The installation's process and some details [TWRP, ROOT, GAPPS]
Hey!
I finally install and run the beta on my device. The process is very simple and easy to follow:
1. Get the stock rom on your device without root. You will have to do a full wipe of your data and cache from the Recovery. If you have installed a GSI (as me) you can simply use the Unbrick Tool shared on XDA. After that, just flash from a OTG device in the stock recovery the rom. It should install normally (I did it about three times). Let the device restart normally and configure it.
2. At this point, you will have your device working with the android 10 beta without Google Services and root. To get them, follow the next steps. In the developer's settings enable the usb depuration and reboot into the bootloader menu (if you are here, you don't need a guide to do this).
Once in the bootloader, you will have to type the next commands from a PC:
Code:
fastboot oem nubia_unlock NUBIA_NX629J
Code:
fastboot flash recovery [URL="https://forum.xda-developers.com/red-magic-3/development/recovery-unofficial-twrp-nubia-red-t3962482"]twrp.img[/URL]
Code:
fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
You can extract the vbmeta.img from the package of the beta.
You should can boot the custom recovery without problems. There is an importante failure at this point. I can't acces to the data of the sdcard of my device. It could be a problem if you flash a wrong module in magisk and you can't delete it from the recovery.
To get the gapps working and root in the device, flash the "pico" package from the open gapps project page and flash the last version of magisk (maybe this could be the cause of the encrypted data in the twrp, I will be experimenting other options (the most evident thing is that the recovery is not the correct ones for this rom).
3. Just reboot the device and enjoy the new android 10 experience on Red Magic 3. You shold be able to proceed to finish the setup and install all the apps you want. The are some things that didn't work for me: some syncs with the google account (Google Keep, Calendar, etc.), auto-rotation (gyroscope), the music notification panel, various notifications, etc. You can't recover your apps and data from a past backup, the rom doesn't give the storage permission to the Google Play Services, so that's the problem. Just install them from the playstore. You will have to reboot one time before use the play store normally.
I hope the developers of Nubia could make a fully working global rom for this great device. Until then, we have this new option to get the best experience of RM3.
Important: If you just don't like the rom and you would like to downgrade to android 9, you will have to use the unbrick tool in order to avoid a softbrick caused by the anti-rollback system. I tried and it works, but after the program finished the unbrick process the phone started to boot into a black screen, only lighting up the led in a green colour. It was strange and I believed that my phone was bricked without possibility to recover it. After a few tries to reboot the device pressing the power button, I was able to boot without problems into the 2.07 global rom europe version.

Can I install this on red magic 3s?
does anyone know gyro solution for this ROM just missing that so you can use as daily ROM

Hi. I just installed the rom without formatting the phone and the code of the screen lock that was previously 6 figures has become 4 and they are not the first 4 of the previous one.
Does anyone know what it can be or am I going to have to format it?

Thank you for your useful post. After reading it, I tried the ROM myself, with about the same results. Then I used the unbrick tool to reverse to Android 9.
Things that didn't work for me in the beta:
- Bluetooth kept restarting every 10 seconds, I couldn't use my Bluetooth headset
- Some incompatibility between the ROM and GAPPS, Google Play working only on occasions; after installing some stuff some apps refused to start ( Phone, Settings, Outlook etc).
It was an interesting experience, but it can't be used as the daily driver, at least not for me.

Sorry, I can't help you because I am in the same probleme... I don't find anything.
But first, did you unlock the fastboot ? (by huawei site)
hey..
same pb on trt-al00 device.. it is android 7 and not installing to Google Play Services..
GAPPs in Huawei Enjoy 7 Plus
I managed to unlock the bootloader, install TWRP recovery and root my China bought Huawei Enjoy 7 Plus.
Then, I installed open_gapps-arm-7.0-mini-20171101 via TWRP, wiped cache and rebooted.
The problem now is that Google Play Store won't open (it quickly prompts "Checking info" and then crashes) and neither can I sign in to my Google account.
Same with the "pico" version. The "stock" version installation failed due to lack of space.

