[SOLVED] Performance issues with February update? - Google Pixel 3a Questions & Answers

Is anyone else having performance issues after the February update? I've tried both stock and custom ROM's, flashing factory images, etc. and my device has become almost unusable since the February update. Scrolling will cause 30 second+ lags, opening apps takes at least 10 seconds. Snapchat and apps that use Google play services seem the worst, although all apps suffer.
Not necessarily looking for a fix, moreso looking for confirmation that this isn't an issue with my device. (unlikely, all cpu cores are active and thermals are normal)

The Google Play services apps being the worst sounds like a symptom of a known issue with Magisk hide when modules with overlays in /product/overlay and/or /vendor/overlay.
Do you have QuickSwitch installed with a different recents provider set or another module that has overlays in /product or /vendor that didn't previously exist on the device?
Logs might show something similar to the attached image.
If so, the fix for now is disabling Magisk hide on com.google.android.gms.

QuickSwitch has triggered this issue so I'm very good at diagnosing it lol.
It's really weird though, I don't get the lag myself, I can however use the top command and sure enough gms will be maxing out CPU and ram, however I don't think that's accurate so I'm super confused about it in that reguard.
Sent from my Pixel 3a XL using XDA Labs

Same issue on mi a1, mi a2 and nokia 6.1. They all went bollocks after a few monthly updates. Perhaps the 4 gigs of ram and qualqomm's medicore cpu lineup just isn't for android anymore.

Issue with apps not running in background - looking for advice

Hi All,
So it appears that after installing 4.4.2 I cannot seem to get Google Play Music or Pandora to run without leaving the app open and in the foreground. I'm not sure if there is a function that has to be enabled to do this in KK, or if it is some mod I did long ago to force kill apps that are in background.
I understand this is a bit of a goose chase, but I was hoping people would be able to suggest things to check to see whether we can fix this problem of mine together or not.
- Could it be something in an Xposed Module? XBlast, GravityBox, etc. have a setting for killing background processes?
- Could it be something in the KitKat system itself that has to be enabled / disabled?
- Could it be the new settings within the apps themselves?
- Could it be a third party app (that I may have installed and am unaware of) killing background processes?
- Other ideas?
Apps run when phone screen is off, and when phone is locked, but if I go into a different app the music stops cold.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!
Ah yes, this is the curse of Android 4.3+. I read in the Greenify settings that in 4.3 or greater, Android killed off an exploit that allowed apps to increase their priority to stay in memory. In turn, running apps can be killed off when memory is low. Horrible. I've had it across all ROMs and stock as well. I've done as much research as humanly possible to subvert this.
I'm by no means an expert on Android. I have really limited knowledge of how it runs. But I think that information in accurate, because my own personal solutions seem to support it.
Generally what I have done is keep as few running processes as possible. This means no live wallpaper, Greenifying as much as I can, and clearing out any recents frequently. If this fails, I have to restart and things get back on track again.
Go into your developer settings and look at the process stats. If it says memory is critical, you'll need to start trimming down your background processes. I don't quite exactly know how to interpret all the data that is present there, but "critical" seems clear cut at least.
If anyone has more information on this, please add to the convo!
Thanks bud. On the plus side at least I know it's nothing I've done to a setting here or there (other than going ahead and installing KK on the phone, lol).
Why Google/Motorola would make simple things like this worse as updates come out is beyond me... le sigh.
A "simple phone upgrade" to something unlockable with 2+ GB RAM is my best option I guess, lol.
Agreed. Luckily 2 GB is the baseline nowadays, but I feel like I don't want to take the chance and just go for 3 next time.
While we're still on the subject though, which xposed modules do you use? I wonder if they do contribute to RAM usage.

