Just got my GNote today. I've had a Thinkpad Tablet for almost a year, and let's just say the GNote is already making me much happier.
I opened it and applied the firmware update. I've been playing around, and have found one annoying bug: Whenever I open or select S-Note the screen changes to maximum brightness. It doesn't matter whether I am opening the app from initial, or just switching back to an open S-Note through the open task selector. The screen goes to full brightness.
But, the settings bar for brightness does not change. When I pull up the menu by tapping the clock, the brightness bar will still say it is at the lowest brightness setting. When I touch the stylus to the slider at the lowest brightness setting, the screen immediately dims.
I've tried turning "Auto" brightness on and off, and have also looked for some obscure setting in S-Note. No luck.
Anyone else having this issue, or have a solution? It sounds minor, but when working in a dim room its a real shock to the eyes every single time I open S-Note.
Thanks,
JCHP
I'm not seeing that issue running S Note here and did the update earlier today but it was through Kies with a 1GB+ file instead of over-the-air ~50MB or so file.
Update: Ok, I see the issue now when you open a note within S Note.
I noticed this also. Like if i have browser on. Then do multiscreen and choose s note, the brightness will increase dramatically. Nothing major. Just noticed that also.

Weird. This is not happening to me either. Try going into Applications and clearing S Note data and cache then reboot.

The brightness I creases after you go into s note and choose a note. If i close the note or multiscreen, the brightness goes back to how I set it. You won't see the slider change. The brightness just increases on its own at that time.
I do have the latest update Installed.
I tried it and I also got the same result. Although, the brightness change occurs only when opening a note. In the S-Note "homescreen", where you choose which note you want, the brightness is the same as the requested setting I put.

Yes-- this is my issue exactly.
The slider is what makes me think this is a bug and not a feature: It doesn't change, although the brightness does. But, if I tap the slider at the point where it is, then the screen will dim to my preferred level, and I can work in the note at that dimmed brightness... until I switch to another app and come back, at which point the brightness again changes.
Its only an issue in dim lighting. I can see me making notes in my bed at night and swearing every time the screen suddenly brightens...
I've encountered the same thing. The update must have screwed something up.

There is no change in brightness on mine when I open or close S Note.
Having the same issue
I am having the same issue as well. Has anyone called Samsung customer service or reported this issue? This is extremely annoying. It started after the update. It was working just fine before.
I am having a similar issues with my S3. I will unlock my phone and sometimes I find the screen is really bright. I go into my settings and look at the brightness slider and it's set at 60%. As soon as I tap the brightness slider and my screen re dims back to the correct brightness. Had me thinking weather or not this is a hardware or software issue.
I am 90% sure it's software in my case Still annoying.
have the same issue. In meetings it turns up and I have to waste my battery, no time to change the slider.
This issue reminds of my problems with the my Lenovo TPT when in "always on" mode.
They fixed it, but i took until the 3th update...
Tell Samsung early enough so they may fix it soon, I know how annoying and painful it can get at night, I really disliked this issue.
Same issue. Any solution.?

same issue here , i have N8000 and when I bought it comes with Germany rom but without this bug, when i Change it to the Offical United Arab Emarits i have this bug I tried to find any soulation but no way it really annoying ...... so anybody !!!!!
really annoying
Just bought the tablet today and noticed the exact issue. I also noticed the same issue and what I did to fix the problem was to select the system tray (bottom right) and remove the auto checkbox and keep the brightness to full.
Hope that helps!
same thing. s note goes to maximum brightness (same with the camera app. too). a bit annoying but still in alive =) hopefully they fix both of them.
Reported it to samsung and...
Well I complained to Samsung about this and they told me it sounded like a bad installation of the firmware, which i dont really think its the case because I've had this bug since I bought it and because many people have it too. Anyways they told me to reset to factory settings and if the problem was still there to send the tablet to some address... but I dont really want to reset factory settings because i would lose all my app data and Im not rooted as to just make a backup with Titanium...
anyway just putting out there if someone is brave enough to reset to factory settings (maybe someone who just bought it) and tell us what happens I would be grateful
Note Pro
Same issue here on note pro 12.2. Really annoying. Anybody solve this problem?
I’ve used stock or (virtually stock) Android phones for years. My last properly skinned phone was a Samsung Galaxy s II. So using EMUI on this phone has been interesting. There is a lot that I like, but here I’ll describe a few annoying quirks I’ve noticed, plus any partial-solutions I use. Hopefully this will inform perspective and current P20 owners, but also, if you have a solution to any of these problems, do let me know!
- The settings menu is terrible. They have messed with it so much, and added so many settings, that it is often impossible to find what you’re looking for. The solution is to search, which, thankfully, works well.
- The lock screen wallpaper changes every time you unlock the phone. I feel like an idiot, but I can’t work out how to set my own (single!) wallpaper. There are these collections which you can choose between, and then from the lock screen itself you can favourite wallpapers from the collection (not sure what this does) and pause on a wallpaper from the collection, and it looks like you can add your own collections, but this doesn’t seem to work. There MUST be a work around. All I want is the same wallpaper on my lock and home screen!
- Notification content (including media controls) is always hidden on the lockscreen until you authenticate, regardless of the app setting. This seems to be a bug. Setting up face unlock (and swipe to unlock) at least means you can see your lock screen with notification content when at a face-unlock-friendly angle.
- The double tap vol down to launch camera works fine, except when I’m listening to music, when it just turns down the music. No idea why they don’t give this functionality to the lock button like most OEMs.
- Unlock by voice for Google Assistant doesn’t seem to work. I’ve had this problem on other phones so don’t know if I’d blame Huawei. It responds to ‘OK Google’ from screen off (which is better than my OnePlus) but won’t actually unlock.
- The always on display is a bit weak. It doesn’t even properly show notifications.
Anything to add? What EMUI quirks have you found?
Try this for always on display and notifications

