Android Pie officially announced on the LG V20

UPDATE: Official Pie now rolling out on Korean variants (F800K/L/S)
Good news LG V20 owners, it looks like your handset will receive Android 9.0 Pie in the not too distant future after all. While the South Korean company pushed the roll-out of Pie to its successor from Q2 to Q3, there is promise of the V20 receiving its last OS update this quarter with LG reportedly testing a beta build internally.
The LG V20 has had a checkered history of OS updates. The first smartphone to ship with Android 7.0 Nougat has only received one major OS update, with it still being stuck on Android 8.0 Oreo. It took LG until October last year to roll-out Oreo to some V20 variants like the H990DS, with the company then announcing it planned on ending software support the device.
LG subseuently u-turned and promised to deliver Android 9.0 Pie in Q3 2019. The V35 and V40 ThinQ have since received Pie, with the roll-out for the V30 slipping from Q2 to Q3. Beta builds for the V30 and G6 have now appeared online, demonstrating that LG is actively testing Pie for these devices, with people being able to flash these early builds to their handsets if they are feeling brave.
My LG Phones reports that LG is doing the same with the V20, specifically for the South Korean model (F800L). The beta build, called LGF800LAT-V27b-IOT-KR-JUL-08-2019+0, is unavailable to download though, with My LG Phones claiming that it is "not fully optimized". Naturally, this comes as no surprise considering that it is a beta build.
Unfortunately, there is still no word on when LG plans to release a stable Android 9.0 Pie build for the V20 this quarter. While we cannot verify the claims of My LG Phones, the website is often accurate and one of the first to report on LG issuing software updates for its smartphones. Expect LG to stagger the roll-out of Android Pie 9.0 though, with South Korean devices likely receiving the OS update a few weeks or months sooner than other variants. Still, it is promising to hear that LG is actively testing Android 9.0 Pie for the V20, seemingly alongside the V30 and G6. Fingers crossed, V20 owners!

But there was a leaked beta pie firmware that is currently for the Korean variant, and it's ongoing
So there's still a big chance to receive one
And if there isn't well at least we have LOS 16 as our option for pie

After having run my v20 stock for years I took the plunge and went lineage 16. The difference between stock and lineage is night and day. While it's great for people unable or unwilling to go the custom rom path, I don't intend to go back to the bloated mess that is "stock" on my H918

Lineage is so boring imo. no stock camera and I'm also not sure if the DAC is working properly.. Was on lineage two hours and immediately flashed back the stock Rom. But I have to admit that the LG is only my second device now. But this time I didn't flash a custom kernel and no root. Just stock.. It is so much better now. But S9+ is my daily driver now.

That's the beauty of Android we can have the same device and completely different experiences... Now if there was a miui Rom to play with I would be trying that out.

The DAC works on LOS as long as you flash Gamma kernel, although I've heard it's enabled in the stock kernel. I use Gamma + V4A and it's amazing.

My experience with Lineage... or rather Resurrection Remix has been less then stellar. I'm considering going back to stock and then upgrading to Oreo, if it's usable. I'm just worried of getting stuck there if the LG firmware turns out to suck (which wouldn't surprise me...).
I've been able to use several other phones a couple of months at a time, and they have all been much better experiences than I've had with LG, custom ROM or not.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I was considering moving to RR because of the lagginess and battery inefficiency of stock Oreo, but was wary of the bad second screen utilization and the lack of the LG cam. When you say your experience with RR was less than stellar, what all do you have in mind?

