Soft brick/bootloop after flashing TWRP + Magisk on OB5 - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

Trying to root following the guide here but after each time I flash TWRP on my computer the phone will bootloop and TWRP doesn't give me the option to decrypt my storage, meaning I have to do a full wipe to get out of the bootloop
I really appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Can you correct me if I'm wrong. So once I finish this process. I can go in and out of recovery with out computer. Also Then I can put apps directly into priv system with correct read and write, plus it will stick on reboots. Just wondering to .If this means I can flash custom kernals and roms with no worries other than normal issues. Thanks for your work.
Thank you so much for this!

Hey skullkid383, thankyou for your work on this!! Twrp flashed and works NP. But I cannot decrypt. Following steps, the step you mount before pushing in twrp adb does not work, no such folder. The push goes thru fine although the mount did not. Format data worked, I can see internal storage and move things to and from PC through tether. But when I reboot its sticks on moto screen. When I flash back to patched boot for magisk the is boots to an "decryption unsuccessful" msg and asks me to reset the phone endlessly. Any help pls?

1st make a backup just in case:
Ok here we go flash twrp and magisk beta then patched boot.img boot system get a file explorer with root permissions edit fstab.qcom find it here: /vendor/etc.
just replace current one with one I'm uploading
in guide to make easier to find wipe then u should be good of course flash magisk beta after u wipe as well
Hmm still decryption unsuccessful. About to reflash to stock. Sorry for the slow response. I have the next several hours free to test. I don't have an SD card, so i rooted the old way, using your patched boot, then used es file explorer to replace fstab, rebooted to confirm, and fstabs permissions had changed from rw r r to rw rw so it stuck. once I format data and internal becomes visible I move magisk over, flash then reboot and get dencryption unsuccessful. Also even flashing the recovery before formatting resulted in it being lost every reboot, only after format data it stuck.

Ok I am going to build new one in awhile my PC screen broke idk when but until then the link to Hannah twrp is down till I fix it
Ah man, so instead of fastboot flashing everything back to stock, I figured I'd just flash stock recovery back, after the decryption unsuccessful route. Flashed stock recovery, when it booted and asked me to reset the phone instead of going to twrp this time it went to the stock recovery image of a reset...phone booted, got to looking around and holy crap I'm decrypted! flashed your twrp and now I'm rooted with twrp and decrypted!! So maybe boot twrp the first time when formatting data and decrypting so when you boot and the device asks you to reset because of decryption failure it can use stock recovery to complete the process, then flash twrp for the finish? Your incredibly helpful man, again thankyou for all of your efforts and work on this!!
Still wanna fix twrp found a issue in formatting data I wanna fix but it shall take some time to get it done link is down til then cause it's something that needs fixed first before I put it back up

ROM Flashing Sequence

I've successfully unlocked bootloader, rooted (Magisk) and installed TWRP Blu Spark on my Oneplus 6.
The next step is to flash a custom ROM, but I keep running into the instruction "Flash Rom and TWRP Installer (blu_spark)", no matter what custom ROM I'm looking at.
Is it really necessary to reflash TWRP right after the ROM, or can I skip that step since Blu Spark TWRP is already on my phone?

You need to reflash TWRP everytime you flash a rom becuase recovery partition does not more exist and recovery is integrated in boot.img
1. Wipe everything except internal storage in TWRP.
2. Flash OOS 9.0.X in twrp and flash twrp zip
3. Now reboot to twrp and repeat step 2.
4. Now flash your rom + twrp zip and reboot to twrp.
5. Flash Gapps, magisk or any other zip you want.
You should be good now.

AH! Now that's the secret sauce--flashing 2x. The guides just indicate once, which is probably why when I restart, there's no OS and I get kicked back to TWRP. Thank you sir!! :good:
Can someone explain why I have to format internal data? My guess is the encryption key is changing. And I have no pin or password when I flash.

Your guess is correct. Encryption. It has nothing to do with FP, or code. It's Googles securety patches basically. If you don't want to format look in the decrypt guide and run in decrypted.

