Shield TV rom on portable? - Shield Q&A

Hey guys! I'm new to XDA and customromming/rooting in general. Years ago I got a shield portable and although I really like the hardware, I thought that the software and specifically game library needed work. Well, the game library situation was fixed thanks to Steam Link's release, but I'd like to use my shield for a little more.
I recently gifted my Fire Stick to my parents so they could watch netflix with a proper remote instead of a mouse on a laptop, and was wondering if I could install a modern rom to my shield portable and hook it up to the TV to act as a slightly slower Shield TV 2020? I'm looking for a rom that has all of the Google goodies like Assistant, linking to ghome, the leanback launcher, and the 'chromecast built-in' feature. Any way that can be done?
PS: As I said I'm new to XDA, so I apologize if this thread was posted to the wrong section.

i want to share the love help me or learn a little bit

I just upgraded my rom to the new synergy r111 and i want to share the knowledge of the push of pix music and videos to the xbox as long as your on the same wifi network. Not sure if it matters with the DD-WRT on my router either but with the new additon of XBOX SMART GLASS, I am so impressed with the new xbox update and the new jellybean roms for the S3. If you learned or want to try something new please give me some help so i can thank the developers in the other forum. other than that your welcome to tell me how you knew about this along time ago and how i suck and am old. Happy weekend!
edit: i beleieve its the samsung part of the app that handles this but i cant stress how nice it is to not have to use your controller and push netflix or espn with smartglass from the front page of xbox dashboard or use the samsung push over wifi to watch movies or play music with your phone instantly. (if im vague its because im drunk*)
Yeah, you're vague.
What are you trying to say exactly? That the new Xbox app is cool? Because that's all I got....

That does sound like a neat trick to stream your phone's video playback to - or even control - an Xbox system, actually. We're all Wii here because it's most kid-friendly, but I'm impressed with what you have described.
I'm guessing it's not due to the custom firmware on your router that you mentioned, since Xbox SmartGlass is supposed to offer this function with most smartphones, correct? Or, have you seen elsewhere that some smartphones can't hookup to SmartGlass well?

[Q] recommendations for bluetooth controller?

Hey all, I've seen posts about the different kinds of controllers people use on their tf300 for playing games with and have looked around but haven't been able to find any discussions on which one(s) people think work the best/recommendations. I've been interested in getting at least one (hopefully not spending more than $25-30) and was curious on people's opinions who have tried any of the different ones out there?
Any help at all would be appreciated and I wanted to apologize as well if this topic has already been covered in a thread that I might have missed.
Right now it seems like the $50 Moga pro is the best one

I use a PS3 controller with the six-axis app. i think it works nicely. So if you already have a PS3, you already have a controller. The six-axis app lets you hap touched on the screen to buttons on the controller for games that don't support game pads.
I actually ended up picking up the last two they had in stock of this controller from gamestop yesterday because I had ran across it online/seen the reviews and they were so inexpensive. I thought I could try them out at least to get an idea of how they'd be and worst case just return them but so far on the mupen64+ emulator they've been working without a hitch. they're light but don't necessarily feel that cheap surprisingly so I'm looking forward to trying them out on different games out there. oh and mapping out the controller wasn't any trouble at all either.
I think if I end up doing more gaming than I am right now with my tablet then I'll try to get a ps3 controller and use the six-axis app, thanks for both your answers. if anybody else has any other contributions to add as well feel free

Nvidia shield console vs tablet

I need a little clarification. The Nvidia console is running the same type of android as the tablet but has integration with Android TV. So outside of a little bit of a spec boost why can't android TV be done on the Nvidia shield tablet using Console mode hooked up to a TV via HDMI? I'm really not seeing the difference in the two products other than some specs and hardware.

