oem unlocking greyed out - OnePlus 8 Questions & Answers

hi, i bought a oneplus 8 5g from sprint today and i am trying to root it before i load my stuff to it (the bootloader menu mentions its product name is kona).
when i go to developer options, i am able to turn on usb debugging but oem unlocking is greyed out.
Code:
[[email protected] ~]# adb reboot bootloader
shows
...secure boot - yes
device state - locked
Click to collapse
on the fone.
Code:
[[email protected] ~]# fastboot flashing unlock
FAILED (remote: 'Flashing Unlock is not allowed
')
Finished. Total time: 0.001s
[[email protected] ~]# fastboot oem unlock
FAILED (remote: 'Flashing Unlock is not allowed
')
Finished. Total time: 0.001s

Mine is also from sprint and greyed out.
TF?
Wonder how we enable that feature.

So I just tried to enter recovery mode and it asked me for a password??
I entered MY 4-digit unlock code and it failed.
I pressed "Forgot Password" and it said "You will lose all music, photos, etc..."
I couldn't simply exit the screen. I had to hold PWR+VolUp to reset.
Is that because OEM unlock is greyed out?
Edit: It is Recovery Mode that is password protected. Why?
Edit 2: It had to do with having a secure pin. Turn off secure unlock and you can get into recovery. OEM Unlock was still greyed out.

I believe oem unlocking is greyed out because you are still simlocked. If you just got the phone today there is no way you are unlocked either the XDA way or meet TMobile criteria for official unlock.
I saw another thread where the password was oneplus on something in the bootloader. Not sure if this was the place but can't hurt to try.
Sorry if either of these things is incorrect.

thanks to yoo both. i bought the fone outrite (no lease plan) so its mine.
my previous fone was an essential so I never knew the carrier got in the way of unlocking the boot loader... but i
remember having to wait til after payoff to get the fone carrier unlocked ( which is different). i gotta' admit, i have no idea what all these password and codes being mentioned are (wow, a lot has changed in three years).
i came across this site in my searches but i dont have an unlock code ? not sure the purpose of this site since fastboot mode doesnt have internet access ?

You need to call Sprint or--
From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi & Internet > SIM & Network > Advanced.
Wait while the device connects to the server.
Choose the desired device unlock type:
Permanent Unlock
Temporary Unlock - requires a mobile data connection
Wait while the device requests the unlock.
If successful, restart the device to apply the settings.
Permanent Success
Temporary Success
If you do not restart the device, a persistent alert will appear in the notification tray. Then go to Oneplus/unlock token. You have to wait usually 7 days for them to send an "Unlock bin.file. Then look around on our sites on how to unlock your phone. Hope this helps.:highfive:

^thanks, it says that it is not eligible for carrier unlock which is strange becuz i bought the fone (not on a payment lease). stranger that i dont know what the carrier unlock has to do with the bootloader (to me, it sounds like the volume knob on a car stereo causing the engine to overheat) ?
edit:
i called customer service. they told me i have to wait 50 days. they transferred me to tech support so i am waiting.

Mine is also locked for 50 days and still on lease.... Damn

I'm with sprint as well. My device is paid off and I've had it for over 60 days. I've been getting jerked around by these (can't say the real word or I'll get another warning) very intelligent and helpful experts. They start helpful as all hell then soon as I mention the unlock they get real sketchy and I end up transfered or mysteriously disconnected. I got disconnected from a man named Kenneth earlier today, it reconnected to a Jose who said hello my name is Ralph.
I finally asked a woman named Alysha why this was so damned difficult. The device is mine. I meet all criteria, and it's the damned law they can't deny me. She said I must cancel the phone line to make it "free" to unlock.
Bout ready to spaz out. Can anyone please help or anything?

[Q] Samsung Focus Unlock Code (ATT)

