OP8 Says it's on 5G in the status bar, but is actually on LTE - OnePlus 8 Questions & Answers

So i was doing some speedtests to compare the 5G and LTE speeds at my house. I did this by switching the preferred network setting in settings to enable/disable 5g, and confirmed the icon in the status bar changed.
After a few tests switching 5g on and off in the network settings where the speeds were nearly identical...I checked the band the phone was using in Network Signal pro. Even though the status bar read 5g, the app confirmed I was still on LTE. I guess the tower by my house only has LTE, but the bigger issue here is that the phone never switches the indicator between 5G and LTE.
What gives? Is this normal behavior? I know it's been on 5g before, I was out somewhere else and got sweet speeds and even confirmed the band in the same app. Seems like the icon is useless if it doesn't actually tell me if it's using 5G or LTE.

Currently 5G is running in NSA ( non stand alone) meaning it has to connect to LTE to connect to 5G. Most apps will report the LTE information and not the NR information. You can use cell mapper and look for 5G State and if it says connected you're on 5G. It won't tell you what NR band your phone is on though. Only way in this phone to find out what 5G band your on is by using Network Signal Guru app (but you need root and license for it to show NR info).

I don't have any specific links. Just a lot of researching 5G lead to knowing that. I've been following 5G news and information before networks even started deploying it, so I've probably read too many articles about 5G at this point lol. An interesting thing is that all US carriers are planning on switching to stand alone 5G later this year. Once that happens, 5G will no longer have to connect with LTE as well which should fix the issue of the fake 5G icon. I will link 1 article that talks a little about the networks using NSA currently and how the 5G icon is currently set to display in Android (which can include not actually being on 5G). The one article is here. So easiest way to know for sure is cell mapper and 5G state: connected or get the beta version of Network Signal Guru (although you have to be rooted for that app).

Very interesting...the fun of being an early adopter. Thanks for the answer!

I have the tmo op 8 was pretty fast then tmo added two more bands and the speed is really good now. I read that they are going to have 5G LTE which will be even faster.

[Q] Maximum connection speed = 3G? Why?

Hello,
I've just followed the procedure explained in this thread LINK in order to enable the network sharing option on my Samsung Omnia 7, but now there's something a bit strange.
Also, I want to thank the author of that procedure (can't post in his thread because of the limitations of my new account).
If i tap the "Cellular network" tab in the phone settings now I see a new selection tab named "Maximum connection speed", wich I haven't got before doing the procedure:

}
(before the update I only had got - at this height of the tab - Roaming options and Network selection...no trace of that "Maximum connection speed")
If i tap the selection box i can choose from 2 options: E (edge) and 3G.
I don't see H (hsdpa) option and now 3G is the chosen option.
If i use my connection i see the 3G icon at the top of the screen become H, as always, but I'm confused and I don't know if the navigation speed is the same as before...
Is that normal? How can I test my speed?
By the way I made a backup, so I can restore my phone if it's needed!
3G is HSDPA (in some countries 3.5G/HSDPA+). 3G is only the network used for texting and video/calling, whereas mobile internet is connected through the form of HSDPA via 3G network. It's like 2G/EDGE and 4G/LTE.
I thought that selection would have affected the navigation speed, but not in this case.
Thank you!

Yes, it's a Samsung related thing.
They chose to use 3G+ instead of H to refer at HDSPA...meh.
By the way, using the "Advanced Configuration" homebrew I was able to change that weird icon from 3G+ to the classic H.
Ps. Magus, sei tu? XD
A few questions asked here:
Why did this option appear?
It's actually supposed to be there, but some OEMs or mobile operators hide it by default. Many homebrew tweaks un-hide it (it's just a single registry value).
What does it do?
It lets you force the phone to use 2G (including EDGE) instead of 3G (including HSPDA). There are two reasons you might do this: to save battery (3G is a battery hog, relatively speaking) or because you have a very marginal 3G signal but a strong 2G one and therefore actually get a better connection if you force the phone to use 2G.
How can I test my speed?
There are a number of ways. The marketplace has several apps for bandwidth testing (though some provide wildly inaccurate results). You can also tether your laptop to the phone (using either the USB cable and a small tweak, or using the built-in Internet Sharing feature over WiFi) and then use a standard bandwidth test site like http://speedtest.net (which uses Flash and is therefore not usable in the phone's browser).
Hope that helps!

