I've an oddly specific question: if you search for a location, say a 7-eleven, using the Bing app or Bing in the browser, and you hit the directions button - what navigation app opens, Here WeGo?
Ive just tested it out, So it gives you a web based version of google maps, However you can always do the search in here we go for the 7 eleven, Or you can use google maps but the functions dont all work, Im actually loving here we go, Its clean and super easy to use!

Thanks for testing that out for me. I figured it'd open a web version of Google Maps because that's what happens on other Androids.
I like HERE WeGo too. I'm looking into using Tasker to open Google Maps links in HERE WeGo. But Tasker is kinda complicated for newbies.

^ this app opens Google Map links in HERE. Not the nicest implementation, but it works.

Yep, it does. But you've got to build the task. And Tasker is hard for newbies.
Send to Navigation pretty much does the same thing.

So after reading through some threads there is a few that mentioned that 'CAR HOME' or 'Google Navigation' is not part of the Captivate. Other rumours also speculate that once you open google maps and click on 'Navigate' it will open the google navigation software.
I would really hate if ATT cripped that function. Can someone confirm if the navigation software is already on the phone or can be possibly downloaded from the market?
Thanks!!
Yes, once you hit navigate, it prompts you to accept the google nav beta agreement and then opens google nav.
Open google maps, type in your destination and select navigate. Google navigation comes up. It says you have to install voice guidance support from the marketplace to get voice guidance.

Yippeee. The other post scared me for a moment. I would have had a really hard time switching from my N1 if the nav app was crippled by ATT.
Thanks guys!!
Got my Captivate today ,i can to confirm Google maps and navigation working no problem.
Yea I got it today and its there. I haven't tired it yet though.
I got text to speech app and tried it out and it worked perfectly
The app is nice. It works well with goggle maps. Now I need dock foe my car.

is it possible for anyone to upload the latest Google Maps apks on this thread? My problem is that i get the stupid 'not supported by your carrier' error when attempting to update. I have been able to update my google maps to 5.0 from outside the market and it is working fine, so i really don't understand the carrier related error. Please, anyone? Its free after all.
Thanks!
They need to stop cluttering up Gmaps with useless stuff. Becoming bloated slowly but surely.
But 5.2 is the newest...

Yep, Market shows the new version is 5.2.0
Yes, 5.2.0 is the new version of Google maps.
What's in this version:
- Post your reviews of places to Twitter.
- Check in at places with Google Latitude to earn status and share with friends.
- Ping Latitude friends to ask them to check in. Friends will get a check-in request notification from you.
- Search for a place to check in from Latitude if it's not in the suggested list of plac

Agreed. Adding functionality to the map functions is one thing, but adding lots of extraneous bling is quite another.
Ver 5.2.0 is out, what's news?
The search feature on Maps has completely stopped working for me. Nothing I search is returning results... Is anyone else having this problem?
I really need this feature working on my phone before I fly to LA next week, its unbelievable how much I depend on it :-/
Running
MyTouch 3G Slide
ROM: CM7
any gmaps 5.2.0 APK :S i canĀ“t update
Here it is,just pulled it up from the market, works quite good
Is there any reason to upgrade?
Given that Latitude is a non-starter (for me), is there any reason to get the newer version? I've been avoiding it since it didn't seem to have anything new besides bloatware that I'd rather avoid.
thanks for the apk file was looking for it..

I have a new Oneplus 7T and used ADB to remove bloatware and google apps. Looking for a good google maps alternative. I looked in Aurora and found quite a few but I don't know which ones are better. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I'd always prefer a FOSS alternative... Try OsmAnd.

These are all great suggestions. Thank you to all of you. I'll post which one I pick.
I tried HERE WeGo and OsmAnd. I did not try maps.me because a lot of reviews stated that it has intrusive ads.
I decided to go with HERE WeGo. I really wanted to use OsmAnd because of it being FOSS and it has a lot of options and settings. However, it couldn't even give me directions to local restaurants. I had HERE Maps when I had a Windows phone and I really liked that but I liked the look of the map better in OsmAnd. Like I mentioned I really wanted to go with OSMAnd but if it can't give me directions to simple places then I have to go with the HERE We Go app.
Thanks again to everyone for their suggestions.