not sure if this belongs in this board, but Ive been calling ATT for a while now to get an unlock code for my overseas trip.
I got mine, but...
I just don't know how exactly I'm supposed to enter it, Ive been getting mixed messages from each rep involving the steps, but the code seems to be the same.
Can someone tell me how to enter it?
---things they've told me:
- you need a diff carrier's sim card
- you dont need a diff carriers sim card
- you need to enter stuff like (#7563*638*.........)
- you dont need to enter stuff like (#7563*638*.........)
Well I just called ATT and was given my unlock code... The directions given weren't the best but managed to get it unlocked to hopefully I can help.
The woman on the phone gave me a long winded code #746...*638*742.....# Which obviously didn't work since there is no option to type in # or * when getting to the unlock screen. So I just started typing in the different numbers she gave me. I typed in the second series of 742... numbers which was 8 digits in total and hit enter and my phone was unlocked. I should also mention I did have an Australia sim card in when doing this so I'm not sure whether or not another sim is needed in the process.
Hope this helps and you can get it to work...
what is the 742 number sequence they gave you? id like to try it with my unlock code.
I actually left the code I was give at work so can't give it to you ATM... From what I've read all each individual phone has its own unique code so its doubtful mine would work anyway.
Basically what I did is entered the last 8 numbers that ATT gave me with my Aussie sim in the phone. If you're still not able to get it to work tomorrow I'll find my code at work and you can see if it'd randomly work for you.
I still haven't been able to unlock mine.
Could you please give me a step-by-step guide for unlocking my phone the way that you did?
I just need the steps and the 742 number, i already have my code.
Thank you.
Found this (and cleaned it a bit):
How to enter the unlock code for Samsung Focus (aka NCK)?
To enter unlock code for most Samsung:
Method 1:
1. Insert a foreign sim card
2. Enter the PIN if the card has it
3. now enter code NCK
=> the phone should be unlocked
If your phone does not ask for an unlock code:
Method 2:
1. Switch ON your phone with a non accepted SIM Card
2. Compose:
#7465625*638*CODE#
OR
*#7465625*638*CODE#
OR
#0111*CODE#
WARNING: entering wrong code 3 times or more will FREEZE the phone and you will need an UNFREEZE code (another one).
Hope one of above works for you.
Samsung Focus Unlock worked..
Thanks to Zehns10, the instructions worked perfect. Not only the AT&T person spent an hour trying to help me without success, but I also spent an hour with Samsung Technical Support Level 3 guys and it was a total waste of time.
The key to unlocking your Samsung Focus phone is to have a "NON AT&T SIM CARD" with you and insert that in your phone to proceed with unlocking. Both AT&T and Samsung Tech support will tell you to take the SIM card off and try all kinds of stuff and it simply won't work.
Happy camper, I am now!
AbleFarmer.
Yep, my phones unlocked now
Thanks.

I've asked AT&T (just in case) via email and they send me an unlock code with complete instructions including that step (non-AT&T sim card). Total time spent - less than 5 minutes (except waiting for reply, of course). So if you not in hurry, use email
what is the procedure?
i got the unlock code from AT&T
but no procedure.
when I power on I get SIM ERROR
so...where do I enter this lovely code?
AT&T instructions (my copy&paste):
1. Power off the device and insert a non ATT SIM card.
2. Power on the handset.
3. Network Lock will display enter the device unlock code.
4. The SOS key (Left Soft Key) on the lower left side of the device keypad will change to OK. Select OK.
5. Display should read Network Lock Deactivated.
PLEASE NOTE: You only have five (5) tries to unlock the phone. If this process is unsuccessful five times in a row, the phone will be permanently locked to the AT&T network.

Sir, I have got my unlock code. When i enter a non accepted SIM card i am getting an error "Incorrect SIM". It does not ask for unlock code. I want to try Method 2 mentioned by you but i am not quite sure what "Compose" means as mentioned in step 2. Also a few screenshots or a video tutorial demonstrating method 2 will be a great help.
Thanks in advance.

Ask your provider (T-Mobile).
question?
can I ask a really dumb question:
below Method 1 says "3. now enter code NCK" .... Where? using what? the widget that pops up asking for the Pin is a numeric keypad only.
what is it that allows the 'input' of "NCK"???
and similarly, in Method 2, what device/widget/applet allows the input of "CODE" ??
i guess others know this, but so-called "legacy" SIM's are not liked by the i917

I live in Egypt and I won a Samsung Focus S in a Windows Phone development competition (it was held by Microsoft Egypt).
The only problem is that it's locked by AT&T and I'm unable to use my Vodafone Egypt SIM.
I contacted Microsoft here but they keep telling me that they'll get me the code and they don't, so I decided to do this myself.
Can you tell me how to contact AT&T to get the unlock code? I don't think I can call them because that would cost me A LOT (international calls here are very expensive), and tell me what I need to say to them in order for them to give me the code
Contact AT&T via email (see my posts above) or just pay $20 to these guys: http://www.samsungimeiunlock.com/samsung-focus-s-unlock (I hope, $20 is not A LOT for you? )
Ok so I just discovered that I can call AT&T's customer service from Skype for free
So I called them and I told them about my case and gave them my IMEI number, but they couldn't find my unlock code
I asked them what could be the reason for that, they told me that with new phones like mine, the manufacturer doesn't release the unlock codes to the carriers until some time has passed, that time can be a month or a year or forever!
Can someone tell me why would Samsung do this? and does that mean I'll have to use samsungimeiunlock.com to SIM Unlock my phone?
20$ isn't that much (it's approximately 120 Egyptian pounds), but I would've preferred if I was able to get it for free

