Adaptive brightness causing frequent changes - Google Pixel 4a Questions & Answers

My Pixel 4a screen brightness keeps going up and down frequently (like every 10 seconds). Turning off adaptive brightness has temporarily resolved this.
This seems similar to an issue I read about in some of the initial reviews of the phone.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Any idea of what is going on and how to fix?

Mine did that the first couple hours. It kept keeping the brightness lower then I like, so after changing it a few times it's rock solid now, zero issues.

Clock falling behind overnight and battery drain

Hey everyone
I have had the one x for 2 days now and have been having a few issues.
I tried searching but couldnt find anything related to my issue.
The last few nights I have left my phone off the charger to see standby battery life. Each night I am losing over 20% in 6/7 hours of sleep time. I have downloaded betterbatterystats now so I should have a good understanding of whats causing it soon. But I am also having an issue where my clock falls behind in time overnight. It falls behind about 10/15 minutes by the time I wake up. Also effects my alarm. As I leave my house it eventually updates and sets the clock back to the correct time.
Anyone have any similar issues? Possibly related issues you think?
Thanks

Are you using the network time (Settings -> Date & Time -> Automatic date & time)? I noticed that it is was not checked by default when I was first setting mine up.
Also, mind sharing what was causing your drain?

I actually had use network time already enabled. I took it off and set time manually. Ill find out tomorrow morning if it does it again.
As far as battery goes:
Im somewhat new to the android scene so not 100% sure at this point.
I believe it was google + auto update pictures on wifi/mobile. I changed to while on charger and manual.
There also seems to be a weird process called "TPD" in betterbatterystats maxed out w/ a red bar , not sure what it means tho.
I will try and get a screenshot up in a sec.
im guessing its total power draw? not sure what it means tho
There seems to be some reported issues with network time sync... dunno if AT&T towers are off or it's attributed to the HOX losing cell signal (mine does this frequently). It causes all sorts of issues when trying to use time-based two-factor auth like Google Authenticator or RSA tokens.
I'm going to try and manually set it and see if that helps retain proper time keeping.

I checked cell standby and it did say 0% signal loss , but thats what I thought was causing it.
So even with clock set manually it still fell behind 6 min overnight. I'm lost

Did you ever find out what tpd was? It seems to be a battery life killer on my One X also...
It happened once on my One X. It's been a bug in Sense since the Windows Mobile days. Dunno when HTC will get around to fixing it.
I am having daily problems with this as well. ClockSync app is only good for readjusting as it seems to synchronize overnight and that is when as you all have mentioned, is when the clock falls short. for me i sleep at midnight and wake up at 8:30 and the clock on my hox is slower by 10-15 minutes. this is on a DAILY. this is super super aggrevating and I don't know what to do. Is it possible to get a new HOX?

It's a bug in Sense so you should either exchange for a Galaxy S III or wait for a stable CM9 or CM10 ROM.
I haven't had this issue for a long time. Ever since I started using clean rom. Worth a shot to try as well.

I had similar clock issues when I got my HOX. Never totally figured it out, but I am on manual time and have ClockSync set to sync every hour. No problems since then.
ClockSync can be set to automatically fix your clock if you have root.
realized the only thign that helped me was upgrading firmware. i was on 1.73, now installed 1.85 RUU and everything is cleannnn and good to go!

What is your screen brightness set at?

So im (not) patiently waiting for my Galaxy s 3 to come here Tuesday and I was just wondering what does everyone have their brightness set to? I know that i personally am going to be hesistant to set my screen brightness to 100% seeing how my galaxy nexus suffered a burn in where you could see the keyboard imprinted on the screen. At the same time I want to have an amazing picture and I know i will get annoyed of the auto brightness =/ Anyways I know this is a weird question so I just wanted to know what everyone else was doing with their phone
I have mine at 25-30% by itself. Its kinda dark but I don't mind. Its just enough

I run mine at about 45%.

0%.
Huge improvement over an iPhone 3G's 0% brightness.
mine is at about 30% for indoor use. The screen is darker than SG1. I could use the SG1 at 0% indoor and anything over 50% used to be painful on eyes. Not in SG3. Outdoors i have to set 80% for good visibility in SG3. I hope Samsung will give us the update for brightness control on the status bar like they did just now for the international version.

