Merry Christmas everybody!
I've noticed that with the last update, P20 camera processes the pictures even more than before, especially outdoors in the shade or with overcast. Colors sometimes look like friggin pastel paintings, it looks too over processed and saturated. Does everyone feel the same way with the camera? Which app do you use that doesn't use Huawei's outrageous processing algorithm?

I don't even have AI activated and still the processing algorithm is, on many pictures, exaggerated to say the least.
Lol i find it amazing that nobody else notices this feature with the P20 camera
Anyway, the P20 is still a great photography phone
Yes it is, but it still doesn't change the fact that it sometimes it ridiculously over-saturates colours. Anyway, thanks for all the insightful replies, smh
If you use pro mode the processing seems to lessen a bit, imo. Another option is to use pro mode, capture raw, and process it yourself afterwards.
Honestly some of the photos that came out of the stock camera mode were ridiculous (too much sharpening and saturation), but I was satisfied with pro mode. I don't bother with raw anymore though. Processing it yourself is quite time consuming and each .dmg photo is around 20mb in size, if you care about storage. Fantastic camera, let down by Huawei's awful software and processing.

So if you simply switch to Pro Mode even if u don't fiddle with any setting, it processes the photo less? Ok, i will give it a try. I also sometimes use Open Camera and Bacon Camera which seems to lessen that over-processing but not by much.

I gave that app a try before.
For HDR, definitely better than Camera360. Camera360's HDR appears to be HDR in name only, not a real HDR effect.
I didn't really like HDR Camera though. I use Pro HDR Camera for HDR photos now.

No, in terms of speed.
As someone who enjoys experimenting with HDR with my "real" DSLR camera, I've tried both; I think Pro HDR is honestly better in final image quality, plus it allows post processing. It has it's good points.
HOWEVER, when I shoot HDR with my DSLR, I use a tripod. Can't use that on the phone. And by the time I rig up something using duct tape and sticks, my subject is no longer "right there." The only reason I shoot with my phone is that I always have it "on the spot!"
HDR camera is definitely better when it comes to image alignment(meaning that your images are going to be MUCH blurrier in PHC with normal camera shake; I tested in the most low key environment possible, with my elbows resting on a table taking a picture of an object, still some blur). The post processing feature in PHC can be basically duplicated with a number of free apps. As someone who doesn't mind paying a developer for a bug-free product (I spend time earning money, if you save me time by being convenient, well...), it's not about the paid/free aspect.

I've only used it for these sort of shots, so I'm not sure of it's long-term functionality.

I feel like you just said the stuff I wanted to say but couldn't manage to find the words for.
Like I said before, I find Pro HDR definitely better in image quality, but the other stuff... well I'm bad with words so let's just say I almost never use Pro HDR Camera for picture taking except on certain occasions. Or for some "fun" photos where I a friend is in the picture in one photo then moves out of the picture or goes to another position during the second shot to see this ghost effect. Looks pretty cool.
I think about the Night Camera you were talking about, the reason it might be a clone of HDR Camera might be because its by the same developer.
The only camera I use at night time is this Night Effect with Camera360. Though, I find the other effects good during night time too.
I dont know if other users agree with me but my old Nexus6P was way better on low light conditions. In outdoor situations at a sunny day there is no problem, with most phones but the S8+ has a really good camera but if i try to take a picture when the sun has set and the light is low the software makes the pictures really fuzzy. The faces are washed out (i am aware that the software is trying to reduce the noise) and its not that great at auto mode. I took great low light pictures with the manual mode and this is something missing on the nexus 6p and pixels but if i want to take a quick picture at low light i cant start setting up the manual mode i just want to take a quick photo. So at this point my question is, is there any way to install the google photo apk with the hdr+ mode? I dont really know if something like this would work or if its even possible, but i really miss the hdr+ from the google phone.

I also came from the 6p and gotta admit I was totally amazed with the 6p's camera in both low light and day time shooting. I still have not taken much pictures with my s8 plus yet, so I can't really compare the difference in an night out experience, but hope to soon. From around the house shooting the camera seems good, I want to say slightly better than the 6p in low light. I really like the zero shutter lag of the s8 though, even though I had the ZSL mod on the 6p. Your pictures do look pretty fuzzy and not clear on the s8 though. Probably a dumb question, but it's your camera lens clean?

