From OOS 10.0.1 trying to install LOS 16.0 as a beginner and failing completely - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

I'm trying to install LOS 16.0 but it just won't work. I've tried using the TWRP 3.3.1-16 Q Unofficial by mauronofrio and it works that I can get into TWRP and can flash the rom and GApps, but then after that process once I try to boot into the OS it is just forever stuck in either fastboot or stuck on the bootloader unlocked warning screen. I did realize that I had to use fastboot flash boot twrp*.img because they disabled fastboot boot twrp*.img in the Android 10 update, but then am I supposed to reflash something on that boot partition now? The whole process is very confusing and the instructions from the LineageOS seem to not work at all. Is there anything I can do right now or is it just not possible to install this until TWRP, or OOS, or something I'm not knowledgeable enough to know about updates?

It's because you are using OOS 10.1 as a base (android 10) and you are trying to install Lineage OS 16 (android 9), so it's quite obvious why it isn't working. Try lineage OS 17 instead.

Lineage OS 17 won't work either. The developer intentionally used OOS 9 as base since fastboot boot command doesn't work yet on OOS 10. OP needs to downgrade to OOS 9 first, whichever of the two Lineage OS versions they wish to use.

I tried this. I downgraded to 9.0.9 and still the fastboot boot command is not working. Apparently this has something to do with the bootloader image itself not being downgraded?

I give up now, my temp phone I was using for holding backups for chat data just randomly wiped itself on havocOS and I've just lost years of chats and stuff and it's got me really down right now. They did fix the fastboot boot issue with today's 10.3.0 update but still nothing is working from any tutorial to get this thing to work on lineage, it just won't boot to it and twrp keeps having errors during flashing. This used to be so much easier on my older phones and I've installed this OS on about 5 phones now but OnePlus 6 just doesn't seem to work no matter what. I'm just going to go back to OOS and hope LineageOS 17.0 will get these issues ironed out by the time it releases. Severely disappointing and a waste of 3 days now but oh well

In my opinion, this is the easiest way to downgrade everything to OOS 9, including bootloader https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/op6-collection-unbrick-tools-t3914109
After that, just unlock the bootloader again like usual and follow the LOS16/17 page's install instructions and you should be good to go.

I tried to install Havoc 3.5 while i was on 10 Ob2, unlocked bootloader and installed patched twrp, then rom. Got stuck in fastboot mode. **** hell i messed everything, later i found fastboot recovery rom from xda, flashed it, thank god it saved me. For me, msm tool was not getting connected, got an error like sahara xyz something... Then after refering to multiple xda threads came to know that most of the present 10 custom roms are based on oos android 9. Then again i used downgrade package from community, reverted back to ob 25 oos (pie), then as usual installation process. So if you are interested in custom roms, downgrade to pie. And again i wanted to go back to complete stock from havoc but unfortunately msm was not responding and fastboot roms wont support upgradation (im not sure), i went to twrp and installed stable 9.0.9 to both partitions + twrp installer. Then 10 oos stable to both partitions + twrp. Then booted up and installed Ob2 again from system updater, lost twrp on that process, then locked bootloader, so mow completely stock ? lot of work for nothing ? oos is better for me.. infact i got used to that. maybe i should purchase another phone to continue the momentum of getting latest updates. crazy oos influence ?

OK, so I am not sure what exists in the OnePlus forums but lets start with:
1. You are aware there are two sets of partitions on this device correct? If not, please read here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/guide-noobs-guide-to-b-partitions-op6-t3816123
2. What are you running now?
3. You need to update your TWRP to blu_spark but I am not sure if the latest (v9.91) works with Oreo... I know that v9.86 works with Oreo for sure. Read and download from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/development/kernel-t3800965
4. Get the appropriate OOS zip file from this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/oneplus-6-mirrors-official-oxygen-os-t3792244
Specifically OOS 5.1.11: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=1322778262903980680
The basic steps should be like this (all assumes you have and unlocked bootloader):
1. If you are running OOS 5.1.11, reboot to fastboot
2. Boot blu_spark TWRP.img - fastboot boot twrp.xxx.img
3. Flash OOS 5.1.11
4. Flash blu_spark TWRP.zip to get it on both slots
5. Reboot to RECOVERY
6. Flash OOS 5.1.11
7. Flash blu_spark TWRP.zip
8. Factory reset in TWRP
9. Flash Havoc Oreo zip
10. Flash blu_spark TWRP.zip
11. Reboot to RECOVERY
12. Flash GApps
13. Flash Magisk (optional if you want root)
14. Flash no-verity if you plan to run unencrypted. (optional)
My advice is to READ READ READ before going forward with anything. The A/B partition layout is far from the traditional days of a single partition layout with a recovery partition. Educate yourself or risk bricking your device and opening up a whole different set of problems.
i do this by step by step but now iam bricked. after all it want restart but it glows only the blue led