Xposed list is pretty lengthy, I'm sure something here is using RAM. And I totally agree with you - baseline 3GB (or more) in my next phone, with a quad or even octo-core processor.
Ah, the days of 1GB and dual-core being top of the line, lol.
Here's the Xposed list:
- AcDisplay
- All Notifications Expanded
- App Settings
- Chrome New Tab
- Disable Location Consent
- GPS Notification
- Google Play Music Listen Later (Just installed recently, haven't set up yet to test it out)
- Google Search API
- Gravity Box
- Handle External Storage
- Hide Apps Xposed (did not work on 4.1.2 since I wasn't running GEL, haven't tested after KK install)
- MinMinGuard
- MinMinLock (Just installed, haven't set up yet, might delete)
- Multi Users
- Notification Mod
- OK Google For 3rd Party Launchers (Just installed, haven't really played with yet)
- Pandora Patcher
- Stop Switch Delay
- Swiftkey Goodness On More Fields
- Swipeback
- Ultimate Dynamic Navbar
- UnToaster Xposed (version 1.1.7 - I couldn't get TiBu to work correctly with the newer versions through 1.2.5)
- Unbeloved Hosts
- XBlast Tools
- Xposed Preference Injector
- Xposed Torch (couldn't get to function correctly after KK installation)
- YouTube Ad Away
- YouTube Allow Fullscreen HDMI
I've noticed that Gravity Box and XBlast do a lot of the same things, I'm thinking I can whittle one down as long as I can find all of my settings within the other.
Using NotiSysInfo to monitor I noticed my RAM usage typically bounces between 85-125 MB free, depending on what is going on in the phone. This is double from what it used to be on 4.1.2 (typically I'd be running with about 40-50 MB RAM free). Knowing this, I'm not so sure the phone is killing the music apps based on RAM usage alone, unless the threshold for free RAM needed has been raised...
...if that is the case, any idea of a good app to lower the threshold for free RAM before the phone starts killing things? I was looking at Auto Memory Manager, but it didn't seem to do the trick keeping music alive in the background.
Sounds like a good idea for another Xposed Module, lol. Do you happen to know the thread for posting up ideas or requests?

I think AMM worked for me for a while, but wasn't perfect. Nothing really ever did the trick like a restart... which makes me think that there is a memory leak somewhere, but I could never track it with any app I used. Maybe it is something to do with xposed? I never tested my phone long enough without it.
I haven't had it in a while, and I've done two things since it kept happening consistently the last time: 1) switch from SwiftKey to Google Keyboard. 2) Deactivate Muzei, best wallpaper app ever (RIP). Both apps seemed to consume variably large amounts of RAM.
Another thing I should note is that when frantically googling memory leaks, someone wrote on XDA that Android can only handle so many services running at once, so that when the number is exceeded, it automatically kills one. Possibly, this is the issue with the music.

I found a solution in the "ask Xposed questions" thread listed above. Use the module App Settings and for the apps to stay running in background checkmark "resident". Works perfectly for me now.
I agree AMM is junk. KeepRunning doesn't work that well either. Xposed all the way!
I wonder if this is the same issue I'm having with Hangouts and SMS notifications. It seems that if I have enough going on in the background, Hangouts will stop giving me notifications for SMS. When I go into the app, the new message(s) is there and waiting for me to read it. This to me is a huge problem. I didn't have this issue on CM11. For me, it seems it most always happens if I'm using the Facebook app and viewing a link from Facebook on Chrome. I've now made a habit of checking Hangouts periodically to see if I have any new messages.

I would try clearing your data for Hangouts. Sometimes notifications won't come in if they are associated with an older android device ID.
I have had nothing but problems with hangouts and the messaging app. I deleted both and am using a third party messing app now. No problems.

att variant with cricket sim, i just did disable all bloatware option in the app itself and i have no issues
Rather than a bunch of XML files from people that think it works FOR THEM, we need one big list of the packages WITH EXPLANATIONS as to what exactly they do, and any dependencies they may have that could break other stuff. Without that its all a waste of time. I've seen several threads like this now but not one was of any use at all because its just people posting an xml saying 'look at me i disabled 94 packages", which means nothing to anyone else who might need some of the stuff they disabled, or might not even have some of the stuff they disabled if its carrier specific.
I have no issue going down the list on my phone one at a time to see if it needs disabling, the problem is for a lot of them, I have no clue what they do, and googling them using the link form within the app didnt help at all. I am not going to disable something unless i know exactly what it does, I don't want to find out in 3 months time that something isnt working and spend forever trying to figure out why, at least if i know what each disabled thing does then i will remember that i had turned it off, i can refer back to the notes on what each one does and turn that one back on.

so all this has been went over in the s7 forum multiple times if you do a Google search the info pops up everywhere. it will be the same for s8 since they are both on 7.0. Also debloat lists are different for everyone you may use something I don't...but there are plenty of safe apps to remove lists. Side note package disabler auto debloat has about 3 to 5 things you shouldn't turn off like the enterprise stuff and a couple others.
I also did disable all bloatware. However, I noticed it misses a lot of crapware on the phone. I ended up disabling another 30 or so myself. I'm sure I missed some and when I ha e time I will continue. I don't disable anything without knowing exactly what it is so it's very slow work

