Need help migrating data from google pixel OG to note 10 plus - General Questions and Answers

I had the original Google Pixel XL running Android 10. I upgraded a few days ago to a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 + because the battery on the Pixel was dying. I was going to fix it myself but a lot of posts I read regarding replacing the battery I saw people mentioning how it took them around 3 hours, and how a lot of them broke the screen. A new screen costs around $125 on eBay or more last I looked. The battery was only $15 or so. But I didn't want to risk breaking the screen, plus I kind of already wanted something different anyways.
The Note 10 + is running Android 9 where the Pixel is on 10.
Neither are rooted.
I was wondering if someone could recommend some apps so I can copy my apps + data (if possible) to the Note.
I have my apps and stuff backed up on the Google account...
So should I factory reset the note and sign into my Google account?
Like will that bring the data back.. or just the apps themselves without the data?
Because I want things to be as close as to where I left off as possible.
I don't want to have to re-login to everything, or re-setup the preferences / settings for each app.
Moving my pictures and music and all that isn't a problem.
I just need help moving apps, but not sure if I can move the data as well since neither phone is rooted.
Thanks in advance for those that take the time to help, happy holidays!

any ideas please?

All I can tell you is moving from am Essential PH-1 to a Pixel 3XL, letting Google to the setup as designed worked pretty well. You still have to transfer files/photos yourself.
But unless both devices are rooted and you can use something like TiBu to restore user apps data (never system), you may not be able to avoid having to log back into accounts.

I logged back into all accounts but now the issue is I have a few browser tabs with firefox that I'd like to have sent to my new phone.. and I don't want to do it one by one. If I just sign into firefox account on new drvice would that copy them to both... because I would hate to factory reset my old phone and lose my open tabs.
Because since they were created/opened on my old phone I'm not sure how to send those tabs to the new phone?

Firefox has a bookmarks service. Create a folder for all of the current tabs then bookmark them. Then log into the service on both devices.

All I can say is.. thank. you. so. much! This took minimal effort and was exactly what I wanted! Out of all the shortcuts I know I was unaware you could select multiple tabs and do things with them lol

[Q] Could someone make a custom ROM that steals personal information from users?

Recently I received a notice from Google saying that my account was accessed from Russia. I also recently installed a custom Android ROM onto my T-Mobile HTC HD2. I was thinking, pretty much anyone can take the Android OS, make a custom version, and release it for download, right?
If so, is it possible that the person who created the custom Android ROM also modified it so they could steal my personal information? I really do like the ROM I am currently using and would not like to switch if I don't have to, but this whole Google thing has me paranoid now.
I have had my facebook lock down a few times from that kind of thing. But never out of the country. Did you check if mock locations is enabled? Settings - Applications -Development. Not sure id that could be the issue, but it is possible it was your phone reporting as another location.
Sent by Supersonic!
Now Google has sent me a second notice, AFTER changing my password, so this is really starting to bother me. I tried changing that Mock Locations setting, but it was already disabled. Just to be sure I haven't entered any of my new passwords into my phone yet since this last incident and I'm going to see if I still have problems.

That's not good. Stay away from those warez & p0rn sites that end in ".ru"

Watch out.
Are you sure google is sending these messages?
And does the mail contain a link for you to click on sayiong to change your password?
Alot of times the mail themselves are the scams. And are in most cases sent using the google account but from another server.
Could you copy paste the headers...leaving out your personal mail. In Outlook you can view this by opening the mail File->Info -> properties.
You should see internetheaders there.
Copy paste them. Dunno how to find them in Gmail havn't checked yet gonna see later how to view them in Gmail
Anything is possible, someone making a ROM could put whatever they wanted in there.
It's probably not the most likely way your account would end up compromised though, it could be anything from random hacking to malware on your PC.
Well, that's a good question. It's something that I wonder myself and that sometimes concerns me.
I have ESET antivirus installed and regularly do quick scans on my PC, but I suppose that wouldn't catch everything.
As far as the Google notice, it is not an email message. The notice appears in a red box with bold text at the top of my inbox when I sign into gmail, and I also checked the URL to make sure I was actually on Google.com.
I remember when I looking for ROMS to download, this particular build (can't remember the name) had the most thread views out of all of them at the time, so hopefully someone else would have noticed this issue by now if it was part of the build...
Anyways, thanks for your help. I'll try running an in-depth ESET scan to see if anything comes up.
I took it a step further and don't use any google account on my custom ROM at all. the less I rely on apps and cache data the better.
I always thought about that. Just me being cynical I suppose. Some of these deevs just do it for the love
I never thought of that before, maybe I should be more careful in the future..
Thank you gr8 idea...