Help wanted: Device shutting off, rebooting to stock recovery when booted

Dear op7p xda community,
A few months ago, I rooted my device and flashed TWRP succesfully. After a stock OTA (still Pie), I lost both. Today, I wanted to re-root and re-flash TWRP. I used mauronofrio's Tool All In One 2.0.0.7 for this. I didn't flash TWRP, but booted it and used that to flash Magisk 19.4. Now, I wanted to see if the rooting process was successful, so I booted the OS. Unfortunately, once it boots and reaches the lockscreen, the "shutting off..." prompt immediately shows and reboots me into the stock recovery.
Edit: I now flashed TWRP after booting TWRP again and ran Magisk to root it again. Unfortunately, the problem persists (only now reboots to TWRP instead of stock recovery). Help is much appreciated!
Can someone help me get my phone to work again? Thanks a lot in advance!
Regards,
Wouty

Thank you for your reply. I am now on TWRP 3.3.1-4 (latest). I have tried to factory reset and wipe the phone in hopes of getting it to start properly again, but now the OS doesn't even boot and immediately reboots me into TWRP. I have now tried to flash 3 different stock, official ROMs, both International and Europe, like OnePlus7ProOxygen_21.O.14_OTA_014_all_1907281611. I used the recommended flashing instructions (flash ROM, flash TWRP, reboot TWRP, flash Magisk) But none of them boot at all. Only TWRP is usable now. I don't know what to do

When it reboots back to TWRP try to format data if that doesn't work then you need to use MSM tool.

Thanks for your reply. I had indeed wiped data, but that worsened the situation (not booting at all, instead of rebooting once booted). I have now tried this https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/rom-stock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-7-pro-t3931424 and it now seems to be booting (booting animation on-going for quite some time now, though). I will keep you posted. If it doesn't work, I'll look into the MSM tool. Thanks for the suggestion!

That is the latest official TWRP for this device. The official builds don't support Android 10, as decryption is not supported, so that may be part of your problem. The latest unofficial is -70, and I believe you need to use build -65 or later for Android 10.

Wipe is not the same as format. In TWRP, go to Wipe section, and you will see a button "Format data".
If you are now stuck on a boot loop, try booting into twrp and clearing cache. If you still can't boot, then i recommend downloading the full official rom and flashing it via fastboot. This will remove twrp and u'll end up with stock recovery and everything. Then after that follow proper instructions to install twrp first, then clear cache. Then magisk, and clear cache.

Trying to flash an official ROM via fastboot for a second time did indeed solve the problem for me. Now able to boot. Now backing up everything to make sure I'm able to solve these issues faster in the future. Thanks to all for your input!

URGENT: disabling magisk made OP6 stuck on bootloader, How to recover from it?

I had latest magisk (stable version) installed and tried to disable it from magisk manager->uninstall->restore images.
when i restarted the phone it stuck on bootloader screen.
I tried to got to twrp recovery mode and it's stuck on the flash screen.
Why would magisk manager put a button which is not working at all and bricks the phone? Please guide me what to do.

Maybe you did something wrong and this isn't Magisk fault ?
Go to twrp and wipe system and vendor DO NOT REBOOT, flash OOS zip and twrp again, and it shall work,
NOTE: you will NOT lose any files or data

I lost my twrp recovery

Hi all,
I just updated to 10.3 on my 7 pro plus. I know I really don't need twrp I do have the stock recovery but I like twrp. If I go thru the adb route, booting into twrp img and installing twrp zip, will it install into both slots? And will I lose root? Thanks for any help.
I'm not sure on the answer to your question but I used this guide to update and I didn't lose twrp.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/guide-bootloader-unlock-twrp-install-t3940368
Boot img, flash zip, flash magisk. Should give you twrp and keep root.
Thanks all. I just bit the bullet and tried flashing twrp.img from the twrp site to install the twrp.zip but the screen just stayed on fastboot so I rebooted into normal then attempted again with mauronofrio img and zips. ( Then I had to Magisk after I rebooted recovery.) It's all good. I hope this helps someone else as well.
