So, I managed that rarest of all things, I got a good deal out of my mobile provider - unlimited everything including data, tethering, roaming and a new handset for £25 upfront and £30 a month for 2 years. The handset is a P20 Pro, black, unlocked and dual SIM. Not too a shabby deal I think.
However, now I'm left with a bit of a First World issue. Should I keep the P20 Pro or sell it on Fleabay and wait for the new Mate 20 Pro, or even the Pixel 3 XL?
I should say that right now I have a Mate 10 Pro for work and a Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S for private. I could combine obviously and get my It guys to enable the P20 on the work network and have one phone with 2 SIMs. BUT, the new Mate 20 Pro is coming, I don't mind MIUI (I especially like the desktop mode, most underrated and best feature by far!). The phone is lovely in hand and the camera is fantastic ( I imagine, I haven't switched it on).
but I do like Google "au naturel", ie Pixel phones. On the other hand I really. really don't like notches.... The Pixel 3 XL has got the mother of all notches (unless the rumours are true) and the P20 Pro has one too. The Mi Mix 2S doesn't have a notch and is bezel-free. I am not a narcissist, I know what I look like, I don't feel the need to validate myself to others by constantly taking and sharing selfies, so the location of the front camera is not an issue in the slightest (not that it makes much difference in use any ways). Also the screen gesture navigation system on Xiaomi is excellent. Cons, it is heavy, the camera is not on a par apparently.
So, the P20 Pro, keep or swap?
I'm in the same boat as you to be honest. I love my P20 Pro don't get me wrong and I was one of the lucky ones that got a bootloader unlock code in time.
However the Mate 20 Pro and the Kirin 980 are very appealing, just the thought of no bootloader unlock is my concern.
I think I'll wait to see what the Pixel 3 offers then make my decision then as it might be the likely contender for me. Just hoping the P20 Pro holds a good value is all.
I had the same fortune as OP, my P20 Pro has been literally given by my network provider... 7€, that's it no payment hidden in a new type of subscription, just plain offered, just for being in tacitly reconducted deal on a special offer from theirs (130go per month data plan, unlimited calls to aunty destination mobile or landline in the world and of course no roaming in the EU, and some other goodies) so I jumped on their offer, as I am not tied to them, I can jump ship to any other provider at any time no cost. But I also had this really first world problem, I already had the OnePlus 5t and the Pixel 2XL...
And I feel common sense, no need for more than one, or ok, two for a backup or travel device, but three devices, mhm, really odd.
But the phone itself is really reliable, and battery wise is a beast by itself, and I have looked at the Pie beta for it, and seeing first hand what it brought to my Google pixel unit, in terms of freshness and optimizations, I am sure it will improve the experience.
The only thing that I don't like about the P20 Pro is that the settings are really not coherent, like something's there, but not in the place where you would like to find them. For everything else it is a serviceable device. And in the Pie update settings are found to be streamlined a bit better. So, I hope to see it in action.
If only the os were a little less hungry and aggressive sometimes, power wise, and stick more to Google's or OnePlus presentation, it would be perfect.
I don't know what to expect from the 3XL, but it will be another good phone. So if you are happy toying with the camera, the P20 Pro, now, or later on Pie, will be excellent to keep. Bi monthly updates and security patches, that's at least how it worked out for me and it's fine.
Putting the Pro up for sale un-opened. Very difficult, but I think it's worth having the money in the bank for the new phone coming.
If I had the choice of of get rid, I like flashing ROMs and this has very few. Treble are ok but lots broken.
Shame as it's a great device
I would definitely wait. My P20 Pro isn't as fast or smooth as my cheaper Mix 2S. The next generation Kirin chip will be in the Mate 10 Pro and P20 Pro that are coming out and it's supposed to be about 20% faster than the CPU in this phone.
I went to Best Buy to pick up a Moto G7. When I seen they had the Android One version of the Moto X4 on sale for $150 (3gb/32gb) and $200 (4gb/64gb), the G7 was no longer a consideration. Many would say that the G7 has a better display and more modern design. I'm personally not a fan of rear fingerprint sensors and was happy to avoid a "notch" (even though the teardrop isn't all that bad). The G7 being $300, I saved $100 and got a comparable CPU, same ram, same storage, better cameras, NFC, front firing speaker, and IP68 water proofing. The IP68 was important to me to because my main hobby is metal detecting and I'm outdoors a lot. Hoping for longer software updates as well being Android One. I love bone stock Android, I'm pretty stoked right now! lol I remember wanting one of these when they came out, but not bad enough to pay $400 for one.
I'm basically back. I ditched my iPhone SE and came back to Android. I really liked the design and form factor of the SE but it was time for an upgrade/larger display. I was actually able to pull $150 for it pretty quick, so my X4 only cost me $61 out of pocket with tax. I've had several Nexus devices in the past, my last being the 5X. I'm a stock Android fan that is far from a power user, main usage being calls, texts, and YouTube music. I don't game on my phone at all or take many pictures either. So as much as I would love to have a Pixel 3, I can't justify spending that much. The Android One X4 is seriously just perfect for me. I went with the 4gb/64gb variant mainly for the extra gb of ram, longevity factor. Happy to be back!
Goodbye IOS, gone for good.
Beyond Android Q, you will then be able to keep the phone updated with Lineage OS and most GSI's going forward. Congrats! ?
If you want the Google (Pixel 3) Camera I suggest starting with the download from the first link.
The second link gives some explanation of the camera features and why some work and other's don't.
I don't know 100% for sure if you need Google Services or Google Photos installed for the basic camera to work but I've read that MicroG will work as a substitute in custom roms in place of Google Services.
If that's too technical, just download the latest update from the first link and install as a normal app (I haven't used my new X4 yet but I think it will work w/o any issues).

