iOS "Power/Jailbreak" user here. Just got rid of our iPad 1 (too slow). Tablet-less now. Decided to jump iOS ship on my phone to day (HTC One X Plus). Based on reading I think Jelly Bean represent maturation of Android to point of iOS Jailbreak users like me being ready to jump ship (although I'll still recommend iOS to simple users - parents/wife, etc.)
Kids want iPad 3 (Apple was selling for $379 refurb 16GB - we don't use it for movies so storage not an concern). Read reviews on Nexus 10 and TF700. TF700 seems to be overall the better product, especially considering price brand new is now $428 on Amazon compared to $499 for Nexus 10 (32GB models) and TF-700 can be converted to essentially an ultrabook eliminating the need for a second laptop for my kids. Lots of people obsessed with specs these days, especially pixel count (reminds me of digicam megapixel wars.) so Nexus 10 is the "new hot thing" (My tablet has more pixels than your iPad, Na Na Na Na Na Na) But I'm leaning towards TF-700. Sorry for being so wordy - let me get to the point:
Any iPad 2/3 users here that can comment on they comparative experiences with the TF700? I realize the tablet-centric app selection is thinner in the Android world, so far. Phone apps scaling to Nexus 7 wasn't too bad I hear but little concerned about going from iPad to TF700 or Nexus 10 as far as tablet apps go. I checked the apps we had on iPad and 80% of them were there but there's no indication on Google play if the version was designed for a tablet or not.
BIG thing drawing mean to Jelly Bean is user profiles. Despite what Apple thinks or hopes, our household can't afford an iPad for every member in the house! I hear Jelly Bean 4.2 is support user profiles! Hurray. But I assume not for the TF700 since that came out several months ago.
I see on Engadget today that Jelly Bean 4.2 Binaries releases on ASOP. So realistically, how much longer before I can run Jelly Bean 4.2 with user profiles on a TF-700? Or is it a moot point because people think we'd be better off with an iPad 3 or Nexus 10 given our usage (kids use it 80% of the time for games/web browsing/tablet apps - I use it 20% of the time for web browsing)
Even if Nexus is better choice, seems silly to pay out the nose on day one before anyone other than Google is offering it. Seems holiday competition once other retailers have it should bring price down a little. Benefit of TF700 being around though is I can go used on Ebay and if no like, get my money back.
For the love of me, buy a nexus 10. If you really want a tf700 I will sell you mine just pm me. This is only 3 weeks old but I cannot make it into a ultrabook replacement . I bought a MacBook and now need to sell the infinity. It's great but Tue only nice thing is the screen. I think the tegra 3 chip is just not enough to multitask. Profile switching is cool I have an app that does it between work and play apps

Actually, the current version of Android on the TF700 should support multiple users. You'd just have to do it from the command line and it might be buggy, I don't know for sure as I have not tried it yet. I don't know about the Nexus 10 or the iPad3, but I've been pretty happy with my TF700. While updates will certainly come faster to Google tablets, ASUS does give us updates as well.
Last I checked, you could expect an Apple mobile device life cycle of about 30 months for OS updates. Google has only recently made a requirement for vendors to release updates for 18 months and that doesn't guarantee much as vendors do not have a deadline to release updates; however, if you don't mind flashing ROMs on your tablet, the good folks at XDA make some great ROMs long after support for a device is dropped.
Edit: Apparently Apple removes features its latest versions of iOS when it releases them to older devices. Google/Android vendors do not do this.
Also, one minor note, you can't transform the TF700 into an ultrabook but rather a netbook. The dock to do that is from $130 - $150 last I checked.
The command for adding users to a TF700 ( you must be root):
# pm create-user <username>
To get a list of users and their ids ( you must be root):
# pm list-users
To remove the user ( you must be root):
# pm remove-user <1, 2, 3 ... n>
Do NOT remove user 0.

