Love to hear a p2xl to p3xl upgrade story.
P2xl with a great display and some new features? I am in. Love my current p2xl and since it was a later build, the screen isn't bad, but an Samsung like display would be wicked!

I hope there is a dedicated notch complaint thread. The notch hate has been way worse than the notch. If you hate the phone you should 1. not buy it, and 2. spare those in a discussion forum from comments about how ugly it is. We got that. Anyone who has even occasionally read about the new Pixel has had a lifetime quota of notch hate bestowed upon them. I'm looking forward to the phone.

The pixel 2 xl is hands down the best phone I've ever had. I still love it. I will love the 3 xl. But, after people start getting their phones next week, be ready for at least a couple months of bull**** hate threads and posts. It's coming and most of us will be unbelievably tired of hearing the same thing over and over. And many of us will say exactly what you said, then get **** talked for saying it. Just be ready to ignore a lot of BS. It happens every time. For whatever reason people love to hate and troll and argue. In the end, it will stop and everyone will love the phone. It was exactly that with the 2 xl. It's soooo dumb.
Better sound, better display and hopefully better battery life? Those are the most important things to me. Once it can be rooted, I am in.

Display is much improved, I was okay with my 2 XL display, but this 3 XL is a real treat in that department.
Handles app management better than my 2 XL, with games (Bloons TD6) staying alive longer than previously.
Sound is definitely louder. As with the 2 XL, the bottom speaker is louder, but the front firing is still excellent. At full volume, my device has no distortion. I can't use full volume inside, it'll probably damage my hearing.
Camera is nothing major over the 2 XL, but I haven't given that a full test yet.
The notch, which others talk about first, is more of an afterthought to me. There are a couple places in apps where it doesn't play nice, but all in all, it doesn't bother me one bit.
I do use XDA Gestures. It really brings the screen to life by allowing it all the way to the bottom corners.
Are there other things I could've used $1000 for? Yes, but personally, I'm glad I spent it on the upgrade.
Edit: I'll post some battery stats at the end of the day or tomorrow.
Hello, first of all a thousand apologies if it is not the right place to publish it.
I currently have a Google Pixel 2 the little 5-inch, about 6 months ago. It does not present any type of problem or any fault.
What has been bothering me the smartphone after 3 months is the size, it became small, of course the logical thought is because you did not buy the pixel 2 xl? Because at that time I did not have the right budget and I did not feel the need for more screen, in fact it is comfortable this size but it turned out to be somewhat obsolete because it is not the same to play and watch videos on a 5-inch screen than in one of 6 or more.
The battery usually makes me about 4-4: 30 hours of screen when I am all day in 4G, it is not at all a bad autonomy but I usually stay quite short some days.
And the biggest problem, even if it seems somewhat illogical, is the software.
It works spectacular, no problem is locked in that. But it's too simple, too much, it can not be that it does not have more functions, it does not have any extra functions that many other layers have, it's all based on Google assitant.inches.
I look for something that solves these defects:
That has more screen, more autonomy, optical zoom x2 (I need it a lot for the university), a layer of customization with useful functions, if it can be 3.5 mm input and wireless charging.
My budget is maximum 750 dollars.
I was thinking about the Samsung Galaxy s9 plus but I read many comments that the software is not well polished and that there are degradations in terms of the battery.
Then I thought about the iphone xr but I do not know if I'm going to get along with IOS and the fact of having a screen that is not 1080p pulls me quite down and not have optical zoom.
What dou you recommend?
Of course thank you very much to those who respond.

I have the P2XL. A few more payments to go, before I switch. Not certain what I will replace it with just yet. The P4 is getting mixed reviews right now.

Still have my Pixel 2. Just don't want to shell out the money for a new phone. Looked hard at the Pixel 3a but didn't want to give up my 128GB of storage and it still does everythingi need a phone to do. Although the newer cameras are better, the Pixel 2 takes amazing photos and can't really tell the difference between newer phones quality unless "pixel peeping" especially with the modded gcam app.

I think the P4 isn’t worth considering since u hv a 2XL..better go with the 3 or 3a series if u really need to upgrade or wait for the 5 IMO.
No reason to ditch my Pixel 2. The size is perfect, bezels actually make screen functions reachable. Had it for nearly two years, got the battery replaced at uBreakiFix two months ago for $80, and now I'm back to a full day of use with nearly 1% idle drain and plenty of screen on time since I don't live on my phone. This thing purrs like a kitten and could easily get me through more than a day if necessary. It would be foolishly irresponsible of me to upgrade now.
Edit:
Today is a good example. See pics attached.

