If you are new to Motorola this will be good news, you will be able to unlock your bootloader day one if you have the pure edition (maybe even the style will be available but this would depend on your carrier). The process is almost identical to the HTC unlock bootloader method.
Few things to note:
-This will probably void your warranty. User @nikeman513 has reported his warranty says void on the Motorola website after unlocking his bootloader. But Motorola says it was a mistake and it will not void your bootloader. Confusing but it looks like we can unlock without losing warranty. Still unlock at your risk
-This has been tested by @Aftashok and others and confirmed to work on the Pure Edition (Style has not been tested).
-Lastly I am not responsible for any issues you may find during the process, this is informational only and do it at your own risk.
NOTE: Keep in mind this will factory wipe your phone and you will have to set it up again.
Before you start go into settings ->about phone -> software info and rapid click the build number until you enable developer options. After that go into developer options and enable "oem unlock". Now you are ready to continue.
1. Install Motorola Driver
2. Download ADB (or google it if you want the pure tool and not a toolkit)
3. Power off your device (keep it unplugged from the PC at this point)
4. Power device back on while holding volume down and the power button for 5 seconds
5. Once you see the bootloader screen plug in your device to the PC
6. Navigate to the location where your ADB is installed in file explorer and hold the shift key and right click. Select "Open command window here"
7. Type "fastboot oem get_unlock_data" in command prompt
8. Copy the code that is shown and paste it in notepad (I always right click on the top of the window and click Edit->Mark then highlight the code and right click on the top again and do Edit->copy)
9. Go to Motorla's page and login/create an account.
10. Paste code and click "Can my device be unlocked"
11. Agree to terms and click "Request Unlock Key" this will send you an email
12. Once you get the email with your unlock code paste the following in command prompt "fastboot oem unlock YOURKEY" (no "'s and replace YOURKEY with the key they emailed you)
13. Now you have an unlocked bootloader and are ready to flash a custom recovery when it is ready.
(this is simply informative, this process is tried and true and the method Motorola set up for an unlock, I take no credit for any of this)

This is for the bootloader which is different than a carrier unlock.
Out of the box you will be able to activate this phone on any carrier.
If you wish to flash kernels, recoveries, etc then an unlocked bootloader is required.

It has to be, the play and the G are unlockable there is no logical reason why this pure edition wont be.
That really depends. Sometimes you can do this and have no issues relocking. Assuming there isn't a counter and you can at least get the phone to power up. If they have some kind of counter then yes, its probably a bad idea.
Frankly I don't care for such insurance plans. Unless you're super accident prone. I've cracked exactly one screen in all the devices I've had and it was still usable. Hell its still a backup phone if my current one goes tits up. Then again I'm also not afraid to get in there and replace a screen on my own making $75 up front much less attractive. Would take two breaks to pay for itself. Buddy of mine dropped his S6 the day he got it while sitting on the crapper at best buy. Screen went buh bye. YMMV

Did you order it from motorola directly? Was it unlocked? You may want to head over to the moto g forums for assistance. I will remove that note from the OP if it does not work but the Moto X Play works for sure. This pure edition should work and we will confirm it in a couple of days as the devices arrive.

Yes, unlocked direct from Moto Maker. I can check over in the forums but when I pasted the output into Moto's site it said that bootloader unlocking was not supported on the device.

So I wonder if it'll be the same as unlocked a Nexus? Just enable OEM Unlock in Developer Settings and fastboot oem unlock.
Either way mine will be unlocked the day it arrives!