I was wondering if we could flash its global twin brother Huawei Y7 Prime stock firmware into Huawei Enjoy 7 Plus. I just could not find the rom file available to try.
Try the installation with the Magic Module. To use a Magisk module use this guide.

Could you please share how did you got that? I've been looking for TWRP / root just for installing gApps (the **** GMSCore / google installers from HiApp / miui, and so on are NOT working, GMSCore doesn't install, and i always get the "install GMSCore libs for app to work")
I was happy with my Note3 when it suffered an accident in china, bought quickly a mobile "please with global support", and yes, it works great... but without google apps. and I really need them (most important: for many 3rd party using login; lesser: many apps bought in play store, gmaps with its history mode, and so)
In fact, I don't need to nstall everything, I think GMSCore is enough; i've tried to install via ADB but every version i find (even in MicroG) says the package is signed with V2 but signature is not present; So maybe we could have it working if we find a SIGNED for Androiod 7 / emui 5.1 version of GMSCore.apk

Did you use the chinese .bat file included on the zip file to flash TWRP? I didn't get this error.
Both recovery can be accessed. When I turn it on while pressing vol+ button, if the phone is connected to the USB, it boots to the stock recovery. If it is not connected, it boots to TWRP. The vol+ button has to be released as soon as the screens lights.

You said rigth. Every recovery is avaliable (from huawei site:
Phone off state, you can enter Fastboot / eRecovery / Recovery / upgrade these modes:
Need to connect the computer:
Fastboot mode: long press the volume key + power button.
eRecovery mode: long press the volume key + power button.
Do not need to connect the computer:
Recovery mode: long press the volume key + power button.
Upgrade mode: long press the volume key + volume key + power key.
When the phone is in these modes, long press the power button can restart the phone to exit the mode.
). I tried some different combos of microg/gapps/xposed and so, never working (the most I've got was microG telling me spoof signature was activated, but only once, all other times it was not possible). some GMSCore.apk seemed ok from source but it was not installing, when trying via TWRP, it said something about not signature so I needed spoofing it.
in one of the tries, i bootlooped my phone. The "erase all google apps" was my fault. I uninstalled 3 apps (titanium), and on reboot... boot loop prize! Since then, i've been trying to restore, at least to original mobile. But no luck, the only site i've found with firmware (1 full firm, 3 OTA updates) redirects to a huawei site that gives error for downloading them (although other files on same site works). I've tried looking for Y7 prime firmware also without success.
I even tried the eRecovery: boot phone on erecovery, connect to wifi, it updates. Bleh. Not for me. Found this statement on huawei site: http://consumer.huawei.com/cn/support/faqs/detail/?id=143646&name=华为畅享7 Plus -- basically, you cannot do it if you're root. Ok, unrooted phone (via twrp). Same error: "getting package info failed"
I've been trying to d'load rom from http://www.huaweirom.com/device/changxiang7plus/ but bad luck: files are too big and you should install CHINESE app (Baidu cloud). problem is it needs a user for Baidu, and it needs a chinese mobile card. I will insist and maybe i can get the ROM.
Bootloop
I have a chinese SIM card that luckily worked in my country and allow me to create a Baidu account. I downloaded the file and uploaded to my Google Drive account. The shared link was sent to you via PM. I never tested it, since my bootloops have been solved restoring a previous backup done via TWRP.
About the stock recovery, it wasn't working with the build B201. But after the upgrade to the build B210, I was also able to recover it OTA.
Have you tried to TWRP's Wipe factory reset?