Hello Gang! I just wanted to point out a couple of my findings from my note 7/note 5 when using package disablers..
They can do more harm then good. Especially when disabling system APKS. Over time I would notice I was losing space because some aps were just creating error logs over and over and over.. Or trying to access apps over and over that have been disabled.
The best way to do things is to go into app manager and disable the bloatware ONLY. This is facebook,NFL, verizon apps, etc. Do not disable anything system related other then the updates if you want to stop getting updates but even then I believe that might cause some issues. I have currently used package disabler to disable ONLY the "samsung update" apks and manaully disabled or removed the bloatware from verizon via app manager and have been going a week strong with 0 issues that everyone else seems to have and over 170+ apps installed and enabled.
I have done EXTENSIVE testing on this matter. You can search the note 7 and note 5 verizon forums if you wish to check my creds =D
Just be careful. We found out with the S7 that disabling certain packages actually caused an increase in battery drain. What happens is that a certain process keeps pinging another process over and over again because it's not getting an answer in return.
I would recommend disabling 5 packages at a time and see what kind of effect it has on things.

If you click disable all bloat ware it disable the external media package which then makes it where you cannot access your sd card
You cant jus blindly disabled the stuff that package disabler has classed as bloatware and coloured pink because some of it is CLEARLY not bloatware and a lotof the bloatware is not even coloured pink.
What we need to know (still) is what ones are safe to disable, and what ones are NOT safe to disable. There are 4 ANT services it has coloured pink, i am not sure what they are but stuff to do with antennas doesnt sound like bloatware to me? I disabled them anyway and not noticed anything bad. I left all the knox stuff enabled because i use Secure Folder and I expect it needs all the knox stuff to work.
I have disabled things like DEX, bixby, S Health, anything to do with Edge stuff, blue light filter which i dont need, carmode stub (for some drivelink car thing that i dont have), the clock, "CNN for edge panel" which is obviously bloat but isnt even coloured pink, enterprise sim pin services, enterprise vpn servcices, epdgtestapp, anything to do with Gear VR, google play music, gooogle play movies and tv, nfc service, photos, professional audio. and the obvious bloatware like excel etc.
My battery life is good, but now im worried something might be creating logs and filling up my space!

This is dead on. Unless you know exactly what dependancies the app is that you are using package disabler depends on, you are going to do a lot more harm than good. This phone sleeps apps not used after a few days and the rest you need to be very careful with killing, because the phone could check for the app or an app that depends on it could check over and over and over, causing slowdowns, powerloss etc.

[OnePlus 6] manually Debloating OOS 5.1.5 and Recovery

Manual debloating the OnePlus 6
Hello! I just get my OnePlus 6 with 256 GByte and tried to debloat it a little bit.
I don't use most of the google apps, so I tried to delete it.
As I have deleted a little bit too much here are also the steps to go back to stock.
For the manual debloating I used the app:
System app remover (ROOT)
So before debloating the OP6 must be rooted.
I used this method with success:
[OnePlus 6] Magisk Root on OOS 5.1.5 with SafetyNet checks passed
After the rooting I installed "System app remover (ROOT)" and removed all unwanted system apps.
I rebooted after the removing of every system app and checked if there are side effects.
Here are my findings:
- "Chrome" must NOT be deleted or you aren't able to setup a google account!
If you have accidently removed it (like me) you have to flash the whole OOS 5.1.5 (from this thread:
[OnePlus 6][ROM][OTA][Oxygen OS] Mirrors for official Oxygen OS ROMs and OTA updates
In detail this zip:
5.1.5: OnePlus6Oxygen_22_OTA_009_all_1805172226_4f2de.zip
- Copy the 5.1.5 zip-file on the phone and flash it via:
Code:
Settings - System Updates - Gearwheel in upper right corner - Local upgrade - choose the 5.1.5-rom-zip-file for flashing
- After flashing the 5.1.5 rom and rebooting once you have to enter the stock recovery and make a factory reset:
Code:
Choose language - Wipe data and cache - Reset system setting
- Now you have the original setup and can begin freshly
I am able to delete these system apps without any problems afterwards:
- Drive
- Duo
- Gmail
- Google
- Google Pay
- Google Play Movies & TV
- Google Play Music
- Maps
- NVBackupUI
- OnePlus Account
- Photos
- TelemetryJService
- Youtube
So for now even a little bit of deblaoting as TWRP is not available.
I will complete the list with debloated apps as I have new informations.
EDIT:
# New debloats (with no impact for now):
- OK Google enrollment
- X Google enrollment
- OnePlus Switch (app for copying data from old to a new phone)
I understand removing certain Google apps like Gmail, Play Movies and Play Music as there are other (arguably better) alternatives. But removing "Google" altogether seems extremely silly.