I have sometimes problems with starting my spotify automatically when connecting a bluetooth device, I think a sleep mode problem. Another bug is the one with updating widgets. My calendar widget f.e. crashes after a time. found a workaround with "your calendar widget".
But I think all in all its a great phone with great features

You can find this setting in 'Security & privacy' - 'Screen lock & passwords'
=> 'Update covers' to enable and disable it and 'Covers' to choose the pictures to show
EMUI has made me fall back in love with OxygenOS - the way EMUI treats notifications and the lock screen is diabolical. If I unlock my Oneplus 3 but don't read a notification, I can lock it again and the notification remains on the lock screen. The notifications span the whole screen, and work perfectly.
Also, Spotify on OxygenOS uses album cover art as lock screen wallpaper when playing, similar to how EMUI treats the local Music app.
This gonna be a debate for eternity.
People who come from xiaomi or samsung wont feel too awkward with emui,
Different case if you come from AOSP, or Oxygen or LOS.
Best solution is slapping NOVA launcher as soon as you use the phone.
I've used several Huawei phones now, in fact since the Mate 8 they've tended to be my main phones through most of the year (I still try others, but tend to come back for the battery life and cameras, granted the cameras have not been as good as competitors but the camera systems are more fun to me as a person with an amateur interest in photography and I've taken a lot of shots I don't think I could have got from the others). The P8Max was my first, and the UI/OS was a bit of a dogs breakfast - so many things were broken (many due to trying to increase battery longevity) and many other things required complex workarounds beyond installing Nova which I've had on each of them. It's pretty well fine now, but if you're coming from Samsung or others it's very different and will take a bit of time to adjust to - particularly the level of granular control you have on things affecting battery life. Once you get a handle on it you'll probably end up appreciating a lot of what it offers.
Google Assistant works fine but it makes conflict with Huawei voice control (so turn off one of them)
Double tap volume down to launch camera is a great idea but why the hell it does not work when players or different apps are in the background.....
Hi there!
Setting your own lockscreen carousel:
Settings>security & privacy>screen lock & passwords>magazine unlock>subscriptions>added by me>add>choose image
You can create your own cycle of wallpapers.
In themes App make sure you set me>customize>lock screen style>magazine unlock
I wish adjusting the volume on Bluetooth headphones adjusted the master volume like on all previous phones I've had instead of acting like an in-line control.

Hi how do you get rid of double tap on home screen it's do annoying it's a short cut to access latest apps that have used I have Nova Which is excellent and I'm coming from a Samsung S7 to a P20 pro please help !!
To enable or stop scrolling wallaper just swype from the bottom on the lockscreen and you will see Pause button at the left. if you press that, the scrolling will be disabled and a "play" icon will remain.
I've debloating quite a lot from emui.
Installed swap torpedo
Runs faster now and battery lasts longer.
Huawei should offer a vanilla update.
Last time I saw so much bloat was on Samsung.
Unnecessary.
EMUI was one of the reasons I ditched my P10 after 6 months, went back to an iPhone, then to a Nokia 5...
Have any of the roms developed for the P20 done away with EMUI otherwise this device will be another one i'll have to remove from the list of potential upgrades.
Killing foreground apps
Hi, just bought the p20 pro after years with Samsung. I have noticed that it often kills apps that I am currently using, sending me back to the home screen (reminds me of a crash to desktop in windows computers).
After some googling similar problems I adjusted the app auto start and ignore battery optimization settings and it did get better, although it is still killing apps which I presume is using a lot of memory or battery (or both?), for example posting stuff on Instagram (Instagram is whitelisted from optimization and managed manually).
This is really bugging me, anyone else with the same problem? I'm running android 8.1.0, EMUI 8.1.0 and memory always stays between 2,5 and 3 GB.