FYI: I got your download. Thanks very much ^_^
Also, prior to watching your PM, I found a way for downloading the pan.baidu files without an account (I already had tampermonkey and an arab page had a script for so... just installed script -after reading what it does, of course-, visited page again, and hitting download just simply downloads it)
In any case, I managed to make a "fastboot flash system system.img" (with system.img extracted from update.app), amd mobile came up; needed to reconfigure it all, so i went again through all menus and so. But
WARNING - DON'T DO THIS
I activated the "Find phone" feature from huawei
WARNING - DON'T DO THIS
and that was a BIG mistake. I started again trying to setup google... and i broke it again (i think one of the "GMSInstallers out there I've tested makes an uninstall... but it uninstalls too much!). Mobile was booting, but it only showed a BLACK screen with navigation buttons, and pressing volume keys dropped down the volume menu (in chinese) and that was all. Okay, let's restore again... fastboot... WTF! "FAILED: Need to disable Phone finer first". But the f*** phone does not boot so I can not do that! nightmare begins. Again.
Solved, though. Steps:
- put mobile on fastboot mode (still unlocked, btw)
- Use HiSuite in PC for upgrading. It said "downloading"... uncompressiong...installing recovery...installing system...
- (yes, stock recovery, TWRP lost)
- Installation failed. WTF?!?!?!
- reset mobile; it starts usual boot animation, and then vibrates, and reboots automatically in stock recovery. I try to use it for download and setup upgrade. after download is complete, it fails to install
- Retry HiSuite. This time it ends telling "success". Reboot mobile again
- Again fails to boot. Again try the Wifi solution. This time, I reboot into recovery again, instead going to normal reboot. I do eery wipe I can. it works. Mobile boots again, as brand new mobile.
- I have version B201 with locked boot and stock recovery. But it works.
- There is an OTA ready; download it and install. First try fails (in recovery mode), second try works. Now I have the B210 version.
- I configure things again, and I go... let's install TWRP again in order to create backup (this time I won't forget to do so)
- First step: unlock bootloader again. Ok, it works. Oh, gosh... it makes a factory reset again (all configs done previously, lost).
- Configure all things again. I update all the apps ready to update. Now I can finish install of TWRP and make a full backup of mobile.
Now I'm going to install TWRP, make a full backup, and try to install only basic gapps in the way i've found in other webs: (make a google search for reference): "
Install, in this order (i have installed them through ADB), but do not run them: GoogleLoginService.apk, GoogleServicesFramework.apk, PrebuiltGmsCore.apk, GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk, GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk, Phonesky.apk

".
If not, I will try to get ROM for any of Huawei Y7 Prime TRT-AL53, TRT-L21A, or other TRT (for example TRT-LX1, TRT-LX3, Y7 2017, Nova Lite+, they all have 2Gb/16Gb but other specs are the same... and important thing is they are nougat 7.0/emui 5.1 as my last update -B210-, so google apps in that rom may be compatible)

I have it in a mega link, if you like them:
TRT-AL00B102_Android+7.0_EMUI+5.0.rar
I reccomend you using HiSuite, if you don't mind resetting mobile to original state (bye bye pics, videos, apps, and so on, unless you have them in cloud). On the other hand, I did not tested this with TWRP nor huawei's default recovery, but this update.zip is the file HiSuite has downloaded for trying to restore my mobile. You can dow many things with it:
+ Extract system.img and then make a fastboot flash sytem system.img (i did when mobile still had bootloader unlocked, and it worked, leaving my data live)
+ copy dload folder with update.app inside to the root folder of a microSD and put the microSD inside mobile; then try to boot into emergency mode (up+down) or in recovery and install it. I have not tried this method.
Good luck.
... I'm about to resign.
- Installed GApps the usual way (download from gapps, flash with TWRP, dalvik/cache wipe). Opening Play Store: "GMSCore not installed."
- Uninstalled all. Tried the "install only APKs approach" from mobile, in the sequence specified, it fails.
- Uninstalled all. Tried the "install only APKs approach" from ADB, in the sequence specified, it fails. But a light of hope appears: When trying to install (ADB install ....APK), an error appears regarding signature.
- Uninstall all. Using APK Easy tool i sign the critical APKs and try again the ADB install. They are installed. Reboot in recovery, cache/dalvik wipe. Reboot. Boo... failure.
- Uninstall all. Using APK Easy tool I sign ALL the APKs inside the GAPPs pico package and rebuild the ZIP file. TWRP flash it, no errors on screen, cache/dalvik wipe, reboot... boo. Failure. Now I have the same situation as @loconafita after installing gapps: Play store is there, I can run it but nothing happens (sometimes a brief whitescreen appears but then it comes back to previous screen). The same if I try to register a new google account.
I don't know what else to do. Maybe installing a different ROM with already installed google environment from a non-china version of mobile?
Note: In Twrp, when I try to browse over Data folder, it is encrypted. I don't think it is relevant, as GApps are in system, but... just in case.
Any idea?
EDIT: I've tried the magisk solution, but it gives an error 1 on installing; with same result: it does not complaint about GMSCore, but just doesnt't works. When trying to add a g-account, it briefly shows the "checking..." and it comes back to previous screen
I've tried with and without the signature spoofing (and the GAPPS zip is the original downloaded as is from opengapps). Screenshot of the error:

Nice point for Honor Holly 4 Plus (so new that it is still not in the honor support page, but it is selling already...), as it is EXACTLY the same model number as my Enjoy 7 Plus (TRT-AL00)... http://consumer.huawei.com/in/support/phones/honor-holly-4-plus/

TWRP Recovery:
1. Download Drivers and install them (Disable Signed Driver Enforcement)
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1T6MTq1upNt_yxrPD9MfOHR8vTOzRisvs
2. Download Oppo R9s Plus/F3 Plus Marshmallow Firmware (CPH1611EX_11_A.16_180106) and Extract it using Winrar/7-zip into a seperate FOLDER
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xo-J5Pe65-fXyJbysVrAZYQ1mocfl53s/view
2.1 Also Download Oppo A57 Firmware and extract it anywhere you like
https://drive.google.com/uc?id=0B_0XnEjFCVsPWndzSnp2YTFYSkU&export=download
3. Download TWRP Recovery - Keep the recovery img in the same folder as of extracted firmware folder and make sure recovery file name is set to "recovery.img"
Twrp 3.1.1-0 (Latest) - Material Theme and Inbuilt Super SU Root available for easy rooting BUT Chinese language
Download and Extract only recovery.img and place it under firmware folder. u can delete other files.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gkNNx2Ik6oRF-juBDNIilDUu31w6_oI_/view?usp=sharing
To change the chinese language to english please download and flash this zip But in English language you will not get Super SU Root option to root the device from built-in twrp. you have to download SU zip now. So root directly from chinese language and then flash the english language zip to be on safe and easy side
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=817550096634752414
Twrp 3.1.0-0 (old) (RECOMMENDED) -
Normal appearance of twrp and no inbuilt SU (sometimes it prompts to install SU, if you decline once, it won't prompt again) and totally English language. Most importantly you can flash opposite OTA updates (ozip) via this twrp
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qbobokagdgme2oa/AABQBtKTmbwChne9z1DaayHca?dl=0&preview=recovery.zip
4. Run the MsmDownloadTool from A57 Firmware folder and you will get Session Timeout error. just ignore it and close the software
4.1. Now run MsmDownloadTool from our F3 plus firmware folder and uncheck "Reset After Download"
5. Switch off ur Mobile and Hold Vol down + Vol Up simultaneously and Plug the usb to pc
5.1 After plugging to pc, open device manager and expand PORTS section and make sure the device is detected as "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM xx)". if not you have drivers issues!
6. Press F5, uncheck all options except Recovery and double click on Recovery option and select the recovery.img from firmware folder.
7. press Start and Flashing will be success (Green color message). press stop and unplug the usb
8. Press and hold Vol Up and Power Button and release them when it vibrates. NOW IMMEDIATELY after seeing oppo logo AGAIN PRESS Vol up + Power button to Power Off your device to prevent booting!!!! (If you fail to turn off your device, mobile will boot and will auto restore the stock recovery. so you will have to re-flash the twrp again)
9. Now press Vol Down + Power button to Enter into TWRP
BONUS - Stock Recovery & New OTA Update
Stock Recovery build: CPH1611EX_11_A.16_180106
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1u2Td1g93FwyAdPuKYNqz_iMHAYMpwrwJ
New Build Version: CPH1611EX_11_A.18_180413
Flash this zip via twrp. if it gives error 7 please ask in comment section
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1UA_DEjSQ4ESQO22VuvEpBsZhW9UepafY
else, flash this ozip from stock recovery
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1u2R65wYrLy2zqIhjww8adYWkqBjXgdq3