When I had to replace my Samsung S7's I bought Amazon Prime moto x4's. I found them to be every bit as good as the S7, more than adequate for me, and I liked the cleaner android experience. But then Pie started rolling out. I needed to stay on 8.1 because I use a phone recording app in my work and I could not root the Amazon Prime version.
Then I saw the best buy deal for $200 for the 4gb/64gb rootable X4 (Android One version). I replaced my three amazon prime versions, rooted the android one versions, and all is well. Sold one of the amazon prime versions, gave one to a relative, and turned the other one into a bedside clock and radio.
The only downside was the lack of wireless charging which I use for 99% of my charging (including a wireless charging dock in the car. I even have a few portable charges with built-in QI wireless charging). But a $12 wireless charger adapter that sits inside my case overcame that problem.
I think the moto x4 4gb/64gb Android one version for $200 is the best value in an Android phone right now.
I went to best buy and bought a Moto One, returned it for Moto X4 because there was no development for the Moto One.

Smart move.
I also was looking for the best value for the lowest cost.
Continuous development gives a phone value over time, and thus I bought this phone (after $30 refund) new for $135 that had a long good two year history and continuous increased developmental work over time. Much better than buying an expensive new phone with no support. Part of that history also included a high carrier VoLTE coverage, also important. I expect this to be a big upgrade from my last phone (50% more RAM, 70-90% faster processor, and 100% more storage).