Hi.
I hope this post does not make people mad. I just need a current perspective. Most searches on this are older.
I am thinking about buying this tablet but I am unsure. I hope this does not draw haters. I am just trying to reason it out and be a better informed buyer.
My reasons
1. Tablet seems to be out of stock. A lot.
-Does this mean truly it is being discontinued? Is there a new version on the horizon?-Is it just so good they can't keep them on the shelves?2. Should I go with the Zen 8 with 4GB of ram or other comparible? I mean for few dollars more...
3. Is the Shield K1 only good because of the Game pad mapper support for touch only games?
4. Would the Ipega controller(or similar) with touch game pad mapping be just as good?
I want a good gaming tablet and a good media tablet.
Thanks.
There's no definitive answer on the Shield X1 yet. I wouldn't bother playing that waiting game if you need a tablet now. I don't know how Nvidia handles their Shield line of products as this is my first Nvidia portable, but if it's anything like they do with their GeForce video cards, then you'd be seeing an announcement about a successor a month in advance of its release.
Supply isn't keeping up with demand right now. I was on vacation when I decided to pull the trigger on the Shield K1 because my Nook HD+ felt sluggish. I bought the Shield K1 a week before they started going out of stock everywhere last month, and even though I didn't need it immediately since I wasn't on vacation anymore, my phone died this week so I've been using the new tablet while I wait for a warranty replacement phone to be delivered. Fortuitous timing.
The biggest problem I see with the ZenPad S 8.0 Z580CA is that there doesn't seem to be a way to unlock the bootloader currently, so even though you can root it, there isn't any active development for it, and it's still stuck on Lollipop. Also, everyone seems to say it has pretty bad battery life.
As for performance, the Shield K1 will smoke the ZenPad in pretty much everything graphics-related because of the Kepler GPU. The Shield is still the best Android gaming tablet, and while its raw CPU and memory performance isn't at the top due to the SoC's age, it's still more than good enough to not be an overall system bottleneck.
I've only had two issues with the K1 so far. One is that I can't get the camera to save to external SD. This is the writing-to-exFAT issue that's apparently related to Marshmallow permissions, but I've had my LG G4 on Marshmallow since February and never had any such external SD write issues, so I don't know if it's an Nvidia-specific thing. The other issue is the hypersensitive touchscreen, which can be recalibrated in the software. I also still need to install a tempered glass screen protector, which might change the touch sensitivity as well.
I can't answer your game controller questions as I haven't started playing any games on mine yet.
For me, the SHIELD tablet is currently the best one in the market. Only problem I have had is that since the Marshmallow update, the sound over HDMI is broken (doesn't work) though the image is working perfectly fine.
1. Tablet seems to be out of stock. A lot.
-Does this mean truly it is being discontinued? Is there a new version on the horizon?
Probably no , nvidia reps are saying it is just a production rate not meeting higher demand.
-Is it just so good they can't keep them on the shelves?
Yes the price reduction gave this shield an epic boost compared to other tablets at the moment.
2. Should I go with the Zen 8 with 4GB of ram or other comparible? I mean for few dollars more...
Thats a good tab but i've seen a few hick ups in performance during a review video on youtube. besides tegra k1 is far more superior that intel soc. (you also have to consider the fact that intel soc are x86/64 architecture so there are few comparability issues in apps and games)
3. Is the Shield K1 only good because of the Game pad mapper support for touch only games?
No it is good because you are getting high end performance tablet for 200$ , it plays every game you throw at it with ease, you have all the things you need as gamer in built (console mode , twitch , 1080 screen , direct wifi controller)
4. Would the Ipega controller(or similar) with touch game pad mapping be just as good?
i dont have it so i cannot answer that.
Upcoming shield k1 successor will likely not be in same price range as the k1. It is expected to be somewhere between 300 to 400$. Shield k1 was relaunched around nov 2015 , so i highly doubt that it is at its end of cycle. In one of geforce forums a nvidia representative said they are viewing shiled k1 as a relaunch tablet and its EOL support in no way near . so you are covered to get android N for this device.
Its the best bang for buck at the moment and still keeps up with soc from this year.
Thank you all. I went ahead and ordered a K1. With 2 day shipping put it out to the middle of next week. So i did 1 day. Lol. Should be Tuesday now. Stock is still low but at least they have them. I hope it comes sooner.

You made a right choice. For gaming there truly isn't anything else comparable out there. Media wise I'm not so sure, just on the basis of the subpar screen.

Just my luck. Never fails. Just like my shield TV. Now you can get it with 2 game pads.
Anyone need something new to come out sooner. Let me know. I can just buy the old one and after i click order the announcement of the new device will soon follow. oh well. I am still looking forward to the k1.