Screenshot:
1. Download and add extension (.zip)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/e35zeqf619...bar FIX?dl=0

3. Install XposedInstaller 3.1.1 apk AND Hookcoloros_1.1_2_new.apk
4. Open ColorsOs3.0 app and make sure all the options (toggles) in chinese are Enabled or leave it as deafult or if you know chinese you can choose what you want

Hi, i recently update my oppo F3 plus (CPH1613EX_11_A.18_180413 marshmallow), and i try to root it using this method, it's always boot on the stock recovery when i finish (i did step by step every single world you said).
I think that's a security renforcement about this version of colorOs, i wonder if there is a way ton downgrade to the last version without losing my data (lots of apps), because i did root it whit the version that i had once.
Thanks you
Re: So, i flashed my oppo with the msmtool that you put on your post (all images expect datauser partition), and changed the recovery image before the phone boots..... and it woorks perfectly now.
PS: dont upgrade to the version CPH1613EX_11_A.18_180413 if you want root your phone, it won't work.

NB: after downgrading , the first time, the phone boot directly and it was the new version (wich causes me problems) that was on it, even when i had flashing all the system

2. I have upgraded to a.18 build via ota 65mb and root worked. Tested with my own hands
3. Caution: if you dont CHECK userpartition in msmtool, after reboot it asks for Android password to proceed and we don't know that password. It's a checkmate. You need to wipe everything to boot
4. If you have patience please flash Magical 16.0 and test it. For me Wi-Fi is not turning on after flashing magisk.
5. I suggest you to use the twrp 3.1.0. bcoz the latest 3.1.1 does not flash oppo ota (.ozip)

