hey guys,
so father's day is coming, and we've screen the ad that says free phones with a new contract. If the HTC one S is included, I am planning to sign up for a new contract just for the phone, and then ETF.
From what I've read in other threads, I would sign up for a classic us t-mobile plan, get the phone, wait 1-2 months for the mail-in rebate to come in while I have to pay for service during those 2 months, and pay the $200 ETF as soon as I get the mail-in rebate.
Can someone confirm if this is true?
also, I am already in a T-mobile family plan. However, i am NOT the account holder. I am just one of the lines in the family plan. Will signing up and ETF'ing a brand new contract using my name in any way affect my current family plan?
Thank you very much

I can't answer all your questions, but I am part of a family plan. I am the account holder. Each person in the plan has their own upgrade date. You have to qualify for the upgrade so if you're already on there and they know your name, you may not qualify if you're not up for an upgrade. But I don't know how that works if you're getting your own plan.
I don't think it be a good idea, in order to get the rebate back they want you to get the 5gb internet at 35 bucks, plus you still have to pay the rate plan. 75 to 85 plus taxes depending on the rate plan. Rebate takes up to 10 weeks to come back so multiply that amount by atleast 3 months plus 35 activation fee. 250 for the HTC one s. Your getting close to the 500 dollars mark. Sure you got 250 back but was it really free? Not to mention whatever fee your getting charge in your family plan.

Is this possible with TMO? I seem to be running into a brick wall where I am required to sign up for a plan. I currently have the economical $30 monthly prepaid plan. Thanks!
Get and plan wait one minute and tell agent you want to cancel plan and don't know where you placed your device.

I'd like to cancel my plan, and I think I will because the service blows. But with the app lock, I can't unlock it for 40 days. I even called and told them I was going out of the country, but they sent me an email denying my unlock.
Here's my question: The original purchase of the phone came with a $50 charge for the plan. Then I just paid $57 for the first month. If I cancel now, will that original $50 I paid and the $57 get me the 2 months of service that I need in order for the unlock?
EDIT: I just called again. I didn't pay $50 for the first month, so they say. Also, I have to wait out the "buyers remorse" 14 days before they will submit the phone for unlock under the "international traveling" exception.
Also on 30 a month prepaid Walmart plan here. I was told I would need to buy in store this Friday
Hey fellas...I have the answer you seek because I just paid full price for mine also on the $30 plan
I started a new line of service, paid the $50 no credit check payment, paid for the phone full price. Otherwise you can't buy the phone outright (yet) So once I know my promotional gifts have been accepted and sent to me I'll cancel this line and get my $50 back via a prepaid card.

The question is if people who bought the phone in full can just return the phone and get this offer. Because it doesn't make sense to leave a free phone on the table.

Yea the newly added line requires a 24-mo financial agreement.

That's true a new line is a must. Since my wife doesn't care about her number, we got her a new line and will cancel her old one. I called and confirmed this and the new phone is on the way.

Just got the BOGO offer. Dialed 611, told them I wanted to add a line. From there, once I was connected with Sales, I told them I preordered a S7 Edge (I already have it, but I didn't mention that--even though it's pretty obvious since I'm a new customer and wouldn't be able to dial 611 from my old phone lol) and wanted to preorder another one so that I can do the BOGO offer. CSR didn't know about the offer yet, so he asked supervisor. As long as you order it before your order is completed (so before launch I'm guessing?), you are eligible for the BOGO. Paid about $460, have my order already being processed and almost ready to ship.
Once you get it you have to apply for the rebate I guess and you get the card with all the money for the device on it... Still charged monthly for it.. Only thing I wish is that device is just waived from bill. I guess you can still do that by using the card to directly pay off the EIP though..
TLDR; everyone here that has the phone or preorder it can still take advantage of this offer.
Great deal, came at a time where I was actually going to buy another phone for my boyfriend anyways, so I'm pretty stoked I got it for free lol.
Edit: The promocode doesn't work yet. But you have 30 days to submit the offer anyways.

Did the same thing and they didn't even care if I had the S7 Edge already and I told them that I would cancel my other line and they said as long as you add a line that's all they care about. So there ya go.
Wonder if i can do this and still get the VR headset and netflix.
As long as you regester device before the end date for that. This doesn't affect the pre-order bonus.