Agreed! Yes, the design is a little dated with the display and 16:9 aspect ratio. I greatly prefer a front fingerprint sensor over rear and I am fine with what comes with that, larger bezels.
Stock Android, nice design/build quality, 1080p ips display, SD630, 4gb/64gb, solid cameras, NFC, ip68, USB C, headphone jack, and a front firing speaker for $200. You can't beat this. Especially if you need CDMA/Verizon support like I do.
One big thing Motorola always has over many other unlocked phones is CDMA support. I unfortunately can't utilize the many great GSM only unlocked phones on the market. Where I live in Wisconsin, Verizon and US Cellular are the only logical choices. Horrible AT&T / T Mobile coverage. I pay $105 a month for 3 lines on Verizon Prepaid, 15gb of data on each line. It's nice to have priority over the thousands of people in my area who use straight talk/total wireless (Verizon MVNOs) to. I used Straight Talk for a month on my iPhone SE and the data speed capped at 5mbps. After I switched to Verizon Prepaid, my data speeds are always around 50mbps.
I'm stock Android or nothing. I love that Motorola doesn't waste time and resources on ruining Android OS by skinning and bloating it. Motorola will always be my go to for unlocked phones for 3 reasons. CDMA support, stock Android, and Value.
Ditto, I'm a happy camper with my new Android One X4 (on Fi's software) 4G/64GB capacity, plus more storage with mSD card, mostly for pix & videos when we travel - for a net cost of about $80 including a nice Poetic heavy-duty case, after getting a $92/94 trade-in credit for an aging SS Galaxy S7 Edge with its infamous ghost screen (annoying as hell) that I had been using, since selling the Nexus 6 with a new battery on Swappa; and DW traded her Nexus 6P with the aging (45% capacity remaining) battery into Google, for a (gasp) Moto G6 - and got refunds, enough to get an integrated 4,000 mAh battery case for her all day (gaming) use.
Back on my impressions & likes on the Moto X4, memory & storage/expandable capacity, decent battery life, running Pie after a series of OTA update (probably leaving it stock, "restore" G.Pay (Magisk ... yeah, lots of constant attention) and NFC, and, of course, 3.5 mm headphone jack/front-facing (solo) speaker and a decent "hobby" piered camera for those travel & family photos (not great, good enough) and Android Auto that works (in-dash navigation, supported by our 2019 Hyundai Sonata on a 7" display ... was a pain with the G6, easy with the iPhone SE on Apple CarPlay). For our global travel needs, the X4 has more radio bands & flexibility than the G6 or G7, comparable to the newer iPhones - this should serve me well abroad on "Fi" supported partner/roaming cellular networks & VPN-enabled WiFi hotspots.
I kind of missed the slightly bigger 5.7" (18:9) G6 screen & sleek look but it is still on Oreo patched thru Jan. 2019 - probably at some point, unlock BL/root & load Lineage OS to keep it going, a year or more from now when DW wanted something better, she's happy with her "Fi" services & OTA updates for simplicity. I looked & considered the G7 and even the "Play" variant & the bigger screen, yet without NFC - not truly worth it for a marginal "upgrade" of incremental jump in values for money. For my XDA fun & challenges, I'm going next with a Xiaomi Mi/Redmi global dual-sim in the 6" factor (6.2" or 6.3" if I feel like it) running Android One, that should keep me busy.
All these done at minimal/subsidized Google Fi trade-in when promotions were being run between last year & now, I realized that both the G6 and X4 are getting bad trade-in, but I ain't paying $500+ for a Pixel 3/XL brand new, even with whatever generous trade-in & credits. For play, I got a Huawei Honor - dual sim, running Pie (Linerage OS) for travel & on WiFI, and, down to a good old iPhone SE (16GB only) with a Google Fi data-only sim, that's great for travel for VoIP (Ooma, G.Voice, WhatsApp, Duo, etc.) except that Fi blocked it from tethering ... including Apple CarPlay.
Lastly, I am running the X4 on T-Mobile's network and when traveling outside the USA, switch out the nano sim to Fi's data only sim, since I've been using our Google Voice's number, practically 95% of the calls are VoIP/WiFi calling (and, Ooma's mobile app for outbound call, using a ported "home" number.)
I have the 8 right now but I'm still within the exchange period and really debating on if I should exchange it. Honestly I'm not the impressed. I feel like the brand isn't as amazing as it once was. I don't care about 5g because I'm connected to WiFi 90% of the day. I'm just thinking price point wise. I mean I can save like $200 if I go with the 7 pro if there isn't a huge difference. From what I have been reading the 7 pro might be better than the 8. Just looking for opinions.
I was in the same spot as you, and tbh, i picked the 8.
Its not a huge upgrade, but it has a better cpu, newer, will most likely get more system updates in the long run, stock its f2fs over the ext4 (7pro), camera has been tweaked a little i think, devs might switch from 7 series to 8, so yes you will save money, but then again if thats the reason to downgrade then pick op6
Stick with 8 and enjoy it, i can't see a reason to look back. But thats me.
