Any chance for root (ever)? - LG Velvet Questions & Answers

I have an option to get new phone with contract reneval. I like devices with strange "additions", thats why I had Moto Z3 Play before. And now I'm thinking about Velvet coz of it's Dual Screen.
However I need root for few apps I use (some for my own usage, some work related).
Do You believe that there will be a way to root Velvet in the nearest feature? Or ever?
I'm more asking if You believe there will be a way to fash Magisk patched kernel.
I know that nonflagship LG device doesnt even have an option to unlock bootoloader nd even the flagships (V60?) have blocked fastboot command, so unlocking does nothing...

https://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader.dev?categoryId=CTULRS0703

Sad to see this after I chose something else...
Still, as I read about other LG devices it seems that unlockable bootloader doesn't have to mean that there is access to fastboot commands. An without that there is no reason to unlock it.

I thought about a new phone for a long time and I hope you are wrong. because I chose velvet. previously i had g6 and i already miss & root mods a lot. and what did you buy?

Realme X3 Superzoom. At least there is a root solution already
And they should share the sources like they did with older devices.
I'll miss the 2nd screen, but... Had a chance to play with it and my carrier gives it for free (screen or headphones) along with 3rd year of warranty.

I waiting for headphines ? they add choice (screen or it) after i buy phone  and i worry about lg is coming down with smartphone ... Have nice day and good luck with powerusing :victory:

Headphones? I'd choose the screen. F**k their DAC
Maybe one day I'll get LG with Dual Screen? Will see. As I signed the contract in the store I have no way to change it (not sure if I want to).
Anyway, nice day to You too. I miejmy nadzieje, ze znajdzie sie sposob na roota na Velveta

In the dark
Is there anyway us as a collective to unlock the bootloader ourselves. I literally don't know like I'm very new to this and want to try it out a rooted device

got a velvet.
unlock bootloader was no prob.
but stock roms are in kdz format. uncompressable since last dev of un-kdz un-dz seems to support just old and smaller formats.
tried several boot.img's and twrp's that seem to be same chipset.
nothing worked so far. hopin some of the rom-gurus gets hot on that dual-screen feature/case...which works really good.
i didnt get it to work with root, but i dont give up hope.

just complete the process that wifredzik posted as link.
you ll get an unlock file from lg immediately.
enable developer options on your phone and in the following usb debugging.
boot into bootloader via adb and unlock as lg describes in the manual.
thats whats worked for me so far.

payed around with stock roms of other new mobile-phones that have the same chipset to extract the boot.img and modify it with magisk.
my strategy is to boot in with root, but without flashing partitions so that i can dump the original boot.img and modify with magisk just to flash it back.
but no other boot.img worked so far.
if there is somebody out there who can breakup the lg velvet stock rom (kdz-format) to intact img files please let me know.

the worst that can happen is that lg dont sends back the unlock.bin.
iv`e taken a look inside the file.
its encrypted. so, no way to create it the easy way by yourself...

H830 just can be rooted so can we unlock it from TMO?

I noticed that H830 has got rooted and ROM. So is it possible to find some methods to unlock it?
I just bought a brand new never activated H830 and I'm outside the USA.
I've got a method that used to work on older devices such as the m9, but I happened to get my device unlocked prior to root being available so I can't test it for myself anymore, the most I can do is find the files that need to be edited and someone else, such as yourself may be able to test it.
There's two options to go about this method:
1. Get a universal standard rom that works on all versions of the g5, that way the customization is of a standard g5, hence the the unlock app will no longer be the default unlock method, code entry will pop up.
2. Editing the customization file to the h850, or maybe another version of the g5, hence the system will not look to the unlock app, but look to the default code check.
I can't guarantee either method will work, since the g5 may be different or even the way the unlock app works.
I agree to test with you.
Just recieved mine sealed from eBay and need to unlock it somehow..
Just tell me what to do

If you can pull the customer.xml file we can look to make the mods to it and test the theory.
We can also try editing the build.prop file model number.
Though I don't think that's gonna be our major change.
Edit: I'd do it myself, but I'm not rooted and my system pull so far has yielded me limited success, most I can figure out is that the file is protected, which I can't access without root.