Never had the 6P but I have the Nexus6 and I must say for a phone going on 3 years old it still has a nice shooter (using an app called Manual Camera).
Semi pro skill set with photography here, never liked auto anything.
Your pictures look exactly like mine and I too am disappointed with the S8+ auto Camera shooting. I am coming from a LG G4 and my pictures were amazing on that camera. I would frame them people were shocked they were from a camera phone. My S8+ does great in bright sunny light, but in side/low lighting conditions the pictures are very washed out/lack detail.
I'm also feeling the same. The auto settings are so shonky, my LG G3 had better auto settings. When there's proper lighting it's crisp as anything, also with the flash. When it's low light like this, mine look exactly the same, it's like they have the skin smoothing on the selfie camera but for everything... Also!!!! I've noticed that there still seems to be a bit of grain / not so sharp even in light. I really do feel like my G3 produced better images. Haven't played with manual but like... I feel like I shouldn't have to. Auto should be banging!
I'd have to agree. My iPhone 7 plus beats this camera when it comes to quickness, ease of use, and consistency. Not too impressed.

ye i double check it every time i run in a situation like that. I am not using the fingerprint sensor tho but i still check if its clean and in those situations you see its 100% clean

as i said earlier the manual mode is better but you cant tell people or friends "wait let me set it up" so i can take 1 picture. the point of the auto mode is to take quick good picture. You are totaly right about the manual mode, ive taken very very good pictures with it but its not fast to set it up, eventualy you will lose the moment
Iphone camara sucks, buy tk each their own. Maybe i got a good S8+.

Try taking the SAME shot with both phones. Can't say much looking at totally different shots. I do notice the S8+ tends to overexpose a little bit. So if you were shooting in the dark, it would try to get a brighter exposure resulting in a higher ISO and lower quality images.

Exactly trying to compare totally different pictures taken in different places under different conditions is pointless.
I had a 6P for a long time and it had the best camera of any nexus device by light years but just doesnt compare to the S8 camera.
I had a note 5 at the same time as the 6P and the note 5 camera eas better than the 6P so....

As they aim to replace the traditional point-and-shoot camera, it would be nice to have similar pre-set manual mode settings remembered. Then you could set up your perfect "in the pub with mates" manual settings and switch to it quickly without all the sillybuggers of camera phone manual mode faff.
Edit: As an afterthought, what you could do is utilise an app I use called SyncMe. What this does is automatically copy all new photos from my phone to a specified folder on my NAS every day when I connect to my home network and plug in a charger. You simply set the phone to take RAW, and add a filter to this rule to MOVE (instead of copy) any RAW file extensions so your phone doesn't fill up.
Then, if you ever find yourself wanting a nice photo of a night out but the Jpeg is bad, you can hop onto your network and find the RAW equivalent and get editing.
Use pro mode for low light. The higher the iso, the brighter the picture but will leave your photo more grainy.
The lower the shutter speed, the brighter your photo but will require a steady hand or a tripod, and a still target.
Combine these with some editing.

This is what I get Everytime I try to take a shot indoor. Little movement and the photo comes out very blurry. I don't get why reviewers didn't notice this. Wasn't getting this result in the 6P.

I've also come from IPhone 7+ and that camera seemed so good compared to this but the s7edge camera seemed the best I've seen but this doesn't seem as good as them
In poor lighting so everyone will take pictures, in general a normal camera

Have you tried to use Tracking AF? Also try lock the focus on the subject and then let it move and take the picture and see if its still blurry not sure but you might have defective camera sensor

Hi everyone,
I am not talking about the distortion issue here.
I just got my device and have taken a few quick photos, mostly on AUTO. For some reason some of the photos look extremely grainy and of low quality, others seem better. To be honest I don't know what to make of it. I will have to do some more tests in better light conditions but to be honest I was quite shocked how bad some photos look in comparison to my GFs Huawei P10 for example. My HTC M9 photos felt more sharp.
It feels like Xperia is going crazy with the post processing and blurring/graining everything up. Just look at the computer desk photo, it looks like someone overused photoshop filters.
I have attached a few photos for reference.