Hello everyone, my name's SmallTarzan (@dotMiracle at Telegram), and I'm here to do it once again - to write yet another guide.
But, why am I doing this? There are two other guides already that explain the installation process well.
Well, I've gone through them, and the first one was not clear to me, I had to read it several times to properly understand the guide. I think that's, especially for new users, not helpful. The other one was written quite well, (shoutout to @madsponge26).
So, here I am, with my little bit to add to this, so far quite empty, sub-forum.
- an unlocked bootloader
- a TWRP recovery image
- a GSI image of your choice
- an Encryption Disabler - the current build of TWRP cannot decrypt your data
The process of unlocking the bootloader is the same on all Xiaomi devices. (Not counting the Android One ones.)
This process factory-resets your phone.
-
0. Open your phone's settings, go to About Phone at the top, find "MIUI version (For POCO)", and tap on it 7 times. (You should see a notification at the bottom, that you are now a developer.)
0.1 Go back, scroll down to Additional settings > Developer Options > Check "OEM unlocking" slider, (it may ask you for your password). Also, open "Mi Unlock status", agree to the permissions, and click on "Add account and device".
0.2 After this, you have to wait for 72 hours to unlock your phone. (Xiaomi Security Procedure)
-
1. Head over to Xiaomi Unlock Tool website, register, if you haven't yet, and download the tool.
2. Open the tool, accept the agreement, log in, and connect your device via USB-C cable to your computer.
3. Now, we'll need to reboot our device to fastboot: Turn off your device completely, hold down power button + volume down button at the same time, until you see a green logo of "fastboot".
4. The tool should now detect the device, press the Unlock button.
At the moment, there's only one TWRP recovery image available for this phone.
0. Currently, the TWRP cannot decrypt your data, make sure to back it up beforehand.
-
0.1 Download the Encryption disabler
0.2 Download ADB tools (Also, run the .exe, let it install all the required files, the driver from Google too.)
0.3 It's recommended to remove your screen-lock before doing this.
1. Reboot your device to fastboot again: Turn off your device completely, hold down power button + volume down button at the same time, until you see a green logo of "fastboot".
1.1 Connect your device to your computer.
2. Open your ADB folder, shift+right click on an empty space in the folder, choose open a Powershell/Command prompt window. (The folder should be located at C:/adb, or in the root of your system drive /adb.)
3. Now, put the recovery image you've downloaded in the ADB folder.
4. Type: fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.3.0-beryllium-20180831.img (You can, optionally, rename the file to recovery.img to make the typing easier for you.)
5. Once the process completes, hold down the power button + volume up button. (Your device may even restart twice, hold these buttons until you see the TWRP recovery screen.)
6. Allow modifications, if prompted.
7. Go to Install > select the DisableForceEncryption_Treble.zip > Swipe to flash it.
8. Once that's done, go back to the main screen (by using the on-screen buttons), Wipe > Advanced Wipe > Select Data > Swipe to wipe.
9. Go back to the main screen again, Reboot > Recovery.
(Android P for Poco F1. For those who didn't get the pun.)
0.1 Let's get the image we want first. Head over to the: Treble-Enabled Device Development, and choose the OS you'd like.
For the sake of this tutorial, and obviously, the header with Android P in it, we'll use one of the P GSI images. I, personally, like the ArrowOS.
0.2 Reboot into recovery, and connect the device to your computer.
1. Download the ArrowOS-9.0-OFFICIAL-GSI-A.zip to your computer. (Or any other .zip you'd like to install.)
2. Unzip the file with WinRAR or 7zip.
3. Copy the .img file to either your SD card, or your internal storage.
4. Install > On the bottom right "Install Image" > Find the .img file > Tap on it.
5. Select partition System/System Image > Swipe to flash.
6. This might not be necessary, but I highly recommend flashing the DisableForceEncryption_Treble.zip again.
6.1 If you don't need root, reboot the device. (Reboot > System)
0. You may, as well, reboot the device first, and do the setup, in order to avoid any potential issues.
1. Download the latest stable version of Magisk.
2. Reboot to recovery.
3. Install > Find Magisk-v17.2.zip (make sure you selected "Install zip" at the bottom right) > Find the .zip file > Swipe to Flash.
4. Again, it's recommended to flash the DisableForceEncryption_Treble.zip.
5. Reboot > System.
@madsponge26
@Shivam Kumar Jha - used his TWRP image in this guide.
@ganesh varma - used his ArrowOS GSI in this guide.
No sound/Broken sound/Low volume temporary fix: here.
For GApps, you can download them here. Flash them through the TWRP recovery.
Reserved.
EDIT: The guide works for both MIUI 10, and P custom GSI ROMs.
Also, search for GSI A images.
Thanks @SmallTarzan for the tutorial. I will try it.
Starred for later reference when I finally got this phone.
Sent from my Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 using XDA Labs
This is the first guide i actually understood. Thank you for that. I've one question though, the OS you suggested, is it stable for poco f1. I'm actually new to a treble device so i don't actually know how it works. Thank you once again for this guide.
Hello, thank you for your guide it's really very well explained with enough details that any newb can understand.
Btw, i have suggestion for your thread title, if you want you should rename your thread title to "[GUIDE]Install Any Android P GSIs In Your Poco"
Its just my suggestion cause i think it's better to follow the correct proforma:silly:
Anyway, have a nice day.

I have been there. Dont worry I have the solution. You'll have to reset the phone though.
First install the latest Android Q firmware. and start your device.
Im new here, dont know if we can paste external links. But go to google and type "Oneplus 7 Downgrade Firmware". In the results, you will see a link from "getdroidtips.com" Just follow the steps from there and it will give you your android Pie back.
One thing. following those steps, you are installing stock OS that is not from a verified source. Myself being a paranoid, I installed this unverified OS, but once you install Pie back, you can reinstall any Pie OS you want. including the stock from oneplus website, which is what i did.
Good luck! let me know if you are still stuck.

