can see is on the portrait mode on the front camera. While HTC's camera app results in mediocre and inaccurate pics, Google Cam (even the aforementioned one, with a terrible preview refresh rate) produces excellent, crisp selfies with great bokeh. Unfortunately, portrait mode on the rear cams does not work on this Gcam version, so I cannot compare.
Question about this. Since this is just software, 3rd party at that, if in any way it corrupts whatever in the stock cam app, a factory reset should resolve any problems, right?

First of all, it's a separate app. Why do you think it will corrupt a different application (stock camera)? It's like you saying Facebook will corrupt Viber.
So to answer your question, NO.
Has anyone found a working version where portrait mode (front and rear) aren't pretty much unusable? (major lag)

This. If you take a look back on this thread you will see that I am looking for the same, because GCam for portrait shots is leagues ahead from HTC's camera app. I have tried most of the versions, and most of the ones made for dual- lens phones (S9+, G7, OP6) crash on startup, while some older ones work but the lag on portrait modes makes them useless. I also failed to find a general forum discussing GCam here on XDA (which makes sense, as all versions are phone-specific). I think the only way to find a working version is either by luck or when/if a developer works on a version specific to U12+

wonder if any of the night sight versions work hahaha. Seen some Nokias being able to use it outside of the pixels....
Tried this one briefly:

Worked, but after each shot, was receiving error of a hexagon failing......so reverted to the older 1b in case of unreliability - anyone else tried? This version did have night sight - didnt get a chance to try.

Night Mode killer? OnePlus 6 Promode camera presets

Lowlight vs preset. (Updated)
*•*photo 1. standard auto hdr.
*•*photo 2. iso :2000 shutter at 0.4 with manual wb at 4200+/-
*•*photo 3. iso : 400 shutter at 5 and wb at 4060k.
*•*photo 4. iso : 1600 shutter at 8 and wb at 4060k (extreme low light conditions)
Tripod used : Tripod was used for shot 3 and 4, I used a $5 one with a $1 phone mount. Something an everyday consumer would be able to get.
*Update*
(salt attack prevention)
added shot for gcam too.
Gcambuild: GoogleCamera_6.1.013.216795316-debug2.apk
Onepluscam: 2.10.5
OOS : 9.0.1
Rooted.
*Update 2*
Added* Extreme low light conditions test shots.
Comments:
obviously leaving the shutter open draws in more light but it also captures more yellow. so i just manually tune that and save it as a preset. because night photos usually need to be cooled. I tried to use as low iso as possible in the settings to try reduce any unnecessary noise caused by high iso.
photo 2's settings are nice if you dont have tripod. as you can see the noise is significantly decreased and has way better sharpness. but still kept relatively the same exposure.
then for settings of the 3rd photo are my favorite. you need a tripod. but i mean it cames out amazing. even beats low light mode.
The 4th photo and settings are for extreme low light conditions and you'll need a tripod too.