I agree with everything except battery. I’m always on social media and this thing lasts only 3 hrs.
I have told a few friends that I ordered a 4XL and they aren't really even gadget freaks and they all respond "Oh, why would you do that? Everyone says that phone sucks". I've read through most of the relevant posts on Reddit (real life reviews and not website articles) and it seems like the majority of the people commenting there are satisfied and are getting solid SOT. I am experienced Android user and know how to manage my device so I'm confident that I'll be satisfied with the battery (are people really ever without chargers anymore anyways).
Also, lots of people are sending back the phone because they can't justify the price...so why order it at all?

I'm coming from the s10+ and couldn't be happier with the Pixel 4xl. I love it! 100% agree with the two posts right above mine.
I think every year some people want Google to focus on putting everything in a phone including the kitchen sink similar to Samsung but that doesn't translate into a great user experience and is far from Google's philosophy. It's similar to how generally every year people talked about how the iPhone upgrade sucks yet they sale like hotcakes. There are plenty phones with high ram, curved screens, hole punch display etc but on the surface people looking at a sheet of paper will say the phone sucks but after using for a few you will understand the smooth simple consistent user experience. Many reviewers use the phone and find it boring because it's harder to sell and explain the idea of user experience over a higher number on a piece of paper. I have a 4 XL and the phone is great. The other Pixels were plagued with similar negativity also. My battery absolutely last me through the day and as more people post true positive experiences, true battery test etc the negativity will subside.
Coming from the Pixel 2xl, and have had many many devices back to the Evo 4g, this is by far the smoothest, cleanest, seamless experience thus far.
This year alone I've had the Xiaomi Mi 9T, OnePlus 7 Pro, Galaxy S10E and Galaxy Note 10 and now the Pixel 4 XL. Pixel is the best phone hands down. I'm a regular guy (user) who uses their phone like 90% of you all. The smoothness, camera and battery are better in my use then all the devices I listed. I love all these big name YouTube reviewers and watch them to get informed on devices before I buy them but they've all ruined their credibility after all this Pixel bashing.
I like this review that's real and true. For those hating on the phone, "The Google Pixel 4 XL wasn't made for you".

I think it's because Google failed to impress in many ways. The Pixel 4 is such a disappointment. I really like stock Android. I've had 3 Google phones in a row (Nexus 5, Nexus 5X and currently a Pixel 2 XL). I have always upgrades phones every two years so I was ready for an upgrade. Now I don't know what to do. At this point I'm leaning towards trying to hang on for another year and hope the Pixel 5 isn't a disappointment.

The price. We can all agree it's overpriced right? They went for we're premium for Android but "cheaper" than Apple's Pro line approach and it didn't work.
They're gonna either need to drop the price $100 or make up their game like starting 128 GB, brighter screen, wide angle lens, video recording improvements, and at least 3500 mAh on the regular and 4000 mAh on the XL and keep the same price or maybe up it only $50.

It's priced just fine.
Screen is plenty bright even in direct sunlight.
Who actually needs a wide angle lens unless you're a photographer then buy a real camera?
What improvements exactly for video recording? I haven't had issues with video recording.
Battery is plenty on the XL. I'm averaging over 6hrs of SOT which is way may than the OnePlus 6T I came from.
Have you actually used a Pixel yourself and held it in your hand to make these accusations or just going based on the Apple Pro fan boys reviews on YouTube?

Guess you didn't read my signature? I have had the device for a week and yes, it's overpriced for what it's offering or lacking.
Screen is only 436 nits compared to 800-1000 Samsung and iPhones get.
Nobody needs astrophotography and it's got that. I do use an ultra wide angle lens attachment on my Pixel 2 XL and plan to with my 4 XL. I don't want to carry a "real" camera because I like the computational photography Pixel phones do and the portability.
Video is missing 24 FPS and 60 FPS and HDR like iPhone 11 has. I don't need the FPS but their videos look amazing. And their stabilization has leaped over the Pixel. No I don't want a gimbal.
I had better battery on my 2 XL getting 6-7 hours with the occasional 8 hours SOT. And that's with 24 or so off the charger. I've gotten 5-6 hours SOT on the 4 XL. That's pretty weak.
You're giving a lot of excuses for things that are standard on a flagship device in 2019.

I thought you were the other person I quoted. So then sell yours and go buy a Samsung or Apple? If all those features are that important to you.
I guess I don't get the logic that just because the iPhone or Samsung has it, means that it's missing from the Pixel.