USCC V20 (US996) Bootloader Unlock/Root Discussion

Just a thread for the few USCC people here - I've tried to UL the bootloader using TMO instructions - no go. It will reboot into the bootloader but it asks for the unlock.bin key (fastboot oem unlock returns an unknown command error). So at least theirs that much
Phone will also boot into recovery, and I get the associated normal options there (clear, mount /system, wide device/cache, load update via ADB, load update via SD, view recovery logs, etc). Interesting thing happens when I select "run graphics test" from the recovery menu - it gives an error, then the "no command" icon, then multicolor circles rotating - but it says "erasing" then "installing system update" then goes back to the recovery menu. Not sure if it's normal, but it's interesting.
I'm not a dev or a software guy really, but would like to hear some thoughts on the USCC version...would love to have root like the TMO - especially since it will get into the fastboot menu. Wish I knew more so I could be more help.
Same I'd like to here more about this since the unlocked version comes with an unlocked bootloader. I think it's because the T-Mobile version got released first so they had the jump start, and the unlocked version took till the 11th to be released so it's like we're late.

you are talking about three different devices lol.. apparently USCC v20 is locked like everyone else.. TMobile typically allows BL unlocks, not because it was out first? and the unlocked variant is obviously from LG and unlockable by default...

I seem to have a US996, but I got it early on. I believe it to be bootloader locked though, even though it's a developers device. I'm almost 100% sure it's the sim unlocked version as I tried a few sims and they worked. Anything I can do to help?

I recommended the officially unlocked variant of the V20 to @Abumarf believing he'd have no issues whatsoever in unlocking the bootloader. He purchased one off eBay before the phone was officially released and I believe it came with a user debug kernel. It seems similar to the engineering kernels for Samsung devices, as he has root access through the adb shell. Unlike the temporary root method that @me2151 had posted, it can survive reboots. Yet I'm surprised the fastboot command to unlock the bootloader returns with failure.

hopefully you are able to as it shouldnt really take any time at all lol.. it would really help a lot of ppl out if it is in fact a debug kernel..
the root we have is a temp tcp root shell using a context we cant really do anything we need to do at all so it was pretty much a dead end so far

yeah, the US cellular us996. it's different from the American unlocked us996. according to LG anyway, it lists it as two different phones.
I'm not on a US cellular one. I'm in an unlocked one with Verizon. the post above you said unlocked had unlocked bootloader. mines as unlocked as you get, and it doesn't have an unlocked bootloader.

Make yourselves heard. Let LG know we want the bootloader to be unlockable on the US996. I've talked to their live chat and they claim that they "didn't know people would want to unlock their bootloader". Show them we do.

Thanks for your enthusiasm but my method does not Unlock the bootloader so you should change your thread title.
As I told you I will open a thread when the method is fully tested by a few advanced user's who are testing it now and you will be given full credit for all your help.

If the bootloader was unlocked fully you would be able to use fastboot to flash the device but we cannot so the bootloader is still locked to all intense purposes.
The secure boot chain does appear to be broken so we can use SPFlashTool to flash and boot our TWRP recovery but the secure boot chain may still be working if you have never unlocked the bootloader before like on Android 7.x. This means TWRP may Not boot up for everyone. Like I said it needs to be fully tested.

Not to be pessimistic, but you do realise that even with all your precautions, people will still not read properly and will still brick their phones, no matter how many precautions you take. Even if you had an app that requires you to click one button to do everything, there are still people who will do it wrong. That said I think I know of one or 2 people in this Nokia 3 forum who were able to recover their phones using spflashtool AFTER the phone couldn't even be detected by their pc, even OST flashing was not possible .
Another thing is, all the Nokia 3 is last year's phone, I wonder how many experienced users will be buying the phone now, and experienced people are probably not the best way to get something 100% tested, because they know the right steps to take.
I think you should make your method public after you hear from SkaboXD

Sorry I replied to your PM before seeing this.
True there is no accounting for people but I don't want to get bogged down by noob's. If you and maybe SkaboXD would like to open a thread and manage it using the method then that would be fine by me as long as credit is give to Riadh300 the original tester and who informed me SPFlashTool still worked and myself of course.
Please read my PM about the bootloader condition as I recommend only previously unlocked devices try this for now until tested by Advanced user able to recover the device should anything go wrong (EFuse Blown).