In my case, I was stuck too. So i did "fastboot boot recovery.img" tried both android Q and android pie revocery. (version 70 and 65) (editied versions by mauronofrio) one of them worked. I got into the recovery. then installed the android Q stock firmware zip file. Thing is, i dont know why, but once you are on android Q, your phone stops supporting android PIE. Since you were on android Q once, you have to go back there. only then follow the external website i linked.
Like the other guy said, you can stick to XDA and try the unbrick tools. but for me they didnt work. So i followed that website. then everything was fine. Ofcourse its fishy. but once you are back on pie, you can reinstall any pie rom you want.

@strongst the fastboot ROMs are only if you're able to see the fastboot screen, not the screen on my screenshot, right? With adb devices not seeing my device, will that work?
(Otherwise I'll look at the MSM download, seems like some Qualcomm drivers must be installed.)

Your screenshot is the fastboot screen. Stated with: fastboot
If your device is not recognized, maybe you should check your adb drivers etc.
TL;DR OMG. It took all day but I have my phone back (fingers crossed):
- last version of Pie
- system and apps like I had them a month ago (thanks to old backup)
- lost all local files that were stored on the device (photos etc)
Thank you @strongst and everyone who made the tools.
Mmm hey, if you ever see someone like me on the forum who asks if it's safe to downgrade from 10 to 9 using TWRP please rush to jump in and tell them no no no.
Before I completely forget and in case someone else has the same problem, here are the useful steps (I think) of this really long day. Not including all the intermediate steps of failed installs and reboots.
- the phone was no longer showing on the computer's attached devices so had to install some drivers. Drivers were found on mega via Step 1 / 1 of this xda post.
- installing the drivers was a bit of a journey, they're unsigned so you have to enable something in Windows, I used Step 2 of this article which was linked in the above post. After rebooting into that special mode you have to go into device manager, right-click the device which had a strange name, select the cab file, then MS will want to upgrade the driver
- no luck seeing the device using the MSM method (option 2 of strongst's post) so I focused on his option 1, the fastboot tools:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/one...lus-7-t3937478
- downloaded the 9.5.8-GM57BA
- it doesn't work out of the box after unzipping, you have to unzip the zips within the zip and copy the bat and img files to the main folder of the tools
- tried several of the batch files then tried the "if you are badly bricked i recommend to use flash-all-partitions.bat"
- still wouldn't boot, got the Chinese recovery mode screen (vol up down power), from there followed the advice to do English -> Wipe data and cache -> Erase everything
- soon after that I think, the phone booted
- went back to study the original rooting guide
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7/how-to/guide-unlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-root-t3954559
- in particular, enable dev options, then enable usb debugging, advanced boot
- followed steps 8—15 of that guide, for twrp I used the original one I had used
fastboot boot twrp-3.3.1-52-guacamole-unified.img
then flashed versions that I knew were safe
twrp-3.3.1-52-guacamole-unified-installer.zip
Magisk-v19.3.zip
- boot, initial setup, didn't bother filling the google account yet
- boot to recovery, twrp didn't open (stock recovery), adb fastboot twrp again then re-flash twrp and magisk
- still had the latest OOS Pie update, copied to phone storage
OnePlus7Oxygen_14.E.14_OTA_014_all_1907280716_7e28877dd39949e3.zip
- reboot phone, system update, local upgrade
- after reboot, boot to recovery (long press power then select), run twrp, restored old twrp backup from usb
- at that stage my system from a month ago was restored, except files, photos and probably a few other bits and pieces
That's all I have for today, hope no one else needs to follow these steps!
Thank you again to strongst and those you made the tools.

