P40 Pro with Latest FW Updates - Portrait Mode not working for selfie camera? - Huawei P40 Pro Questions & Answers

So weird issue with my new p40 pro. It’s on version 10.1.0.114, and all HMS apps latest update.
However when i open the selfie camera to take a portrait mode pic, it doesn’t do any background blur - UNLESS I go to effects and click on one of the other effects, such as lights or hearts etc.
Anyone else having the same? Have tried a factory reset but still same issue. Wasn’t doing this on Software 10.1.0.109 i think.

wanted to help you but my software is still at 10.1.0.109

I was reading somewhere about portait from front camera is without bokeh. Bokeh is only on rear. I did myself selfie and i dont have bokeh too from front camera. But im not sure on 100%

I've seen lots of reviews that post front camera pictures with bokeh effect. The ToF sensor makes this possible. So: bokeh is not only for the rear camera. Try the portrait mode option on the front camera.

Youre right. Tested it and bokeh is visible but really low
https://www.dxomark.com/huawei-p40-front-camera-review/
Check here. They said bokeh is visible but really low in front camera

I don't think so. No difference at all between portrait mode or photo mode without the effect filter turned on for selfie. Looking at the reviews there is noticeable bokeh on further objects. I'm not seeing that unless I turn on circles in effects for example.

This also happens on my Mate 20 Pro. I always have to choose an effect, otherwise, the background isn't blurred.

question, does those effect have a special purpose cause i do not notice it, i only notice blurs

Is burst mode broken?

Hi everyone,
I'm facing an issue with burst shooting.
When I burst-shoot photos in mid to low light conditions using the HTC stock camera app, I can see that most of the photos (except the first 3-5 photos) are filled with colorful noise all over them...
I'm using an EMEA HTC U11 128GB model with 1.27.401.5 software and camera app v9.20.9740975.
Am I the only one that facing this issue?
Please refer to the attachments to see the problem yourself.
Left image is the third burst-shot and looks OK.
Right image is the fifth burst-shot and looks very grainy (all the burst shots from the 5th and on look like that)
There is nothing wrong with it. Burst mode does not have the noise reduction algorithms which are available in hdr auto mode. Therefore these shots are perfectly normal in bad light conditions. Mine does the same.

When I capture burst shots on the ported google camera app, all photos are looking just fine without all that densed noise so I think you are wrong. You can try it yourself.
Something is very wrong with this feature on stock camera app on my side, I'm sure that it doesn't need to look like that at all.
I see a clear difference between the 3 to 5 first shots and all the rest, it's like they were taken by a different sensor!
I thought you were asking if your phone has a problem or not, so I answered according to what I understood.
It's how the stock camera app is. It needs some updates to fix these issues, there is nothing we can do about it except waiting.
I do believe that google camera is superior to stock app with good settings in almost every condition therefore I use google camera.

Thanks for the clarification.
Meanwhile I will continue to use burst captures only on Google Camera app.
Hope that HTC knows about this issue and trying to fix this as we speak. :fingers-crossed:

Disable HDR Auto (Stock Pixel Camera App)

I did some searches so I hope this has not been covered yet... but I am new to the pixel phones and I have heard how great they are... so I was excited to take some pictures of my kids and my cousin.. however most of them came out blurry... I thought maybe the skin that came on the phone may have been interfering but after removing it saw the same issue... so after doing some digging.
I found that the HDR mode slows the shutter speed and can cause action shots to suffer... so i've been turning off HDR mode... but I noticed that it always defaults to HDR Auto when i go into the camera app and I did not see a setting to turn this off...
QUESTION: Is there a way to change the default camera mode on the stock pixel camera app?
Thank you!

Very simple. Click on that hdr+ auto sign and choose hdr off after expansion
It's a stupid decision made by Google to make it default to HDR auto on the Pixel 1 phones. The nexus phones and as far as I know the Pixel 2 generation do not have this behavior. Do not know of any mods which have bit through this problem either.

could you explain this in more detail? thanks!
I turn off hdr+ and it stays off for me.
using arnovas gcam mod but iirc this was the behavior on stock.
so i wonder if that mod helps keep the changes.. mine still continues to default to HDR + Auto each time I go back into the camera..

My completely stock Pixel XL does this.
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
Same happens with the NightEnabled_GoogleCamera_6.1.013_cstark27.apk.
You can turn HDR off but when the app restarts the setting is AUTO.
This must be controlled by the phone I assume, not the app itself.
Has anyone fixed this?