Alright I understand your point now. One thing I wonder though is: would someone on nougat who has never unlocked bootloader be able to flash ost?
Just checked my phone, oem unlocking was set to off so you're right, your method doesn't actually affect the bootloader.
I actually don't mind posting your method and giving you guys the credit, I just thought that you would want to be the one to do so.
Anyway I'll wait to hear @SkaboXD thoughts before I decide on whether to put up the post

Before on 7.0 I flashed a TWRP I was working on via SPFlashTool bootloader locked and ended up in a never ending recovery bootloop which none advanced users may find difficult to get out of now this may of been because I screwed up the TWRP or more likely because the bootloader was Locked.
I did not try any other TWRP's until I was bootloader Unlocked and I have not had the recovery bootloop since.
Not sure about OST as SPFlashTool is by far the best tool for MediaTek devices and recovery of said devices remember the SoC manufacturer knows best and I only ever see problems when the OEM's try to move away from it like Sony did.
Happy for you to take the lead I am too busy in other threads to worry about it

I will lock bootloader and try this method of rooting. I think that is this the best method because it doesn't affect bootloader so you can have OTA updates. Just what is the root manager, SuperSU or Magisk?
I think that we could make a thread when this mehod is tested on both Nougat and Oreo with locked bootloader. As far as i read, Oreo is tested so only Nougat remains to test.

OK, one thing though, before flashing the recovery you might want to do a backup of the stock recovery if you don't already have one. That's what I did, so after I got root, flashed back my stock recovery. Magisk is the root manager ,

oh you mean you went through hoops to get your phone back? I thought you would say you got a stock recovery somewhere and flashed using spflashtool or used the ost method. I didn't actually expect you to outline the steps you used. BTW, first time I flashed twrp AFTER unlocking bootloader, I got stuck in a recovery bootloop too. I had to flash my phone with OST then retry the process again.
One other thing, I think OST is actually a propriety software that is supposed to work for lots of phones, at least I know that users of other non mediatek Nokia phones also use it to recover their phones (with the corresponding stock images of course)

Magisk hide allows you get OTA's see the Magisk thread and yes it will work on any android version.
@redweaver
I am glad you got out of the loop but your clearly a more advanced user hence why I ask you to test. :good:
The OST is very convoluted for use on MediaTek devices and is very unnecessary it also requires unnecessary FIH software to be installed on the phone to work properly.
They likely choose this method to work across different SoC's but it's not what MediaTek use SPFlashTool is MediaTeks own software.
EDIT: Sorry lost internet for a while then.
I continue: Good news is I do not think they will be able to remove SPFlashTool use as it's binary on device which lives on a none volatile area ram chip or radio chip and is loaded at the factory so I doubt it can be updated via a OTA. :fingers-crossed:
Sony actually replaced this and this is the only device I have been unable to recover and even Sony were replacing the boards of bricked devices but if they had left the Mediatek binary in there it would not of been a issue as SPFlashTool would of been able to recover them. :good:
guys, old thread, i know, different device, i know, but ive been in the dark and this is what most resembles my issue.

output encourages me to unlock first, howwever not a clue is given as to how to accomplish it. this isnt the flash a file type of unlocking, either, at least not oem provided. going nuts.

so per xda rules i cannot post where to go to unlock your bootloaders on the nokia 6.1 but if you google search you will find it. it's $5 and you provide your IEMI and i had the code and was unlocked within 10 minutes.
im not a dev but id love to start a discussion on how to build twrp and achieve root. i wanted to extract my boot.img and try to patch with magisk but im positive you need twrp to see the partition scheme and temp root to make a system dump. since this is an android one device its possible it follows the pixel scheme and has a/b partitions which makes it even harder for development of roms. but root should be possible if we have someone with the knowledge how to achieve it.
i just wanted to start a discussion and see where this takes us. this is a nice budget device and it deserves root.
im still not sure why its against the rules here to pay for a unlock when jcase used to promote the sunshine app to s-off and unlock bootloaders for $25 per phone.
ive attached a screenshot of my unlocked bootloader so people don't think im full of it. i have the USA 32gb / 3gb ram model from best buy.
let the fun begin! :fingers-crossed:
What carrier do you use? Does your phone normally after unlocking bootloader?

its a gsm unlocked phone but I use it on tmobile. yes its works fine. once you unlock the bootloader it does factory reset and wipe data.
it seems the only way to do a system dump is to buy a edl usb type c cable since we have no temp root or official firmware from nokia. if anybody has one of these cables and gets their bootloader unlocked we can get a system dump including the recovery.img to build twrp and the boot.img to patch with magisk.
I succed to unlock bootloader. I pay for it. I want to back up rom and find way to make custom recovery to flash magisk
why your bootloader ui is different ?
there's a word "one" after "android" ?

