Widget for Huawei HiLink 3G/LTE Dongles - Android Apps and Games

As the owner of a few CSN2/MTCD Android head units, I am also the owner of a Huawei HiLink dongle for Internet access on said devices (the kind that appear as an Ethernet device to the Android deck).
I got annoyed with the fact that using my HiLink device I had Internet access, but I had no idea the status of said Internet connection (signal quality, roaming, whether I was online or not, etc.)
So I wrote a simple Android widget that does exactly that. You can download it on the Play Store here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.datademons.hilinkstatuswidget
While I have been a professional programmer for many many years, this is the first time I've written anything for Android, so I'm still dealing with the learning curve, so be patient with me.
Feel free to comment here, or email me at the address on the app listing on the Play Store for bug reports/feature requests. I find it super useful, but I wrote it for me originally; that's to be expected. I hope it can help someone else.

Hi guy, thanks for your work.
Unfortunately the widget does not work with my wingle Huawei e8372, I tested both connection types: wifi and ethernet.
I'm using an head unit CSN2 with android 9, I think the problem could be related to missing authentication, in fact the widget is not asking for the password...
It will be great if you can solve the problem.
Thanks in advance.

I'm also using an Android 9 CSN2 unit to test this, though my device is a 3372.
It shouldn't need authentication for the API stuff.
Open a browser on your device and go to the ip address of the device. Then go to /api/status/monitoring. What does it return? Can you on me the results of the source of that page? (You can blank out your IMEI/phone number/imsi.)

I have a picture of the browser when I open that path, but I'm unable to attach it here... you can reach it at the following address: ibb.co/2q624vC
(I can not attach images or create links because I'm a new user on this forum)
The result of the page is just a number "125002", I think you were expecting something different than this...
Anyway something is changed after the last update installed this morning, now I add the widget to my home screen, I enter the IP address, I push the TEST button and I still get the error "FOUND A NULL"... but after that I push SAVE and the widget works!!!
But now there is another problem: when I park my car the head unit does not switch off but it goes to a deep sleep mode in way to start immediately when the car is switched on. This deep sleep mode kills all background processes and after the re-start all widgets are frozen. It will be useful to have a refresh button on the widget to wake it up.
I don't want to bother you, but it's a long time I'm looking for a similar widget so I will be very happy if this one can work as expected.

Actually, the 125002 is normal .. go to the main page first and *then* go to /api/status/monitoring -- the system expects you to have a session cookie first.
It's interesting it says 'found a null'. That means your device isn't identifying itself. I'll make the next update try to give more useful information.
The latest version that just released to the play store a few hours ago should help with your updating issue. If you click on the widget when your unit wakes up again, it should show you the info page, but it should also force the widget to update too -- give that a try and let me know if it is still an issue.

Ahhh... OK, I lost one step opening the API page directly without passing through the main page first. Tomorrow I will try again and let you know. :good:

I opened the main page first (for my unit is 192.168.0.1) and the API page immediately after (192.168.0.1/api/status/monitoring), the result is changed but is more or less the same, the number is 100002 and there are no other infos.
Anyway the widget works properly and with the last update also the possibility to force a refresh is fine. :good:
FYI this is what I get doing the test from the setup page of the widget: ibb.co/NrCQYPz
(once again you need to copy the link manually because I'm not yet allowed to create links on the forum)
Can I suggest you to add an icon to the status bar? Widget is good, but status bar is visible from everywhere.

That is funny .. I'll make it give a more useful message in the next release.
I might add status bar support at some point, but for the time being, there's only a few people using it, so we'll see.

****** CHANGE LOG ********
___________________________
V1.50- November 20th, 2012
* The issues with the block lists have been fixed up. You can add a block for any number 4 digits or greater and it will be found if the transmission ends with those four digits. Example: if your block is 4567 then the phone number 555-123-4567 would be found. so would 34567,234567,123457,...,5551234567
* The GPS module has been rewritten and is MUCH more efficient and accurate at the same time.
* Geo-fencing has been added so now you can define regions on a map and set rules to alert you as to if the phone entered or left those regions during stated days and times.
Keep in mind that this feature is still beta. Try to give extra ~30 feet extra room just to be sure you don't get false positives. This will do a check on every GPS check-in time to see if you have entered or left defined areas. So accuracy is only going to be as accurate as check-in time periods. In general I recommend people don't ever alter the default 15 minutes however.
* The "discreet communications" option didn't make it into this release because of time constraints, but will be available in the next release. Time-estimates will be posted when available.