Yeah, it's turning out to be a deal breaker for me.. Too bad since I really like the phone. Just hope it's a bug ?
Something seems to be happening to spotify when it is running in the background using my bluetooth headphones. I get stuttering and odd pauses, its basically unusable.
I have found if I use andriod auto to run spotify or use the wake lock program to keep the phone in a higher power mode it seems to help. If I have the charger plugged in it works fine as well. It appears to be some sort of power saving issue (yes I have told the phone to ignore spotify's power usage) or something to do with bluetooth power saving. But it works fine in a car.
Thats my only real complaint, and had I known I would have this issue I would have probably grabbed a onePlus device. Using Sure 215's
One thing I did notice, and I also fixed the problem quite simply.
I turned the display Resolution to HD from FHD my thinking was with a lower resolution I'd have better battery and better performance.
What I got was worse.
60fps lagged so badly it was unusable.
Transitions especially to the Google feed lagged and was annoying.
Asphalt 9 lagged and was extremely crap.
Turned FHD back on, all went back to silky smoothes??
Logic didn't exactly prevail here but it works.
So in short if you've turned on adaptive resolution or HD.
Turn it off
I'm facing this weird problem with my p20 pro. In. 128 and 131 and 152 firmware versions whenever in have an incoming call my screen doesn't wake up to show my who is calling me, unless I press the power button or the fingerprint sensor. If the call is missed my screen wakes up normally to show me the missed call notification. Any solution?? I have no fingerprint lock or pass code lock. Just swipe.

I'm using this phone since three days ago and I immediately noticed this issue, and it is specially annoying when I try to use swipe writing. I suspected that occurs because the system doesn't know if your are trying to write using the keys located at the edges of the screen like q, p, etc. or just using gestures. In consequence I tried to adapt the keyboard using the one hand feature (Google keyboard) and putting it in the center of the screen and it worked, the lag disappear. I'm attaching a screenshot because my English sucks. I hope you can see this way what I did.
I tried turning on 'Show virtual keyboard' in Settings > Languages & input > Physical keyboard, and it seems much better for me now.

I have already reported to MIUI team but while they do something about it, i've installed Edge Gestures to replace full screen mode, to hide navbar i've installed Navigation Gestures and finally AutoNotification for hidding apps in background notification. I have lost gestures animations but works perfect and the only issue it's volume bar in landscape like the image attached.
This is a nightmare and makes the device horrible to use.
I reported it to MIUI team weeks ago. The best solution for now is disable vibration on keypress within Google Keyboard, which makes it way less noticeable.
I'm using miui 10 weekly on eu roms, the problem is still there...
I'm on xiaomi.eu 8.8.3 and it seems like it has been solved through software update. I no longer have the issue testing in sketch app, or using any keyboard with full screen gestures.
Issue:
1.Some users (like me) must have faced issue of screen ghosting or retention in which if the device is used at max brightness, they see a ghosted image on sides of their phone. (Especially visible when switching from a light theme to dark, for eg, going in chrome incognito mode you will see it)
2.Usually it happens after flashing a custom ROM or kernel.
Fix:
Method 1:
1. In case if its a custom ROM, go to Settings > Display > LiveDisplay
2. Set the Color Profile to ‘Standard'.
3. Go to color calibration setting and set the following values:
Red at 90%
Green at 90%
Blue at 90%.
4. Keep the display screen of for some time (15 min) and boom! Issue solved.
[Note: Max brightness may feel a little less than before but its still better, you will get used to it]
Method 2:
1.In case you have a custom kernel, you can refer to other threads or manually set the values of Red, Green and Blue by yourself by using a ‘Kernel Manager App'.
Just keep it at minimum than its original values.
Conclusion:
This issue is NOT a hardware issue, its a software issue that can be fixed by implementation of any following methods.
Source:
I got through some other threads of Redmi having same issue. Just the difference is in the settings I used, you can customize it as per your own will BUT make sure that the ghosting does not appear by use of that setting. If successful, you may replay

It is not the case that every user will face it. In case if it occurs, you may make use of these procedures.
Mostly, if you use max brightness and switch suddenly to dark grey, you can notice it (in custom ROMs / custom kernel ).

No it is a software issue. I am not talking about the yellow spot issue (that is hardware issue)
This one is ghosting or temporary burn in caused due to change in the default color calibration.
I faced it before but after trying the above settings, even at max brightness, the ghosting did not appear again. So it actually works.
Ghosting does not remain forever in LCD. So its not harmful to hardware in any way. (Just buggy)

I agree. Screen Retention or Ghosting is mostly present on other devices (I'm not talking about the Pocophone alone but on every other devices) and can be fixed via software implementations or updates. Changing color profile and/or color settings can be a solution too.

