Format or wipe in TWRP with stock rom for factory reset? - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

Hi,
Fist time, my apologies if this doubt or question is "stupid"...
I'm new in twrp...
I want use the stock rom, Iwas installed TWRP , root the device, change some files for VoLTE and all works fine.
But I want made a full factory reset (also for calibrate battery).
I was go to TWRP and presh Wipe (no advanced wipe), this made a reset but I view that aren't full factory reset (some files continue in internal storage...etc...).
I view that, are a Format option in TWRP-Wipe-Advanced options, if use format, format my rom? I question this because, also, I want decrypt my phone, and after read in google and some posts I view some posts with the option for format, but like indicate, I want use my stock rom of HTC u11 but I'm not sure if format delete my o.s./rom and then need install stock rom.
If the format option isn't for decrypt and factory reset, are wipe, wipe data, cache and davilk cache, options for full factory reset?
Again, sorry if this question is...rookie question...I search in google, in this forum, but I don't view exact how made and I have very afraid of doing it wrong.
Thanks and regards.
PS: Sorry my english

Auto reply:
First, format data.
Then, advanced options in wipe, check Dalvik / ART Cache, Cache and Data, then wipe.
With this, hard reset.
The first time I made the wipe with not format data, not made wipe for decryption, for this reasson, first we need format data, then, we can check this options and wipe works fine.
Regards.

[Q] Update question?

Hi people, just a quicky! If you update NSCollab 1.0.38 to 1.0.39, do you have to delete data & dalvik cache (factory restore!) like it's a new installation, or can you just do a delete dalvik cache? Only I did the delete dalvik cache ONLY method for the update & had no problems, but I'm now presuming that if you don't do the full wipe, then really in essence you're effectively not really fully updating the whole system as you would be if wiping it first (through ClockworkMod Recovery,(RomManager!)!?
TIA!
There is no need to fully wipe when doing that minor upgrade to 1.0.39. I think you only need to fully wipe when changing ROMs. You probably do not even have to wipe Dalvik cache but since it only takes a few minutes to reload it, I would do it anyway.
Data wipe is completely overkill, however.

Thanks Apolyxon for your quick reply! I had thaught as much, as I knew wiping data also would effectively commit a factory restore & I would lose all my apps, settings etc! Just wanted to be sure!

[Q] flash rom without erasing content?

I'm running CM7 and would like to try out the MIUI rom. Do I need to wipe data/factory reset in recovery before flashing the new rom? Also, is there anything I should do outside of a nandroid backup before flashing a new rom? This is my first time flashing a different rom.
In your case, yes.
Developers and their ROMs vary in the changes they make, and while some might need no wiping, many do.
As a result, as a general safe consensus, the following is usually recommended to avoid all possible repercussions.
1. factory reset
2. format/cache
3. format/system
4. wipe dalvik cache
Again, this isn't always necessary, but when moving from one ROM to another, this is a good idea.

Cool, man. Thanks for the quick reply! Was hoping I could avoid a data loss. Flashing now.
I've used Titanium Backup whenever I've switched roms, and it's been super handy.
You can usually safely just wipe the cache, format the system and wipe the Dalvik Cache and leave the data partition alone (as long as the rom is using the same file system type). Then on the first boot all your previously installed user apps will magically reappear, but your first boot will take much longer.

[Q] If phone isn't rooted, does it mean I'm unable to wipe...

....to wipe unneeded files in the dalvik cache, and so they will add up over time and take a lot of space and make the phone slower? Therefore it is a MUST to root one's phone?
Is that a correct assumption?
Thanks!
Try it. Use any file manager, go to /cache/dalvik-cache, and delete something, or everything.
The reason why it is called a cache is to speed up the phone.
It won't take up memory because of the way the phones storage is partitioned.

For formating caches you could use file manager but it also need root permission...
And until you flash other custom rom you need not to wipe cache...
Apps cache is being created for the first time you boot your phone for better application launch...
So if you got a serious problem of force crash on stock rom, please do full reset...

