Hi Guys,
Which is the best and stable camera app to be used for portrait mode in the S7? And can it be used with the front camera? I tried many but they all crash every now and then.
Thanks
You can use selective focus mode on stock camera app. It produces portrait-like photos (back camera only) but the downside to me is the size. The image will be about 20MB in size but if you edit it again using any photo editor app it will decrease. IMO the stock selective focus mode is better and faster than lens blur on Google Camera.

Yes it is good but like 90% of the times it will say that subject not detected. And the size for me is normal like 4-5mb per photo. Any other modded/ported camera app for the S7 for this purpose? And can it be used with the front camera?
You can check the @miniuser123 version of the Gcam app. I think it's the best (far away) portrait mode for us.
Better than our cam but still don't work the face cam.
If you wanna try, here's the link:

Thanks. This is what I have selected-
Model: Nexus 6 Shamu Moto
Portrait mode on all models: on
camera.af.debug.show: where is this setting?
camera.faceboxes: where is this setting?
The app crashes if I select the first icon in the app.

Set somethings:
- Don't change the HDR parameters. Set it to default.
- Unmark the "Use Nexus6 HDRPlus Auto"
- Mark "Compress RAW (*.DNG)
- Mark "Portrait Mode in all models"
- Unmark "Smartburst Enable"
The "camera.af.debug.show" and the "camera.faceboxes" are in Settings>Developer Settings. But these are optional.
Hope I helped
*EDIT - check and follow the thread (here in XDA) about HDR+ for S7. The better place for try new cam apps and discuss about that

Unfortunately the HDR+ is not good at all, but some versions you can get more of this feature.

This is a problem with the image processing (the heating and the battery drain). Some people says the cause is the app use all cores for processing the image (HDR+ and portrait)
Anyway, there's a new version with front camera working with portrait.

Thanks!! The settings is a bit different but I only changed the model to Nexus 6 and everything is ok. It's still crashed when I switch back to rear camera from front cam while in portrait mode. But portrait mode is still only available on the rear camera, right? Because it's not working on front cam.
Oh right, actually the heating was only a couple times after installing. Now it doesn't heat anymore.

Oh, no. This version that I sent works the rear and front camera in portrait mode. Using without the portrait the front camera is terrible.
And even at portrait, the front camera has a bug with high exposure changing the color to something like pink exposure.
I attached my settings. Remember to close and reopen the app totally for apply.

Changing the model to pixel 2 xl did enable portrait on the selfie but yeah it got some pink on high exposure. But the result was still great. Without portrait the front cam is blurry and the edge was too much sharpened. It's terrible.
Also, is HDR+ enabled by default? There's no HDR+ setting on the top row but there's some sort of delay (like when applying HDR) when I take pictures so I thought it's still there. The photos taken with rear camera is also better now I guess.

Yeah, this version is near to perfect.
I never, anymore, take pics o' people without rear portrait camera -hahaha
The delay is borring but minimal. You can take a lot of pics and check them later. You don't need to wait between the shots.
If you wanna HDR+ setting, go to: settings>advance>check the option: manual HDR+ control (my app isn't in english, but is something like that)
*You can't increase the HDR+ parameters
**Just a obs- my app crashed sometimes at older version (I didn't try the newer properly) and my app didn't take pics. If it happen, just "force stop" and it back.

Btw i was checking on the source thread and found that there's a newer version uploaded early today. This version fixed the pink stain and the HDR menu is back on the top row. I think this is much stable since there's no heating or crashing at all.