Ok... so I was mostly on Android 8 based Resurrection Remix. It was laggy as hell, but... out of nowhere. Like it would be smooth one second and then completely collapse the other. So bad, that unlocking the screen became impossible. Or I could turn on the screen, but it wouldn't react to any input. Taking photos, especially with Gcam, was nearly impossible. It might save the photo, or not. It might take a photo if you press the button, or not. It might take it relatively immediately or it could take up to 10 seconds. Or well, not happen at all. Sometimes you could take a photo, then close the app completely, then take the next photo. Rinse repeat. The behavior was completely random and unreliable, with decent sized crashes along the way. Charging the phone via USB (and some chargers/cables) was impossible, because doing so would drain the battery more than not being plugged in. Sometimes the phone would turn into a space heater for no apparent reason. Second screen support wasn't really worth it either IMHO, because the implementation wasn't as polished as on the stock firmware (mind you I never got past 7).
I'm now on the latest RR (as Lineage just wouldn't boot from a fresh install), and it's... sort of better? The second screen is now just the regular screen, with the left corner being treated as a supersized notch. That's a great use of the space, though I wish on video players it would try to avoid the notch as much as possible. It won't... it's centered. But that's a Google thing. Oh yeah, and Waipu, which I use for TV, won't run properly. Some stations work, some stations (the ones I expect to put more security measures in place) don't.
It ran smooth for the first few hours. Now it has turned into a laggy nightmare again. Well, sometimes. Sometimes it's also smooth and performs as good as you can expect a Snapdragon 820 to perform (which isn't too bad!). But other times... Part of the lag seems to be the notification system, which is currently running amok as I have imported my old SMS and it is keen on showing me every single one of them (to be fair, my last phone, the HUAWEI P30 Pro, did the same after every reboot and it just would not stop). As soon as I put the phone on DND, it seems to perform significantly better.
This is the depressing part. It has decent hardware, I mean, I just got an AnTuTu score of (though the screen froze during a loading screen). This should still be a decent mid range phone. But it behaves like a giant heap of junk. Like a phone that was outdated 10 years ago.
Coming from the P30 Pro, this thing is nothing but frustrating. And while it wasn't so much at the start, it really is now.

Thanks for your detailed answer. An SD 820 certainly shouldn't perform THIS badly. Oneplus devices with the same work as smooth as butter, the difference is night and day. Whatever LG's software team's done to this, is a piece of ****. I'm amazed that they still have their jobs despite creating this hunk of junk. The software is like and obese cow plonked on a sports motorcycle causing it to huff and puff during simple activities.
The worst part is that LG didn't even have the decency to open up sources and make rooting/romming easy, so that others might pick up their slack.

Yes, but the thing is... the custom ROM isn't exactly better either. I think there hardware might be at fault here. Because while the stock ROM performs badly, so do custom ROMs (on the same phone). Unless the software that is at the root of it is used by both, the hardware is simply defective.
I'm getting 104117 in AnTuTu with the V20. Now that isn't spectacular - the P30 Pro did 240k, but it's not too shabby. It's on par with a brand new Samsung Galaxy A30, which I'm pretty sure doesn't break down as badly as the V20.

Hmm.. when you say hardware, the same SD820 is used by others as well like the Oneplus 3, and that's a buttery smooth phone to use even after years of using it, so are there other components that seem to be ****ting the bed in this case?

Yeah. Other components. The internal memory perhaps, which may be worn down? I've had a fast SD card that had areas where it'd slow down considerably, as in 300 kB/s instead of 90 MB/s. Maybe they went with low quality memory chips and implemented them poorly, with no wear leveling. Otherwise perhaps some drivers, that custom ROMs also have to use? It's quite weird.
Oh btw., Bluetooth calls aren't working on Resurrection Remix (both based on Android 8 and 9). It's quite annoying...

LG V20 in manufactured very poor, as wvidence..
My LG V20 is produced back in 2016 and known as one of the early production of this device, I can say that this device tend to heat very fast and have a really poor heat management.. Even my full of hatred Ip6S can last longer than my V20.. this is really pathetic..
Before I've move on to V30 and finally got stuck with these Huawei, I intended to dissamble the device and I found out that the thermal paste has dried out.. Even worse, there is only a very little amount of thermal paste placed on top of SoC.. I knew by replacing the paste should fix my issue but my V20 ( not my iP6S ) is my main device atm and I don't have spare time to do this..
I don't what LG thinking back then but for sure, V20 is one of the device I think that have a potential since it have some of the feature that won't exist nowadays such as a useful second screen ( for me at least ), removable battery, a 3.5mm jack, IR blaster, expandable memory and more..
but yes, LG is stupid..