I don't use the app or want the "OK Google"-thing. So I remove it. Simple as that. Everyone can choose by themselve what to use.
I don't mind these apps sitting on my phone. Whats the use of 6GB or 8GB RAM then?
Not to discourage you or your method but just going into the app info and disabling it works pretty well too!

not only is freezing apps working and doing the job, it's even the correct and recommended way to proceed because if apps are uninstalled they'd reappear with each rom-flash while freezing apps survives any rom-updates (dirty flashes) in the case of incremental backups it may or may not survive, depending on the content of such updates. certainly major version changes would usually re-install those apps.
this especially applies for people who flash custom rom nightlies, weeklies etc. while not so important for stock roms with OTA updates.
so why did i say it's recommended and the correct way? because everyone should develop routines that always work without issues, including
uninstalling apps that have a negative implact and the hassle to re-flash the entire system instead of simply defrost the app.
and why is that not just personal preference? because people who get into trouble unnecessarily by uninstalling system apps willl clutter the threads and blame rom and kernel devs quite often, not talking about the often stressed and naughty discussions resulting from that.
BTW while one can uninstall "google" on many custom roms and apparently this one, you would regret doing so on a nexus or pixel phone.
why? because it won't fully boot but crash just before the system UI kicks in, in fact in the process of activating apps or however the wording
may be on different roms and devices and API versions.
this is not just in reply to the discussion here, it's for everyone to consider.

Some of them were running in the background, and they have similar names, so i deleted all of the "test" folders in /system/app, and / priv-app. They are just sensor testing apps, no rela-life function... But i'm curious, what app causes unability to take a screenshot?
It's much easier and safe to freeze the apps with titanium backup.
There is no need to keep Chrome on your system at all (I have been lured here by a similar post, but can't find it any longer). Like that dude @rav101 said before, the only thing you have to do is to update System Webview and you are fine!
That's exactly how I did it and I haven't had a single issue yet.
I maintain an Aroma OxygenOS Debloater for the OnePlus 5 in this thread. Anyone wishing to try that out on the OnePlus 6 running OxygenOS can do so. Here's the latest release post. It should theoretically work for you since OxygenOS's structure is pretty much similar to the one that runs on OnePlus 5/5T.
Do let me know in case there are files that need to be added for user selection in the installer and I'll be happy to download the latest OxygenOS for the OnePlus 6 and go through it to add files specifically present in it which aren't there in the OxygenOS running on older devices that I mentioned.

Google is devil

I think I'll just install a custom ROM

Voiding the warranty will not be a pleasant thing to do, but I'm annoyed as hell by some of the things that are happening in ZenUI:
- Disabling Google apps i.e. chrome, duo, YouTube is futile since the apps turn back on again.
- Since chrome can't be permanently disabled I can't click on links in apps such as Sync for Reddit without chrome opening automatically asking me to use Chrome.
- Some accessibility settings that were turned on randomly turn themselves off after a reboot. In my case it happened to a password manager that was suddenly no longer able to auto fill fields in my browser.
- I can't seem to switch songs with my volume control . Simply a feature I really miss.
I'll give them one update to see if either of the above improves. If not I'll install a custom ROM.

It seemed to happen once via Playstore downloading languages for something, could never catch exactly what triggered this.
Anyway, after several reboots and redisabling, it hasn't happened for two days now.
Don't miss disabling the 3 Facebook system apps.
They at least have remained disabled.

You had 3 Facebook system apps on your device? I had the normal Facebook app which I was able to fully delete.

You have them too.
Look in Settings/apps/, choose "all apps', then in 3 dots at upper right choose "show system".
Then scroll down to "face".
I found them via the firewall app Netguard, recommended.

Lookie here.... Thanks. This prompts me even more to install a custom ROM.

I don't agree.
I think Asus has done a very good job with this one.
All the custom roms seem to have all sorts of various problems.
The 4 Google apps Asus had to preinstall to keep on the right side of Google.
As long as they finally stay disabled, I'm ok with that.
The Fakebook stuff is more serious, IMHO they made a bad judgement call installing the Fakebook stuff.
(Maybe they get paid for doing that?)
But the apps don't seem to do anything while disabled, I have Netguard monitoring them.
And I haven't found anything else problematic at all yet.
.
Advice from some 5-7 year old threads just came in:
Disabling the app "Google Partner Setup" will stop the automatic re-enabling of other apps.
I have not tried this, yet anyway.