No, it's not just you. I have no idea how reviewers ended up calling the camera "one of the best shooters around". Considering this is a flagship device, the camera sucks. Plain and simple. I'm getting more n more pi**** I didn't chose the S8 and put my trust in Sony.
I get the same results on the Sony camera app. Try to use Open Camera, at least for me the difference is very big, especially on detail.
The Post processing is totaly random and hilarious. Currently using Open camera and snap camera. There ist still some unwanted Post processing but Not as much as before.

Haven you happened to find out why in manual mode one can only go up to 1/10s exposure time?
Hey guys
since my wife broke her Note1 I was kind if happy to trade my N4 against a S8plus. But I am so disappointed with the camera which is one of the reason for me to spend so much money.
The raw is kind of ok.
But in+0 EV pictures are way too dark I think.
The jpg resolution seems awful with artifacts - I dont recall this from the Note 4.
What especially drives me crazy is that the app reduces the shutter speed in a way it is not possible to take sharp pics of stationary objects let alone moving ones. Its like only 20-30perc seem keepers.
Does anybody know how to force the app to not go beyond like 1/30h? If I use pro mode and set the shutter speed ISO looses automatic thus this mode is a joke. I cant set the ISO as well when shooting kids. The app also forgets the pro mode after closing it - so annoying.
I know I need to show examples but I just bought an office and dont have time atm. But maybe someone shares my dissappointment and maybe some guy/gal has a work around?

Seems strange you are having photo quality issues. Across the board the s8 camera gets great reviews. You tried using open camera for a bit more control of the photos?

Compared it to the pixel 2 and seriously that damn hdr on the google side is just insane.
P20 Pro loses alot of details even in normal shots.
Even in night shots pixel 2 captures so many details.
For some reason the ai also stands in the way, greenery mode especially cranks up the shadows and so many details are lost
I am kinda disappointed in the camera department.
Hopefully huawei will work on a better hdr in their future updates.
Pixel 2 is still the king of smartphone photography, can only imagine what will happen if pixel 3 goes dual cameras.

Cant say that am agree with you,
And i own both phone.

Conclusion is. P20 Pro is not your another point and shoot kind of camera. Its more like a photographer tool. It give you best result when you play around the setting and willing to go through the learning curve of using various camera mode. Not a fully auto like in our pixel 2 :laugh:
I'm very satisfied with the camera. Although I agree that the software can be on the heavy side when sharpening and smoothing areas. Havent tried RAW mode yet, but I'll experiment some more with that later.
Dark shots are amazing when using auto or night mode. I mean, considering doing them without a tripod.

Try Night Mod in daylight it is better then Pixel HDR+. Thats what I see on meny photo comparisons.

You are definitely right! I looked at the original 40 MP photos taken with p20 pro with excitement. I zoomed in and saw that there is no good amount of detail! They looked like low quality 10-12 MP photos! In low light it might take better photos because it has a larger sensor but in low light nope..
I can definitely say that Huawei didn't focus on the "software" enough (shame on Huawei), that's very unfortunate considering this phone has a good camera hardware.

I have Pixel 2 and P20 Pro and disagree. The Pixel has far too omuch noise in indoor lighting, the P20 pro is just as quick at taking the shot and is clearer with less noise.
As for the Night mode... usually it's for buildings and such to get great low light phots... So we scroll... and click... aaaannnd the moment is still there unless the building fell over... haha.
HDR+ on the Pixel is good, but i'm afraid it just got toppled. Even the non HDR shots on the P20 Pro (with AI off) are better in all scenarios.
No issues with the camera, if you are wanting top notch photos then use a dedicated DLSR, the camera on the P20 Pro is the bridge between full on DSLR and Phone camera and does produce some outstanding results, just mess about with the settings, its not like other phone cameras and as a lot more settings/features to play with. I use my DLSR cameras for main photos while my P20 Pro will be for quick snaps when out and about and don't want to carry my main cameras.

its a pity that you still use old software at that time,
.107 bring on much improved auto HDR. much detail are preserved, and it produce more consistent results on various scene now

As for the Night mode... usually it's for buildings and such to get great low light phots... So we scroll... and click... aaaannnd the moment is still there unless the building fell over... haha.
HDR+ on the Pixel is good, but i'm afraid it just got toppled. Even the non HDR shots on the P20 Pro (with AI off) are better in all scenarios.