Yeah same with HTC they say they "may" void your warranty but you still have a chance for them to service your device if needed. I'm not worried. Flash power is worth it
Peace be upon everybody, and good morning/evening
Last night I remained using my PC for a whopping 9 hours of work to figure out how to unlock my E6633 bootloader - and I finally figured it out.
The whole process was bumpy and the Sony Mobile Developers tutorial didn't wholly work out, but it had some vital info for the process. I had to unlock the boot loader using the Flashtool (thankfully), and I had some lack of luck at the beginning, which involved a journey to find the lost driver for my Z5, and to install it in the Device Manager (took some time). And then I took a "detour", since facing another roadblock, by creating a folder in C:\Users\<User>\.flashTool\registeredDevices named by my devices code (that appears when you enter adb devices in cmd), then inside of that folder I've created a .txt named ulcode.txt which contains the serial code provided by Sony Mobile to unlock your boot loader. And I've gotta tell you, it was all a pain in the bass.
More frustratingly, this whole procedure has resulted in zero luck with rooting the goddamn device (thanks Sony), and now I'm stuck with an unrooted bootloader-unlocked device . I'm sure this requires taking another detour. I've failed in every way I know to flash the modified stock kernel for some reason. I've tried cmd to flash the kernel and it comes back with FAILED <Remote: command not allowed>. I've also tried Flashtool to root it directly, and it turned out to be non-working as well.
Now, I'm not going to complain about this whole situation, even though I'm recalling how easy rooting my good old Galaxy S3 was. I'm now looking for a solution for that last tiny bit of the puzzle, and I'm sure there are other fellow members who are facing the same hitch.

Is oem unlocking ticked? It sounds like your bootloader is still locked.
All I did to unlock mine was type the command Sony provided with the unlock code and unlocked it with fastboot, took maybe 10 seconds?

After unlocking the bootloader does the phone reset to factory settings? Just to make sure that you succeed unlocking.
Go to developer options and check if oem unlock is ticked
This difference in rooting experience that the OP had with the GS3 and now with the Z5 raises a question in my mind. Is the modding community more focused on popular devices? This is often a deal breaker for some people. If the 6P or the GS6 gets more ROMs and mods and faster root exploits than the Z5, then I myself would prefer those devices over the Z5.

It is indeed ticked and I'm positive that the bootloader is unlocked.
Yes I tried the easy way of doing it with cmd but it just didn't work out. Kept returning with FAILED <Remote: command did not succeed> and that's why I resorted to the other way of creating those files in the flashtool folders (as explained in the OP).

I went through the steps in that thread and without any problems until the part with
Code:
fastboot –i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
I have checked the recognition of my device by entering fastboot devices and it recognized my device successfully.
The X's above being the code provided by Sony, the cmd window (of minimal adb and fastboot) returned with
Code:
FAILED (remote: Command did not succeed)
Although, the step prior to this one which is to unlock the bootloader using Flashtool has succeeded.
It's really mind-boggling...
As far as i know that unlocking bootloader will reset ur phone to factory settings.
And not sure but i think you need to remove a number from the code sony sent to you.

If it says bootloader unlock allowed :YES you can unlock it, if it says NO u can't unlock it.
If it says rooted or unlocked, you've successfully unlocked it already.
UM, I have E6633 and everything works fine... I used flashtool to unlock bootloader.

Yes you cannot unlock bootloader.
I think you have branded phone,locked by carrier.

Carrier lock, unfortunately as far as I know since the very first Z series impossible to unlock unless u contact the carrier and they unlock it for u.
Keep in mind that they might charge u for that.

Thank you all, guys! I tried everything you told me but guess what! Nothing worked unfortunately...
I've just purchased the phone and the massive amount of bloatware, lack of adaway and the useless bixby button instantly made me want to root. However I have a couple of issues.
First off, I don't even know if my bootloader is unlocked. I tried the phone dial technique and the fastboot technique and both of them did nothing. I also tried looking in the devs option for a "oem unlock" option, but it appears to be missing from my device. So, how do I check if my bootloader is unlocked?
Second off, I have the snapdragon variant, which means no twrp for me for now. However I did see that cf-auto-root supports my device, so that's some good news. I haven't been in touch with the android community for quite a while now, but I did see that a better (apparently), open-source alternative exist to supersu : Magisk (I'm particularly interested in the "hide root" feature). Can I install Magisk even after rooting with cf_auto_root (which installs supersu iirc)?

I may be wrong, but I think it is supported.
It requires an unlocked bootloader or a phone capable of accepting fastboot oem unlock / fastboot flashing unlock. I wish I were wrong, trust me..

