Web Developer interested in Android information - Other Tools & General Discussion

I am interested in learning to build Android Apps but I am a little scared to test the waters.
e.g. When developing an Uber App in Android, do you have to know all Android Operating Systems to be able to create these Applications or can these be created with the same Programming Principles?
Any help would be great thanks.

[Q] Please help Developing an Android Map App for a company as part of a project

Hi I'm Mark a Web development student in my final year.
Basically for my final project were working with an external company that want stuff done for free or very close, this includes an android app.
The app im going to try to make will be private for the company to give out locations using google maps and gps/geolocation.
The app will be distributed through the site we are developing to certain users and not featured on the marketplace due to privacy issues.
Problem is I've never developed for android or any mobile platforms and have an extremely basic knowledge of Java but i mainly develop for web and windows using c# so naturally I have a few questions for people with experience in android development.
1. Is it possible to have the app powered by google maps?
2. Any suggestions of how one user will be able to upload gps coordinates to this app?
3. Rough idea of how long it would take e.g. few hours, few days, few months?
4. Overall is it possible, any problems I might run into?
5 Any Advice, tips,or better suggestions?
Thanks a lot for reading this far, any answers or help would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] Where to begin with developing android apps

In school I learned c#, and made a Java course on youtube (programming methodology, Stanford).
Now I'd be interested in anything that would get me started on the way of creating android apps.
A video course would be welcomed the most, but I'd apprericate any books that you found useful, or even sites/blogs.

Topping Engine - Middleware for developing android and ios applications. One layout one code for both platforms.

I have recently been developing a middleware library that helps you to develop mobile applications, faster and easier than before. Finally it is live at https://topping.dev . This project started in 2012 to reduce time developing applications on android and ios platforms by creating a topping layer on mobile operating systems. All you need to know is how Android layout XML works and basic Lua or Kotlin knowledge. After developing it from time to time, I decided to make it open source. The project is in beta stage but most of the functions work. With the help of the open source community, I hope it will expand and grow and become the best of its kind. Also there are WPF and Web proof of concepts at github. http://github.com/topping-dev

Android Emulators Megathread

Hi all, first time poster here. Microsoft just announced that Windows 11 will be able to run Android apps natively which will have potentially huge impact on Android Emulators running on Windows. Given the potential additional interest in running Android apps on Windows (and Macs), I thought I'd start a thread here.
I have seen threads on different Android Emulators here sporadically but they are not very active so I thought I'd start a megathread consolidating info/discussions related to emulators and to bring in discussions from gamers, Android/PC enthusiasts and (hopefully) Android developers so that we can do more advanced troubleshooting/discussions.
Very often when an app doesn't work on Android Emulators, we are pretty much at the mercy of Android Emulator developers whether they can (or will) fix it or not, perhaps with our combined knowledge we will be able to get closer to the root cause which may eventually lead to a fix or workarounds.
Anyways, just kicking this off, what I envision for this thread is for people to discuss anything to do with Android Emulators, be it issues running certain apps, configuration recommendations, emulator recommendations and even rolling your own.
I've been running Android Emulators for the past few years on both Mac and PC and it's my dream to be able to start an Open Source Android Emulator project, so perhaps this is the place where I can get interested parties.
In the next little while I will also try to edit this post to include more information/resources on emulators and to get things organized. Please let me know your thoughts on this and I look forward to hearing from you.
For those of you on Discord, feel free to join for live discussions on related topics, thanks!

Hi there, thanks for your response!
When I talk about Open Source Android Emulators, I mean the full stack, not just the virtualization piece. For instance I wouldn't consider something like BlueStacks "open source", even though it uses Open Source components like VirtualBox. We'd want to be able to build something from the ground up that uses all Open Source components. A lot of these Android Emulators use some Open Source components but some parts (like graphics acceleration) are closed source. Because of that, the only people who can fix bugs when game updates and stop working are the developers. If it was an Open Source project, we'd have more hands to be able to help out and users can fix their own issues if they are capable. And yes, qemu was used by early Android Emulators as well as the official Google Android Emulator, however it seems most current Android Emulators have since shifted to using VirtualBox.

Getting started in coding

So I have always been interested in coding, and with my recent head unit issues, I'd love to be able to tweak android and android auto software or even develop apps in the future. There was a time that I was good with html but I didn't really delve into other aspects of programming.
What would be a reasonably good path for me as a tinkerer to develop the skills necessarily to eventually create apps, tweak android stuff, and maybe even write new software for that platform?
Android apps are written in Java and/or Kotlin. Hence learn one of these programmimg langiuages.
Use Google's Android emulator to start with.
Thanks for the compass bearing bud