I had the same problem. Screen on my OP6T went crazzy and ive tried to replace it but it costs around 150$ so i went for a new phone. I chose OP8 on top of OP7TPro because its newer phone and i will have long term updates for OOS. Hope i will not regret it. Still waiting for my device.
I ended up going with the 7 pro bc of price and I got the 8gb 256gb model. Thanks for the advice!
I've been running a rooted OP6 for 3.5 years or more. Currently on stock OOS 11 with some root specific extras. It still behaves OK, but I'm thinking of getting something newer because of occasional issues that may be age related. OP is selling the OP9 for $499 today in the US. For those of you who are familiar with the device, do you think it's worth buying at that price this deep into its existence?
For 499$? Hell no!
I bought almost new one for 399$ and still pissed. Camera is horrible even with Gcam. Chipset gets hot while playing videos sometimes let alone gaming.
Also depend what you are looking for. OP 9rt has everything OP9 has and have better camera and thermal. I'd say go for 9rt than base OP9 if it's available in the price range.
Thanks. I didn't buy it before the sale ended. I figured I'd have other opportunities with some decent phone or another. Seems like a few years ago, more people were happy with their new phones. Now, it seems like a lot of people have problems with the more recent models.
The phone is fine (cameras aren't the best but everything else is great). The software is the problem. If you want it so you can flash a custom ROM on it, it's great. If you want to just use it stock, it's harder to recommend.
That said, I would take a 9 over a Pixel 6 (in fact my initial purchase decision was between these two since the sale on the OP9 at the time was the same price as the 6) or pretty much anything else because of the community support. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are only just now starting to get decent custom ROMs, Tensor is a mediocre SoC with a weak modem, the display is better on the OnePlus, and the OnePlus has way better battery.
When it comes to devices where I live in the US, the only options for those of us who want root and custom ROMs while maintaining full compatibility with all carriers are OnePlus and Pixel. It's too bad Samsung locks their devices down so much.
I'd have thought the Pixel 6 would have been my best bet until I started reading the myriad complaints about it from users. The glowing commercial site reviews tout the features, but don't mention that those features don't always work as would be expected. The same seems to be the case for the current generation of Samsung phones.
What's the issue with OOS on the OP9? I'm probably running something similar on my OP6, though via root, I've eliminated a lot of the bloat. I'd intended to flash custom ROMs, but I never have on this phone as I've had it set up to my liking most of the time. I'm running Android 11. Maybe that's the issue? 12 has more problems?
People don't like the Oppo-ification that has happened. ColorOS and OxygenOS are on the same codebase now and they're extremely similar. It doesn't help that OnePlus is lagging on updates a lot too. They just started dropping the C.60 update which comes with OOS 12.1 today and ColorOS has been on C.62 since April.
Honestly I got tired of waiting for 12.1 and switched my global LE2115 to ColorOS yesterday and I like it. The bloat is there but it's only an issue if you actually run it. And honestly it cracks me up seeing the Chinese in the universal search lol. *shrug*
One thing I really appreciate about this device is that the MSM Tool is available. This is the low level firmware flash that is meant for manufacturers to use to rapidly restore devices back to working order. Since we have it, it's fairly easy to recover from common bricking scenarios, and I don't know that I would want to go back to a device that doesn't have it (like the Pixel). OnePlus also seems to have excellent warranty service, they don't even void the warranty if you brick the thing, unlike Google who claims they can't even re-flash the firmware and you have to pay for a new motherboard if you brick it.
There are some annoying issues with notifications (which strangely seem to naturally resolve themselves as you use the device) and aggressive battery management in A12 that you have to learn how to work around. It's not perfect but I like OOS12 and COS12 more than I like Pixel-clone ROMs or OneUI.
I wouldn't. Truth be told, if I still had my 6, I'd still be using it. Unfortunately, I left it on top of my car getting gas once, and drove off. Never found it or its pieces.
I ended up with the 7 Pro. It was OK, but I hated the curved screen.
I sent the 8T back as OP screwed early adopters with a water bottle while a few hours later offering a pop up box that was a much better deal for the same price.
Now I have the 9. I'm not crazy about it. It's ok, but I regret paying full price for it. It'd be a hard sale at $499 for me.
Maybe an 8T would be a decent option if you could get a good price on it.
You can get the dual sim version on Amazon it's Chinese version but when I updated it to Android 12 from le2110 it turn into le2115 which is covered by at&t, so far so good, used to have the Pixel 6, I liked it until I got bored with it, I am not a gamer but all this phones depends on who is using it, I don't have any problem with OOS 12, it's stable for me, but I like the customization of the CUSTOM ROMS..