Windows Mobile tester, subscribed. Email sent.
This sounds like a GREAT application!
I have a question though... Does your app NEED to have GPS enabled to track down your phone? If it does, what happens if you don't have GPS enabled? Is there a way to enable GPS remotely through the web interface?
Also, does it track the content of the sms messages? Or only the phone number?
Thanks in advance! I'm loving the features on your app already but just wish for a few questions to be answered
The app does not require GPS to be enabled. If no GPS is found, it will triangulate from cell towers. This method is not as accurate however.
I currently do not have a remote "enable gps" command, but I will look into that. It does sound like a great feature to add.
Email sent. Looking forward to a reply.

Thanks chetstriker! This is the one thing that I feel that the other (2) apps I've tried have been missing. I won't name the apps since this is your thread and all but if you DO find a way to enable gps remotely, I think that you'd be ahead of your competition. Best of luck with your app
On the Atrix it force closes when selecting the enable button after entering my password, i tried several times.
On the Captivate (no sim) I was able to enable admin. I then went to the unfairwair website and "locate" showed the phones exact location. I also tried the "turn on ringer" and was given the responce "false" twice.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll have to take a deeper look at what could cause the Attrix to FC. For the Captivate however, It's normal to see "False" on the transaction tab. All commands have a completed status of False until the command has actually launched on the phone. This could take up to 5 minutes.
You would also have to refresh the web page to see the change of status.
<< important note >>>
The "goodies" tab (the one with all the controls.) runs great on all browsers EXCEPT IE7+
typically if you press commands such as "Lock Phone", "Send Message", "Wipe Phone", etc. they should pop-up commands to ask you for more information or confirmation. Internet Explorer version 7+ has javascript alert command and others disabled by default (unlike every other browser.)
You'll have to use any other browser to use these commands, until I re-write that part.
Just sent an email, looking forward to trying out your application!

Supporting more languages is an extremely challenging task as simple translation just won't work. We will try to implement it on a future release.
Once we start working on that, any help would be much appreciated.
the next release will focus on adding other features suggested by users.
- [DONE] Add voice recognition
- [DONE] Remember last calendar used.
- Better support for landscape mode.

Unfortunately reminders are somewhat tricky and we have no access to the default reminder setting of the calendar application.
We will try to think of an elegant solution for future releases, but for now the default reminder is indeed 15 minutes.
For now you may click the Edit button instead of OK and immediately press back (we know, not the best solution..).
Android Pro Quick Event 1.0.2 released!
Here are recent changes:
- Fix: closed when changing orientation.
- Fix: Remembers the last used calendar.
- Feature: Speech recognition added.
my days are off by one
when i try to set up an event the day is off by one i say Friday and it puts Thursdays date in it? anyone else have this issue
griffen97023
Please let me know what is your timezone so I can try to reproduce it.
Edit: well I can see its Pacific.
As far as I can tell the bug is only in the display and only for full day events. Events are placed at the right day after you click OK or Edit.
I'm working on a fix right now and it will be included in the next release.
Thanks.
Thanks! + small bug (?) report
Hey, thanks for the awesome app, I hit that "thanks" button really hard
I think I'll get used to the way of typing in appointments like that quite quickly.
However, I already found something I believe to be a minor bug. Imagine the following scenario: Let's say I want to schedule a meeting at an office of someone called "George Atkinson": "Meeting @ Atkinson's office". No problem so far.
In Germany it is not uncommon for people to have multiple last names connected by a hyphen. Let's say his name is now "George Johnson-Atkinson". Now it would be: "Meeting @ Johnson-Atkinson's office". What happens is that apparently the hyphen changes something in the syntax so that after having typed "Johnson-A", as soon as I type the "t", the Location part will omit what I wrote before and say "tkinson's office" when I'm done typing everything. It probably has something to do with its recognizing the "At" in "Atkinson" as a command (yet, funnily enough, the "t" stays as the first letter in the Location field, which I wouldn't have expected if it was mistaken as part of a command!).
It can get even more confusing. Let's say I don't want it to say "Meeting @ Johnson-Atkinson's office", but rather "Meeting @ George Johnson-Atkinson's office" (i.e. adding the first name; to be more general: another word followed by a space). After having typed "Meeting @ George Johnson-", the hyphen "jumps" to the Title field again, leaving only "George Johnson" in the Location field. Completing the command will result in the Title field saying "Meeting -Atkinson's office" and the Location field saying "George Johnson". EDIT: I just tried it with "Meeting @ Atkinson-Johnson's office" and it gave me "Meeting -Johnson's office" --> Title and "George Atkinson" --> Location. So this "bug" doesn't seem to be associated with the "At". So I guess I accidently found two bugs which I thought to be a single one
I don't know if this is working as intended and only poses a problem with the German "double names". Nonetheless, I did actually and in reality run across this problem I hope my description wasn't too confusing.
Thanks in advance for looking into it!