Why's it gotta be all or nothing? I can't criticize my own phone? I can admit is lacking compared to the competition. It's not important enough to me to sell it. I'm all for the Google ecosystem and great software experience.

Because that's what competition does. Pixel phones lead in computational photography and look what Apple did with their stills this year. They lacked our Night Site and now their Night Mode is even better with a lot less night sky noise.
I'm willing to pay the premium for the smoothest Android experience but if you don't even agree that the device is lacking things for the price, aka it's overpriced, you're in denial. Neither of you have justified the prices for the Pixel.

Now I'm starting to remember why I don't participate on xda much anymore. Every thread somehow turns into some kind of childish debate haha. Pretty silly.
I don't know why I need to justify a purchase on an internet forum. I mean I freely gave up my money for something I wanted. I think that's justified. I don't live by reviews and specs alone.
I had the s10+. I purchased the Pixel 4xl. I liked the Pixel better and kept it over the s10+. That's all the justification I need. :good:
I have a Moto Z Play at the moment and as much as I like it, it is still on Oreo and is not up to date security-wise, which is a worry for me.
I was very set on a Pixel 3a which I can get for £299 with a £50 mastercard giftcard as a freebie. I have since seen a few posts on forums saying they get really slow after a few months and lag a lot, which is strange because my Moto Z Play still mostly performs fine, bit for stutter, but for a cheap phone it is fine.
I am wondering if I wait for the 4a to come out and spend maybe £400/£429 (whatever they price it at) for that, or just get the 3a, with the view that if I don't like it, I can return it in the first 2 weeks.
I don't really want to spend £400 on a phone ideally, as I don't really see the point.
Could some users of the 3a for a while give me some idea of how it performs after time?
I use my phone for YouTube, Chrome, Netflix, new apps and emails. Never play games on my phone unless it is a basic casual one that i'll play for 10 minutes and then delete.
(I know the new iPhone SE is out for £419 and will be worlds better than both of the Pixels' but I prefer Android overall and would rather not be locked to iOS.)
I'd appreciate any help, thanks
Edit - Just an insight in my phone history... i did have a OnePlus 6 for a while, but decided I preferred the Moto Z Play, so I sold the OP6. The performance difference didn't bother me and with my usage, didn't seem very noticeable. I just want mostly smooth and reliable.
Hello,
I've had mine for about 10 weeks now and I couldn't be happier with it - came from almost exclusively Samsung S range (3,4,5,7) and a moto x style in there as well.
'pure' android is a delight to behold. Still quick and responsive - boot time is about 2 seconds slower than when it was brand new. I've just checked and I currently have nearly 80 apps installed so that's to be expected.
It's a bit like a car/bike/desktop/whatever in that occasional maintenance is your friend ? I use Ccleaner and Greenify paid version. Rooted, EXKernel Manager, no twrp as on android 10 and it doesn't work on 10 yet. Took a little bit of adjustment to not having twrp as I liked to take a weekly backup but no big deal in the grand scheme of things - I'm still in love with the 'pure' android experience and not having all the extra **** bundled in from Samsung.
Few advisories I'd point out is that: I would have bought a 3XL if I could have afforded one, and the modding scene is pretty quiet but I have gathered 2 main learnings on that. Firstly, that'll probably change when the twrp devs get it up and running on android 10, and B, there is actually very little need to mod as the 'pure' android is just lovely as it is.
I've had no errors, no restarts/bootloops etc and re-rooting after updates is simple. I get a day battery no probs with moderate use, no games and using EXKernel Manager to alternate between Performance and Power saving settings as required. Camera is lovely. Wired headphone volume is a bit quiet but stick Viper4android on it and problem solved.
Happy to answer the odd question or 2 if you have any ?

Thanks for that.
Would you say it has gotten any slower after 2+ months?
Most of the reports I have read have said that it lags on the keyboard a lot and lags a lot in general. I wouldn't expect flagship performance, but I do want something that is mostly smooth and will browse the web without being a stuttery mess all the time.
Nah no lag for me but I use a 3rd party keyboard (SwiftKey) instead of Gboard. I use a lot of voice recognition for typing as well as the on screen keyboard.