Haha lol , im sorry but i think you can return the shield if its unopened besides i think the new tablet will probably be 100$ more. Performance might increase only 10-20% , battery size might be little less as it is said to be lil thinner.
so i think you are not losing much comparing price to performance ratio.
Nah.
I am sure it will be a keeper for a while. Thx

Just bought one . Hard to get it, always out of stock, 192.44€
Hi guys,
I'm still my ol'good Asus TF-700. I have installed a long time ago the zombi-pop 5.1 rom.
The tablet is running quite fine but despite having everything on sdcard, some lags remain.
I saw that newer ROMs based on MM or Nougat do not support SDCard installation anymore.
So, will those ROMs give me better performance anyway ? Or Zombi-pop is still the best I can have.
I'm wondering if my lags are not due to F2FS not supportying TRIM...I may go back to ext4, don't know...
On another side, i'm considering changing my tablet. But I really apperciate the keyboard dock with battery and 10" screen.
I know Google Pixel C but it's very expensive.
Any other tablet you can suggest that will fit my needs ?
Regards.
It wasnt too hard to change up the ROM. I flashed the katkiss ROM yesterday.
I was thinking about changing over to a surface pro but not sure yet...
Chuwi makes several tabs that are dual OS Windows/Android RemixOS. A friend of mine bought one and likes it but I don't know how good they really are. But it is interesting....
http://en.chuwi.com/tablet.html
Im running KatKiss nougat and have been on a never ending quest for the best performance. I suggest running Nougat. Putting and keeping the CPU speed at 1.4mhz and using ZRAM on boot. That seems to make it quite snappy and good on battery life. My main use is to use Microsoft Word at work and watch Podcasts and Netflix. Generally that is enough for me. Word is a BEAST and seems to take a toll on memory etc. I suggest keeping the sync and autosave functions off and keep the files on the local drive and sync them later into the google drive.
I may be a little late to the thread but I recently replaced my TF700 with a Samsung Chromebook Plus and its just great.
Chromebooks now run Android apps (well some of them do) and this device has a 2400x1600 display, keyboard, touchpad, touch-screen, pressure sensitive stylus and a microSD slot.
Overall this thing is awesome, so much better performance than the TF700.
There are a few minor negatives. No way to get root access or install custom ROMs (but you can install linux), and Android apps don't yet have access to the SDcard (but should in a few versions).
Currently you can open files read-only from the Chrome files app and choose an Android app to run them in.
I don't really miss root access much and the frequent updates to Chromebooks (for at least 5 years) lessens my desire for custom ROMs.
I recommend taking a look at a few Chromebooks if you are still looking for a new device, they are a much cheaper option than many of the Android tablets that are around.
Hi. Sorry this is not the original intention of the thread.
I just picked up a TF700 for light use. Maybe take to class for note taking or just bring with me when I don't feel like toting my laptop. Anyways I just wanted to find out from you guys what you recommend software-wise for maximum usability. Will I see a significant increase in speed if I install a custom ROM? It currently just has the stock 4.2.1. A few years ago I used a TF300t and a fancy stylus for note taking, but Inot longer have either. I didn't have the keyboard for it, so this seems like it will be more useful.

.
The only active development of ROM for TF700 and likely better than anything out there is on this thread. As you're on android 4 you probably have some maintenance to do to get from there to the latest version V24 7.1.2 your bootloader is probably older for starters.

It is good, but likely expect to be stuck on fireOS without root or lineage. The fire 10HD (2019) has the same processor and it was limited root exploit that was blocked as soon as it came out. Exploits are harder to find, i guess i would hope that it can install play services, block updates, and change launcher. If amazon hasn't blocked the exploits in the newer fireOS. Maybe someone will pick one up after a while or amazon sales and look into exploits, but i wouldn't count on it. Seems development is dying...

According to the Amazon developer website - https://developer.amazon.com/docs/fire-tablets/ft-device-specifications-firehd-models.html the new HD 8 (2020) has as Mediatek MT8168 versus the Mediatek MT8183 with the HD 10 (2019).
I would be amazed if mtk-su is not blocked out of the box. It is also possible that they have crippled bootrom mode like they have on late examples of the HD 8 (2018).
Anyone who does get the new tablet, I would recommend not letting it update at least until it has been thoroughly checked out. I let my HD 10 (2019) update to OS 7.3.1.1 only to find out a couple of weeks later that the OS version it shipped with was vulnerable to an updated version of mtk-su.