I don't have any issue with LG UX, I'll love the LG UX actually compared to UX2, 3 and 4.. UX5 and above is fitted with my taste..
The home have a capabilities to make all icon unified if you choose rounded square, then everything will be a rounded square which this option doesn't exist on my Huawei P30 Pro ( I'm miss this option )..
the Camera is easy to navigate with swipe option and second screen.. everything comes in handy, also those manual control interface.. I'll loved it !
Not bothering to implement the portrait feature on this phone is okay since we have Gcam here.. Even V30 doesn't have that.. So, I keep my eyes closed on this one..
BUT.. too bad. Here's come another LG stupidity.. The first phone to be manufactured with Android Nougat is the last one to receive the Android Oreo.. and now Pie.. They even stated so many f**kin time to stop maintaining this device.. How could they do this? Ok, so I've managed to get Lineage running (maybe I picked the wrong Gapps version). It works a lot better than ResurrectionRemix. For example Bluetooth works, with only tiny break-ups versus RR, which made me sound like I was an a WWII-era tank calling for support. The brightness slider works. The performance so far is smoother. etc. For some reasons the changes in RR seems to have broken the underlying Lineage. Fingers crossed it stays this way.
I'm still not going to buy another LG phone though... I think. Even if they fix the software. Mostly for the camera, because I think they've screwed up there.

What to enable or disable to make it less aggressive?

Hi,
I have the same problem and it is f*** annoying! I have the 8GB version of the OP7pro and I don't know why the phone always closes my apps after a certain amount of time. I have disabled all (as far as I know) battery optimization features and also disabled the RAM booster.
In parallel I still run a Galaxy Note 3 with a really old custom rom, which has started to act a bit buggy now, but this phone does not overwrite MY settings and kills apps I want to keep open.
Does anyone know how to get rid of this behavior? Or is the only way to flash a custom rom again? I don't know if it is related to Oxygen OS or Android 9.

This is the problem with Chinese oems. Aggressive ram management, notification problems, not quite there cameras. Having the hardware is one thing. Software r & d is something else.

Can't remember exactly where I read it but...OnePlus is supposedly working on an update to "fix" the problem with aggressive killing of background apps as a result of all the complaints they receive concerning this issue. Something that can possibly help along with shutting off all battery/ram management is to lock your open apps to keep them open. While scrolling through your open apps you will see a three dot menu in the top right corner and one of the options is to "lock" the app which is supposed to lock it in memory/RAM. YMMV

Are we sure this isn't a Pie issue? I just came from a pixel 3xl and had the same issues in the beginning. Everyone blamed the 4gb RAM as the culprit. Google eventually updated a Fix but it wasn't 100% fixed. It was better but apps still closed to early. So maybe we're looking at an Android problem. Who knows

This is totally crap, I switched from my Note 3, which I still like very much (but only with AOSP based custom ROM) to OP because I don't like the way Samsung and Huawei gone to. I'm not rooted right now, so I can not tell what can be done with Magisk Modules or Xposed Modules (or other mods) on a Oxygen based ROM.
Can someone tell if this behavior can be stopped with mods or is the only way to switch to an AOSP based ROM again?
I wanted to give Oxygen OS a try but right now I'm not fully convinced with the current situation, even if OP is one of the fastest supplier for updates. I don't like it, when a manufacturer tells me what I can do with a device and what not. At least OP should give me the choice how strict the RAM management is and when I want to get apps closed.
Missing notifications is one other big point. Due to the fact that there is no notification LED and no AOD (STILL) I tried several third party apps to get a AOD, but the battery drain on this apps is heavy as f*** and they often do not work correctly, because the system prevents them to run correctly.
Does anyone know a good way to get a reliable way for notifications?

Not only that. 3rd party apps like notification buddy work but Google Assistant stops working once you install it. I don't know what GA has to do with notification lighting. It's supposed to be a phone first and foremost. OnePlus seems to have forgotten what it is they're making. Something as basic as missed notifications seems not terribly important to them.