Yes there is
HI, I've a CLT-L29C432 with FW 8.1.0.156(patch3)
I've noticed that now, but in the photo mode only, there is a powerful HDR on by default, and cannot be selected if on or off, the only way to have a "clean" shot, without HDR, is to use the PRO mode.
It works only with main sensor and not with Front camera nor with the tele-zoom camera.
This photo+HDR mode maybe is available by the last firmware update (156-p3) because I never noticed it before.
I don't know if this feature is known or not, so I decided to open a specific thread about this.
I've done some shots to demonstrate the differences
the darker shot is in pro mode ( the nearer light condition to real vision )
the lighter shot is in photo mode (+HDR hidden future) and you can see is a little more blurry than others
the in between shot is in Night mode , less blurry but also with less light and a better color handling.
there is also a shot in HDR mode from other presets page that has less light but it's sharper than photo mode + HDR
I think that this powerful feature is a little ruined in night shots during the camera status " don't move - sharpening your photo" message ( that also usually causes blurry photos also without HDR)
Other shots indoor scene
Are you sure it's not the AI that kicks in and the second picture is not using the night mode as it was triggered as I said by the AI?
Its not some hidden hdr feature. The iso now jumps all the way to 1lakh in low light hence producing very bright pics.
This happens only with 10mp camera (never with 40mp camera).
This is because the 10mp camera also use the black and white sensor to retrieve more informations and give you a boosted photo.
I don't like most of the time these photos.
You can't disable this!

Yes : I forgot to say that it works only in 10mp (like almost everything)
Photo mode is intended for a sort of point and shot if you don't want this you can use pro mode that has no AI or HDR and you can take very nice auto pictures or twick them manually.... And 40mp as well
PRO mode should be the default mode for an advanced phographer.
What I think that huawei should only let the user be able to set by default the preferred mode ... But not eliminate this hdr future or AI at all

In .156 patch 3 firmware, you loose the 4d predictive focus. The .157 firmware coming soon but don't fix the 4d predictive focus according to Huawei customer service.
Hehe, guys, it's there since .131.... Huawei is constantly working on it, the camera got lots of improvements since the release. Yes, they mess up the 4D focus from time to time but it's working great in the Android 9 Beta. So stay tuned!

Wow, I have speak with other guy in this forum and for him also not working. It is very interesting because few people complaining regarding this issue on. 156 firmware. You are very lucky then. ?
This is actually not HDR although the results look similar. What you are looking at here is the full effect of pixel binning in action, where four pixels are stacked together into one which in effect is boosting the dynamic range of the sensor by some clever algorithms. The end result is that highlights are rescued from being overblown and shadows are also rescued from being too dark. You end up with a evenly balanced exposure which has the same look and feel of a HDR. But this is pixel binning as it should work.

Bump. ?Im also curious about Gcam on M.O.V, anybody tried already?
The Play store says it's not compatible.
Maybe there's a way around that.
Not sure what it would add compared to the Motorola one or OpenCamera to be honest (I used it on my Nexus 5 until last week).
I've tried a few modded ones but none of them worked fine so far.
Yeah, i'v tried 3-4 versions for exynos, and no luck. App's starts properly, I see the user interface, but no view from camera, just black screen. May it need some app settings changes?

I don't think the two can be compared at this stage. The porting shoots at only 12Mpx and not at full 48Mpx as the stock camera.
Maybe in future releases...

It may be that the gcam doesn't take use of the quad pixel technology like stock cam do, and therefore won't see it as 48mp.
Stock can doesn't actually save the pictures in 48mp but at 12mp (12x4=48) when it's sampled down, but ofc with better details and light.

But serious question - Do we really need Google camera? By 'we', I mean casual users. Not hardcore shutterbugs.