What are you doing where you'd really need to worry about that? Just seems like using an android phone without a google account would be a pain.

Got my sensation.. where to begin?

I finally got my phone today. I am new to android, and actually i am new to smartphones.. this is my first smartphone and i decided that if i get myself one im going big and im getting the sensation
my question is.. where to begin with? like i just have the phone in my hand.. what is the first thing i should do or configure on the phone? i know its maybe a big question, but any help on how to setup the phone in the best way would be appreciated, as like i said, it is my first smartphone
thanks
Just go through the initial setup and then just use it. Change the home screens to your liking, download some apps and enjoy the handset. There's not a lot else to do as yet

Put it through it's paces I reckon to see everything is working out of the box. Sign up to gmail so you can use the market.
Use the GPS, internet, Youtube etc etc. Make sure everything works as they should.
Setting up the screen is already done for you just go to settings>Personalize and pick "Scene" or "Skin" to begin with.
Watch a quick Youtube video http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=How+to+operate+HTC+Sensation&aq=f
But you can customize it to your liking. Watching some videos will makes things quicker to pick up if you're new to Android phones.
Import your numbers to your sd card and then back to your google account, that way you won't lose your numbers if you lose your phone and when the time comes to upgrade to a new phone, you only have to sign in and you can have all your numbers back automatically, oh and your apps will come back too.
Sign into any emails you have and make sure that any new numbers you get you save to google and they will be kept too.
Try whats app and communicate for free across multiple platforms (supports BB, Iphone, symbian and Android) it's kinda like BBM, sign into facebook, twitter everything you have an account for and then sit back and let the phone do the rest, for me this is were HTC Sense stands alone, no other phone integrates social networking better.
Test your GPS out with the Navigation, join latitude and most importantly, make it your own.
Congrats on your new phone.
From all apps menu open "show me"
Very helpful info

Sure, if your numbers are on your sim then go to your people (phone book) press menu and click import / export, then import from sim, then select google.
If they're on your actual phone because you've input them one at a time, then click on import / export again and select export to sd card, then straight after it, press menu and click on import / export again, then click import from sd, when it asks where to? you say to google.
After you've done that simply click on menu from the phone book, go to view and just select google, as you have already moved them over.
PS: It may take a moment to sync all the contacts over so if it's dragging it's heels, make sure you have a good connection at the time ie: 3G upwards, preferably WIFI, and press menu, settings, accounts and sync and sync google.
That should sort that out for you
Not sure if you know this but when you save your numbers to google, it also means that you can't lose your numbers and if you change your phone, all you will have to do is sign into your google account and the numbers will come flooding back on their own, this will work for apps too, providing you've told your phone to do so.
Once you've done this with your phone, it won't make any difference what sd card you have in your phone.
As for juice defender, no not really, just go to accounts and sync, tell the phone not to sync stocks and news and weather all the time oh and facebook, just do them manually, i tend to leave google alone and allow it to sync, last thing you need is you turn off google, forget to sync in a month and you lose all the contacts which you aquired in that time!
Juice defender and the like are nifty apps but not really needed unless you have probs with your battery, your not going to get much more than a day from any Smart phone these days besides a nokia 6200000 or whatever they're called, just try to preserve what you can, turn off wireless communications unless you need them, like GPS, WIFI, mobile data and bluetooth.
Like i said b4 alter your account settings for different services, alter the brightness of your phone and when you get the chance to root properly, get autostarts and set up some rules for your phone so your not starting up programs that you don't need, autostarts is like a task killer, but instead of killing open apps and actively running in the background all the time, it actually sets the rules for them so they can be told not to open before they do, sounds hard but it's really easy
Task killers aren't recommended, they kill processes which shouldn't be killed, 99 - 100 people on XDA will tell you that, the other 1 is probably the bloke who moans about having a crap battery all the time
dladz, thank you very very much for the elaborated answer. it is greatly appreciated.
about the battery.. i noticed that i cant see battery percentage like other here are showing.. i see stats but i dont see in percentages how much is left, only in a green line that when it goes down it gets orange and then red.
would i need to install juice defender if i wanna see accurate percentages?
if you have in mind any more useful and necessary apps that i should download and install, it would be great.
When you get it all set up,go and read about the problems others are having and see if you can live with them, example my bluetooth has a bad background noice rendering it almost useless,I thought it was the headset I was using but turned out it's the phone so if a s/w update doesn't fix it then I will have to send it back to HTC,just got it back from a loose charging port fix.So basically if you need to exchange it don't wait like me and have to send it in for warranty repair.