I just tried it then with my Xperia Z2 Tablet, I downloaded the apk from: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/leanback-launcher/. Then pressed home and selected it as my launcher. I then plugged my Xbox 360 controller into my OTG Cable, then into the Tablet. I was able to launch Leo's fortune without a hiccup. Try for yourself.
So technically I could do this with a MHL to HDMI adaptor, but im still going to be getting the Nvidia Shield because I want something permanent in my loungeroom

Did you have to root to do this? Also do you only need the launcher apk or any other files? Not sure if all the services would run the same.
My original point is I have the shield tablet not sure why it can't do exactly the same thing as the console.

I do have root but sideloading an APK doesnt require root. Try it yourself.
If you want that full Android TV experience though, I'd go with the Shield TV
I guess I don't k ow why the tablet can't do what the console does. They are so similar.

Maybe because they're two separate devices that are different things. While I guess I can see what you mean about them being similar, they're different form factors, meant fit different purposes. If you must, install adb drivers and sideload the launcher, or just transfer the apk and install. Tbh though, you're not missing out. True story - it's just a phone without its own screen with a limited launcher. The search function is kind of cool , but nothing amazing. You can say show me movies that won an Oscar in 2012 , or show me movies with Kevin Hart, and it will show you movies, but mostly not what your looking for. I only bought it because ive been streaming games via moonlight on my note 4, and I thought it would be nice to stream them to my tv.

Actually that is what I would like. Contextual search. Appletv is a letdown. Chrome cast has been good but I rather have the interface and the contextual search. I like how androidtv is laid out and interacts with Google now. With that said I already us the tablet so I not going to get the console, which brings me to the reason I am questioning why I can't recreate the same experience. I would like there is more than just the launcher.

Little bit of a spec boost? At least twice as powerful, and 4K at 60FPS to boot.
It also uses the android TV platform which even though it is based on 5.1.1 it is different then the tablet os.
Also the hardware is different.

Beside the spec boost what I want to to flash the android TV platform on my tablet but haven't seen a thread that does this. The lea back launcher is unresponsive when I use it (cannot tap anything on the screen).

For what it's worth, I have the same problem with most games using my Bluetooth controller gamepad. The only free games I found that worked well for my gamepad and my Nexus Player were Asphalt 8, BombSquad, Hungry Shark Evolution, and Beach Buggy Racing,
I'm speaking specifically about the Android TV versions of those games. I tried a Beach Buggy Racing that I found on Google Play from my Nexus 9 tablet for instance, and that one claimed to have gamepad support, but it only had limited joystick gamepad support, it didn't work as well with my gamepad as the Android TV version. And yet, there is no reason the Android TV version shouldn't work on a tablet, so I recommend that if the normal google play versions of those apps don't work with your gamepad, that you try to get the apks specfically from an Android TV Google Play instead and side load them onto your tablet.
Sadly even on Android TV, you'll still find slim pickings right now, but I suspect that's not going to last. Google is making a major push on Android TV right now. So I suspect that a year or two from now, you'll find many more good Android games with excellent gamepad controller support.
PS: Also, I assume that Riptide 2 should work pretty well, since that's the game they demo for gamepads during developer conferences. On a tablet, that game is $1.99, but on an Android TV, it's $4.95. I suspect that the tablet/phone version should work just as well as the Android TV version thought, since I've seen both form factors demoed with gamepads at conferences.
Ok thanks

Custom Roms with support for shield hub and shield controller?

K1 owner here. Really fed up with the terrible battery life I'm getting and was excited when I found out nvidia released a patch to fix it only to be immediately disappointed when they pulled it the same day. Many people on the Google plus page have recommended I use a custom ROM, and on my former nexus 7 2013 I usually did just that. However I invested in the controller and also like to use my tablet to play battlefront on my TV via nvidia game stream. Would I lose those features if I went to a custom ROM? Is there a " SAPPS" package to flash? Sorry if its been asked, been reading through 10 pages of custom ROM threads and can't find any info

Shield Hub (unless I am mistaken) is just another app and can be easily sideloaded. It actually just acts a front end for Google Play.
Regarding the controller I cannot say as I have no experience there.