How to turn off Auto Portrait mode in Honor Play

Hi Guys, I am using stock camera and I am recently upgraded to Android 9.0 The problem I am facing is whenever camera detect faces, it automatically goes into Portrait mode. This is annoying especially in night time when shooting under artificial lighting condition. While taking group photos, its unnecessarily blurs the background and edge detection is also not good.
I would like camera to take normal photos not Portrait. I have checked all settings but there is no way I can disable it. Really hoping I get my working GCAM as it was working on Android 8.2, till then have to use stock camera

Been there done that. If it is that simple then I would have not put that on forum :laugh::laugh:
You can turn off "bokeh" from here, maybe will be better?

Question Strange post processing bug when zooming on stock camera

Has anyone else also noticed photos come out with weird, massively boosted brightness and everything when taken with 2x zoom or higher on stock camera? Strange thing is even at 1.9x zoom everything is fine but 2x and beyond the photo is basically ruined because of this. Very annoying.
HDR and other enhancements are turned off, yet this occurs.
Doesn't happen on GCam. Any idea/solutions? Thanks
Tried here. No issue. And 2x zoom photo from stock cam was better than GCam 8.3 for me.
Didi you activate HDR and IA options in stock cam?
Yes they're all deactivated. No problem upto 1.9x zoom, but as soon as 2x zoom is engaged, there's a sudden although small change on viewfinder white balance. And final photos look extremely bright and noisy compared to 1.9x and below, as if some weird filter is put on. I've downgraded the camera but still happens.
Btw, bootloader is unlocked, not sure if that's got anything to do with it.
Its interesting if you don't have this problem. What's ur software channel and build number? Thanks
Without this bug, you'll generally get better zoomed images on stock camera because it'll use 64mp crop instead of only 16mp recognized by GCam. But this bug ruins it.
Unzoomed though, GCam's HDR+ is still the best.
Just discovered this thread.
Yes, I have the same problem. But it looks like the effect is not the same everytime. Maybe depending on light (indoors vs. outdoors)?
I noticed it happens when i zoom in in worse scenes. It could be that the automatic camera mode is overcompensating by cranking the iso way too high. Have you tried using the pro camera mode?

Yes, but I don't think pro mode uses 64mp crop like auto mode, just a crop of 16mp, which doesn't have much detail that's required during zoom. Also it's annoying trying to switch to pro mode everytime.

Question Is it normal that my camera flickers on videos when the lighting level changes ? Does it happen on you too ?

It's not happening because of the lamps above, it happens on natural lighting too. It happens when camera focuses to a new area where the lighting level is different. Is this a defect, or is it the same for everyone ?
Here are 2 example videos:
It's really weird because it doesn't happen on the photo mode or on other apps when i'm taking a video, it only happens in the camera app video section. It happens on auto fps mode too. I tried taking videos with other phones on the same condition, and they just focus normally without that weird flicker. Is this a software issue or is my camera defective ?
Would be happy if y'all can help, thank you.

Video Flickering at 60fps
Anyone else notice this? I did find a small thread on Samsung.com so not sure if its a hardware issue or if all of them have it. -...
forum.xda-developers.com
@hyelton check this, the exact same problem. Hope it's not a hardware problem and they fix it with an update
Yep same issue here. Glad I'm not the only one to notice the issue

Do you think it's a software problem ? Wish other people checked this and reported here too. Did you report it to Samsung ?
Does it happen if the camera is held in the proper orientation, i.e. landscape? Portrait mode should never be used for video capture. Hopefully in the future *all* phones will properly capture video in landscape mode regardless if the user holds it vertically or not!

What about a different camera app? I use Filmic Pro and have never seen this.
If I did, it would definitely raise cause for alarm!

Orientation and auto fps doesn't matter, it still happens. My post also says it doesn't happen on other apps.
I'm so happy to say that May update I just received (S908EXXU2AVDA) fixed this problem. Can you check if it's fixed for you too ? @hyelton I tried every specific condition that it flickered before and it doesn't flicker anymore, made me happy that it wasn't a hardware problem and they were aware of the issue.
Does it happen with adaptive refresh rate?
Because some apps flicker when this is turned on.

No, it was happening on 60fps video shooting, it's not about 120hz. It got fixed with the May update.