Get the Battery Widget by Elvison.
It will do what you are looking for
Don't obsess over the battery
Congrats on your purchase, I hope you enjoy android and your phone as much as I do. Everyone here has experiences fast battery drain when they get their new phone. The reason is because they're using their new phone a whole lot simply because it's a new phone. It's not rocket science. Just be sure to charge it whenever you can and you'll be fine.
Be sure to check out the free apps in the android market. The thing I love most about android is the voice command ability, and how it's so tightly knit into all of googles services. "text - Mary", "Call - Teresa", "Navigate to In N Out". You can also use voice to text to dictate an email while on the road. Have fun.

Your more than welcome m8, hope it helped.
As for the battery, i would put up with it until we are able to permanently root our devices, get a custom recovery on there and the rom's will come flooding in, then there will be a percentage over the battery on your home screen (up the top)
There are apps which will give you a read out, too many to mention but they run in the background and I could do without that and for that reason i wouldn't recommend them because i wouldn't get them, if you don't mind the app running then there are loads on the market.

I'm from Liverpool born n bred and believe me, the people who made the voice recognition did not have scousers in mind when it was made.
I've had some pretty strange things come out of what i've said to my phone, needless to say some other people with strong accents will have the same problem it's funny tho.

Is there an option to to choose where to install the app? (i dont think i have seen an option to choose)

Not so much an option, rather the ability to move it afterwards.
So if an app is installed on my SD card and then im switching cards, then i will have to install this app again right?
Your phone will still know that the app is installed but the files will have shifted so it won't open it or it will force close.
best thing to do is to get a decent SD card and just take care of it, personally when I really install a rom, I clear all the data on it by formatting the card, that way you get a fresh slate.
I back up co pilot and some games my pics, tunes and videos. The reat can be re iinstalled.
Got it... well, i ordered a 16GB card so until the card arrives i will wait with installations

[Q] Factory reset by accident

OK, here I am with a cliche.
I have factory reset my HTC Titan, just for the fun of it, (to find out how awesome the process of a factory reset will be, but it was completed in just 1 sec) and backing up data completely ran out of my mind.
To top it all, my dreamspark unlock is gone. And now the official phone registration to unlock my phone is not working.
I know, I am a fool. But is there any way to get things back? I mean the apps that I have installed?
I usually do regular syncing with the Zune player, and thus got all my pics and videos on the phone. Also got all the music on my PC, so that's no biggie.
I just want all the apps back, because honestly, I don't remember the names of half of the apps. Is there any way that all the apps that I have purchased and downloaded (the free ones) from my windows account, gets automatically downloaded or synced to my phone?
Anything that you guys think might help my situation. Anything is welcome, even constructive criticism.
Thanks.

Go to http://www.windowsphone.com and login. On the top right you'll see your name with a little arrow next to it. Click it and choose "account". Right below your personal data you'll find a history of all apps and games you downloaded and installed. You can use this as a list and reinstall directly on your device or you can click the apps and send them to your device (or send an e-mail with the link to the according app). You can find the exact same history in Zune as well: click your name -> click "account" -> click "purchase history". Not sure about the exact names, since I use the german version.
Can't help you with your dreamspark unlock issue though, sorry. :/

[Q] New Nexus phone, questions about migrating everything over.

So, I busted the digitizer on my old S3 so I decided to get a nice shiny Nexus 5, along with the daunting task of transferring all of my data from my old phone to the new phone.
So, the biggest question I have right now is how the hell do I get all of my SMS/MMS messages over? I mean, the S3 uses the old messaging app, but the Nexus uses hangouts for its messaging goodness. Is it actually possible to somehow transfer all my old messages to hangouts? If not, would it be possible to put the old messaging app on there and move everything over as an archive? Finally if neither of those are viable options is there a win32/64 program that can just read the messaging database?
Anyway, since I'm here, any recommendations for a better launcher? It seems as though the launcher that comes with it is a bit too well, barebones for my taste, not to mention completely unconfigurable (from what I've gathered). Also, any ROMs worth their salt? I mean other than the launcher, I'm pretty impressed with the stock ROM. It's ridiculously snappy/responsive, but I'm totally open to suggestions.
Just use Google. It'll back up your apps and accounts
If the old phone is still somewhat usable..

SMS Backup + works very well for backing up and restoring SMS.
Or you can install Handcent on the old phone, back the messages up and restore them on the new phone.
Everything else Google should handle (contacts, apps email etc)
You can also use titanium backup to backup and restore SMS and MMS. Works perfectly.