It does sound like you READ READ READ before proceeding... My steps were not intended as a step-by-step guide, which is why I said the steps "should look like this". You didn't answer any of my questions, so I have no idea where you started from or where things went wrong to get you into this state...
Can you get into fastboot mode?
If so, try this thread first: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/rom-stock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-6-t3796665
The fastboot restore method will ONLY work if you know which OOS you were running before you got bricked...
If you can't restore from fastboot images, try this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/tool-msmdownloadtool-v4-0-international-t3798892
I cannot stress enough, you MUST read all the steps and understand what you are doing before doing anything. If you have any questions, ASK before proceeding... Good luck.

You are back up and running, good work! Congrats!
When you say the device is 'locked', you mean the bootloader is locked again? It shows 'Locked' in fastboot? Obviously you need to unlock the bootloader again before proceeding if this is the case...
And 'Yes', it is normal for 'bootloader version' and 'baseband' to be blank. It shows the same on my device anyway, and I can flash custom ROMs with no issues, and everything works.
At this point, you should be able to follow the steps in my post, making sure you first unlock the bootloader (which will wipe all of your data). You might want to format data (not just wipe as well) to start fresh. I would also confirm that there are no issues running Havoc Oreo with encryption (I'd recommend asking the question in the Havoc OnePlus telegram channel, https://t.me/havoconeplus). After people ask to "Why are you running Oreo?!?!", you just might get an answer... I dumped being encrypted after about a week of having this device because it made moving between ROMs more difficult.
In step 14, I mention the no-verity file to remove force encryption. I have attached it to this post. Again, you may want to have /data encrypted (necessity, personal preference etc.) so this isn't mandatory but I found it made flashing different ROM's much easier (personal preference really).

Looks like they removed Oreo builds, you might be out of luck. Check out XenonHD 8.1 thread if your set on running Oreo, was updated to Dec. Security patch.

Did you flash OOS 5.1.11 on both slots? I know you said you were on OOS 5.1.5 when you did the MSM tool restore.
Unsure if the Havoc build you are running requires a certain FW. Usually the devs update the blobs on customer ROMs based on the latest releases of OOS. In this case, 5.1.11 was the last version of OOS Oreo.

I'd recommend just going to Pie. I haven't run Havoc in over a month but the latest AEX is solid and battery life is excellent. The Pie ROMs have stabilized significantly in the last month.

unable to install twrp over 3.1.1.1 on mi4c (trying to go from android 7.1 to 8 or 9)

Hey everyone,
i usually don't post questions but i've been on pretty much every forum the web has to offer and am still stuck so i'll try my luck here.
i'm currently running lineage 7.1 on my mi4c, i've used another phone for a while but now that my mi4c has a new battery i wanted to start using it again, is also decided this would be the time to update it to android oreo or pie, this however seems to be impossible.
i can only use twrp up to 3.1.1.1, all higher (and unofficial versions) will not boot via fastboot 'dtb not found' or when flashed via older twrp will freeze on boot screen.
whenever i try to install a new rom it tells me 'error code 7', when i remove the 'assert' lines in the update it gives me 'error code 6'
my device is unlocked, i have checked this in fastboot.
do i have to install miui again before installing another rom? do i have to go back to the standard recovery? i'm currently running out of ideas and hope you guys might be able to help me. maybe i'm overlooking something simple.
kind regards,
Monstreys
Hi! I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but I was about to start a similar thread.
I try to do exactly what you are doing. I want to install LineageOS 16, unofficial ROM.
For this you need a newer TWRP, like 3.2.3.0, but it doesn't work 'dtb not found' like you said. I found out that this doesn't work because you need to have nougat bootloader. Most probably you have lollipop bootloader like I have, and thats why newer versions of TWRP are not working. I think the only way to update your bootloader to a nougat one is to flash the latest MIUI ROM. But, unfortunately, when you do that the bootloader gets locked, and I can't unlock it via MiUnlock due to Error:20091 when I try to link the phone to the Mi account. In MiUnlock it gives me the "this account cannot unlock the phone" or something like that.
Now I removed the "assert" lines from my rom and flashed it without the error 7 or 6. Some error still apears, but it also apears when I flash LineageOS 14.1, and that version is working even with those 2 errors I can't remember during flash.
After I flashed LineageOS, I flashed gapps and then superSU, and now my mi4c is stuck on mi logo for about 20 minutes, and I think it will remain that way.
So, there are 2 things we need to solve. We need to find a way to install latest MIUI without relocking the bootloader because I can't unlock it via MiUnlock, or to find out why after I flashed LineageOS 16 it gets stuck on MI logo.
I think I found the solution. Do exactly what this guy is doing here and it might work.