Thanks for this. I didn't stumble upon such a thread when I was searching for a solution. Let's see how it goes.
As for ZenUI, it's definitely not the worst and I like how little bloatware is included. Perhaps I'm a bit quick with my judgement and I'll wait for a next update.
The fact that apps that require accessibility settings cease to function after a reboot until I simply open that app is a huge pain in the ass tho. Examples include: bitwarden and swiftly switch (pro). Hope this gets fixed. I was wrong in saying that the accessibility toggle automatically turns off. I assumed that because said apps don't function as intended after a reboot.
As for custom ROMs I'll definitely wait. I went through the threads and there seem to be quite a couple of issues that need to be ironed out first. Flashing a ROM now might open new doors to other problems that are bigger than the ones I'm facing right now.

As someone who just spent a week trying to get LOS installed and is going back to stock, I can testify that custom ROMs are not ready yet. All of the necessary elements (recovery, ROM, gapps, etc.) have multiple showstopper issues. Add on to that the confusion caused by A/B partitions. I've never kept a phone stock before, but I'm flashing stock and will check back in 6 months to see if custom ROMs are stable by then.

I don't use those apps, but have you set them to autostart and to "no battery optimization"?

Agree with disabling of accessibility features.
I use FliudNG for gestures (highly recommended especially for 6z) and I have to disable and re-enable it's accessibility, then re-enable the app again after a reboot.

So strange. In my case the only thing I NEED to do for those apps to work is simply open the app and close it again. I haven't tried FluidNG yet but I expect the same results.
Edit: tried it. Same results indeed.

FWIW I have three facebook apps listed (after uninstalling the main app) - "Facebook App Installer", "Facebook App Manager" and "Facebook Services". Don't know what these do, so I just disabled them. They're disabled now so I'm hoping they can't get their podgy fingers involved in anything?

Yep, blocking them was recommended by someone already earlier in this thread. Good find either way.

I have been tracking their potential attempts at internet access via Netguard, and there is none.
So they do seem to stay comfortably disabled.
The other preloaded apps that I repeatedly had to disable have also remained disabled for a week now, so that problem seems to have gone away.
(Or are they just waiting for a wakeup signal from the mothership? )
Have someone tried disabling apps using Island or similar Android-for-work software? It says that it can work without root by setting the software as a device owner using adb... Because with every possible app disabled (GP, FB, etc) their folders on Internal Storage still recreated after removal.

Laggy UI

I have only had this phone for about a week or so. When I turned it on, everything was smooth. Most of the ui elements became very laggy. I updated to android 11, and couldn't get edxposed working, but while trying to get it working.... everything was super smooth.
I reverted back to android 10, everything was smooth. Removed a bunch of google apps, and verizon apps still smooth. Installed magisk, reflashed boot image, installed EdExposed, a patcher to patch installing unsigned apk files, installed youtube vanced, removed the patcher, and the yt vanced installer.... Still smooth.
At some point randomly the next day.... lag city. It's particularly bad in stuff like the discovery feed where scrolling acts like it isn't cached and it lags, and the chat app. If I accidentally click the emoji face, it might take like 6 to 8 seconds before it becomes responsive.
I have fewer things installed on this phone than when I got it.
I haven't really seen many complaints about this, so I am wondering what's going on.
Now all my apps started crashing and the phone needs to be reset, probably reflashed. It's just a barrage of google apps force closing.

Running Android 11 stock (no hacks or patches) with all of my added apps and no problems at all.
So far stock 10 and Dirty Unicorns 14.7 have run the best for me. I'd hold off on the hacks for a bit untill everything picks up.
I flashed 10 again last night. The only difference is that instead of using the signature patcher I found something in EdExposed manager to run unsigned apk files. It's been good so far, If it stays good, I will just assume the patcher is malicious, and did something that set off a time bomb of sorts. It is a pretty shady app.
Ok, it's now a few hours later, and my lag has returned. I expect to be reflashing and setting this phone up again tomorrow night due to a cascade of gapps force closing.
I got it fixed. It was an app I never mentioned, because I didn't consider that it could cause this. Adblock Reborn.
As soon as disabled it and rebooted, everything was normal again.

Thank you for posting this
A friend came to me with a similar issue on his new Pixel 4a, so I jumped on XDA to see if anyone had a similar issue. After reading your post, it turns out that other ad blocker apps can cause this issue as well. He was running an old version of Adaway installed from the XDA Labs app. I updated it to the latest version of Adaway from here, and the problem is gone. He did not have this issue on Android 10, only after updating to Android 11. I would not have thought to check the ad blocker, so thanks again

Thank you too, because I installed the old version of adaway in place of adblock reborn. It is working fine at this point, and I am on 10. We will see how it goes.
FYI - No issues with AdGuard on Android 10 or 11; just works.