Cool. will do
Thinking about getting my brother a phone to replace his LG G3 with this. Anyone see a reason the below scenario won't work?
I was going to pickup an S7 tomorrow in store and add a new line in order to get the BOGO from my S7 Edge. After activating it, take the SIM out and put his in it. Although we'll initially have to pay $10 + EIP for the S7, once the reimbursement card comes in the mail, I'd pay off the EIP and the phone would be owned outright. I'd then cancel the new line and get the $10 off my account. The only hitch I see is that cancelling the line makes the full balance due on the phone, but it would be paid off in full, so that wouldn't affect anything.
Am I missing anything obvious?

I think you'd have to keep the line, and you're correct about the full balance when cancelling the line. Also keep in mind, that this wipes out the Jump on Demand if you're on it. The guy at the store told me that they're trying to get rid of the JOD anyways. So, technically you'd have to keep the phone for 24 months.
Man I bought mine outright... I am dissapointed right now. Now I have to jump through hoops just to get one free... I hope they can make exceptions for people.

The fine print I read does mention the full balance coming due if cancelled, but that would be $0 if paid off using the card. Unless it's like a cable TV agreement when you receive the $400 card and is essentially a 2 year agreement to keep the device active.

T-Mobile doesn't technically do 24 month contracts anymore. As long as you pay off your EIP for the phone, you are good to close the line. I would keep the line open for 2-3 months to be safe so the rebate can be fully processed.
I currently have a Galaxy Note 4 with Sprint. When I originally purchased this phone, I paid $299 with a 2 year contract with a grandfathered unlimited data plan. Now, all of the advertised purchase options for phones are to do monthly payments. Can you still purchase a phone subsidized if you are on a grandfathered plan?
Thanks

Sprint advised me when i preordered my S8+ that the 2 year upgrades are done. Options are lease, 24 month payments, or but outright. Kind of sucks but you do get a$10/ month credit as an existing customer so my 24 month payments are like $25. That means I get the phone for like 650 instead of 850.

What are you talking about? There is no 10$ per month for the 24 months of a 24 month credit. What you be taking about is not there.
It is there. I'm on the SERO plan and I get $15/ month bill credit if I upgrade using lease or installment billing.

Sorry brother, I think VZ will give you a LG 43 inch TV if you go with them but that's for the LG G6 on 24 mo plan. But I haven't seen a thing on this phone and I believe subbing is dead because of no contract carrier aggregation. Every year I upgrade cash up front purchase for the new phone and if I'm unhappy I'll sell it on Swappa and move on. This way I'm not stuck and will always upgrade to whatever I want usually it costs me a couple hundred but that's nothing considering the benefits. Hope this helps.

It seems it varies from type of plan. I've got a unlimited data plan from like 6 or 8 years ago with 4 lines and the other guy has a SERO plan.
I think the credit is do to trying to equalize what you are already paying in phone subsidies built into your existing plan.

That's a BS. Cancel your order and get it directly from Samsung. Pay the full price or installments, call Sprint and activate your new device on your old plan.
I was able to pre-order the Galaxy S8/S8+ for $299/$399 on my grandfathered unlimited data plan on a business account.
Okay heres the skimmy.
If your on a business account, you still have the option for 2 year agreements. Thats buisness plan perk.
Regular OLD plans, like the Sero, Everything Data, some times the old unlimited plans, will get whats called a Loyalty lease credit. Which can be 10 -15 dollars depending on the device. You get that because of the fact that your on an older plan. No store, and now even customer care and online are supposed to offer a 2 year unless you're on business.
Depending on your plan, changing to an newer unlimted plan is usually cheaper anyway. one line on 1500 everything is 130 bucks...so not worth it.
Subsidized plans are done for all carriers.
2 year contracts are a thing of the past. If you have certain older plans you can get a $10 bill credit on your installment billing. Sprint brought back the Galaxy Forever plan where you can upgrade every year on an 18 month lease, however the phone has to be in good working condition with you turn it back in. You have the option the buy the phone after the lease term for a couple hundred dollars or so. Only benefit of lease is not having to pay the taxes when you pick up your phone, as it gets spread out of over the 18 months on your bill. I would just pre-order from Best Buy on installment billing and get the S8+ for $100 off. There are only a handful of older plans that are eligible for the bill credit. If you happen to have that plan you will be getting an S8+ for a total of $510 after credits and $100 pre-order promotion.
I have the available $10 a month bill credit which would be $240 over the life of the phone ... debating on this or the $150 Sam's club gift card

From what I understand as long as you're on a qualifying legacy plan, you will get a back office credit of 10 a month for just having it on a lease or installment agreement. If not call in and make sure they apply the promo to the line.
So you would get both. The card is from Sam's club, the promo is through sprint.