[Q] Totaly lose 3G mobile data connection

The issue cames at Tuesday or maybe Wednesday(not very sure), the 3G(WCDMA) connection lost, I've checked APN, mobile data switch, data roaming, get nothing. Before that it works perfectly. It just happened.

As u may see, at *#*#4636#*#*, UMTS actived, and all my sms, calls are working fine too, but GPRS was always "Disconnected". even when I insert another 3G sim from my friend, and of course I've tried my sim on others phone, 3g works fine. ThenI had try my old 2G sim card, it works fine too(both mobile data and sms), it feels like just 3G network has been isolated on my phone, no sent no received. I've set the "WCDMA only" or "WCDMA preferred", nothing changed.
I've factory reset or wipe everything or update to 4.4.2 or downgrade to 4.4.0 several times, nothing changed, won't get "3G" or "H+" next signal bar.
I've found somebody in China has these issue, I'm in China too
:crying::crying::crying::crying:
Model: LGD820 White 32GB(US)
That shows you are on China Unicom but do they support 2G only? When you switch to that (not using 4636, just normal Mobile Networks switcher) does it show up with EDGE connection?
Nope, no "E" icon appear too, but with my another old sim, "E" Edge works fine, I guess my new sim card could only access network through 3G
I got "China Unicom was upgrade their base station for 4G network build these days" from one of my friends works in China Unicom, so this was just the reason of lost of 3G. And these was not the only, LG G2 (Ver. HongKong) got the same issue in some city of Hunan China.
But as I know most phone(ver. US or UK or Pacific Asia) had no issue like this.
So is there anyone could offering me some advice to conquer this issue? About baseband? Anyway could lemme capture the signal or mobile data handshake packet or something like this?
i m also in Hunan China,and my D820 no 3G,similar with you.
me too in us
sprint 3g in US (richmond va) happens to me all the time, especially when im at work, and it seems to do it under heavy data load... twitter, facebook, etc

Has your friend said when this will be fixed? I am in Changsha, Hunan and I just got back here from the states two days ago. When I landed in Beijing...great data signals. The I landed back in Changsha...no data. Just my luck that I get pretty much the only phone that doesn't work in my city. Any help is appreciated. Thanks for this post to BTW since it seems everyone else is arguing with me. I just want to know when this will be returned back to normal in Hunan or any way to fix this issue?
In my Phone N5 3g is working very will..
As I known from several Chinese forum it has already been fixed in Changsha (by China unicom of course ), but I'm in zhuzhou (a city next to Changsha ). Here's some ways I discovered may works for u.
Turn the mobile data on/set apn of course, get in the phone information page through the info code (in case u dunno, dial *#*#4636#*#* at your dial pad page ). Switch the preferred network type to any type other than GSM only, let the signals lost, then switch back to GSM only, wait a while(10 sec). Did the E or G icons appeared next to your signal bars?
Yes? Congress dude, u found a working station, wait a while then switch back to WCDMA prefer or WCDMA only whatever u like. H or H+ would came out!!!!! And then walk around, now u can go anywhere u want.
If it's not came out then f*#king the station cuz it's just the one which "block" your phone (not your phone issue I promise, I bought the second Nexus 5 because I THOUGHT IT'S MY F#*KING PHONE WITH F*#KING ISSUES !!!!!!!!!!!!). Now go somewhere else and try again to find the "right " station.
PS: As long as u get online & never switch off the data then u could be online like 12 hours wherever u are (in service area of course )even roaming to "blocking station" till carrier reset u (regularly )
PSPS :I've found like 7 working station in zhuzhou, one of them was available to connected 17 floors above where I'm working. It sucks!!!
If u willing to chat pm me with your hangouts or something u wanna to say cuz it will notification on my phone
I fogot to click on reply u, lemme try again......... Type so much on phone was so damn hard working

When I am in some places, applications such as facebook, instagram, telegram do not work, but if I move an inch they start to work again. All this when I use the 4g / 4g + / 3g
I also noticed a certain slowness in the data connection, my previous mobile phone a mi 9 lite is much better performing. I hope it is just a youth problem and that with a modem update it is solved.