XDA Q&A isn't the best place to ask rhetorical questions. Forward your question to Samsung. Also, as for samsungimeiunlock.com better to ask samsungimeiunlock.com guys directly (I'm not working on samsungimeiunlock.com).

Strangest of situations about Bootloader

So i have been battling to unlock my bootloader since i got the my phone(end of august). I have not been successful at all and i cannot figure at a solution. I have emailed emuifans and [email protected] to send me my bootloader code to no avail(mailed them about a month ago). So i decided to try and connect 14 straight days just in case this works. I downloaded the chinese APK HiApp and logged in 17 days in a row. I am still faceing the 14 days id wall. So i came here in search of help cause if i expected anything from Huawei i would be a goner by now. So:
1)Is this the correct way to get the bootloader code or i was hitting my head to the wall all this time?
2)Is there a Update i could do so i can get to an unlocked bootloader state?
3)Once you unlock the bootloader and you change firmware is there a possibility that it will get locked again through an update(without you explicitly locking it)?
So far my experience tinkering with this huawei hasn't been the greatest while my previous(p6 and U8800) has been phenomenal. I have a Dual sim DL00

Went, logged in,pressed bootloader, filled the phone details AND it still asks me to wait 14 days. If you see the attachment on my first post you will notice its the website and says it needs the id to be logged for more than 14 days.
Ok....for me it happened straight away...I registered via the PC and it was instant. Your other option is to use HCU Client app and pay 4 credits and you will get it straight away.
Mate....if you have no luck, If you send me (PRIVATE MESSAGE) all the info required ( view the image from the link I shared in Original response to fine what info is needed) I can enter the details via my account and send you the unlock code. I have used my account to unlock two different imei codes and I don't think there are any limitations to howmany I can run through my account....some one else may have an opinion on this however?
Any way just an offer, you may feel nervous about sending on your private phone details to total stranger, I would....totally up to you, I certainly would delete and make sure they were never made public ...offer is there.

Im considering using the DC unlocker option since i can get nowhere with huawei but im afraid if the phone will relock if i flash a Huawei rom again. Thus my 3rd question in the original thread.
I used Dc.unlocker with the app from same author. Its a bit less expensive. Once you get the code, its for life. Write it somewhere.to not loose it, or keep the mail receved.

[Q]Is the Huawei H710VL bootloader-unlockable, even WITH the unlock code from Huawei?