I've had a 3a since I got rid of the 3 XL in December. I don't notice any slowdowns or performance difference even with games to the 3 XL I had. I take care of my devices though and remove unused apps and keep caches/storage clear as needed. Cloud storage is your friend. Most ppl just install dozens of apps and games and complain their device got slow but don't actually maintain their device. If you maintain your device it will perform well for you. I also get in the habit of factory resetting devices once or twice a year to freshen them up it literally takes 10 minutes if you keep backups of apps and data.
I personally think the 4a will be the better choice in the long run if you intend keeping your phone for a while, that being said the Pixel 3a is still a great phone I got rid of my Samsung S10e couple of weeks ago & picked up another Pixel 3a & i have no regrets at all coming back & downgrading somewhat spec wise, I still may pickup a 4a when the deals are on at some point later this year.
Also the release of the iPhone SE 2020 could be a good thing for future deals on the Pixel 4a.
Got the 3a with me now.
So far, so good! An added bonus is that it has WiFi calling, which I thought it did not.
Display is nice, size is good. Feels nice without a case on, but not sure I'm brave enough to run it without a case!
Speed seems fine, smooth and quick enough for me so far
Similar question...
I'm a Sony fanboy, have nearly all flagships since 2011 here, more or less good maintained with custom fws, i donated devices to devs here at xda, i'm a supporter.
My provider offers me to get a Pixel 3A or a Pixel 4 when i extend my contract for 2 years, the Pixel 3A would cost 11,50 € per month, the Pixel 4 20,00 €, in both cases the the mobile belongs to me after this 24 additional months. I really dunno how to decide, i read and read and read about the pros and cons, the results are all the same - take the 3A, says the tests and suggestions in the www. I'm not a gamer, no facebook, taking not much photos, not involved in social networks, i need pure functionality, navigation, good battery life, playing only CoC, NFS no Limits. The only advantage in the Pixel 4 which i see - it is newer. It's really hard for me to decide - any opinions are welcome. Thanks in advance. At least the fact that i dont really NEED a new phone, my 2 daily drivers are an Xperia Z3 and an S5Neo, both active ( private and business device ) with LOS 16 rock stable, smooth and fast systems. LOS 17.1 is coming for these 2 devices, i think with official status too.
So, that's all, please enlighten me.

Well, whereas I am quite happy with my 3a, my rule for buying (any) tech stuff is to but the best that you can afford at the time. I got my 3a cos it was the best I could afford at the time but if I'd had the money, I would have gotten a 3xl or a 4. Sorry if this isn't helpful, just thought I'd share a bit of my process. I guess the conclusion would be if you can afford the 4, then get the 4

Glad you like it, I prefer to have mine in a case as well (clumsy) so I just got a gel tpd case and screen protector on ebay. Screen protector covers the entire front including the bezels. It's done a stellar job so far - I keep lots of stuff in my pockets and there isn't so much as a scuff on my phone if you'd like I might be able to link the screen protector if I can find it in my ebay history ?
Link to screen protector:

I have a caseology parralax case and a generic glass screen protector now, feels much safer!
So far the battery life on this is incredible, took it off the charger at 8pm Sunday evening, I still have 45% left at 3 hours of SOT.
That's will very weak/no reception for a lot of that too.
Given how small the battery is, it's really quite impressive
Really impressed with this phone so far.
The only issue I am having with my 3a is that I have always used Messenger lite (Facebook) for my messaging app. For some reason, a lot of the time the notifications don't show up after the phone has been locked for a while, until I go into the phone and it picks it up or sometimes until I go into the app.
I have notifications turned on and see no reason for them not to always come through and be visible on the lockscreen. Is this just the Doze feature being a bit too aggressive?
Ah I can't answer that, sorry. I use greenify to sleep my apps, including
social media apps. I only want to use them when I want to use them, you know?
So mine stay asleep until I open them manually.
That is okay. It doesn't do it all the time, I think it's mostly when the phones been sat idle for a while.

You can exclude the fb messanger app from doze (battery optimization) in settings, its in apps and notifications -> special app access, in batter optimization choose to ahow all apps.
Maybe that helps. But could also be an fb bug.
Cheers. Glad you like that phone, for ne it's the best phone i ever had, it just works.
For some reason this second charge has started off worse. I suppose it'll take a few days to fully settle and let the adaptive battery feature set up.

It will settle in a day or 2, youve got to remember that in the first few days of a new toy there's all the setting up/copying data/etc as well but the battery will learn your normal usage. Here's a screen grab from my Better Battery Stats, it's a pretty good %pH.
The annoying thing currently is that I've just changed my bedroom in my house, there is currently no cell or WiFi reception in it, so it dropped 15% last night because it was searching for them all night. Hoping to sort the WiFi in a few days
