My issue
Hi everyone, I have a Nexus 6P and want to route my audio through a USB type C converter to 3.5mm headphone Jack. I have purchased one online, but it doesn't seem to be working. I have seen that the Moto Z has this adapter and I assumed one I found online would be compatible with my 6P. The reason I want to do this is because I prefer for the AUX jack to come out the bottom of my phone.
What I have tired
Changed 'Select USB Configuration' to all the different options and tried playing music.
Tried 'audio routing' apps from the app store
What I would like to know
Is this because I need to change a setting in my phone to route music out of the USB C?
Do I need to get some kind of DAC to allow support for this?
Has anyone else tried this with their phone?
Thanks

One reason is that to me it makes more sense to put your phone upside down into you pocket. I've always done this at least. So when listening to music I have to put it the other way round. I have also heard the USB C port offers better sound quality.

Re:sound quality, you'd possibly see a quality increase if you use an external Digital to Analogue Converter or fully usb-c headphones. BUT, if you're using a little dongle (if it's possible), then the phone is still managing the analogue conversion and, thus, a very similar quality of audio output. Now I don't know of the 6p's ability to pipe it straight out iPhone 7 style through a dongle, but short of buying a DAC and going whole-hog on an audio upgrade, I'd just flip your phone the other way in your pocket and go the standard route.
Just my $.02
I have been looking for a solution to this too and I seem to have found one. I poked around on Amazon and I think I finally found adapters that work, here's the link https://goo.gl/QT2ith This the only one with positive reviews so when it comes in on the 30th I'll let all of you know.

Looks quite similar to the one that I got. Hopefully it works for you! Let me know how it goes
I read recently that the current implementation of audio over USB-C isn't very efficient or battery friendly. There's a new spec being ratified to provide audio like the iphone can. Hopefully that's a firmware change and not a hardware one.
http://www.theverge.com/2016/8/17/12519936/intel-usb-type-c-headphone-jack-replacement-idf-2016
I don't think it's possible on the 6P, not without using a USB DAC anyway.
As far as I'm aware, the adapter you have is for a USB 3/3.1 interface. While the 6P has USB-C it is USB 2.
I'm able to get audio out of my USB C port, but it's with a USB headset. Haven't tried it with a 3.5mm headphone adapter, but havd no reason to try it either.
This is weird. Because i have a pair of Sennheiser Urbanites (Wireless edition), and i can use bluetooth, aux, and usb (like for a computer) audio. I once tried to turn off the headsets (bluetooth off, aux and usb still works if connected), and turned off bluetooth on my phone. Then i used my USB type C to USB type A Female adapter (from the google store), and connected the usb-cable from the headsets into the type c adapter. it did output audio through the usb-cable.

Bluetooth headphones usually have their own DAC, so the audio for all but the Aux is still being sent through the DAC first, which is supported by older USB standards.
The new USB 3.1 Audio standard can pass through analogue audio from the internal DAC, which is what I believe phones such as the Moto Z utilise. Otherwise the adapter would require it's own DAC, which would make it far larger and more expensive.
Not sure if you will find a good solution at the moment since they just created a standard for audio over usb c http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20160927006252/en/USB-IF-Announces-USB-Audio-Device-Class-3.0
Did the amazon converter end up working for you?
My experience so far.
Hi, I ordered some usb c to 3.5mm & out of the box so far they aren't working. I tried Neutron and tried to force the audio to usb but unsuccessfully with phone not recognizing the USB connection.
On the other hand the type C to usb-a adapter worked beautifully using mixplorer. If I get working, will update. Thanks.
Does anyone know if a type c splitter or adapter exists that splits the port allowing for the use of 3.5mm headphones and charging simultaneously? I've only seen an adapter by belkin for apple's lightning port. Thanks!
You need a USB-C hub with charging support. I don't know of any that have been verified to work.
Hoping for something like this as well.

The battery of LP3 is excellent so no need to charge and listen at the same time. Or get a BT headset or BT receiver if you gonna use it to your primitive car. =D

unfortunately, there are times when i need to make a call (voice or video) outside of my car and the battery is low, requiring a charge (such as on a flight). bluetooth headphones aren't always readily available (or charged), so I'd rather not be at the mercy of a single port/cable. But yes, the battery is awesome and don't have any issues with that. I just like having options in case of an "emergency." I don't want to have to choose between taking a call or charging my phone.
Any update
any update on this?
I just bought the phone and I need to use the headphone adapter as well as a midi keyboard, if that's not possible its going back - bluetooth audio is not an option, there is a delay.

How convenient! You knew that the phone has no 3.5mm port and that there is no official adapter and yet you ordered it and will return it for what?
Delay? Even a cheap BT headset does not cause any delay while listening to music or streaming video or casting to TV.

Yes I knew there was no headset and yes I will be returning it. And yes it is convenient since there is a hassle free return from Amazon. I needed a phone since mine broke so I bought the Le Pro 3, which seems to have pretty good performance but on the long run it will not help for what I need.
As far as a bluetooth headset, that is not an option since the output needs to be connected to a mixer or a DI etc and not to headphones, so if anyone knows if a usb type c hub will work, let me know... before the 30 days of the return period please!

I thought I'd share an update for people that may need this:
I used a usb type-c to usb 3 adapter and plugged in a usb 3 hub (by Unitek). I plugged in the cheapest/smallest usb card that I had (Gigaware, bought it from Radioshack years ago) and the phone recognized it as a sound card right away (auto enabling CDLA), then I plugged in a midi keyboard on the usb hub and everything worked.