I agree. Samsung and Huawei show that AOD can work without heavy battery drain, so why can't OP get this to work or can they but don't want it?
I will root the device and have a look what I can optimize.
What I cannot change (unfortunately I had no chance to hands on the device before I bought it) is the size and the weight. It is to big and way to heavy. Not only while taking a phone call, even if you just hold it in one hand and do some stuff, it gets heavy within a very short time.
Maybe this OP was my first and last one - I will see. But it seems that all devices get bigger and heavier with every iteration, which is totally insane.

It's definitely a pie thing as Android 10 had much better ram management even on pixel 2xl with 4gb ram. I suspect it will resolve most of our problems.

I have a problem with the weight as well, like my previous note 9. I got the s10+ after that, before being enticed by all the YouTube reviews of the 7pro at launch. I'm beginning to regret that decision. Dual speakers are no where near the s10+ and neither is video stabilisation. I'm on the beta 2 now, rooted and the experience is beginning to improve. Sure there are pros like the fast charging, display and the quick implementation of android 10. I can't justify the note 10 and all the year end releases with SD 865 round the corner so I guess I'll just have to put up with it.

You're on Beta software...what do you expect? I'm on stable and all is working fine. I'm on T-Mobile but using an unlocked 7 Pro purchased from OnePlus directly.

Did you actually read what I wrote? The experience has improved on android 10.

i had the s10+ and i couldnt deal with the half bakes software. so oneplus was the natural choice for me.
sure the speakers arent the best but theyre plenty fine - its not like we use our speakers for hidef sound, wireless headphones or a jukebox can take care of the rest (i have these strategically placed around the house so its never an issue when i play music)
failing AOD, dt2w is just as good imo.

sure the speakers arent the best but theyre plenty fine - its not like we use our speakers for hidef sound, wireless headphones or a jukebox can take care of the rest (i have these strategically placed around the house so its never an issue when i play music)

If you use Magisk, make sure to flash Ainur Sauron. That's an absolute game-changer for audio quality. I can't say the audio will quite compare to the Note 9 (I own it), but it should be fairly comparable to the S10+ (Have two in the family). The Note 9 has the advantage of actual front-facing speakers since it has bezel.
If you want to use Viper or JamesDSP, you'll need to also flash AML in Magisk which allows for multiple audio mods to be integrated. If you want a simple flash and away w/o further customization, then just flash Ainur Sauron.

Idea if flagship killer was very cool to me so I really fall in love with OnePlus. I became part of community and I really want to help OnePlus to became really killer.
Today, after 4 Oneplus phones I am really disappointed, Oneplus became expensive top brand, flagship company. Rolling out Android 10 without serious testing for company's most expensive phone is most selfish and irresponsible move I ever seen. Looks like to me whole company working on Oneplus 7T Pro, and no one cares too much about "old" phone. This morning I was late for my work because alarm did not ring?! I don't know reason, I don't care why, I am user of 800€ phone and I don't expect that.

I'm running official GM21AA on my GM1913 for 2 days, no root, just stock phone.
So far I noticed this problems:
- This morning my alarm did not ring?!
- After that disappointing situation I notices mobile data was off, so I have to turn it on manually
- Choppy audio on Bluetooth in my car ( I have to keep screen on for normal reproduction)
- Horizon Light don't work at all
- During Viber video call, video connection shuts down every few minutes, so I have to turn off then on video call constantly.
- Battery life was very nice first day, but second became terrible. Btw I have no issue with Viber, alarm clock, mobile data and Car Bluetooth during first day of using Android 10.
Any suggestions beside rolling back on Android P or selling and leaving OnePlus and back to Pixel phone

Why not do some research? There are a dozen things you can try to fix your issues. I updated from Stable 9 to 10 using Oxygen Updater and I have none of the issues you have so what is the difference? Maybe you have one or more apps that are not playing well with 10? Maybe you need to uninstall them and reinstall them so that they work better with 10? Maybe you need to do a factory reset (yes it is a pain) and DO NOT let your apps automatically reinstall from Google, to see if that fixes your issues? Or you could just sell the phone and go back to a Pixel! Then when you have the same types of issues with your Pixel you can complain on their forums about bugs and issues that you are not willing to try and fix. Solved!