Little bit of background first...
Finally got my parents (senior citizens) into the smartphone era after StraightTalk starting doing BYOP and I'd had good service so far, but rather than use his old HTC phone which badly needed replacing, he opted to buy the Huawei Sensa (H710VL) branded by TRACFONE and with service via StraightTalk. Fast forward several months, and the old man has discovered a deal for senior citizens from T-Mobile that he likes better, and has opted to switch carriers. Well, he tried to do BYOP with TMOUS and just continue using the H710VL which he likes, but was informed that they wouldn't unlock the phone for another month because they won't do so until you've had it for a year. So therein came my opportunity to promise something I apparently cannot deliver (I told him I'd take the phone home and unlock it for him)!) He (wisely) decided not to wait for me, and went ahead and bought a new phone from TMOUS so he could initiate his new service with them without delay. But I still want to unlock this phone for him, if at all possible!
Fast-forward a few more days--well, I've been screwing around with this phone in the evenings for the past three days, trying to get the bootloader unlocked, and I'm at an impasse. First I had to tangle with the Google account verification, which wouldn't let me even sign into the phone after boot and get to the home screen because I had done a hard reset of the phone first, and didn't have the old man's Google account and password with which to sign back in. Fortunately, intrepid folks who came before me already found a way around that first hurdle. I took the following steps:
1. Went thru HWStartupGuide process until I was able to connect to my home WiFi network. So, internet connection is established.
2. Backed out of there to get to the first setup screen after the TRACFONE splash screen on boot, and used the "emergency calls only" escape hatch to navigate to the stock dialer app.
3. In stock dialer app, entered (without the quotation marks) "*#*#6130#*#*" which took me to the SIM Card Settings screen. Tapped three-dot menu, tapped, "Add SIM Contact," which took me to the native Huawei Contacts app. In Contacts app for the SIM card, tapped "Add Contact," made dummy contact called "Test" with a ph# of 1234. From list of contacts, tapped the "message" bubble icon next to the new "Test" contact, which opened the stock Messages app.
4. In stock Messages app, typed and sent message with the text "www.youtube.com." For obvious reasons the message doesn't send, but it does appear in the messages window, which renders the draft text's content into a hyperlink to YouTube. Bingo! Tapped link and opened up the YouTube app.
5. From the YouTube app, tapped the three-dot menu again, and tapped Privacy Policy from there. Now I'm into Chrome! Opened Chrome without signing in, and navigated to Google.com.
6. From Google.com, searched and then downloaded apk for Test DPC app. Installed Test DPC and set myself up as the new device owner.
7. Now that I'm the device owner, you'd think it would bypass the Google account verification requirement in HWStartupGuide, but no dice. So, rebooted, took same steps to get back into Chrome. From Chrome, I was able to get to the stock Google device search and navigate to the Settings app.
8. From device Settings app, changed settings to allow installations from unknown sources, then I set the option to allow USB debugging, and opened up the dev options to select "Allow OEM Unlock" in preparation for unlocking the locked bootloader, using the unlock code previously sourced from the official Huawei EMUI unlock code site.
So, to sum up, I've got access to the device in general, can use the web and all the apps on the device, and was thus finally able to disable HWStartupGuide to prevent the previous headache from cropping up again. Here's where the impasse starts.
I have Android SDK and everything I need on my laptop (to the best of my knowledge) to facilitate unlocking, flashing, and all the other fun stuff we love to do with our phones.
I was able to confirm the USB and Android drivers are correct and working fine, as I got both fastboot and adb to recognize and list the device when connected via USB cable to the laptop, and it worked both in command prompt and in PowerShell. Fastboot and ADB commands appear to work when facilitated and entered correctly. That is...UNTIL I tried to use the "fastboot oem unlock <unlock code here>" command. It just says "FAILED" with no error code. I tried this from my stock boot options screen (the screen you get when you boot or restart with power and vol-down pressed), and from the stock recovery screen, both to no avail.
This is where I'm all twisted up. There either doesn't appear to be a true bootloader screen to navigate to, or it's purposefully inaccessible, and I don't know how to get to it. If you do a "adb reboot bootloader" command, it just reboots the phone to Android home screen. The only options from the boot options screen are "Power (turn phone off), "Start" (boot to Android home screen), "bar codes" (screen that shows bar codes for the phone's IMEI, Serial #, etc), and "reboot recovery" (stock EMUI recovery screen), where the only options are 'Wipe/Factory Data Reset," "Wipe Cache," and "Reboot."
I feel like if I could get to a true bootloader screen that allows me to enter adb or fastboot command strings in such fashion that you can enter it and then see the process play out on your device screen, then the unlock code from Huawei would probably work and the bootloader would be unlocked, thereby allowing me to root and flash a better ROM, or at least eliminate bloatware and optimize the device for performance. But for whatever reason, and I assume it's purposeful on the part of TRACFONE/StraightTalk, tbh, there isn't a fastboot-capable bootloader screen like my years of using HTC phones taught me to take for granted.
So there I be...stuck, even WITH the unlock code from Huawei! What a crock! I know TMOUS will apparently unlock it in a month or so, but to me, that's not the point. I should be able to accomplish it on my own with the unlock code I got from Huawei. And that's why I'm throwing my hands up and begging for help.
Is there anything else I can try? Is there any other devious way to perhaps flash a different bootloader interface onto the phone that would allow me to use fastboot commands properly? Is it possible to mount the SD card from bootloader and push an apk to it that would install some kind of generic bootloader screen? I'm now a little out of my league, but I am willing to try just about anything that anyone thinks might work. Any advice or suggestions warmly welcomed...not worried about bricking the phone or anything, as it's not much better than a paperweight in its current form anyway.
Thanks!!

