Is anyone else having trouble with long pressing the home button not launching an assistant? I found the setting to switch the assistant from Bixby to Google Assistant. However, long pressing the home button doesn't launch anything no matter what assistant app is selected. fwiw my device is the VZW variant.

It works for me, but I'm on Nova Launcher.
Thanks @PsiPhiDan. Switching launchers is a good idea. Oddly enough, I just tried Nova Launcher and have the same issue. When I set up my device I opted to transfer settings from my Note 10+. Wondering if I should just wipe and start fresh.

That's your problem there have been numerous post about that on this forum. Do a FDR and setup from scratch and your problem will be gone.
Appreciate the tip. I somehow did not come across those posts and wasn't aware. I don't normally transfer anything to a new device but did not feel like setting up all of my notifications all over again so I guess that'll teach me lol. Thank you!

That's what I have clicked on in my screenshot above but there is no response at all to Long pressing the home button. in fact I tried the other choices that are available and none of them are triggered with a long press of the home button. a suggestion earlier in the thread believes it is because I opted to migrate my settings from my previous device.

I can confirm that a FDR (with no settings migration) fixed my issue.

This will remove that annoying little Wifi Reminder. I have tested this on my phone with 0 issues.
•You will need root
•You will a SQLite editor
1.Open Settings Storage > db > secure
2.Search for “wifi_networks_available_notification_on” (different providers will be different line numbers)
3.Edit that record to read a value of 0 < (that's a ZERO)
4.Reboot your phone
How to remove WIFI Popup Notification:
Open anycut.
Click 'new shortcut'
Click 'activity'
Click 'HiddenMenuWifiOffload'
use new home screen shortcut to turn it off
Thanks to tillithz
for some reason this did not work for me...
I am testing a kernel so that could be the cause. my phone booted kinda wired restarted like 3 times. one of those into the recovery.
after it came back up i went into the market and i got that dumb notice that wifi is available.
so I checked the settings, and it still said 0...
but again i think is cause of the custom kernel so that this with a grain of salt.
Only the "Any Cut" shortcut workaround works for me.

You may want to add a link to the free SQLite Editor here http://code.google.com/p/xdroidx/downloads/detail?name=SQLite Editor-9.apk
Also Update your post to say this only takes care of the notification not the WiFi pop-up. To eliminate the WiFi pop-up when opening apps you need to use any cut or similar to create a link to " hiddenmenuwifioffloading" and then disable it.

The op is talking about the constant notification under "ongoing" in the notification pull down. They are two separate things and require two method to eliminate.

I'm not sure if this belongs in Development or in Q&A, but regardless, this tutorial needs to be somewhere, as everyone asks about this constantly.
Also, OP, I would suggest updating your post to have the methods of removing both the ongoing notification and the pop-up, so we can help people get rid of Verizon's nonsense.
I'm all for responsible use of data, but spamming us with a pop-up on every app launch is not the way to handle things.

In your launcher, add a shortcut via the standard long-press method. For the shortcut's target, select Any Cut.
From here you will have four options. Select "Activity". From here, scroll down to the "H" area (they're alphabetized) until you find a value called "HiddenMenuWifiOffload" and select it.
Then, open your new shortcut from your launcher. Select "Disable" and press "Okay" at the bottom, then you can use Back or Home to exit out.
You may need to restart for this to take effect (not sure), but this should disable the pop-up when launching apps.

The ongoing notification when you have a headset attached can be disabled as well, by freezing the ContextAware application. I froze mine with Titanium Backup, but it's possible you could do it with the stock ICS method.

Ya, that may not be the best idea. AFAIK that is the way in the stock ROM to switch input methods. After I did a factory reset I tried the press and hold on a textbox to get the input selection popup to show and it never would. I figured out whenever I had a cursor in the textbox and the keyboard open that clicking that icon is the same thing.