Good point. I've never had to use the MSM tool on my OP6, though I've come close a couple of times. The TWRP discrepancies between OOS versions has played havoc with me here and there. But I was always able to solve it before having to use MSM. Certainly its availability is comforting and valuable.

I'm not a gamer, either. I'd possibly use a custom ROM depending on things. I use other than the stock launcher, anyway, so at least if I don't like the look of OOS 12, I'd sidestep that much of it.

Why would you pick the 8T over the 9? The only real advantage I see is 12GB vs 8GB (hasn't been an issue for me and I'm a heavy user). The disadvantages: hugely inferior 5G modem (that's external instead of integrated into the SoC like the 888 so even worse battery consumption), slower SoC, slower storage (much slower on random writes), closer to the end of the official software support period, etc...
For $499 you can do a lot worse than the OnePlus 9 but also can't really do better.

Honestly this is my first OnePlus and I *prefer* ColorOS to OOS. The depth of customization is insane and it doesn't seem to be as buggy (but that could be due to the fact that C.62 is simply newer and that OOS will get there when C.62 finally releases for it in a month or so too, it's hard to say).
I had to use the MSM Tool... Multiple times... If I had to complain about one thing with this device, it's extremely easy to soft brick it. I have been into rooting and customizing my Android phones since 2009 and of the entire list of phones in my signature, I've only ever gotten the OnePlus 9 to the point of no return. When trying to flash to the B slot, sometimes everything that can possibly go wrong does and you end up with an unbootable system. The A/B system was the worst thing Google ever did to those of us who like to customize our devices. That said, the MSM Tool gets you back up and running with no fuss when you do need it, provided that you have a good USB cable and the technique to get the device into EDL. The lack of working TWRP has led to the need to flash a new recovery with every custom ROM and that's even more chances for something to go wrong.

I don't get 5G on AT&T and I can't say I was terribly impressed with it on T-Mo either. Certainly not enough that it wowed me over LTE.
I've had big problems with BT on the 9 as well, especially in my Hondas. Seems to do ok in the Ford. I didn't have those problems in the same cars on either the 6 or the 7 Pro.
For what I do, I can't say I've noticed huge differences in performance. The 9 does transfer to my PC faster than the other 2, but I don't sync it that often. Performance has always been good enough for me.
The games I play I haven't noticed much difference in.
If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't pay $499 for a 9. Let alone the $750 I paid for it new.
Depends on what you value and for you use your phone.
YMMV.

You gotta watch out with AT&T's VoLTE whitelist... They will eventually kick the phone off since it goes by the IMEI and that doesn't change when the software does. The LE2115 is the only one that's approved for AT&T.

These are definitely fair points.
When it's working right, 5G is ridiculous on T-Mobile. I have seen over 300Mbps in the middle of the day and over 500Mbps overnight and that's with my cheap little MVNO that's deprioritized too. My point about the modem applies to LTE as well though, not just 5G. An external modem will always use more power doing the same thing than an internal modem would.
I haven't noticed any issues with BT but I don't use it a lot.
The 865 is no slouch, it's just no 888 either.
I go back and forth on whether I think the $600 I paid for this phone is worth it. I have had some definite frustrations with it (notification issues on OOS *AND* COS are maddening!) but I still feel like I would have been miserable if I took the S21 FE or Pixel 6 for the same price...