I followed that guy instructions and I managed to install TWRP 3.2.3.0 and LineageOS 16, and it booted. Now I am at the setup part but it has very big lag...

My MI4C has been successfully flushed into lineage-17.1-20200220-UNOFFICIAL-libra.zip. It has been updated on TWRP 3.1.1 and keeps reporting error 7, and then abandoned TWRP3.1.1 and flashed into OrangeFox-R10.0-1-Stable-libra.zip After brushing libra-aqua_firmware_7.2.9.zip on this REC, you can flash lineage-17.1. I do n’t think it will be impossible to refresh because of partition problems. If you only need to upgrade lineage-17.1, you can refer to this method.:good::good:(Translation is not easy to use)

Been gone for a while, help confirming a few things to upgrade to Android 10

Hi, hoping a kind soul out there will help to confirm a few things about moving to Android 10 from Android 9
I haven't bothered keeping my phone up to date for around a year, and I'm just looking into updating to stock OOS 10 for now.
I'm currently rooted with TWRP & Magisk running an old Android 9 custom ROM, and there seems to be a bit of confusion around TWRP and updating to android 10. I'm looking to completely format the phone, not worried about loss of data as I'll just restore titanium backups, so my plan is this to get a clean install with TWRP + Magisk+Gapps:
1) Reboot to current bluspark TWRP, Flash OOS 10.3.0, Flash twrp-3.3.1-16 mauronofrio installer.zip, Reboot to recovery
2) Flash OOS 10.3.0, Flash twrp-3.3.1-16 mauronofrio installer, flash Magisk 20.3, flash GApps arm64 10.0 nano, reboot to system & enjoy.
This was always my normal update process so i'm pretty comfortable with this way if it will work.
Can anyone confirm if this will cause issues due to TWRP not working properly with android 10 when i preform my first reboot to recovery? My thinking is that if I flash it after installing android 10 then any issues caused by android 10 should be fixed, is this correct?
Thanks!
There is no confusion at all.
Everything is clear since months ago that 10.3 was released.
Upgrade firstly to the latest 9.x Rom, then flash the latest TWRP and then u are ready for flashing 10.3 and latest magisk.

Really confused on steps to root / custom rom.. Help me please

I have the GM1910 version of the OnePlus 7 Pro
Ok so I had a stock OOS 10.3 on the 7 Pro I just bought used, went home and was super excited to get a custom rom installed. From my previous experience back in the day, I knew to USB Debug, OEM unlock, Advanced Reboot for convenience and followed the Havoc Custom ROm guide that said to:
1. Download the ROM, TWRP Installer, GApps, Magisk.
2. Wipe Data, Dalvik.
3. Flash the ROM, TWRP Installer (Use Unofficial Q compatible version, starting at 3.3.1.575).
4. Reboot to Recovery.
5. Flash the ROM, TWRP Installer again.
6. Reboot to Recovery.
7. Flash GApps (Optional), Magisk (Optiona).
8. Reboot and Enjoy.
Never Wipe System or Vendor partition.
After doing so, I first ran into an issue with Fastboot Mode being indefinitely stuck, but fixed that with a TWRP 3.3.1-75 version I downloaded, and was able to boot TWRP. After that, and following the guide above, I noticed it was stuck on the Havoc boot animation. I waited a good 20 minutes before realizing its likely never going to boot. I rebooted twice after that, waiting 10 more minutes each for a total of about an hour, thinking "Hey maybe it takes time". Nothing. I then tried flashing NikGapps for Android Q compatibility as latest Gapps on the OpenGapps website allows up to Android 9. I realized afterward that it was a n00b mistake so I downloaded and flashed the Beta Android 10 Beta Pico OpenGapps and Magisk Canary that also failed.
After that, I started searching around for finding a way to return to stock Android 9 to start over, thinking Android 9 had more stable support, so I downloaded and fastboot flashed the Android 9.5..11 GM21AA - Direct Download, but while showing the OnePlus stock boot animation, it freezes and then the device turns off entirely.
I'm currently waiting for the 9.5.13 Repack (taken from the Collection of Unbrick Tools thread) to finish downloading to see if I can use MSM tool to restore stock Android 9 and kind of start over. I would prefer to root / custom rom Android 9. I have no clue what I'm doing now, but honestly recall it being so easy back in the day before this A/B partition stuff and I would have considered myself to be not so much a n00b, but at least quite "experienced" but I guess thats completely irrelevant now hey!. Can someone please guide me on how I can fix this and get a custom rom booting? Thank you very much!
Update: I managed to restore to Android 10 using the Decrypted Oxygen OS 10.3 ZIP from the "Collections of brick tools" linked above, then rooted that stock OOS using the standard guide. I got Havoc Android 9 working prior but ran into tons of bugs so I just decided to stick to stock for now.