Shame no magisk currently or I would be off to buy a unlock key! Bought this phone on contract a month or two ago and am kinda missing magisk.
Just got my Nokia 6.1 yesterday. Got it unlocked. Any updates on rooting with Magisk?
I'll try with it tonight to check if any chance to do twrp and root our Nokia 6.1

You should read/search more...
In almost every thread is link how to unlock (because people needs to talk about that everywhere), for now no option to root, unless we have TWRP or the boot image. And you need to wait for Android P, it should be out in August, I think...

I can buy the cable and try to do that. I never done it, but I can Google it and try it.
I ordered the cable yesterday. I will try to get the files necessary for TWRP.

It only cost me $8, but I least I have it for future usage or to fix phone if bricked. Thanks for working on rooting this device. Everyone will be grateful for you time and work. I don't think I would have the knowledge needed to do it and would have had to do some research to learn about it. Thank you.
If someone make a twrp we can root it throw magisk. I am on android p

How us P compared to Oreo ? Speed and fluidity .?
I think oreo has better battery. P never stuck very quickly Rom and stable. Now that on holidays I found a new add. You can use phone and Google maps can run in.small window! Usefull .. the ROM came with the basic stock Google tools. I like it. I don't like that I can't make modifications like xposed remove some Google apps like player and add others. I don't like that Nokia hasn't software that you can unbrick your phone (lg has the lg bringe). I don't like that Nokia isn't official unlock the bootloaders.

I was watching how to compile roms... But we will need a device source tree for compiling roms
Before that we neet to unlock bootloader
Can anyone try this command in fastboot mode and confirm if bootloader unlocks?
fastboot oem unlock
Make sure u have backed up your data because it will wipe data
I have my warranty for 6 months left? so can anyone without warranty test it out?
I will start development on it after i am confident enough on compiling roms and i get my new laptop?

Yep, I'm sure someone could test it for you......that someone is YOU.
If you want it tested, test it yourself. You said your device is under warranty, that means if you brick it, you can get it replaced. If someone that does NOT have warranty bricks their device testing this for you, they will be stuck with a dead device and no way to get it replaced, whereas, YOU CAN IF IT GOES WRONG.
You're asking others to risk their device for your own convenience to protect your own device. That is is being spoiled, rude and inconsiderate.

Bro that command won't brick any device , plus have some common sense ... If anyone unlocks bootloader it's warrenty is voided
I'll try it myself if no one does and be the first one to respond then.... I garuntee you that... But after my warrenty period is over...
I haven't ordered anyone to do this ... Its upto that individual... There's no need to respond like that

Be sensible? I was being more sensible than you understand due to your un-awareness to certain things about android devices. You've unlocked the bootloader and used ROMs on 3-4 devices in the past 5 years, great, that gives you experience with the devices that you own. That doesn't mean much when it comes to other devices, though.
It wasn't so much a matter of whether it was a potential brick or not, it was the fact that you ask someone else to test instead of doing it yourself. Generally, using oem unlock command does not brick a device....but, you aren't exactly right. Running the oem unlock command CAN and HAS bricked devices, they are device specific scenarios though. I have an RCA tablet that is unrecoverable due to using fastboot to unlock bootloader and that was on 4.4, long before all the extra security measures implemented by manufacturers and carriers today ever came along. Bootloader unlocking these days can be much more tricky than it was on that old device. So, as you said, do your research. I wouldn't have said anything if I didn't already know.
Also, you are aware that even if you tried the command and it unlocked your bootloader, you could easily relock the bootloader, which wouldn't void your warranty unless the manufacturer/carrier was standing right there looking over your shoulder when you unlocked the bootloader?

It probably should work...
This is another device from this company running stock android ....
Also i have seen some guides online referring to same guide
I apologise for earlier rudeness ... But i meant to help up there .... there were people wanting to unlock bootloader and so i gave them a way of doing so.... But i should have framed my sentense in a better way...? I'll keep that in mind...
One thing i want to ask ..will the generic snapdragon 625 twrp work wiith this device?

My point was to be careful what you post when it comes to unlocking bootloader these days. Bootloader unlocking gets more tricky by the day with all the coding and security measures used by manufacturers and carriers as time goes on. They are getting better at creating roadblocks for people like us. As these measures evolve, more and more users are breaking devices due to encountering security measures on their device that they were unaware of.

I did a search for "generic TWRP for snapdragon 625".
I didn't find anything, all I found was mention of using treble.
I'm not sure there can even be such a thing as generic TWRP due to the way it has to be built specific to the hardware in the device.

Typically, a locked bootloader won't allow this to work, the locked bootloader will see that the TWRP.img is not your stock recovery and won't allow it to boot.