I thought that was the NFC icon?
Also I was hoping this was a real hack. My understanding is that these just disable the popups. What I hate to think about is that there's processes being used to scan for wifi even when wifi is turned "off". Wifi isn't turned off is the phone pops up telling you wifi is close. This uses battery. No Verizon I don't want to use wifi. I want to use my unlimited data plan you keep f*****g me in the ass to keep. That's the only reason I let you f**k my ass.
This is in no way mine and all credit goes to the Original Developer/s but just in case you hadnt seen it.

I am waiting on the latest files to finish uploading then will test on my SGS3 and report.
So i'm running a stock rom rooted. Installed and checked permissions and they seem to be fine.
When i run the voice search app, if it comes up and doesn't automatically come up waiting for my speech i have to click on the search bar and then it will work. The voice search works without an issue and comes up, and the Google Now Cards work as far as a i can tell the same way they were working when i was running the CM10 Rom.
I haven't found any negatives beyond the sketchy voice start up yet, but just in case don't forget to BACKUP!!!
Yes! Can't wait to try this! Now I can wait for cm10's bugs to be fixed

Double tapping home brings me to a dialer, but adding a search widget to the home screen and clicking the voice buttons brings up cards perfect. W00t!
when i double tap to bring it up, it doesn't recognize me talking, so it says 'didn't catch that'. when i go to the app itself from the search bar, i can tap the mic once and it recognizes everything i say, but when i tap the mic to do another search, it won't activate without hitting refresh.
i'm using the mikeyxda version 2
Yeah I installed this and my voice search app got all messed up, kept saying "I didnt catch that" even though I said nothing. Also i couldnt back out of the app once in it with the back button, I had to go to home then kill it with task mngr. I cant wait for all the bugs to get worked out cuz I really liked Now. Keep us posted.
They have updated the original post to include new instructions and an updated file. I flashed the file last night and most of my little issues are fixed.
I still have the issue where i cant back out and have to go back using the home button.
I would say if you are having issues where it doesnt understand what you are saying double check your permissions and make sure your 'voice search' that comes up is a white screen and not a black or dark box. The dark box is still your old voice search.
I don't see any updates on there. You're talking about the link in your original post right?

Maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere, but my cards only work when I'm on wifi... is this how Google Now is supposed to work? The voice search works great with or without wifi.
I am using the newest files Mikeyxda's version 6. When I'm not on wifi, the cards try refreshing but nothing comes up.
Should I try deleting the older zip file? What is the best way to delete the older file and any data that comes with it?
EDIT: Now it seems to be working... strange.
Voice was working fine for me, but the app still would freeze up from time to time. Trying to enter a simple web search into the search box though for the web causes it to hang and do nothing 95% of the time for me.

I can confirm this. Just installed Samsung's latest update for S7 and after that, if an app is used to lock the screen (e.g. Screen Off and Lock) the phone always requires pattern (or PIN or password) to unlock. Fingerprint recognition can be used only if the phone was locked by power button or time out. This is not a one-time event. It happens every time and won't go away until you stop using a screen locking app.

Yes this also happens to me. I have installed lots of different lock screen apps, all same problem.
Yes, I finally found the culprit... Nova Launcher "double tap gesture" to lock the screen requires Device Administration permission. If you toggle it on then the fingerprint unlock becomes unavailable. Thanks for all feedback !!
Yepp, I just got the update a few mins ago and this was the first thing I noticed. I'm a bit annoyed and I've found no fix.

I tried a few things but couldn't replicate what you are experiencing. Are you running Good Lock? I know it has a feature that modifies multi window, but I don't know if it would cause the issue you have.
Did you take the ota directly from the carrier? Or did you flash the new pie update? Mine came from the carrier last Thursday. Today, I backed up everything and did a factory reset and it feels like it's running smoother. Maybe that could fix your issue.
Turns out it was a bug in Good Lock's Multistar. They pushed an update last night that fixed the problem for me. Thanks to all for trying to help.