Unless there is something specific you need with a custom ROM, I'd stay stock and root.
I have EdXposed installed and can tweak most things.
I really need ad blocking and some basic customization.
I don't need a full ROM to get what I want.

I would have agreed with you yesterday, but I've used the phone for a few days and cannot stand the insanely rounded corners so I tried finding a work around. So far reducing screen height and getting rid of Oxygen OS's software rounded corners is the way to go but stock OOS doesnt give you the option, I'm hoping a custom rom will. Currently in the midst of flashing RR Android 9
Which boot slot are you trying to flash the rom on and have you tried flashing other roms? I know I've tried flashing havoc a few times and no go. I'm using blissrom right now and it works great until I get the rom I'm building and configuring and have data and messaging working lol

My story and a couple of questions

Hi All,
I have a new-to-me Oneplus 7 Pro. I have been trying to get Lineage with MicroG running. Well it has been quite the adventure and I have it to the point where I have Lineage running fine, and go to reflash TWRP and have bricked the phone, which takes a bit of time to get back to the point of having Linage running again. Specifics:
Lineage version: lineage-19.1-20221219-microG-guacamole.zip
TWRP Versions: I have found that twrp-3.6.1_11-0-guacamole.img works since my phone is at Android 11.
My questions are:
Are TWRP versions tied to Android versions?
When I am trying to get the last version of TWRP installed I have tried 2 approaches:
fastboot flash recovery
fastboot flash boot
Neither worked, phone always ends up bricked. I have used:
TWRP-3.5.1-guacamole-Nebrassy-3.img
twrp-3.6.1_11-0-guacamole.img
twrp-3.6.2_11-0-guacamole.img
I also have tried to boot the images 1st using: fastboot boot twrp-3.6.1_11-0-guacamole.img
and that bricks things.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

If you look at the official installation page for your phone, you will see that Lineage OS 20 and 19.1 are supported. So you should reinstall Lineage OS 18.1 again, and then follow the steps on this page. Don't bother reinstalling GAPPS until after you upgrade it.
If for whatever reason you don't want an Android version higher than 11, let me know.
I specifically don't want GAPPS or anything remotely Google related. I had tried OS 20 and found that I had a problem installing apps - probably user error, but I don't need the latest and greatest. I am currently at Android 11.
I will read through the instructions, although the number of tutorials I have gone through is craze.
Can you tell me what the relationship between TWRP and Android version is, and are you able to sus out what I did wrong with my efforts to get TWRP loaded over the lineage 19 version I was using?
Thanks

I specifically don't want GAPPS or anything remotely Google related. I had tried OS 20 and found that I had a problem installing apps - probably user error, but I don't need the latest and greatest. I am currently at Android 11.
I will read through the instructions, although the number of tutorials I have gone through is craze.
Can you tell me what the relationship between TWRP and Android version is, and are you able to sus out what I did wrong with my efforts to get TWRP loaded over the lineage 19 version I was using?
Thanks
Ray

So I guess you don't want GAPPS, just MicroG. Definitely read through the instructions I gave you, as they are the official installation and upgrade instructions.
I would recommend installing Lineage OS 20, because it is the version that is being maintained right now.
I will attempt to guide you through the steps, but I need to know what your situation is right now: Is your bootloader unlocked? What OS do you have installed right now? What recovery are you using? etc.
I appreciate your help. Currently I am looking at a freshly updated phone with Android 11, and Oxygen 11.0.9.1.GM21AA.
The phone is a GM1917
Bootloader is unlocked and I am in developer mode. I have adb and fastboot loaded on my computer. I also have a working version of msm as I have bricked this thing 6 or 7 times...
Several times now, I have done the following:
Install TWRP
Install Lineage
Try and reflash TWRP <-- consistently fails at this point, gets stuck in a boot loop in the bootloader screen
Thanks

"Try and reflash TWRP" what do you mean, update the OS over TWRP?
I mean trying to re-install TWRP after installing Lineage

OK. Can you try following the installation instructions and skip the unlock bootloader step? Do so at your own risk, because the steps say you have to be on Android 12 first. If you do follow them, just make sure you follow them very carefully.

To my knowledge the guides that are provided on the TWRP site don't work for Android 12 and 13. From what I've heard, you have to root your phone and then install TWRP through Magisk.

The guides I linked to point to the official Lineage OS instructions, right?

Yeah, but I was just saying how they should probably reflash TWRP instead of how TWRP's site says to, which doesn't work

This build uses Lineage OS Recovery instead of TWRP.

I know, but TWRP can be installed with Android 13 custom roms according to the TWRP thread.
