How to change continental code?

Hi all,
I'm planning to purchase my first HTC ('HTC- Touch Pro' alias the 'Raphael'-kinda) through some colleague who'll visit china next week. Yet, I'm trying to find out what tools and cabs I can find for this beautifull piece of art, really great threads around here!!
Also I'm trying to find some tool / way to edit the Continental code (i don't know the used code/term for this) but so far without result.
Posting here i'm hoping for someone to be able to lead me in the right direction, link me in the right direction or tell me to stop wasting time .
Yours, Jappo23
Additional info:
* the HTC - Touch Pro
** the plan: 1) purchase @ china. 2) Tweak the mobile so i can use it in Europa (NL) 3) Freak around with my cool mobile

i would go here
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/
and find my phone and read about flashing to another

and how to get around regional blocks if there

[Q] Removing Carrier Firmware

Hi,
I need help.
Can anyone please offer me their time/experience to solve this problem and answer these questions? I would greatly appreciate it.
Before posting I searched the forum but could not find a solution. I read
"How to Change carrier specific (Videotron) firmware to original Google firmware?" and other threads but I don't think any apply to my situation.
I live in Japan but don't speak a word of this language and wish to retain original English setup.
My Jap carrier, Softbank, offers huge discounts to buy HTC Desire HD but their phone has Softbank Firmware.
I would like to retain HTC SENSE environment which is present on the phone:
1.
Delete the present keyboard - this one has the option to switch between kanji & normal - and install a normal SENSE English Keyboard
2.
Use swipe in English (and possibly in Italian)
3.
Update to the latest SENSE firmware every time it comes out
4.
Unlock the phone (it's Sim locked) to be able to use other carrier's sim
5.
Access Internet with Softbank's flat rate data access (if I use NON Softbank phones, for some reason, I am charged astronomical fees)
6.
Wipe off all the japanese crap (apps & settings) from the phone.
Can anyone help me with any or all my issues? Please? May I also ask someone to explain to me what's the difference between rooting and flashing?
Thanks!
Tommaso

a NEVER-solved-problem: SMS encoding/decoding or character set

Hi,
This is a great great problem in my country without a solution yet:
Turkish characters are not shown in the recieved SMSs. Instead of them only a space there.
For example:
written by another phone and sent to android: "yoğurt yiyorum şu anda"
the recieved message: "yo urt yiyorum u anda"
The phones which are bought from Turkey and not flashed a custom rom don't have this problem.
They (actually, all the phones those are sold here, in Turkey) have an expression on their boxes: “This device is in accordance with ETSI TS 123.038 V8.0.0 (or the code of the subsequent version) and ETSI TS 123.040 V8.1.0 (or the code of the subsequent version) technical features that include all the Turkish characters.”
I think, the custom ROMs are not in accordance with these standards.
I have two android phones at the moment: a Galaxy Spica i5700 (bought from Turkey), and a Nexus S (which I bought from US).
Spica had the Turkish characters first. But I have rooted and flashed the phone, so lost the characters. Since I don't have the original ROM, I can not get them back...
Until here, I tried to describe the problem.
Now I will give what I have that can help to solve the problem:
1- ETSI links: They are not the exact versions but the closest that I could find.
ETSI TS 123 038 V8.3.0
ETSI TS 123 040 V9.2.0
2- An Original Turkish ROM: it's for Galaxy S i9000
http://www.multiupload.com/ZCLE3EOPWH (it's a PIT file)
It will be a great favor if anyone can solve this problem...
Thanks in advance,
Erkam

I think you are possibly doing this in the wrong area. I think that if you want traction with a change like this, that you would need to do one of three things.
1) Contact maintainers or on the boards of a ROM you like to use (Cyanogen, etc)
2) Try to get it noticed by Google on their official Bug Tracker and Feature Request Tracker for support in stock Android OS
3) Code the fix yourself, Cyanogen source and "AOSP" stock android are available, and introducing character-set capabilities into the messaging app aren't exactly trivial things, however, with time and dedication I am sure it is possible.
I agree that foreign character coding out of stock Android isn't always there, or if it is, it isn't universal across all of the stock applications (like your example of SMS/Messaging application). Does this do this also in GoogleVoice? Or maybe you don't have access to Google Voice since you are outside of the US.
First, I want to thank you a lot for spending your time to answer
I tried your second advice but did not get a solution, yet. Still waiting.
I wanted to try the 3rd one too, actually. But I need to gain more computer/coding skills to achieve that. I could not even find an understandable guide to learn (or maybe I am too noob to understand).
So, the remaining advice is the first one and I am going to take it immediately
As you said, since I am outside of the US, I do not have access to Google Voice, unfortunately.
But, if it is ok for you, I can send a message to your google voice to check it.
by the way, ofcourse, it is not only a problem of Turkey, but also Spain, France etc.. I could not find a solution in their forums, neither.
Thanks again, for your help.

[Q] V1277 Language english US and not UK help

Hi all,
This is my first post here so please be kind and help a complete nube.
I recently purchased a V1277 android dual sim phone from China via Amazon UK. Superb phone and very pleased. However, in setting up the phone I noticed that the language option only has English US available. Not too much of a problem you might think but it means many apps set themselves via the language set so as a result I only have access to Amazon US for instance. A further worry is that my dual sims keep telling me I'm roaming even though they are registered in the UK.
The phone is unbranded but is an Android 4.0.4 MTK6577 Dual Core 1.0GHz 512MB/4GB 4.3-inch Capacitive Screen 3G Smartphone with WiFi GPS HDMI bought from DrakoTec via Amazon UK.
Under the Settings/Language area there seems to be a restricted list of available languages available and specifically only English, which is English US. The strange thing is I can select an English UK keyboard.
Any ideas on how one might change the language to English UK via some hidden menu or are we talking of rooting only?
Many thanks in advance for you help.

Well it looks as if I have managed to solve this myself .
Discovered an interesting app called Set Locale and Language, by brucedior, in the Play store and it works. Even rebooted and it kept the change so anybody else having an issue with missing languages check out that free app.

in need of Inavi KE100 Gps Device softwere

hi everyone,
I don't know if XDA is the best place to ask for this but I looked everywhere and could not find a single clue on how to update this device.
It's a navigation device that uses gps, it's korean so the website is really hard to move through. I managed to find a device manager software (also on korean) but as far as I can tell to update my device I need to register it. and it's asking me for a phone number that starts with (010 or 011 or 017 ...) and I have no idea which country is that (presumably korea ?).
anyway the device model is (INAVI KE100) if anyone can help.
thanks in advance.