YES we really do need GCam. Try using any other Portrait mode shots with any other camera (flagship or not) and tell me if the processing comes anywhere near as good.
I've tried Gcam on many phones and the quality is consistent enough to justify the need on this device.
Hopefully someone can find a working gcam, or ask the appropriate modders if they can port one for us.
try this : MGC_6.1.021_BSG_Arnova-TlnNeun_Urnyx05-v4.3.apk
and use this configs : mackytravel-nightsight.xml
(search from google)
and you can try and find the best correct setting (Exposure compensation,Libs,Adjust saturation,.............)for good quality picture by yourself
(How to use config : Create a folder name Gcam inside that folder create a new folder name Configs and download below’s config and paste it, then open gcam and tap the black area in viewfinder and select this config then restore.)
I was looking for a working Gcam with astrography on my One Plus 7 pro and i tried more than 30 different apks by different modders all had issues with astro and i accidentally discovered that the version PMGC_7.2.014_Relesed_V1.apk from Parrot043 with working astrography. Hmm, it must be some combination of Bliss Rom/kernel that is enabling a different menu and front Portrait. I'm on stock 10.3.0.
I read in another thread that the GCam app needs to be a system app (in the system/priv-app folder) to enable access to the aux cameras. I tried moving the app folder there, but it just moved itself back after a reboot. I'm seeing if I can move the app some other way. Not sure if any of those Magisk modules from your screenshot would help with the app settings.
Edit: successfully converted the app to a system app using the App Systemizer Magisk module. Made no difference for the settings (still don't see options for aux cams). Oh well, must be a rom/kernel issue. Thanks for you help!

Thanks for this. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for the Parrot version, only the Urnyx. The colors on the Parrot version are pretty bad, and the selfie cam won't work (3/4 cameras not working) so I've switched to Urnyx, and have the tele/zoom/selfie lenses all working now, but lost Astrophotography. Oh well, I give up.

For me, the colors on the PMGC 7.2.014 were terrible (initially pale, unsaturated; improved a bit with saturation settings) but I just couldn't get the white balance right.
I've attached 4 pics: Stock 10.3.0 cam (default), Stock 10.3.0 HDR forced on, Urnyx05 7.2.010 (1.6), and PMGC 7.2.014.
(Note: It seems you can get different settings based on your rom/kernel, so your results may vary.)
I preferred the Urnyx05 7.2.010 (HDR always on) slightly over Stock with HDR (though, depending on how you like your shadows, you might even prefer stock). The color accuracy between these 2 was the same. Stock without HDR didn't handle shadows well, and PMGC needs settings adjusted before it's functional.

The above review and attached screenshots refer to the main camera. I just realized you were asking about the aux cams. I compared the Stock HDR vs Urnyx Gcam HDR (I suspect the PMGC will have similar results as the Urnyx after adjusting the color/saturation settings):
Telephoto (Zoom): Stock starts "3x", Urnyx Gcam is labelled "2x" but is showing only a slightly wider field of view than stock. Stock appears to be zooming/cropping some of the native image. Color accuracy is about the same. Default settings in Gcam make the picture undersaturated (like PMGC), but given the Lib Patcher settings, contrast & saturation can be boosted to match stock. About a tie here once you play with the Gcam settings.
Wide: Once again, Stock cam crops/zooms into the native image more, so the Urnyx Gcam has a wider image. However, Urnyx Gcam makes no lens correction and the edges are pretty distorted. The colors on this lens showed the most difference, with the stock being slightly more saturated with a much better HDR result, while the Urnyx Gcam is lighter/less saturated (likely adjustable in GCam's additional settings), but not a great HDR output. Stock cam wins here, with the significantly better HDR and lens correction. (Note: attached images are cropped for privacy; upper-right ~75% of the image is shown)

7.2. astro working and everything else
Hi all,
Wondering if anyone has suggestions fixes for the problem shown in the two attached pictures. They were both taken with seconds of each other on GCam Wichaya V 1.6.
The first photo is crisp and bright, while the second is washed out and dark. Any have any suggestions, whether they be GCam specific or relating to photography more generally?
Cheers,
H
Totally normal because camera picks most of lights in that display and not around it.

I know GCam is generally considered superior to the stock A52 camera app. Is there any setting that might help with the difference in tone perhaps auto white balance on the quick settings menu or something other setting in the main settings menu?

Stock cam is a LOT better on a52, also use a good gcam port with the proper config file. I recommend greatness gcam or bsg.