Yeah I have heard this from other people but the OnePlus subreddit is full of people complaining about getting the boot so I would say it's coming, it's just a matter of when they get around to it.
I'm not really sure, my hardware version always changes to 2115 which is approved by at&t, when I do MSM it goes back to 2110 which is Chinese version but upon updating to OOS 12 it converts to 2115 on my hardware version. But if I put on custom ROM it goes back to 2110
i got a 9 i would sell and take trade with the 6. pm me
Just bought the AGM H5 6G/128G 4G phone. Looks to be fairly new and the reviews on Amazon are from people that got the phone for free so I was a bit skeptical but at the $269 USD pricepoint, I could at least check it out and have 30 days to return if something wasn't right.
First off, this phone is heavy, like 12.7 ounces heavy.. 7000mwh battery, night vision camera and a huge loudspeaker on the back that is overall very clear. Waterproof, dustproof, etc. Essentially, a Rugged phone. Screen protector is already applied to the phone and there is no need for a case.
Got the phone for my mom, she's always listening to podcasts while she gardens and I figured this would be perfect for her. Unboxxed the phone, setup of the phone was google standard, was able to pull off all her data through the initial setup. Phone is somewhat responsive for having a Snapdragon 6 , Apps installed are standard google apps, no carrier apps or any other garbage apps. I have no idea as to the rooting potential of this phone as it is not my phone to tinker with. Overall, seems like a pretty decent rugged phone for the price point.
Anyone else seen this phone or even have it? What are some of the things that I can pull off the phone that you'd like to see spec wise or anything else? Let me know. The other AGM line of phones seems pretty nice (one with a thermal camera built in). Also, the phone was able to accept my mom's T-Mobile sim (US) and VoWIFI and VoLTE work correctly on Tmobile network.
Here's the amazon link to the phone: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X36FCD3

Hi what kind of screen on time are you seeing, is the 7000mah claim legit? Did it support all TMobile bands including extended range lte? Thanks!

Sorry about not responding. so far so good VoLTE over tmobile and at&t. Battery is pretty stout. i forgot about the phone for about a week and it was still over 90% charge.. just mild usage, about 2 days worth of charge. pretty crazy phone if you're not looking for anything fancy.
I just got this phone second hand. Hasn't wanted to play nice with Verizon MVNO, think maybe it's APN settings.
I was able to poke around and root it with Magisk and ADB/Fastboot. I can cobble together a write-up, but I doubt I can share any links since this is my first post.

I didn't think this phone was a CDMA phone. Is your Verizon MVNO gsm? I mean, i like the stock rom with it, it's not too bad but would be nice to get a custom rom built for it, maybe tighten it up a bit.

It doesn't appear to be CDMA, but what research I was able to do before buying suggested it would work on the 4G bands Verizon does use. It will connect, but it frequently reconnects, to the point I haven't been able to make it my daily driver.
I've tried it with both Total Wireless (now Total), and US Mobile so far.

Ah ok, i'm currently on Black Wireless/RedPocket. and VoLTE works just fine..
I also bought the same h5, and there are a few inconvenient things I've noticed:
The screen has a slight touch delay, but it's enough to slow down typing and rhythm gaming.
All of the Bluetooth settings in dev options are greyed out except for the basic stuff.
The headphone jack is on the other side of the cover tether, making it tedious to access, but this is more a design issue.
Other than those things, it's a pretty great phone. Compatible with AT&Ts new 4g network, has WiFi calling, as you stated it's pretty quick for what it is, and the battery life is astronomical. I would just like to know if the touch lag is a limitation of the capacitive screen or a software issue, and if it's possible to enable all of the Bluetooth settings. I have a black view BV5900 too, and it has all of the Bluetooth settings unblocked, but uses lesser hardware than this.