You used a nandroid backup which is what resulted in the brick. Nandroid backups do not backup firmware
Anyway try
fastboot --set-active=a
Then reboot and see if it boots
Or try
fastboot --set-active=b
If that doesn't work download twrp and flash it to the boot partition
fastboot flash boot whatever
Reboot and you should have twrp
Which twrp to flash? The one for Q firmware. It's obvious

Only Official MIUI ROMs may have ARB index.
Customs ROMs should not have ARB index.
If your device is Anti version: 2,
1) you can flash Rom with Anti Roll Back (ARB) index: 3, 4, 5, 6... etc. and the Anti version will become 3, 4, 5, 6... etc.
2) you can flash Rom with ARB index 2, and the Anti version will remain 2.
3) you CANNOT flash Rom with ARB index 1. Don't use that ROM in anyway, flashing through custom recovery will likely brick your phone.
4) If ARB index is 0, that means no ARB of that ROM. It will not check or change your device Anti version.
Make sure look at ARB index of MIUI ROM and Anti version of your phone. I don't have your phone. You decide to flash.
How to check ROM ARB index is written in the Source.

Q. Why not use Mi-Flash?
A. Because one may easily accidently Clean All and Lock with different region MIUI and brick the device.
Go Xiaomi Poco F3 / Xiaomi Mi 11X / Redmi K40 and see how many users brick their device using Mi-Flash.
Be sure to check ARB index of MIUI.
Q. Why flash MIUI with TWRP not Fastboot?
A. To check you actually had unlocked bootloader. Without unlocked bootloader, you shouldn't be able to boot into TWRP.
Q. Widevine issues?

Are you sure your phone is Global? Which country?
What version of MIUI?
How did you flash your boot image?
What partition did you flash the boot image into?
Were you using this one? If yes, flash the boot.img from here into your phone boot partition and see if your phone can boot up.
Boot your phone into Fastboot or TWRP. If you can, there's still hope. Do the step in above Unlock bootloader step 18.

How you going to patch boot image if you cannot get into MIUI and use Magisk to patch boot.img?
You will need another phone to do that though.
Safe way is to do a complete clean data format and flash MIUI Rom.
i have another phone to patch it but the problem is what version should be used for patching magisk 22 or the latest one? how to flash miui rom and can i now go back to miui 12.0.4?

Now my suggestion is to do a Clean complete Rom install. So all your data and files will be gone.
If you agree to clean all your data, follow above Clean Flash custom ROMs. Start from step 8. When you need to get into Fastboot, do it manually.
You don't need to download ArrowOS. Download MIUI 12.0.6.0 Recovery Rom and flash through TWRP.
Don't think of Magisk and MIUI 12.0.4.0 just yet. First get back to be able to see MIUI working.
Do I have to keep a SIM card in the phone throughout the entire unlock process? I would be taking it out of my actual daily driver phone so I'm just curious

You don't have to keep that SIM card after you done Unlock bootloader step 6.
You can remove your SIM card once step 6 was done. But you still need to have the number accessible to receive SMS if Mi-Account ask for verification.
Did you lose anything by unlocking bootloader? Like Widevine or something. Also, any special partition or file one should backup before unlocking (Not counting user data)? In Sony phones user have to backup TA partition or they will lose some features.
Thanks in advance

Loss from Unlocking bootloader is written in above tutorial.
Partition backup is generally not needed if you do things correctly. For now, even if you have full backup of qcn, maybe can't even restore.

Or find a Windows PC.
Or find USB drive and make a Windows To Go bootable disk. With this, you can boot from USB that contains Windows inside while not removing your Linux and MacOS.
Xiaomi Unlock tool (provided by Xiaomi officially) had only designed for Windows.
I have the latest arrow os on poco x3 pro now. But magisk failed to be installed.
It rebooted fastboot mode repeatedly after flashing magisk_patched_[random_strings].img.
If I flash original boot.img, it can be rebooted to system.
Below are some error in magisk install log I think:
cp: can't preserve ownership of 'busybox': Operation not permitted
cp: can't preserve ownership of 'magisk32': Operation not permitted
cp: can't preserve ownership of 'magisk64': Operation not permitted
cp: can't preserve ownership of 'magiskboot': Operation not permitted
cp: can't preserve ownership of 'magiskinit': Operation not permitted
This does not work due to a bad Java dependency. @