The essential phone is currently $145 on sprint!! Not a promo. This is the new normal pricing. This is basically a steal!!
Is there a way to buy it, pay off the contract and unlock? What would be the total cost? I am going to visit US in December and that might be a deal I am looking for, if possible.

You might want to go to the Sprint website and do a little more reading. The $5 x 18 months is a lease price. If you want to purchase it after your lease ends you still have to pay the difference between retail $699.99 and what you've paid in on the lease. The full retail price is listed as $699.99 as of a few minutes ago.

Nope, it's actually $145 (plus taxes) Activation can be waived through purchasing online, otherwise I believe it is $30 instore. $25 down, $5/month (flexlease) then a $30 payoff after the lease payments are complete. Yes you can pay the lease off early then payoff the phone. Getting it unlocked immediately after is a little more complicated/"hit or miss". Many people are able to unlock right after paying it off, others have been told they have to stay on Sprint for 50 days. You do have to upgrade/add a line or open an account.
But the price is confirmed and there is many accounts of this in the https://www.reddit.com/r/essential/ subreddit.

Many people are able to unlock right after paying it off, others have been told they have to stay on Sprint for 50 days. You do have to upgrade/add a line or open an account.
But the price is confirmed and there is many accounts of this in the https://www.reddit.com/r/essential/ subreddit.

I just got this price on it last night, buying the phone through Best Buy.
I thought the buyout price was still $175 at Sprint stores or sprint.com, rather than the $30 that's showing up at Best Buy... but maybe not?
I had my phone paid for and unlocked within 12 hours of receiving.
25 down + 90 + 30 + taxes
I can verify first hand this is legit. View my post history where I went into more detail in another thread.
Okay I stand corrected. Online it still shows that info on the site. I guess they have a special "pay off" price.
Just signed up for this one. Phone should be here Tuesday. Contract shows $25 down, $5 a month for 18 months with buyout of $30. With taxes my total is $157.
I'll report back when I pay it off and any issues with it.

How did you get the phone unlocked? Chat on website or call support?

I didn't even have to deal with customer support. Paid off the phone, next day went to UICC unlock in the phone menu, it unlocked fine. Put in an AT&T sim to test out calls and data work just fine.

Don't worry if it isn't unlocked yet tomorrow either. Took mine two days after paying it off before I could do the UICC unlock, but it's been working great ever since.
I'm new in the US and i dont know how the contract works, i went to Sprint store to buy this and they told me that i'll have to get a plan with the phone which was 45$ a month. I wanna know if there's a way to get just the phone and not the plan. And if i have a friend who uses sprint, can i get the phone showing his plan and not getting any new plan?

You have to get the plan, but you can transfer it or cancel it anytime. What I did (as recommended by the internet) is the following: Get the phone and the $45 plan, pay off the lease, wait +-2 days until the phone is unlocked, then get this simcard off of amazon: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B013OUS19E/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You then transfer your sprint line to that simcard. Because it is a pay as you go sim you don't have to pay anything for it and can just let the number die, at the same time it will disappear from your sprint account and because the month wasn't over yet you won't be charged for it.
The only problem if you're new to the us might be your credit score. If you don't have one or it's low then I don't think they'll approve you for the lease.

You can buy the phone directly from essential website with no contracts. You can buy it from Amazon with no contracts. And you can buy it from Best Buy with no contracts. The price is $499.09 from essential and Amazon, and sometimes it's $449.00 at Best Buy.

Phone was locked right off the bat, online order. I popped in the Cricket sim before the Sprint with no luck. Popped the Sprint sim back in, let it register on the network and then called customer service. Pay off was $120 on top of the $37 i had already paid, so $157 total. Amount matched the lease with purchase price option (buyout)
Requested the phone unlocked for international travel and the agent put in the request and I have the confirmation #'s for ending the lease and the request for phone unlock. Told 3-5 business days for unlock. We will see how it goes. Plan to check the UICC button over holiday weekend.