NO. Still doesn't have wireless charging (which I miss A LOT) and the camera software is still not good.

Given the A53 is a "budget" device with low end hardware, the best you can really do is run a "clean" OS with as little bloat as possible. There isn't much that will make your device faster besides reducing what is running at any given time.

Thank you these usefull advise. i will try it asap and will feedback that what is the result.

This phone was definitely slower when I first got it. It took a few days of use for it to get adjusted. I also always replace the launcher with nova, keyboard with gboard, and messages with signal.
Then I use ADB to remove a couple of stupid packages. Like anything Facebook related any of the AR packages, apps that I don't use (why the hell does Samsung have two messaging apps on a phone stock?).
I came from the OnePlus 6t and I feel like this device is only a minor upgrade overall. In the end that's kind of all I was looking for because the 6t still ran great.
I do notice some poor responsiveness in the touch screen from time to time (although that seems to be getting better each day) and I definitely noticed a pretty big delay when I use voice to text. It definitely takes a second to fire up the mic which leads to it picking up where I'm talking mid sentence.
I may yank out more of the Samsung system apps as time goes on. For the moment I'm enjoying the Bixby routines because it's keeping me from needing to install Tasker. I recommend everyone try that at their own risk. Do some research first but there are a lot of system apps and processes that Samsung preloads in here that always run in the background sucking up precious RAM. I say try it at your own risk because if you uninstall the wrong applications you can mess your phone up pretty bad.

Also Facebook is a big resource hog. Even on an iPhone 13 it can stutter occasionally or even freezes specially in marketplace and makes the phone run hot. If you don't mind using the mobile version I would highly recommend using that instead the app.

I also think there is better devices for less mOney that even offer more but probably never get those 4 software updates. I agree 100% about facebook. I stopped using the app shortly after they first released it LOL. I find it much much easier to just use the mobile website.
I was looking at some Chinese devices as well before settling on this. One of the reasons I went with the a53 5G is compatibility with T-Mobile's 5G in my area. Also the software and support factored in. I was lucky enough to have my 6t for almost 4 years. That's the longest I've ever had a smartphone for and I really enjoyed being able to get that much lifespan out of a inexpensive device compared to the competition. The promise of support for this device led me to choose it even though it's only a mild upgrade from what I had before.

It is laggy because Samsung picked the weaker hardware for this phone (even though it sells for mid range price, there is no SD778 or Exynos 1080 or Dimensity 1200). As others said you could disable things and only use 60Hz screen. But if you haven't bought it yet you can buy the A52s which will be smoother.

Did removing these packages help performance? I am going back and forth about whether to return the phone or not (the camera is unusable at the moment - but hopefully that changes with software updates - I am yet to receive the April update). Thanks.

Removing packages helped free up some RAM. I'm definitely not experiencing the level of lag you're describing and the camera seems fine compared to my 6t.
This phone is half the price of most flagship devices. I'm not sure what your expectations are for such a device. Perhaps you should get a better device, or wait for the new oneplus Nord and see how it's performs.

I'm confused. I don't have Facebook on my A53 or ADB wasn't needed if it was originally (and not system app). Did you grab a carrier one? That would explain it to me. Not seeing lag on my unlocked A53.
If you grabbed an unlocked one then I don't know why you'd have lag unless it had a physical issue or you use something I don't use that causes it.

Enable developer options and disable all animations should fix this without the need for installing a 3rd party launcher or other software.

Hmmm, the camera takes about 1 to 2 seconds to take a photo, and sometimes doesn't take a photo at all and because of the lag I often miss the photo opportunity because I am waiting to see if it worked (daytime photos). The rest is manageable, but still laggier then my old S9+, I at least thought it would match that performance (I don't game, so only day to day use performance is important for me). Seems like my phone is unusually slow, maybe something went wrong when transferring over from s9+ and I should start fresh with a factory reset! Everything else about the phone is great, so I will persevere . A few software updates should hopefully smooth things out. Thanks for the help/suggestions.