You can use Factory Reset from Settings menu.
guys...
Guys, please read the original post.
Anyway, I tried unrooting my phone and deleting contents of dalvik cache. As expected, this is what happened:
1. Using ES File Explorer, WAS NOT ABLE to access the /data/dalvik-cache folder. It showed "Empty folder" or something like that.
2. Using Root Explorer, message that read "You're phone doesn't seem to be rooted, etc. etc. " (cannot access folder also)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So here's my new set of questions:
1. Does factory reset erase dalvik-cache? (I would assume so)
2. If phone is unrooted, dalvik cache contents cannot be accessed or deleted (as I have proven). Does that mean they will add up over time (unless you factory reset the phone??) and cause problems like making the phone slower?
Hope that's clear.
Thanks!!!
What phone are you using? If for samsung, you can still wipe that in stock recovery even if you are unrooted...
Dalvik cache is in your /data partition, so yeah, it will be erased if you factory reset...your phone should manage dalvik by itself, it should not build up (except if you mess with it), so don't worry...
Ryuinferno, hello. I'm using Samsung Galaxy Ace. So how do I wipe the dalvik cache in stock recovery of unrooted phone? Are you referring to factory reset / data wipe? I know that already. I know that already. If you're referring to something else, please let me know.
Are you sure android phones manage the dalvik cache by themselves? Because sometimes when I uninstall an app, a related file would still be left in dalvik. I would then manually delete it or delete it using Titanium Backup. Also, why does Titanium Backup have an option to "Clean up the Dalvik cache..." if the phone manages it by itself?
Thanks!!!

Even wiping dalvik cache will cause apps to misbehave in you don't factory reset ...
If you are rooted , it will also have same effect ...
So do factory reset if you are in stock ROM and full wipe if you are on custom ROM ...

Hmm...I can't remember too well as I left stock recovery too long...never left my phone unrooted......I think there is a wipe cache option in stock recovery but I am not sure whether will it wipe dalvik or not...
Titanium backup has an option to wipe dalvik because when changing ROMs/restoring apps, the current dalvik may be conflicting with the newly restored app...that is why you need to rebuild them...usually the old unused dalvik should be cleared upon a reboot...
"Hmm...I can't remember too well as I left stock recovery too long...never left my phone unrooted......I think there is a wipe cache option in stock recovery but I am not sure whether will it wipe dalvik or not..."
Maybe not? Because wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache are two separate options in ClockworkMOD Recovery, is it not? Or maybe in stock recovery, it DOES wipe dalvik as well....

[Q] How to do a complete format of the N5

Hey Guys,
I wanted my phone to be complete pure stock again. So I followed the instructions of this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701
But after flashing the ROM, I have still old data somewhere on the phone. For example, after the first reboot, my old background was set again. Also, if I want to access my 'SDCARD' it is very laggy and I don't see all data.
Also after flashing, some apps don't work...
Thats why I wanted to know, how to format the complete N5, so that there are no data left? (I have CWM installed)
Can anyone of you give me an advice how to do that?
Best greetz,
Wostl
Did you wipe after/before flashing?
I did the 'wipe data/factory reset' as well as some format commands.
But I did not wipe the dalvik cache... Should I do that and all format commands?

Is Google restoring your phone when you first boot? That's most likely what's happening
Sent from my Nexus 9 using XDA Free mobile app
1. Flash the factory image.
2. When you go through the initial settings menu, make sure you deselect the option to restore apps and app data from backup on Google servers.
3. Don't use CWM, it's outdated and discontinued. Use TWRP (2.8.1.0) instead.
D'oh! Yes, of course I restored the data of the servers... That was problem number 1: solved.
But still I have troubles with accessing the sdcard. But I think that are some issues with the mtp drivers. I have a 64bit Win7-N version installed, thats a special version for the european market without mediaplayer and its datas. Is it possible, that in this version are some datas missing I need to connect via mtp?

Internal storage wipe in TWRP?

Hi guys. I want to install new custom rom via TWRP. I don't want to lose my media files such as my photos, my musics and my download files. But the loss of apps is not important. Can i don't wipe the "internal storage"? By doing this, my previous rom, will be completely erase or not? What i should wipe in "Advanced wipe" for install custom rom and delete all things except my media files?

You don't necessarily have to use the advanced wipes, what you are trying to do can be done with the default wipes, the default wipes are: wipe data, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache. The default wipe can be done just by selecting the "Wipe" option, then, on the next screen" at the top it will say "wipe data, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache", at the bottom, there will be a slider, just swipe the slider to perform the default wipe. You can do the same wipes by choosing the "advanced wipe" option, then select the data partition, cache partition and dalvik cache partition, then perform the wipe. Custom recoveries are designed to wipe /data but not /data/media, /data/media is where all your stuff in internal is located, that does not get wiped unless you choose the advanced wipe and then select the internal storage partition when performing the wipe.
Your /data/media will survive through any wipes or flashing that you do in TWRP, it will never wipe your personal data unless you specifically instruct it to.