Ah, i see now. Then i would agree with you,
Pixel 2 XL would suit you much better for this kind of quick snapshot around the house,
using P20 Pro for this kind of shots would be a waste of money. Pixel algorithm do better job on that
Coming from a S8 Plus and Iphone 8 plus. The camera on the Huawei p20 Pro is weak as hell compared to those two.

Coming from every flagship the last two years I have to utterly disagree on your statement. Of course each to their own.
It's not perfect but the the versatility alone is huge. Night mode is certainly not a marketing ploy, it really does work and as advertised!
Can't wait to go on using 4 seconds breaks for a photo at night.
Auto is useless. Everything is over sharpened.

The camera is amazing im sorry but it's the best camera I've ever used in a phone period.
Certain situations call for certain features to be used, but I'm in no way disappointed, it's a complete beast, there isn't a phone on the planet that comes close, perhaps the pixel 2 but only maybe on video.
I am not really disapointed , but for a phone focusing on it's camera so much , i would like some added features.
I'ts nice to have AI available , but sometimes i would like to leave my own personal touch on my photo's. So why not include the AI "modes" into the filters menu ? That way i can pick the mode and strength i want to see , when i want to see it.
Manual HDR mode , effect is only marginal ? can't set any HDR bracketing options.
Sometimes, in high contrast scenes, HDR kick's in automatically , without warning or any way to cancel it. The effect is really pronounced then.
Pro mode : where is the bracketing ? Sharpening settings ? Noise removal settings ?
RAW : is not really raw , there is some weird effect where noise seems to be converted to dancing lines. Lens distortion is removed , but vignetting is still present ?
I also would like to have an option to save the "developed" photo in a lossless format (with some extra bit depth) in stead of JPG.

Wow! that's stark! thanks for posting, it's exactly the type of images I plan to shoot and I was looking for a direct comparison between the Pixel 2 and the P20 Pro when shooting people in dimly lit indoors.
I suppose you had turned beauty mode down to 0, which however did not switch it off in earlier versions of the camera software.
Is the problem still present with the latest camera update (.128)?
Does shooting in Photo mode preserve more detail?

You said it, it's a software problem. The P20 Pro comes with superior camera hardware (a much larger main sensor to start with), so I really don't understand why it has to ruin skin in indoor shots to that extent.
From what users report it's all a matter of not being able to turn beautification off completely.
I've read that since update .128 the overprocessing issue was improved.
Does this also apply to skin?
How would such shots appear if shot in Photo mode, or RAW?
I ask about RAW because apparently Huawei's RAW images are also processed, at least geometrically, e.g. by applying lens distortion correction, so I can't be sure that pixel values are unaltered.
I purchased the P20 Pro specifically for the camera as I'm a professional photographer and want the best IQ out of my always with me smartphone camera. I have owned the P20 Pro for almost two months now and have seen a dramatic improvement in the camera software over that time. The initial, pre 107 firmware was terrible with regard to raw color vignetting and at first I was fairly disappointed. The 107 firmware corrected the raw color vignetting issue, though of course there is still the typical natural vignetting that occurs with a small lens and large sensor (and yes, often the sensor DOES affect vignetting due to how it receives non parallel light rays from the lens). So natural, non color shifting vignetting was not really a surprise and does not bother me at all. I'm very happy with the IQ from 40MP raw images now. It's not going to match my 36MP full frame camera in good light of course but for a smartphone, the P20 Pro is pretty amazing.
Probably my biggest positive surprise with the P20 Pro (beyond the software capabilities of Night Mode) is the quality of the black & white camera. Really nice tonality, no doubt somewhat due to the Leica involvement.
Anyway, I'm now on the 131 firmware and the additional improvements I would like to see are more user control over color saturation, noise reduction and sharpness (and I would also love to be able to tweak how the Master AI option deals with color and color saturation). For the B&W camera, I would really, really love a raw option as well as control of noise reduction and sharpness as I occasionally see where the very aggressive noise reduction completely smooths/ blurs very fine distant detail such as grass.
As far as all the noise about the P20 Pro camera not being as good vs phone X, etc. I would say that there is a higher learning curve to getting the most out of the cameras in the P20 Pro. I see this as the best option for a more experienced user who is looking for the absolute best IQ available today out of a smartphone. For someone looking for the best, "no hassle" snapshots from a smartphone, there may be better options though that does seem to be improving with every firmware update of the P20 Pro.