If its only the camera from press to saved then the April update should mostly if not fully solve that. You have the April update yet or not?
For me it seems to be under a second after April update. Pre-April it was more like 3-5 seconds.
Not really something I would have cared that much about either way lol. Just have to get used to it.

I've had this phone almost a week now.. I have SwiftKey as my kb...
Can't say I've noticed any type of lag on this device... 120hz, dark mode background services running, wifi calling on you name it.
What are y'all even all the reviewers doing to experience lag??

A53 is not a "Budget" device. It is mid level. Samsung's budget devices are the A1#, A2# and A3# phones.

General Opinion about (Unofficial) Pixel Experience Plus for Veux/Peux

This is my first time using a pixel experience rom infact it's also my first time using any Android 12 rom and it's also my first time using an AOSP based rom, so please bare with me if I look absolutely stupid (i already apologize for that)
Just flashed the unofficial pixel experience plus on my poco X4 pro
here are some stuff i like and don't like about the rom
I flashed it using adb sideload with lineage unoffical recovery for the device
Before anyone asks yes it also works for the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G (Since when did naming phones become similiar to writing a dictionary?)
This build of pixel experience plus uses the perf kernel which is somewhat okay for performance
Rooting - Rooting a pixel experience rom or any GSI rom is harder than rooting Miui roms but i guess for you guys it's not that hard...
Performance - I'm sorry but for some reason I could not get Antutu Bench Mark to run on the device with pixel experience installed
Everytime I tried to install the Antutu benchmark 3d apk it would give me an apk parsing error I've tried rebooting several times but cannot find a solution yet
Miui Eu used to give me around 360k - 390k
Though I could not get Antutu Benchmark to run on the device i can definitely feel it being much smoother and by using an fps meter in high demanding games such as cod mobile i can see a difference in fps
For some reason no fps unlocker could unlock 120 fps for cod mobile on miui but somehow it works on the pixel experience plus
Also with pixel experience plus you can set CPU Freq and GPU Freq to max without it reverting back just like Miui (I do not recommend doing this as it is not good for the processor)
UI - This is obvious but Pixel Experience Plus is much much better, the animations are smooth the full screen gestures have no problems
Battery Backup - Yeah unfortunately it's worser than Miui but not by a crazy margin
Fast Charging - This is where pixel experience plus lags behind the fast charging isn't as fast as it was on Miui
Touch Issues - This is a very rare occurance but there are ghost touches occuring especially when the phone is left in idle state with screen on for some time
Sound Quality - Noticeably worser than Miui sadly...
Bloatware - very few like chrome (some people like chrome being installed though but i personally use brave browser) but you can easily remove it by the several methods u can find on the forum or through YouTube
Camera - it comes installed with Gcam Go and the photo quality is good but you should probably use Gcam itself
Proximity Sensor - Broken, phone screen stays on during calls
Bluetooth calling: Broken, causes phone to crash
Data/Wifi Connectivity - I can feel my wifi being a little bit slower on this device compared to my other but it could just be a me thing
SafetyNet - Passes by default
Overall - Great if you don't like heavy customisations, raw performance, a little bit slower charging (which is actually good for your battery) and material you theming
What do I miss from Miui?
Game Turbo - Although Pixel Experience Plus has a game mode inbuilt it's no way as good as Miui Game Turbo
Floating Windows - I guess there is no beating Miui when it comes to Floating Windows...
Would appreciate if anyone knows any kind of fixes to my problems mentioned above...

How is the camera resolution in gcam /pixel expirience ? In miui I never get more then 12mp, never the 108mp like with the original cam

I'm using Pixel Experience 13, and the camera takes 12.0MP 3000x4000 resolution.

Is the proximity sensor still broken even now in 2023?

@BR4UTAL do you plan any further releases, as the official ROM has still no updates yet? I think many of us users of this phone are desperate for a stable release plan. Maybe you can connect to the official maintainer and share your work via the PE offical channels.