[APP][2.2+] WakeOnSMS Beta 1.0.8 - Not your average Wake On Lan Client

WakeOnSMS Beta 1.0.8 - Not your average Wake On Lan Client
A simple application to turn on your computer by sending an SMS to the android phone that has this app installed on.
Why you need this?
This is useful when you can't WOL over WAN, or when you don't want to wake anyone at 2am
Faq and Install:
The profile name cannot contain spaces so it will be replaced with _
Make sure that you have a wifi router home and, your computer is connected to the router with UTP cable. (It is not possible to wake up computer that uses wifi lan cards)
Configure your computers bios to enable WOL.
Download the .apk to an adnroid phone that runs 2.2+ and install it.
After install create a new profile and enter the required data.
Send an SMS contaiing the Profile name to the phone that has this apk installed on it.
The wifi handling is implemented into the app. When it is enabled and connected to the router, it will wake up your PC.
If the wifi is turned off, then the app will turn it on and tries to connect to your router.
If the phone can't connect to the router after 5 mins the application stops. When your wifi is turned on but it isn't connected to an access point then the phone might be away from your router so the WOL won't start.
If you don't have a dynamic dns and you can only reach you PC by IP address, then send the get-ip command and you will receive a reply sms with the current WAN (Internet) IP address. These texts won't be visible on the phone.
Click to collapse
Features:
-Easy to use.
-Multi Profiles
-It needs to be configured only the first time.
-Test function to test the WOL feature.
-Wake on lan triggered by a user defined SMS message,
-The sms containing the “profile name” will only be received by the application.
-If the Wifi is turned off, the app will turn it on and when the magic packets have been sent out, it will be turned off.
-Get your WAN (Internet) by SMS
-Simple log that shows the apps activities.
-If you haven't setup a profile but you know the MACADDRESS of your PC then you can turn it on by sending an sms. Example: Wake:MACADDRESS
More features and bug fixes will be implemented soon.
Note: The app needs to be installed on a phone that can access your routers access point. You just need to send the Profile name to that phone.

Hey
Great idea. I have been missing something like this for a long time. Haven't yet had the time to try it out - will next week.
However I would like to offer an idea:
Multiple profiles (so an sms with "WOL1" would wake one computer and "WOL2" would wake another)
alternatively parsing the sms so "WOL 14-76-13-B9-F7-9C" would wake the designated computer
/Jon
I want to give a big thanks for this. I have a 5 yr old you just recently fell in love with Star Wars. I was able to place this app on mine and a spare smartphone I had so my son and I can have Light Saber fights, he is in love with the experience. Thank you again.

Thanks for the reply Jon. Yes I thought of that already, but first Id like to fix all the bugs I can and also to implement the broadcast ip calculation, so the user only needs to enter the MAC address and the magic word
If you run GB on your phone please let me know the result you encounter. On my GF's phone runs MIUI GB last official, and the settings menu always occures when I send her the "Magic word" On other GB roms I haven't see this bug.
Again thanks for your reply

Install the app to a phone that can acces your wifi router (access point). Enter your MAC Address, broadcast IP (That should be 192.168.1.255 if your routers ip is 192.168.1.1) and your WOL port number. That should be 7 or 9. It depends on your routers type. The app acts as a client. When you send the "magic word" to the phone that has this app on it, it will connect to your routers wifi and turn on the comp that has the given MAC. Also configure your comp in the bios to use WOL if it isn't configured yet.
I hope I could help.
Also before the end of the week I will upload the new version that will calculate the broadcast ip and the wol port so you only need to enter the mac and the magic word
PS.: I know my app description is a mess... I will update it soon.

I haven't forgot to add anything. I only committed the manifest end main .jar files. There is no reason to commit unnecessary files -.-

Give the controller a name as you want it to be shown and enter the IP-address of the media box ( currently there is no device discovery )
You can now go out of settings and you should see the controller..
Usage:
After selecting a controller you should see the remote controller layout and in the ActionBar ( right top ) it should show a status indicator.
This indicator shows the status of the connection with the mediabox. It might show as disconnected after network-loss or due to inactivity. In case of disconnection you can either click the status icon or just press a key on the remote.
In case you have setup multiple controllers you can easily switch by opening the left drawer by either pressing the statusbar icon or by doing a left edge swipe.
Additional input:
Clicking the "ABC" button on the remote should open an on-screen keyboard ( be aware that the MediaBox only supports limited input characters like A-Z ).
The volume up/down keys are currently hardcoded to send channel up/down commands.

Was doing my usual "UPC Horizon Android" search and your post just popped up. Very glad to see your project, and hope to be beta testing soon!
Cheers!
Wow, really cool. Was waiting for this for a long time. Hope to be testing soon!
Basically most stuff is working ( buttons, onscreen keyboard etc ) and the biggest thing todo is adding settings.
If I have enough free time I might have an early beta tomorrow and else somewhere in the next few days.
Updated first post with first alpha release.
Be aware that this is an alpha-version and it might contain bugs.
If you come across an issue please be clear and as detailed as possible.
Currently it is build for Android 4.x+, but later versions might receive compatibility to Android 2.x
Thanks, nice work!
Works on my Samsung tab3 10.1 (Android 4.2.2)
After only 10 minutes of testing I didn't encounter any errors.
However, maybe I will stick to my Harmony One, this IR remote controls my HDMI AVR, TV, media player, BR player, Horizon.
Thanks for the effort so far. I'll be giving this build (and future builds) a swing tonight.
This. App. Is. Phenomenal!! And it's absolutely faster than the (new) double sided RC!
You've just created what UPC just can't (or won't?) do for the last year!
Which IP to use??
Hi guys,
Wich IP address did you use in the app?
I used the same address to wich you browse to set up you're network. But unfortunately no response from the box.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

K friends of mine who have UPC should no longer give me access to their WIFI network as their recordings might magically disappear
So people be warned... as you are not able to turn of UPnP on the mediabox ( atleast not that im aware of ) anyone who has access to your WIFI network
is able to remove all your recordings without any form of approval / security.
Source is now available at https://github.com/rogro82/HorizonRemote
I've been using the 1.0 alpha for a week now and I haven't encountered any problems at all.
Only minor 'issue' is that the app doesn't fit my screen entirely (Galaxy SII i9100), the last four buttons (RW, REC, Play/Pause, FW) are only visible after scrolling down. This could be solved by removing the top bar with the controller name and connection status. Perhaps you can highligt the chosen controller in the sidebar and replace the app icon with the connection status of the chosen controller?
Besides the above mentioned I'd say: make it beta or release it already!
Thanks again!
Works like ronseal!
Nice one Rogro82!
All buttons function quicker than the real remote. A sterling job.
I'm guessing you used a packet sniffer, which leads me to the question, do you have an ipad with the 2 UPC apps on there, and do you fancy having a go at replicating one of them?

Thanks for the feedback! Ill think about adding an option to hide the actionbar as mentioned or add an option to choose another layout ( without numeric keys for instance ).

I actually don't have an apple device laying around so I wasnt able to use a packet sniffer.
At first i just did a basic port scan using nmap ( linux ) and figured the opened VNC port wouldnt be there without any use.
Connecting over VNC with most clients failed because they all expect to get a window size larger then 0x0.
Ubuntus build-in Remmina client however didnt loose connection but just presented an empty screen, but I was able to open the info screen on the mediabox by pressing enter and was able to send normal a-z commands in the search screen, but all other media keys werent mapped to any normal keycodes.
So i wrote a small command-line VNC client to scan the entire keycode range to see if I could find all remaining buttons and after a night of scanning and testing I basically figured out the rest of the keys ( which can be found here https://github.com/rogro82/HorizonRemote/blob/master/HorizonRemote/jni/include/keys.hpp ).
I might borrow an ipad one day to check out the official apps, but when it comes down to managing recordings I will not need an actual device as the interface how scheduling etc works is pretty much self-explanatory. Removing and scheduling recordings and other media related tasks are entirely manageable over UPnP and sadly like many other UPnP services without any form of authentication.
So anyone on Ubuntu ( or any other linux distro ) can control his box using tools like gupnp-tools or something similiar and so can anyone else on your WIFI network ( unless you take your own precautions like blocking UPnP ports ).
A recording interface itself wouldnt take too much time to write, but the whole EPG might be a bit more work ( although that data is also accessible over UPnP ).
Currently I am very limited in free time, but as soon as I will have some more time to spend I will take a closer look into the widevine streams to see if there is anything blocking support on Android.

You can turn UPnP of using the advanced/options tap (web interface) on Horizon Box
I installed the app earlier today and I'm pleasantly surprised about it's stability for an alpha version. But mostly blown away by the speed, like others said before you have managed to do what UPC haven't been able to until now.

Huawei community forums...how to file bugs on Huawei phones?

I've been trying to log into Huawei's community forums for a while, but no matter what I try, it results in an error page. It's the most extraordinarily frustrating experience. I wonder if anyone else has any tips to getting logged in.
My main reason for wanting to log in, apart from having a general look for tips, etc, is to find out how to inform them of a bug in their OS. Does anyone have any recommendations for how best to do that?
In fact, I often log in the community forum as my mobile phone is a Huawei device. I would like to help you report the bug.
You may post your bug description here. You can write in English or in Chinese.
If it is in English, I will translate it by myself before submit to the forum .

Well, that's very civilised of you. I'll write in English, since that's the only language I know
Actually, I have three bugs - well, I think they're bugs, except, perhaps, for the first one.
1. This one isn't really a bug, but I bet the people on the Huawei forums can help.
FYI, I use a sim card from CMLink - SIM #1 [1], which piggy back off EE in the UK, and CMCC in China, and provide useful roaming plans for use between the two countries. They only provide data plans limited by the month, and I have signed up for their 22GB plan. To track usage, I have a P10 and have been trying to set it up to automatically calibrate the data usage measure on a daily basis. I think it does this by sending an SMS containing simply 'Check' to CMCC's service number '10086', and extracts the data from the response (not 100% sure about that, but hey). There seems to be a 'calibrate' button in the settings to do this manually (under the usage graph), but when I try I get the message 'Incorrect network provider. Reselect and try again.' I'd really like to get this going.
2. Related to above, I've set the setting to show the usage under the notifications when you drag down from the top of the screen. I've configured my plan information - ie 22GB per month, and starts on the 17th of each month. However, while the 'Today' seems to increase appropriately, the 'Left' is stuck at the maximum. I imagine the 'Total' is supposed to stay at 22GB. I expect the 'Left' to go down as I use it throughout the month.
3. This one is unrelated to above. If I open a browser and go to my web mail site, there is an option on the menu to 'Add to Home screen'. As expected, when I select that option, it does add an icon to the homescreen. Since it is something I want on every page of the homescreen, I drag that icon onto the row on the bottom of the screen that is shown on every page. I do that for a couple of web pages - my email and my calendar. At this point, it all works swimmingly. However, if I reboot the phone, then those icons seem to be moved back onto the homescreen, and also are 'greyed out' and placed under the clocks (the clock widget) I have placed there. So, that's not 'expected'.
What do you think?
Max.

What's your question about logging into that forum?
But as I found, it seems a community forum in Chinese. Almost all posts there are in Chinese. So, will you get any effective response even if you can log in it?
Maybe it's better to contact a local Huawei customer service center in order to get some helps. Do you think so?

Your three question are really confused and difficult to understand for me as I never used a CMLink sim card.
But I will try my best to get to know your situations and help you as more as I can.
First, let's clarify your 3rd question.
On my Huawei phone, there are at most 5 icons on the row on the bottom of the screen that is shown on every page. Every icon here for apps on my device works fine even if I reboot my device. So, is it a defect of the couple of web pages - email and calendar?
Try to drag an icon of another app or widget there. Check if it will work well, please.
> I never used a CMLink sim card
I don't think there's anything special about the CMLink, except that it works in either country pretty much the same as the other. It is the same as any other SIM card with a monthly limited data plan. So, you could consider that it is the same as a Chinese SIM card, I suppose.
> So, is it a defect of the couple of web pages - email and calendar?
Well, I guess I don't know exactly what the problem is, of course. My impression is that they hadn't considered this use-case much at all - I notice the Huawei browser doesn't have this 'add to homescreen' functionality at all.
However, you prompted me to experiment a bit more, and it doesn't happen with all web pages. Previously, I had my email and calendar on there, and they both were moved back onto the homescreen underneath other icons/widgets and greyed out (and didn't actually work to launch the web pages). However, now, the calendar page does seem to stay on there, and works when I click it. I also have tried both Chrome and Brave, and they both seem to show the same problem. I can't really see how it could be a web page problem, since nothing is being launched. I suppose it could be a web *manifest* problem, since that is where the icons usually come from...though looking in chrome devtools, I see that it has no manifest, and so the icons must be taken from the <meta> in <head>. The calendar, which does seem to be staying on the quick launch bar, also doesn't have a manifest file - so not that then.
It's pretty easy to reproduce though:
1. open your browser (chrome, probably) on https://www.fastmail.fm/
2. click on the menu and select 'Add to homescreen'
3. 'Add' on the dialog
4. 'ADD on the next dialog
5. go to the homescreen and locate the shortcut
6. drag and drop it onto the quick launch bar.
7. restart
Well, that's frustrating - I was writing those down as I did them, and when I restarted, it looked fine :/ I wonder if it makes any difference which position the icons are in on...ah, yeah, it looks like it is more reproducible if the shortcut is the left-most. Arghh. This time I lost a *native* app I had on there too - WeChat of all things - you'd imagine they'd make sure that works fine. Actually, it wasn't the WeChat app I had on there, but a shortcut to one of the contacts - you can add a wechat contact from the menu on their item in the wechat contacts list - 'Add to Desktop' it is in English. Hrm I notice that, while the web page shortcuts get moved back onto the homescreen, the WeChat contact shortcut is just gone....and I can't even add it again from WeChat - it says it is, but nothing appears :/
Gosh, it's really a bit of a mess. Perhaps it's too broken and inconsistent to even bother filing any bug. I'm tempted to apply for a job there to try and help, but in any case, I can't see too many Westerners being happy with such issues I suppose Chinese people just don't do this sort of thing.

Well, the question is where I can get help with logging in - but, if it is all in Chinese, I would modify my question to be: where can I find forums that are in English, and corresponding community support? Since there is a huge market for English speakers, I imagine they have somewhere for us to learn how to use it, and ask questions and report problems, etc?

Yes, your requirement is very reasonable.
When I posted some questions about mobile phone usage here, there would be someone would replied to my thread and tried to get more detailed info to help me. They said they were the Huawei official staff.
I will post a thread about "where for you to ask questions and report problems in English" for you soon.
On the other hand, you can access the forum either via web application (mobile web as well as computer web) or via an official app. You can also try the app. If you need it and can not find the apk, I will show you the link.

Thanks. I look forward to finding out if there is a forum for English language users somewhere. I do kind of feel like they could spend more attention to this requirement, unless, of course, I'm just not looking hard enough. I remember when I was using a ZTE phone - they were very popular due to having front-facing speakers, and so had a pretty good US based forum and it was very useful. [Side note - I wish Huawei would produce a phone with front-facing speakers].
I don't think an app will get me very far...I probably have it on my phone already - I see one called 'HiCare', for example, and there's the top line on the settings. It's all very unfamiliar and things so often don't seem to quite work as expected. I kind of wish the Huawei stores had 'help' sessions like they do (or did anyway) in Apple stores.

I tried Firefox Focus just now.
When I opened a simple web page, then selected 'Add to Home screen' from the menu, entered some words for the icon title, tap 'Add' at last.
But it was so strange that then I couldn't find this icon on the home screen at all. It must be a bug of Huawei EMUI system. The QC engineers should ignore this use case.
Btw, it's time to home for me. I will try to help you tomorrow. Would you like to support my apps available on Google Play? Thanks in advance.

Ah, I hit this too. I suspect it is simply that you need to grant the app permissions to add to homescreen in the phone's settings in the Apps->permissions...or somewhere like that.
It's a bit odd that they don't get this automatically...I never had this issue with Google Android phones.

You are right. I granted the app permission 'add to homescreen' to Firefox Focus, and then tried the feature again.
The function works well. Even after rebooting, the icon is still there on the row on the bottom of the screen that is shown on every page. So, I misunderstood that feature.

Cool. It seems like it might be working better for you than for me. I've not tried firefox yet, but chrome and brave both seem to lose any shortcuts on the quick launch bar, but not always. It is also quite curious what has happened to the shortcut from wechat...since that's a native android app :/
Perhaps you're on a more recent Android/EMUI version? What kind of phone are you using?
TBH, I'm seriously considering the P30 Pro 5G when I get back to the UK, and this is sort of a test run with a hand-me-down phone which I presume is very similar in UI/UX, so it is all 'influencing' my decision.

I posted a thread in that forum for you yesterday. https://club.huawei.com/thread-21560821-1-1.html
But till now, I have not gotten any response. So, I sent a PM to the ADMIN just now.
You may try to log in the web app or the native app for the community forum. There you might post a thread in English as your device language is English. Have a try, please. Good luck to you.

I suggest you post your issues on the Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Huawei/ . Good luck to you.