So i contacted other who owns pocof1 , but their device don't have these issues. Then i contacted the service center and they reinstalled the MIUI11 but the problem persists.
So then i thinking of a screen replacement since i m on a warranty period so should i do that to solve this issue?.
Also u gave the settings to resolve the issue for a stock/CustomUI but wht for the MIUI , pls give the setting for them too.

This reply is pretty late, sorry for that.
1.You need to be rooted.
2.Download ColorChanger app from PlayStore.
3.Give root privileges.
4.Decrease the color in Custom1/Custom2/Custom3 by long tapping to these values:
R:240
G:240
B:240
S:1.00.
5.Save it (top left corner)
Con: You need to apply this every time you boot into your device.
You can upgrade to pro and enable “Activate on boot" from app setting to make this happen automatically.
I did it but it doesn't work, I'll consider change the hole panel
Can you take a look at the attached screenshot and confirm if these values are okay. Apart from RGB values, do I need to tweak anything else? Thanks in advance.
Oh I see, I got this problem, and realize I set livedisplay profile to dynamic. I thought my screen was wore out

This is a hardware problem, i tried everything and failed so i got original lcd folder replaced from the service center and now no screen retention.
I am from India itself, do you know which service center to go to? Since poco split from mi, am i in trouble or i should head to the mi service center. And my is under a warranty of 6 months and i'm in the 3rd month now....is it free or you got to pay money for the service?
Thanks in Advance.

I solve this problem on miui oficial without root, Just applying standard contrast on screen settings.
I don't know if this is a "bug or feature" type of situation, but I just got my brand new Poco F2 Pro and I noticed that the colors in the lock screen are washed out. I deleted all the registered fingerprints from the Settings and suddenly the colors are... colorful again.
So, is this a bug that Xiaomi can fix with a software update, is it a hardware issue, or is it intentional and necessary for the fingerprint sensor to work?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
i can confirm this phenomena
Correct observation.
Don't know the reason but probably a bug not solved with Miui 12.
It did this on MIUI 11 as well just not as noticeable. It drives me insane tbh, especially the quick settings menu. Can't even take a pic of it. I've tried a handful of lockscreen themes and found one that is bearable as it let's you tint the lockscreen.
I see it too
Same here.
Did you use advance color gamut setting instead of auto? I noticed this when color gamut option is not set to auto.
Make sure if you're using dark mode, in settings/display/dark mode you don't have wallpaper darken... This creates a washes out look
I have experienced this too and have found no surefire workaround. However, what does seem to be more effective is if you set your wallpaper through the options in the settings menu and not through a launcher (like Nova for instance). It reduces the grainy quality of the lockscreen, but the image is still not the best.
I dont think its a bug, since in-display fingerprint reader needs a very bright light-source, the display itself will illuminate to the max for the fingerprint scanner to works, which is essentially the same as "sun-mode". In that mode, all color will look bad.
Same I felt it today...I faced then I went to shop they wiped out my data :3 when I setup my wallpaper and the fingerprint it's happening like before..and there's another bug on dark mode as well ,when you lower your brightness completely, the settings font will start its color fading :crying:

Auto mode actually gives a better contrast to the lock screen wallpaper than Advanced, I didn't realize. ?

Unfortunately, I don't think it's a bug either. What doesn't make sense to me is that the entire screen needs to have these washed colors for the fingerprint sensor to work. It's such a small part of the screen, why wash out everything?
I saw it too. I was using Advanced Color Gamut option. Then I switched to "Saturated" and it solved it.
Unfortunately that didn't work either.
Strange thing is that it doesn't happen on my 9T Pro.

I have no idea why tho.. Im guessing maybe it have something to do with "Sun mode" kinda "overclock" the entire display when fingerprint-reader need to, and then switch back to normal display mode right after.
But that kinda defeats one of the OLED key-strength, being able to lights-up individual pixel instead of lighting whole screen. Doesnt make sense to me either..
We need to report this from the miui developer guys its so annoying especially when you're in a dark room or room with lights off

If you used other Xiaomi devices you'd know it didn't happen before.. I hope it's not a hardware thing.
Disabled my fp at least for now. Can't enjoy a brand new phone with these washed out colours.
Ahhh. So it's not just mine lol. I played with so many different settings trying to fix this crap. I gave up lol

I agree with you, as this behaviour didnt happen on my Mi 9T Pro, although I suspect it could have caused by both "sun-mode" and Xiaomi decision to use white-light for fp illumination instead of turquoise-like color on previous model. Im still using it, for convenience anyway.
In my experience it is just happened with gamut color option, with other color option it is no issue. My super mars wallpaper look amazing.