Can you people post speedtests or something?
Signal is maxed out where I live and speed is also fine 50mbps down and up
Me too, Im experiencing slow data connections even when outside. Tried to test the speed using ookla speed test and it shows less than 1mbps download compared to my oppo A37f LTE which shows 10mbps.
same me. Facebook , Instagram ,chrome not load page but my speed internet 89Mbps Dev. please fix firmware
I have the same issue. Mobile data slowing down very often or stuck and do not loading anything. Turning on and turning off flying mode solve problem for a while.
Well I was camping, and there's almost no signal so data keeps changing from 4g+ to 3g+ to E, etc... THIS IS NORMAL
BUT
When it's on 3G+ there's no connection what so ever, I get 1-2 bars of signal and I'm always not connected to the internet, this isn't a problem with xiaomi: redmi 8, note4, a1 and other brands either

Isn't? I have full signal and high speed and after second my signal drops to 2-3 bars. Then internet doesnt work at all but when I test connection with smartphone diagnostic, it says that connection works fine. When I test connection speed, there is like 1-20 Mb/s loading and almost 0 Mb/s uploading. When I turn airplane mode on and off, then connection works again with high speed and no problems for a while. With Galaxy S7 edge and ROG 2, there is no problem at all, even when I have 1 bar of signal. It looks like POCO X3 losing uploading randomly so you cant send request to open anything.
6-12 download. In countryside no upload at all almost. Whit 3G sometimes. very bad connection when gaming on desktop. Glitchy OS too. Had to reset the phone many times. Connects to mobile data auto whit no permission granted.
I have the same problem too. the data connection is very slow compare to my extra phone. The ping/latency is too high.
4G
same problem too and when i
ping to google it unstable from
request time out
To 6000+ ms
and Regular 60-100 ms
but overall it is unusable
it reused when used 3g but not great ether
I have same problem with my poco X3 do rur internet on LTE+(4g) doesnt worki but LTE+ icon on right top corner is still visible, when i turn phone upside down IT worki again , strange issue
The antennae on the X3 are pretty bad
Try Set network preferred to Lte/umts auto on testing menu. *#*#4636#*#* default with Td-scdma,
FYI, the setting is under "Testing | Phone Information [1 | 2]".
FTR, mine was was already set to "LTE/TDSCDMA/UMTS" under stock ROM v12.0.3.0 (QJGEUXM) with no SIMs.
.
Hi,
same problem with my POCO X3. Upload is very low. With another old phone is better!
Someone has a solution? Is this a know issue?
Thanks
there are clearly a problem in upload in data in this device i made a lot of tests and it showed
1- in out door with good signal it is good
2- in indoor with good signal the download is good the upload is weak
3- in indoor with average signal the download still good but the upload is very poor
and affecting in the overall performance

next you want to tap on LTE button and the next screen will occur
first we will tap on VIEW
make sure you know your MSL code for a later step
(BOOST Mobile normally has aa code of 000000 for their device for easy programming)
(View Screen)
the next step you tap on "Bands Priority" and get ready to change some values.
your values for each band should look like this below (tested on 2 devices and no issues so far)
thats it for that part of our journey. now we have to enable other band functions in the LTE Edit menu.
close that window and start another instance of the ussd code we used earlier and this time when we tap on LTE also tap on Edit (not view).
the next screen should look just like this
now type in your msl code
*again if you have boost mobile it will more than likely be 000000*
000000
the next screen you want to have has a bunch of Upload and Download enablers. Next 2 pictures.
you will want everything enabled that i have above. (pretty much all but 2)
the 2 left not enabled are
CA DL 26A-41A Enabled = off
and
CA DL 38C Enabled = off
they do not stay on for long if you turn them on.
Finally use this USSD dialer code
*#*#4636#*#*
then tap on Phone Information
next you will get the screen below and we aer going to change 1 thing
tap on "Set Preferred Network Type"
you will want to change the type to LTE/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA(PRL)
afte that your finale step is to restart your device. and Voila you should have better data speed by up to 100mbps+/- a second.
Enjoy
donate to me if you like on paypal