Unlocking Bootloader

Looking for a little clarity on the bootloader unlocking procedure -- maybe I'm getting old, because I'm a bit lost.
No, not maybe -- I'm definitely getting old...
I've just received my Mi Mix 3 with MIUI Global, updated to 10.2 Stable OTA this afternoon, and my SIM card is inserted and working.
I have a Xiaomi account -- set it up when I got some of their Yeelight light strips a year or so ago -- and I can log in to the account at https://account.xiaomi.com. I've gone through the initial setup on the Mi Mix 3, adding the Mi account on the phone, and it shows I'm successfully logged in. I've enabled developer options, and in the developer options settings I've enabled both USB debugging and OEM unlocking. When I go into Settings -> Developer Options -> Mi Unlock Status, I'm prompted to agree to the necessary permissions for Mi Unlock to access my account, and I agree. The page then shows "This device is locked/The phone is secured" with a blurb about why the device should remain locked, then the steps to take to unlock the device if you understand and accept the risks. The steps it displays are:
1. Insert SIM card -- done
2. Turn off WiFi and use mobile data -- done
3. Tap "Add account" button to associate Mi account with this device -- done, with a success notification
4. Download unlock tool from website -- and here it gets iffy...
I go to http://en.miui.com/unlock, and click the Unlock button, then download the Mi Unlock Tool. I unzip into an empty directory, and run the miflash_unlock.exe as Administrator. In the app, I agree to the disclaimer, and enter my account details, then watch the spinner while the app checks to see if my Mi account has permissions. After a few seconds, I receive the error:
Account application area query failed
This repeats indefinitely if I accept the application's offer to "Try Again".
Does anyone know what this means? Does it mean my request to unlock has been denied? Maybe I'm stuck in the 72 hour waiting period I've heard about (though nothing on my phone, on the website, or in the unlock application indicates anything about a 72 hour wait)? Or is the app unable, for some undisclosed reason, to access my Mi account information? I'm a little stumped, here.
Looks like _maybe_ I've figured it out... Downloaded an older version of the unlock utility (v3.3.525.23). Gets me past the "Account application area query failed" error. Now, when trying to unlock, I'm getting this:
Couldn't unlock
After 71 hours of trying to unlock the device
Which I'm interpreting as meaning I just have to wait the 3 days.

OEM unlocking says "Connect to the Internet or contact your operator"

Hi, I bought a refurbished Pixel 3. I tried to unlock bootloader by: starting the device, skipping all set-up, enabling developer options, trying to enable "OEM unlocking". But it is greyed out with message "Connect to the Internet or contact your operator".
Then I tried to connect to wifi, still same message. Then I inserted a SIM card, still same message. I also rebooted a couple times, still nothing. Doing "adb reboot bootloader" shows that the bootloader is locked.
So what does this mean? I looked up online that some phones are from Verizon so they will not be able to be unlocked. Is this the case? How can I check this? If the bootloader is not unlockable I'm just going to return it x) which will be a pain in the a** since I'll have to pay return shipping and everything.
Thanks for any help!!

The IMEI will tell you if it is a Verizon phone. I believe Verizon IMEIs begin with 35. Google "IMEI lookup" and you'll find plenty of sites that will give you information on that phone.

Thanks, I tried that, it is indeed a Verizon model. Do you know if there is any way around this to unlock the bootloader? I guess I'll have to google around a bit to figure out if it's hopeless or not x)
There is no way to unlock a Verizon phone.
Hmm well I'm getting quite mixed signals here:

however:
- ro.oem_unlock_supported is 1
- and bootloader screen says "Product revision: MP1.0(ROW)", not "(VZW)"
- box says "ESIM" rather than "SIM"
and also in some threads users report being able to unlock verizon phones... So it's all very strange x)
Pretty much same here. Did you figure out something?
me too
Ok, so a brief update here, the results of my search over the last couple of days:
Most likely, your Pixel 3 cannot be unlocked, it has been locked by Verizon when activated on their network and we don't have a way to undo this OEM lock. If you bought it re-furbished or second hand, and OEM Unlocking is grayed out, the most likely is that there is nothing to do.

Use 'fastboot oem citadel' to unlock bootloader? (Verizon Pixel 3)
I unfortunately have a Pixel 3, from Verizon (when I bought it it was not described as a phone issued by Verizon had I known it I wouldn't have bought it). I'm trying to accomplish The impossible by finding some way to unlock the bootloader...

- This post pretends that it can be undone, but this has not been confirmed / applies only to very speecific cases:
