I need help buying a new phone. - General Questions and Answers

After I cracked my screen, I decided to start looking into different phones. I've seen many phones I like, but they all tend to have the same problem: XDA developers have not decided to toy with the devices! This is a huge problem for me, because, if I buy a phone, it MUST have a large developer-base. Otherwise, I get bored. So, if it's not too much to ask, what is the cheapest, not-ugly-looking phone I can get with the following specs, that has a decent amount of developers working on it?
RAM: 6+ GB
CPU: Octacore Snapdragon 8xx, or a different brand similar to that level
Storage: Either 128+ internal, or 32+ internal with expandable storage
Camera and GPU: Doesn't matter
OS: Android
Date: Doesn't matter
Any suggestion will be highly appreciated. Again, sorry if I'm asking for too much. If you think your current phone is worth it, please, suggest it. Thank you for reading.

Hello mate, I've been looking myself of late as the last of my back up Nexus devices has packed up.
From what I've browsed over the past few days I'd take a look at the OnePlus range as they seem to have picked up where the Nexus range left off with strong development for pretty much every device they've launched and decent specs for the price point which is what the nexus' were all about for me.
The other thing to bear in mind is that some custom ROM's now use Telegram as a base rather than here on XDA so a good search online may give you a bit more of an idea what's out there if you find something that fits your requirements/budget etc.
Hope that's some help

Thanks a lot! I'll be sure to check out Telegram. Knew about it for some time, but I never checked it out because I didn't know what it was for. Again, thanks for the help. Have a great day.

Which one to buy...

XDA ! If I were to buy a new phone, well actually PDA tbh, which one would it be?
I was thinking about Android 2.2, screen >= 3.7 inches preferebly with multi-touch capability, GPS, 1ghz CPU...
So generally I was thinking about Galaxy S, Nexus One...
What do you think XDA?
I think you should use google and youtube to get both detailed specs and then VIDEOS of all the phone you are interested in. We can give you our opinion all day long but it doesn't mean crap at the end of the day. YOU are going to be using the phone, not us.
This is a personal device we are talking about man. When it's all said and done, it's YOUR personal preference as to what you get. Do the research, buy what YOU want and you will be happy with it.

My personal choices would be HTC Desire Z or HTC Desire HD.

Right.
@Travikk
Almost all high-end phones have those specs u mentioned up there. My suggestion would be check out the hw/sw issues of each of the handset you have in mind. Decide whether you can do away with those issues. Some issues could be too critical for you to be ignored but not for someone else.

Thanks for your answer. Well yes, it is PERSONAL so it's going to be used by me, however what I'd like to get is maybe some experience from users using either of NO or GS. Nevertheless, you are right - it is personal choice more-less.

Why do you guys make fun of these questions?
They obviously have a legitament question which you can be answerd. No need to answer in the way you did.
First of all, The Gtab, in essence is a Malata zpad. And the T2 version was offered with 1gig of ram... If you did some reaserch you can see this. It is a legitament question.
I never took apart a GTab so I have no idea if its possible.
As far as the hard drive, you could have mentioned to them that it uses a flash based memory and may not be upgradable.
Was that so hard?

God's sentence!
Interesting
I'll take my gTablet apart later when I get home from work and let you know if the RAM is soldered onto the board or if you can swap it out. My guess is that it's soldered.
I've taken mine apart and it's not like a PC or netbook where you have SIMM slots to add / change RAM - it's a chip soldered onto the board.
With that in mind - it may not be impossible, but definitely not an easy task, imo.

SIMM slots, math co-processors and HS/Link. Ah, the good old days...
*facepalm*
First of all. 512MB of RAM, DIMM slots, etc... My head hurts.
Brief spark of flame... Onto the help.
In my brief stint at staples, I saw the release of the G Tablet. And VERY quickly saw its recall. Whether you are running the original or their "fixed" edition, common sense derives you should get out from under that thing and get a much better tablet (anything not made by ViewSonic would be a GREAT start).
Now, onto what I do know about upgrading Soldered RAM. In almost ALL cases pertaining to ram that is soldered to the motherboard, it is almost impossible to upgrade it in anyway. I say "almost" because there is one exception I know of to date.
The original Xbox (ohhhhh, i miss that big black brick!!!). It came stock with 64MB of internal RAM. Soldered to the board. But there were 4 extra "slots" to solder down additional RAM as long as it was RAM from the same generation board (as there were a total of 8 or 9 different editions of the xbox motherboard released) and it was done CAREFULLY.
I highly doubt that viewsonic had any need or want to allow for expandability in their horrible excuse for a tablet (seriously, I think the nook color is faster than that pile of garbage). So my general answer (thanks to process of elimination) is NO, it will not be possible.
Have a nice day!

I was talking to you. Now my original post may be a bit harsh, but I'm sick of hearing the complaints about Viewsonic's stock software. Everyone knows it sucks ass. That's why there's ROMs like Vegan-Tab. Try that out, see if it changes your mind about this tablet.

I bought one just to dabble around with since my HP laptop that I was using for web surfing died. tried the stock ROM, holy s***, what a pile. Put Vegan Tab on it and it is quite a nice tablet now. Of course I did my research, and decided that I don't need 1 GB RAM especially with the improved performance of the Vegan ROM. But, if I decide to go the internal GPS route, I might go for some RAM too while I'm in there if it is possible.
EDIT: Just noticed, I have been on here for almost a year, and this is my first post.

Hmmm. I was not talking about the software. I was talking about the sad excuse for original hardware. You might have gotten it AFTER the recall. But they RECALLED it for a reason. My store got 100 of them in at launch, and all of them got recalled within the following month. Why? The GPU's were built wrong. And I had a few customers flash custom ROMs and still had the same issues.
Thanks for the clarity, though. We were apparently talking about two different generations of tablets.
And either way. I hate everything Viewsonic makes. Spend another 50 bucks and get a better quality piece of hardware. I have never had anything but trouble with ANY of their products in the 7 years I have been in electronics retail.

I got one of the original units a month after it came out. When I got it, there were no issues whatsoever after flashing a custom ROM. It got sent back during one of my "dumbass wanna-be dev" moments (I tried to get Windows CE on it and flashed the wrong BCT)
My 2nd one had a busted screen
3rd a busted screen LED backlight
and now the 4th is on it's way out (it thinks it's charging all......the.....time)
All my units are before the recall.
(and Tapn'Tap is still one huge Pileo'**** )
Did not want to "Flame" you with my last response. But it seems that your history with the device is kind of shot. lol. There are just so many problems with the VS name, that I gave up on them YEARS ago when I first started selling Home Theater and Computer tech with their logos on it. *sigh*
And for the record, I have never used Tap'n'tap, unless it was on a demo unit (for the quick week we had them) in store at Staples! (lol)
AAAAAAAAAAAND... I am a n00b to ROM/Flashing/Etc... , but learn quick, and have absorbed A LOT just on the epic in the past two weeks since I got my phone (first smart phone ever). I really hope to step up and contribute to the community here and weigh in. This is one of those sites that will live for a VERY long time, unlike Xbox-HQ, which is the last site I was an administrator on.

Yeah, all these problems are starting to make me hate the G-Tablet
I wanted to blow up the tablet when I tried to use Tapn'Tap
And yes, this site will last a long time. At least I hope it does.
The memory as far as I can tell is in the FBGA package. Which means Fine Pitch Ball Grid Array. In otherwords you can't just get in there with a solding iron like a metcal, and a microscope and change it. It would require more expensive equipment to reflow the chip off and replace it with a 1 gb Ram package. What they use on the 1GB version is HYNIX H5PS1G83EFR-S6C.

**What phone should I buy next?** -- Not sure what device to buy? Ask here!

Hi everyone,
This thread is a continuation of this thread.
This is here so you can discuss what your next phone/tablet should be, if you're not sure what to pick.
Also, if you need advice as to which device is better than another, then feel free to ask those questions in here aswell.
This is an attempt to clear out all the similar threads being created around these forums.
*NOTE* I will be requesting thread maintenance as and when it is needed, to remove any SPAM comments
Excellent, I hope this will attract some discussion on new devices so new threads won't be opened.
I am not looking for a new phone right now, well maybe not depending on the outcome of HTC repairing my Sensation I guess. I sure hope to find out tomorrow. I think if I was going to get a replacement now I would probably get the SGS3 over the OneX. I really don't like the non-removable battery and maybe worse, no SD slot. I know why they did it for economic reasons but I am just not going to go that direction. Batteries do not last forever and their maximum charge level goes down over time. I want to be able to plug the SD into my computer and do a local backup. I also want to be able to get a bigger or faster SD if one comes out.
I am used to Sense but I am sure I could get used to Touchwiz as well, and I just read in the portal that ROM Cleaner works with the SGS3 now, as long as I can rid of the bloat I am content. I am sure that when my contract is done in a year there will be something newer and better out anyways.
I hope it does aswell. These forums definitely have too many of those threads being created
I think I'd choose the S3 aswell to be honest. Even though the One X is a powerful phone, the S3 can quite easily out perform it, as it can with most phones.
The only time I'd be looking to upgrade is when mine become redundant, which with having an S2 (which can still keep up with the newest flagship devices) and Xperia S, I won't need to upgrade for a while I don't think.

The galaxy tab 2 10.1 is a pretty good tablet but it just seems a bit bland to me. Mainly because there wasn't much difference from the original galaxy tab 10.1.
The Nexus 7 is a little beast of a tablet though, so that could always be an option for you.
But if you wanna stay with Galaxy, then it's probably best to wait for the Note 2 like you said.

To buy Nexus 7 or wait for Microsoft Surface?
The question is really if the Surface will be cheaper than I bet it'll be (under 500)
Nexus 7 seems like awesome tablet, but I think it might be too small for me , but im not really sure, since I never owned a tablet, and where I live I cant go and see any 7 inch tablets in store.
So what you thnik, should I go for Nexus 7 or wait? Or better yet, is there more choices for cheap and quality android tablets?
7 inch tablets seem like an odd size to me. Not really big enough for the things I would use it for to replace a laptop, but too big to replace my phone.

You are totally right, but now to think other way: its easier to carry 7inch than 10inch tablet.
Also forgot to mention I have some problems with eyesight so bigger tablet might also be better choice, But the nexus 7 price really seems like a good selling point. But if the Surface RT will be 200, then I probably going to miss my money too much.

It depends on when you're going to be using it mainly. If you're out quite a lot of the time, then the Nexus 7 is probably going to be the easiest choice, because of carrying it around.
But if you're more often at home, then the Surface might be better for you because it's a 10.6 inch screen so it makes it easier for your eyes.
Another thing to consider is the operating systems. The Surface will be running Windows 8, but I'm not too sure what that's like to use.
And the Nexus is on Jellybean, it's definitely going to get the upgrade to Key Lime Pie and possibly the update after that aswell.
So, even though the Surface does seem like it'll be right up there with the best of them, I'd suggest the Nexus to be honest. It just seems like the best choice overall.

I might get the nexus 7, if I dont like it I could probably sell it here in Estonia for the money I would get it (from US.).
Also should be mentioned that I dont own a laptop or anything else to carry around, at home I use my desktop, and I dont go out too often, but I think nexus would be nice in school and so on.
Also all these old awesome titles (gta 3, max payne) are made for android these days which I really loved back then, are better to play on 7 inch than 10.6 (better to hold, easier) .
So I think i go for nexus 7, but I hope that I dont get the broken one (from first or second branch), because I couldnt take it back.
I will buy a tablet but I am not sure which. Note 10.1 or Nexus 7? I think nexus 7 is too small as a 4.7 inch phone user but not sure about it. But I want to have pure google experience. Is nexus 7 really that small or not? I'm stuck
I thought about bying the Xiaomi M2 or the Galaxy nexus and i cant pick it since the M2 has better hardware and it is smaller but only MIUI can be installed on him unlike the galaxy nexus which has a huge variety of roms.
In my opinion, a 7 inch tablet is the best for portability and viewing. It feels comfortable to hold with one hand, but it comes down to your personal preference really.

One of my friends asked me for suggestion...
His budget isn't all that big, with a max cap of 15000 inr (~275 usd, though the indian customs are notorious for high taxes; the s3 costs around 38000 inr = 690 usd; so hope you get the picture)
Mainly looking for a low budget android, maybe even a mid end device...
All he needs is "the latest android" on which he can play games...but I know about the quirks that come with a low end phone: inadequate internal mem, low cpu & gpu, lack of official upgrade support...the list kinda goes on...
I have zeroed on sony's live with walkman, mainly for the fact that it gives the most value for money...
The more the money saved + better features; the more likely choice it would be...
If anybody has better suggestions, please share them...
Brands present in india: Samsung, Htc, Sony, Micromax and smaller presence of Motorola and Huawei...
There is no contract system available here, neither are "subsidies" or such...

Xperia U perhaps? Should get the 4.0 soon (if already has'nt)
I think it depends on your budget.
S3
My next phone is going to be the S3!! I wish Samsung would stop making the phone bigger though...when I first got the S2 I got made fun of because how big it is although it's very thin...I don't see what's the point of going bigger...

Looking for the best BUDGET tablet

I want the BEST deal possible
I want the most bang for my buck
perhaps an up and coming release
or the most popular tablet already available.
I have nothing but time and the first tablet i bought was an ipad and it was super cheap due to an amazing deal.
I've done a lot of research of my own and this is my final step, I'm hoping the -always smart- people on here can help a brother out.

Nexus 7 by a billion gazillion miles. 1080p screen, serviceable dual cameras, immediate updates, quad core GPU, stereo speakers.
Or maybe the N10? The new one isn't here yet, so you should prolly wait a little.
Currently, nobody can beat Apple at tablets, though. Just my opinion. Seems there are more apps that are optimized for the large screen.

For $230, you can't expect something like that to be future-proofed. What you could do is sell your old device in an emerging market, where the demand is high and supply low, and use that extra cash to upgrade frequently. But the N7 def has more to it than just the hardware. It is as close as you can get to the stock experience, so there is very little lag. And there is longer support by Google. It gets a lot of dev attention. It is also very cheap.
Seriously, if you want a good deal, the N7 is the way to go.

You could wait for the Nexus 10. But yeah, there really isn't much selection as far as budget Android tablets (or any Android tablets) go.

Uhhh... you may want to think this through. While you do have a limited return period, it is best to read a good amount before investing in anything. Unless you have money to burn...

I normally do tons of research, but i think this is an easy call right here.

Stick with the GS5 or go with the OPO

I have an AT&T Galaxy S5 right now, but the One Plus One seems to be the better phone. Should I make the switch? Or stick with what I have?

Personally I'll never but a mobile Samsung device again, so were I to advise you I'd drop the S5 and get the One. It's cheaper, won't have a locked bootloader and should have tremendous community support due to the affordability and CM relationship.
Of course, the last part is contingent on overall availability - hopefully that won't be an issue.
sell it and use the money to buy two OPO if you can get your hands on them. lol
Since you're on XDA we'll assume rooting and customization are important to you which pretty much makes the AT&T version of the Galaxy S5 a non-starter.
The OPO is closer in size to the Galaxy Note 3 than the S5 though, so you'd need to decide if the size is right for you to begin with.
GS5 has a great camera so that might factor into your decision too. We have yet to see any head to head image comparisons between GS5 and OPO but it's my understanding the OPO uses the same camera as the Oppo Find 7/a. I *have* seen a head to head comparison between the Find 7a and GS5 and the Samsung images were better, so it's reasonable to assume similar results may be seen with the OPO. I look forward to seeing a good shootout comparison, hopefully soon.
Since you're on AT&T it's worth noting that OPO only supports two out of AT&T's four LTE bands. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I assume the AT&T GS5 supports all 4 AT&T LTE bands, meaning it may perform better on AT&T's network in high traffic areas where those other two LTE bands are in use.
If you're eligible for a subsidized phone on contract from AT&T then the GS5 is cheaper. Otherwise at full price the OPO is cheaper.
Finally, OPO has no SD card expansion slot, the battery is not removable and it's not waterproof, so the GS5 wins in those categories too (except the lack a 32GB version of the GS5 is lame despite the SD card slot). The workarounds are to buy the 64GB OPO variant, carry a portable charger and don't drop it in the toilet. Probably not deal-breakers but still worth noting.
I don't understand
Please help me understand something.
It's not just this thread, but I see multiple threads on XDA and several other sites.
"should I keep X, or switch to Y".
Does your current device work, are you happy with it, does it do everything you like?
Why would you switch then, other than fill a fixation with something newer.
I see it all the time. People replace their phones, cars, houses, because something new
comes along or "everyone" is doing it. I guess I'm old...I just don't get the narcissistic need
to be getting the newest anything all the time. Is ANYONE happy anymore?

We're not meant to understand it. You and I grew up in a different time when we learned to be content with what we had and make the most of it. We drank a simpler KoolAid.
Over the last 20+ years advertising has zombified the millenials to believe that a new version of X is what is required to be happy. You see it everywhere these days. 4 year old car? So sorry you almost paid it off, come trade it in so we can bilk your for a new one. Cell phone almost 6 months old? Rent a new one from us at a premium price!
It's the new oppression/slavery. Keep you in debt buying smartphones so that you never look up to see that they've taken your rights, your savings, away. The TV industry is now attempting to follow suite with cellphones. HD4K is here and HD8K is already being touted attempting to get folks to dump their current 1080p displays.
For once, I'm glad to be older.

My current device works, but not at 100%. The USB port no longer functions so I can't hook it up to my computer. Also, my battery is giving out (dies in half a day). Otherwise, it does everything I like. So I'm shopping around for a new device. I'm just dropping by to see if it's a reasonable upgrade, or if I should wait for something else.
So people's decision to upgrade isn't always simply fixated on something being newer. People get new houses when their family outgrows their older one. People often buy themselves a nicer car when they can finally afford one after getting a better job. Plenty of reasons why people do the things they do. You shouldn't judge them for it, even if it's simply because they want something newer.