I would do a little reading here as this has been discussed numerous times. Unfortunately, you need an unlocked bootloader to use any of the root tools out there. All of these sites have a disclaimer noted regarding not working with a locked bootloader. So sit back and grab a beer...may be a while until we see root...if at all.

That was the command to unlock the bootloader, to see if it's unlocked you can try this:
Step 1 : Open your device’s dialer (App where you enter telephone numbers to call someone).
Step 2 : Dial the below code, it will automatically open a new windows. (if it doesn’t opens anything then use the second method).
1. *#*#7378423#*#*
Step 3 : Now in that window go to Service Info >> Configuration, and see if there is :
1. Bootloader unlock allowed - Yes >> This means that your Bootloader is Locked
2. Bootloader Unlocked - Yes >> This means that your Bootloader is unlocked
If this doesn't work you can try this:
Step 1 : Download and install adb & fastboot package & drivers in your system (Google it for your device).
Step 2 : After successful installation of adb & fastboot, connect your device to your PC via USB cable in fastboot mode.
Step 3 : Now open the folder where your adb & fastboot package is extracted, press Shift key on your keyboard and right click in the folder and select “Open command prompt here“.
Step 4 : It will open a Command Prompt window.
Step 5 : Type the following command to check if the device was detected in fastboot mode.
fastboot devices
Step 6 : if you don’t get device it or anything it means that the drivers weren’t correctly installed or the device wasn’t connected properly, if this happens try reinstalling your drivers.
Step 7 : Next run the following command to check the status of your device’s bootloader.
fastboot oem device-info

And for select HTC devices with Android Lollipop and all devices that receive Marshmallow, you will need to first manually enable OEM unlocking in Developer options in order to allow the bootloader to be unlocked and proceed with the next steps. To access the OEM unlocking setting on your device, open the Developer options in the system Settings.

I just received my Flip3 (SM-F711U1) and would like to unlock my bootloader. However developer options is missing the OEM Unlock option. It's completely missing not just grayed out. I read a few articles about needed to change the system date but none of those guides changed anything. Can someone help?
Also, I attempted to call *#*#7378423*#*# to double checked that it wasn't already unlocked and I got a popup saying "Unabled to process the request."

As far as I'm aware samsung devices don't support fastboot. I did attempt to connect it in case I was wrong but was not able to get fastboot to recognize the device.

You can try directly unlock without ticking the oem unlock. By boot into download mode. The other thing is your device or carrier or country wont allow your flip 3 to be unlock. There last step you can try is clean flash via odin with your latest firmware.

I can get into download mode fine but don't know how to use that to unlock directly. Can you give more details?
I tried a clean flach with my latest firmware but it didn't change anything.
It's a US carrier unlocked version I bought directly from Samsung. CSC of XAA. Currently using a T-Mobile SIM.

If you had them enabled on your last phone and you restored from your Google backup, developer options will be enabled. Has happened on all of my phones since Android 9

My option is missing as well but I have the T-Mobile model that I have sim unlocked. As far as I knew all us models of Samsung phones did not support bootloader unlocking

If you can boot into download mode there is an instruction just press vol up button and it will prompt do you want to unlock bootloader mine is like that. Im not sure yours since mine is korea version.

They support bootloader unlock. samsung dont support using fastboot unlock or command at all
if you're in North America, Canada etc Qualcomm chips there do not support bootloader unlocking, at least the Samsung one's don't, not sure about other OEMs.

I recently read this article on XDA about unlocking the boot loader on the Fold 3 which results in Samsung disabling the camera (WTH?), Is this a thing on the Flip3 too?
My device is rooted. I have always been able to find the OEM unlock option under developer options without any constraints.
My camera is NOT affected. I can still use it without any issues.
I have an European device (SM-F711B).
Hope this helps some of you to track down whether this is a location or carrier based problem.

Also, I attempted to call *#*#7378423*#*# to double checked that it wasn't already unlocked and I got a popup saying "Unabled to process the request."