If I'm not mistaken phones tend to come with a year manufacturer warranty, personally if that's the case and you hit burn in then it should get replaced easily.
My fassy got burn in 6 months and got it swapped without issue, so I'd have no problem cranking it up if I were not concerned about battery, which I leave up now the way it is as I like seeing my screen well

50%, I got over 2 hours of screen-on time and 15 total hours of battery.
Still have it on auto and I'm on the second week of ownership of this phone.
auto brightness all the time and it is sometimes almost too dark.
Another thing better implemented by HTC
I find that the "Auto Brightness" feature doesn't really work. Meaning it never adjusts the brightness at all. So I manually keep mine set to about 30% all the time. I don't keep a close eye on my battery but I don't have to recharge at all during the day it lasts me wake to sleep. I call, text, play games, and browse the net a little.
Auto brightness is garbage unfortunately but lux in the market works very well.
i run max brightness all the time
Using Lux. Auto-brightness calibrated to what looks good to me.
Auto brightness for me!

If you have root, you can set it to lower than manufacturer 0% with an app titled "Screen Filter." I don't have my GSIII yet but I've used this on older phones without issue.
Auto-brightness on battery, with 15 second screen timeout. (smart stay works 90% of the time, even when lit only by an LCD monitor)
100% brightness on charger, with 60 second screen timeout.
I use my own app (ChargeBright) to automatically toggle between the two settings, otherwise I'd go crazy.
Oh, I just realized that I'm not actually at 0%, but 15% (Samsung's minimum). Lux won't let you link below 15% in the free version, but it's still useful if you want to change what screen brightness corresponds with what ambient light.

Lag?

The phone has been great so far with one little issue. I observe a significant lag for a few minutes when I wake up in the morning after the phone is lying idle overnight. Is this normal? Or is it just me?
That's probably doze

Same here, I would say it's somewhat "normal" for a Android phone regardless it's a Pixel or Galaxy. I have to restart my Pixel 2 XL every so often for about 3 to 4 times a day. I am not a techy users but based on my 10 years iPhone use experience, iPhone is way better polished for user experience. So, yeah it's not a bug, just the way Android phones are.
I've had mine since release and have no lag issues. However I don't have Facebook Snapchat etc on my phone, and the only time I restart my phone is when doing an update.

No issues as such. Could be a rogue app or something else. Maybe you could test the phone in safe mode and see if you get the same results

Screen flickering on low brightness and 100% charge

I've noticed that on low brightness/dark backgrounds, I have some flickering on the 3a's screen when my phone is connected to the charger and has 100% charge. Initially I thought it might have been a PWM thing, and hadn't even thought that it was a charger issue. After finding that some people on earlier Pixel models had this problem I tried unplugging the charger and every time I do the flickering stops. It looks basically identical to this.
So far I have tried using a PWM free app, but on low brightness I can still see the flickering. I have tried the stock kernel as well as the new Elemental X kernel. I have tried with/without adaptive brightness as well as Night Mode. The only fix so far has been unplugging the charger.
The next thing I am going to do is just set the phone up to never charge to 100% and see how that goes. Some people with the original Pixel were saying the flickering went away with software updates and others said it didn't.
Anyone else having these flickering issues?
My rootless theory No.1 the battery voltage of pixel 3a is too high at full charge and can't hold itself...thus the voltage to the display driver goes out of the spec?
So, hardware or software?
So far my solution of limiting the charge to 90% seems to work. I am still interested if anyone has noticed this behavior. I found other people having this problem happening on previous Nexus/Pixel devices (I never noticed it with my N6 which I had been using before the 3a), but this device is so new there's not a lot of stuff published yet.
I feel the new thread with so many pages but no clues if it's hardware or software...
Just a thought, but could it be the "Always On Screen" being activated/deactivated rapidly? Just a thought.

Oneplus 8t getting hot

I have had my Oneplus 8t for about a month now and for the past couple of days I have noticed it getting pretty warm to the touch while in use. I have tried several things to fix this without any luck. Here is what I have tried so far.
Battery saving mode
Turned odd location and Bluetooth
Reduced refresh speed to 60
Reset app preferences
Closes all background apps
Rebooting
The phone gets warm just browsing the web or texting, and the battery is not draining fast at all.
Any ideas?
I really like this phone but cant stand having a hand warmer all the time!

Which ROM version are you on? Some fixes in the change log talk about lower power consumption and heat for the latest updates. A custom kernel might help too

Can you share what did you do to fix the issue? If someone else encounters the same problem they can give it a try. Thanks!