Have you tried either of those? Neither seems to have any reviews. All the ones I see on Amazon seem to have poor reviews. Surprising there isn't a good option for this kind of product yet.

I tried searching for "3.5 usb c braided" but nothing showed up as a splitter. The word "lightning" in your description sounds like an iPhone product.
I did try an item off of amazon but had to return it because only the audio worked. Ampere would show that it was connected but it would still show as discharging instead of charging. I hesitate to take a chance, even if it's only several dollars on something without a free return/shipping promise.

Except those are lighting adapters for iPhones, not ubc adapters.
Edit - The photo clearly shows a lightning adapter. In the description farther down the page it discusses using it for the iPhone, but in the "item specifics" it says USB C. Hmmmm.
Edit 2 - One of the reviews shows that it is USB C as you have said.

Curious if anyone else has procured the new Pixel USB-C earbuds and tried them on a OP6 and/or OP5/5T. They are suppose to work on ANY PHONE running Android P....I am running the Android P Beta 5 on my OP6 and the phone doesn't seem to recognize that the headphone are plugged in AT ALL.... nada, nothing.

Someone on the OP forum just hipped me to turn on OTG setting....and now they work like a charm....though maybe I'll have to reactive this setting each time as it supposedly turns off after 10 minutes which will be a pain.
And pleasantly surprised to find out the BASS kicks on these things...as all the other reviews I have seen out there say they lacked such.
You need to activate OTG in the settings get them working.
Hey,
I also got these buds for my OP6. They work fine and I also enabled always on for the OTG option. But the music control (pause, start, skip, google assistant) are not working at all.
Volume UP and DOWN are working fine.
Any suggestions?

Naw. It is suppose to work on all phones with USB C and Android P regardless of port version. Hopefully OP will get rid of the need to activate the OTG setting since the OP6T won't even have a headphone jack.

Theory:
The OP6T gets Usb-C headphones and maybe the handling of Usb-C headphones is already shipped to user within the beta versions.
I can't imagine OP lets its users always reenable the otg option when they remove the headphone jack and develop their own usb-c headphones.
I can#t verify this at the moment maybe someone else can?
So today I tried the OP6T USB-C adapter on my OP6 and nothing. Wasn't even detected. I didn't try turning on OTG but come on, I can't believe this isn't supported with Android 9 out of the box. Of course it works on the OP6T fine.

Hi,
Let's start a USB C earphone support thread. So far I've tried the following, without full support:
- Razer Hammerhead, Music Yes, Microphone in Recorder Yes, Calls No
- OnePlus Bullets, Music Yes, Recorder Yes, Calls No
I'm starting to think all USB C headphones are going to be like this on the Note 9... Surprised they haven't updated the source to support these kinds of headphones ahead of the Note 10 and it's lack of 3.5mm port.
Same problem
Same problem here. No solution so far. Going to take these things back.

I'm thinking they don't see a reason to have usb c headphone fully supported on the Note 9 because it actually has a 3.5mm port? We all know Samsung is the last to adopt certain things. It would be nice if they did support it though because the range of possibilities would be more for listening to music. Headphone Jack busted...not a problem, use usb c port etc.
Xiaomi ANC HiRes audio type C earphones, not working at all
I've tried Google's for pixel 3 earphones. Music and control (including mic on recorder) yes, phone calls no. But I must say: the sound through these earphones surpasses anything I've tried on my note 9. Even without phone call function the quality of music coming out of these earphones is worth it!
HTC U-Sonic USB-C earbuds are a no-go all the way around on both the Note 9 & Note FE.
The Developer Options on the Note FE even has an audio source option in the USB Configuration section & still nothing.
IIRC, the HTC USB-C buds were one of the earliest models available & may have been proprietary to HTC phones.
I have got them to work on a few non-HTC phones along the way, but, Samsung isn't one of 'em (OnePlus/BlackShark/RazerPhone come to mind,IIRC).
Sent from my Note Fan Edition using XDA Labs
I wouldn't be surprised if the Note 9, 8 and FE don't support the use of USB Type-C headsets for calling.
I use a Lenovo USB-C hub that I plug my Astro Mixamp into and listen to music.
I can't get phone calls to work tho.
i tried plugging note 10 C headphone to my note 9 so it is just able to hear music but can not answer the call. However, the C headphone did on my S10e.
OnePlus Type-C Bullets work!
Hey everybody! I just came on to search whether or not my type C bullets from my OnePlus 6t would work on the Note 9 I just got. Before plugging them in, I went into developer options and unchecked "Disable USB audio routing". Plugged them in and the sound incredible! The in-line volume, play and pise functions on the Bullets work as well. However, attempted to make a phone call and it just stayed defaulted to the phones earpiece with the Bluetooth or speaker phone option. Anyway, just thought I'd share my experience a few moments ago lol. Yes it would be great if we could get these to work with a simple phone call. Hate to just put these Bullets in a drawer to collect dust until the day they are supported by a phone I own lol.

Okay so i know this thread was started a while back, I just wanna say for any new Googler's that the Note 9 cannot support calls because it has the 3.5mm ear jack which handles all the analogue sounds means phone calls, "Hey Google" and similar cannot be passed through the Type C headsets/headphones. Its hardware so no apps can help with that.

Not sure why would that be the case on type C to 3.5mm aux cable when it's wired all the same unless your usb type c is missing some pins.