Why does this work, and would it also work the same for the boost 5g model?
EDIT: I also want to add, it's probably a good idea to take a screenshot of your existing values before changing them if you need to switch them back.
It works because it puts that natural bands for boost mobile in the order to receive and send data first. They are off with a 0 by default. Which I thought was weird . I only added bands 25,26 and 41 to the queue operating first to capture packets from a native source tower. The UL and DL options enable those frequencies to use the signal sent and received. I enabled all I could by default so I can capture more packets over the network with more possible instances.
As for if it will work on the 5g. I am going to test that tonight and will post in the 5g forum. I do not know because I haven't had much experience besides reading at the moment.
I did the changes on my 5G, service still works, however no noticeable difference in coverage or speed, I did have to set a few to 0 that were enabled before

I probably wouldn't have done that because they're are 5g bands that were enabled like 71 and 12. Try adding the missing bands into the queue gradually and watching for cell tower switchover in phone information. So I would suggest a revert and slowly test each feature/band that you change. Don't go full out because it may cause a conflict with 5g capabilities.
Here is the original band queue for the 5g variant boost mobile. (So you got em in case)
Band 1 is marked as 0.
If you do decide to run with this then let me know how your testing goes and get over to the moto g stylus 5g forum and post there. Wouldn't mind the help testing on 5g as I only have 1 right now. DM/PM me with updates if you can.

Question Android 12 Disable 5G

Is it possible to disable 5G on the Galaxy S21+ on Android 12 & One UI 4.0? I've searched through the Android 11 method of Settings>Connections>Mobile Networks> Network Mode but apparently that has been removed all together. I couldn't find it in Dev Options either.
Could it be hidden somewhere else?
Does anyone know the ADB command?

To anyone else wondering how to do this, I ended up using an app called Samsung Band Selection to remove the use of the 5G band.
@USAMac , I have used the Samsung Band selector for some other purpose, can you detail how to remove the use of the 5G Band.
Would appreciate your time.

I wanted to share with you that I ended up switching my connection type to GSM/WCDMA/LTE because in my area, even LTE is not always present. I've personally found this to be a lot more flexible in service and took away the occasional G I would see next to my signal bars. Hope this helps!

I was referring to the removal of Network Mode
There's another app called Network Mode Samsung that gives greater details on what the bands mean:
GSM ALL -> 2G GSM only (GPRS/EDGE)
WCDMA ALL -> 3G WCDMA only (UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA/HSPA+)
LTE ALL -> 4G LTE only
GSM/WCDMA -> 2G / 3G only
WCDMA/LTE -> 3G / 4G LTE only
Band Selection Mode -> Manually choose 2G/3G/4G Bands
I intentionally ordered a 4G model, but they sent me a 5G model samsung flagship. It isn't what I ordered. However, what happened was I thought I was using a safe 4G phone but after holding it a minute or two I started getting this splitting headache, and I don't get headaches. Then I looked at the About phone section and discovered they sent me a 5G model! That's not a placebo effect folks. I didn't know I was using a 5G phone until AFTER I got the symptoms - headache, fatigue, foggy brain, head pressure. All symptoms of 5G radiation. I never had any of these symptoms before.
Well this phone is going back immediately. But I did take the opportunity to test the app listed.
I installed the Samsung Band Selector app and it does allow to switch the bands. However, I'm not sure if it actually does disable 5G, I was trying to figure out a way. I didn't add in a sim card, so Signal Spy didn't work. Maybe I'll add a sim card just to check it.
But anytime I took off airplane mode the headache gets worse, in fact I am keeping this phone away from me, I don't want the 5G phone anywhere near me, I'm waiting on a return label.