If the game doesn't offer an export/import then your only shot is to poke around and look for the data file.
I use dropsync to back up any settings files to dropbox automatically whenever they are updated. Then if I swap devices I can resync them with the new phone. Handy for apps that don't natively support export/import.

Question Most frustrating virus ever

I have a virus attached to my phone / google cloud and I can not shake it. I've tried multiple anti virus apps, all of them found absolutely nothing on my phone. I have factory reset my phone 3 separate times, the last one,I did not import my contacts list( that's where the virus first attacked) . And somehow, my contacts appeared a few hours later. All with the same problem ( see supplied screenshot) please someone ,help. It has been going on for 6 months now and I have not found one other person to have a similar issue!? How can I be the only one affected smh
It's been a long while since I had a Galaxy (S5), but I help my sister and my mom with their S20 and S22...
Apologies if I am a bit obvious & obtuse -- but you haven't mentioned what I'm about to suggest -- but I remember getting that when my phone book was set to display email addresses and not only contacts with phone numbers. As with the Middle Eastern contacts, I imagine that THAT might've been a "virus" or something, which synced to your Google or Samsung account, and it simply keeps getting re-synced every time you reset your device and/or just re-synced in general after a time.
You may/might need to delete the entries manually from your Google account and/or your Samsung account contact lists -- and then finally your device.
If anything, a "virus" does not survive a factory reset...you either have to re-install or re-download the virus in some fashion (whether knowingly or not) after the reset...
Good luck with everything!

Not true. Rootkits do just that. Remember the infamous XHelper?
Does a Factory Reset Remove Viruses From Your Phone?
Running a factory reset on your phone can potentially clear out a persistent virus that is otherwise hard to remove. But does it remove all viruses?

I did not know about this. Can something like XHelper implant itself without root access? I have my doubts OP had root access in any state in the number of factory resets performed...
And -- although I have not looked into the URL or XHelper -- it doesn't look like that or other rootkit "viruses" purpose would be what happened to OP -- merely changing and/or inputting random contacts...

Yes, that’s what happened. It used some exploit in Android to hide itself in the system partition.

This is not the case with OP. He simply has to clean up his contacts.
I did manually erase all contacts after the last time, within 5 hours they were back. 435 contacts erased and brought back. It's mind numbing.
What is this xhelper?

Have you given any 3rd party app access to your contacts? They are coming back because they are being resynced from cloud. You have to delete them from your Google account (assuming that’s what you use) as well as any other account that you have added.
1. On your mobile, sign out of your Google account that is having these contacts. And delete all contacts on your device.
2. Delete all these contacts on the web (using a browser on your laptop). Do this on all your cloud accounts that have your contacts.
3. Once it is cleaned in the cloud, add your Google account back on your device.
You don’t have any virus.
It's as @TheMystic says, we'd be willing to bet that something is resyncing your contacts from a cloud; at the very least it is not a virus.
Unless the virus' only purpose is chaos, there's no reason a virus would do this action -- it's just not how modern viruses work nor their purpose. They open exploits to either damage your system (OS-wise), hold you ransom, or obtain your information. Maybe back in the 70's and 80's and early 90's, there were viruses whose only purpose was to wreak havoc and delete as much data as possible, now viruses are meant to somehow get monetary returns -- creating random contacts would in no way get any "hackers" any money.
I did as instructed. We will see lol. Thank you very much for your time. I am wondering something though. If this is not a virus, what do I call it? It's something, I have to have a name for it. And I really want to find out who caused it

Dont think so its a virus.
first - stop syncing of contacts from google drive. Delete all contacts from google, if you can.
use this app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.makelifesimple.duplicatedetector

Had the same issue years ago, turned out to be sync issue with google.
So far so good it's been two hours. And everything still looks good. One thing the mystic suggested had me check my settings , I had ,for some reason, allowed 3rd party access to my contacts. Why would anyone ever want random web sites to have access to their contacts? Why is that even a setting? Lmao But no matter, it's turned off now. And I also followed the mystics other suggestions. For once ,I feel confident that this solved my issue. But only time will tell. It was taking weeks for my contacts to erase themselves before. But it all makes a little more sense to me now. I will keep you guys updated. ,thanks again for all your help ,this forum thread did what months of me searching online, and going from one tech "guru" store to the next. Every single one of them said( in some form) " the only way to get rid of this issue is to start a whole new google account, and to not access my old account, from my new one" . I refused to believe that. They were all just being lazy because it wasn't 15 years of THEIR life that was getting erased . So thank you for helping me find a real solution