Lifewire is a technology information and advice website, visited and trusted on by millions, AFAIK.
So having had the p40 pro and seen threads all over XDA about what are the alternatives i thought id share what i've found.
So for gmail, i've used the email app preinstalled (which does the same job)
google maps, I saw a post about here we go maps, so i've used that and it does exactly the same thing, i guess as the roads dont change and to be honest i found the speedometer element on it to be more accurate as I used my wifes s10 (as i got no other cellular GMS device) to compare GMS maps vs HMS maps and using the digital speedo in the car, so that was quite interesting.
google docs, I'm simply using what I've always used which is Microsoft office and for me I find it easier to use i guess its because its what I've always used.
Youtube, well for this i just added it as a short cut to my home screen, Even though its not an app i really use to be fair unless im on a tablet.
Playstore, Ive adjusted to appgallery and the petal search app which compliments it really well, yes you can use apkpure & aptoid etc however im just sticking to that.
I mean the misconception that android is google is crazy, I stepped away from the chains of IOS sometime ago for the reason I wanted freedom of apks, RIP showbox.
However if you've found alternatives to other google apps it could be handy, this is from what i use but for the time being ive not needed the use of any other apps as im still on lockdown in Wales.
let me know
Scott
Unfortunately lots of apps require google services. Some banking apps, some browser apps, etc. The problem is not limited to just chrome, maps, drive, youtube, etc. It is far broader and the user wouldn't know if he might have a problem unless he tried all apps that he needs without google services in order to find out which ones don't work.
From my point of view Microsoft has lots of google apps alternatives - onedrive, onenote, etc. Also YouTube which is critical for a lot of users can be used normally by installing YouTube Vanced.
I hope that some good and easy methods of installing google services show up or the Huawei ban is lifted.
There already many of these threads. .. bit hard for people to use when everything is just buried in hundreds of posts.

You are right, and for banking apps you can simply add the website to homescreen, also google maps is a PWA and runs great as a desktop shortcut! I did a lot of this with windows phone and had no issues whatsoever, google is not the be all and end all of mobile phones!

I've found to youtube. And I have my account connected there. So everything is synched. My p40 pro is without GMS. I only have youtube. And the best part is that it is premium and for free .
It is called vanced youtube....
I've come across it I believe on some XDA forum....
You lucky guys. I must go with gms on My p40 pro for now. Only because of one App, and thats My banking App from N26. In webpage i can't make money Transfers. The App is needed to Do this. I wrote to the N26 Support if they had Plans to offer the App in the App gallery, but they had Till now no Plans to Do that.
If anyone had a solution for this, i'm open for all.
Aurora store - an open source Google Play app that doesn't need GMS.
Microsoft Office - its far more usable than Google Docs
One Drive - works well especially if you have an office 365 subscription and it'll backup photos
There are a bunch of youtube apps on XDA that adblock and run in the background too....
Hello, everybody.
I recently bought a P40 Pro, a phone that I am absolutely LOVING. The only minor issues that I'm having is finding reliable alternatives for a few things.
I absolutely love the device, the app gallery and Petal Search has been amazing, however I am struggling to find the following:
A free, reliable and easy to use alternative to Google Sheets.
A map app that works well and is as good as Google Maps for using as a satnav day to day.
And could somebody please teach me how to bookmark the Youtube HTTP so that I can put it on my front page?
Thanks a lot,

For maps I've always used Waze anyway but seen a few big names on App Gallery like Tom Tom and Here we go, which I think used to be Nokia maps.

For Google Sheets I just use Microsoft Office off of AppGallery which includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
To replace Google Maps I've been using the new TomTom AmiGo app which is also on AppGallery.
And for YouTube - open it in your Huawei browser, click on the 3 dots in the top right hand corner and click 'Add To Homescreen.'
If you don't need to sign into YouTube you could just installed YouTube Vanced through Petal Search.

I've actually started to prefer YouTube Vanced over the actual YouTube app as Vanced allows you to play videod with the screen lock on. It's especially handy if you like listening to stuff on YouTube whilst driving.
For Google Maps, just download Google Maps apk. Works fine, you just can't login. Same goes for Google Chrome. For things like Google sheets, just open using Google Chrome and then add a shortcut to your home screen. You get an app icon and loads full screen. I did this for Google Photos.