Yeah i misread, 4 cores (hd8) vs 8 cores (hd10). I would prefer the 8 cores over the ram... You only need ram if you are multi-tasking or gaming (from my experience). But either way, looks like they are trying to kill their echo show line with a dock and wireless charging.... I would suspect the same android 9 version that the hd10 (2019) has, based off what amazon usually does....

Amazon launches a new Fire HD 8 and HD 8+ (10th generation, 2020) in this quarantine.
Reviews:
Pros (Excellent things)
-> MediaTek MT8168 (64-bit quad-core) faster processor.
-> USB-C charging (this is not a Thunderbolt).
-> Wireless charging (only on plus model).
-> MicroSD up to 1 TB.
-> 2 MP rear/front facing camera.
-> 1280x800 HD IPS display.
-> 2GB of RAM for standard model, 3GB for plus model.
Cons (Terrible things)
-> No Google services pre-installed.
-> Amazon OTA update is critical, vulnerable, and no security updates.
-> Basic root method has been limited and patched by Amazon.
-> Bootloader exploit and vulnerability are difficult.
-> Silk browser is useless and dangerous (not secure, scamming, malvertising, phishing, hijacking, and stealing personal information).
-> 32-bit OS. That can't install some 64-bit APKs.
-> No Wi-Fi display (Miracast).
-> Adware on the lock screen that can't see your notifications.
-> No low audio latency supported. That audio latency is horrible when using digital audio workstation like FL Studio Mobile.
-> Fire launcher is useless (no shortcut, no app widget, no personalization, and a lot of weird user interface).
-> No camera autofocus.
-> Single camera lens.
-> Camera is terrible (focusing is bad, low quality, viewing isn't wider, and a few noises).
-> No USB-C power delivery.
-> No ExFat file system supported.
Updated in:
Aug 24, 2020, 1:33 PM
the new MT8168 is produced in 12nm.
while the old MT8163 from HD8 (2018) is produced in 28nm.
This should bring better effecency
Will the SD card support ExFat this time? Or is Amazon still refusing to pay Microsoft for the license to use it?

How would anyone know? Amazon doesn't say and device won't be released until early June. Left my crystal ball at the office.
I've been waiting for this info for nearly a year. I bought the 2017 7 (first Fire tab) Sept. 2018. It's slow and REALLY slow with Google services. But, for $30+tx, it makes a great video bell for my ring doorbell. I bought the 2019 10 end of Nov. For $70+tx, it's a fantastic device. (FWIW, my favorite tablet was the Nexus 9--when it worked, which was about half of the time.) I'd been back and forth with the idea of getting the 2018 8. After it went on sale the end of April, along with 20% off for Discover/AmEx, I figured that no matter what, it was worth using my low value reward points just to buy the damn thing. Well, it arrived, and I ran it through Fire Tool Box (thx Datastream33) which included my Nova Prime launcher. It surely did seem slow. Factory reset and it was faster (no surprise there), but I couldn't live without Chrome and gmail so, back to Google. This time I didn't set up Nova. ATM, the speed is in-between stock and full google with Nova. The tablet is a good size for grab-and-go. But, it's no 2019 10. I can still return this one, but I'm gong to keep it. However, I will definitely be looking at the new 8's--and deals to buy one. My 10 works perfectly with google and nova so I'm hoping the same for 2020 8.

Highly unlikely, why would amazon do it? They sell these to promote amazon, the prices are low to do this. I don't see why they would have any incentive to change. They barely support newer android and only make changes that benefit them. The only reason they upgrade the newer Android is because the apps they promote are obsolete in newer android systems. My opinion...

My 10 is basically access to info on the web and my email accounts, but I also have Hangouts and Zoom on them, just in case.. The camera works pretty well on the 10 for Zoom, but Android only allows 4 panes on a page. I use my Pixel 3a for that. I use Chrome and like the sync feature. I used to use tablets for reading but found it too hard on my eyes so we all have Kindle paper whites. I've rooted almost every piece of android I've ever owned beginning with the Pandigital novel about a million (ok, maybe 10) years ago. However, I don't care about that for the fire tablets since I can access google quite easily (even easier since the Fire Tool Box was created). I jailbroke one or two Apple devices but still didn't care for them. These are toys for me although I don't play games on them. A lot of people use their phones for everything, but I don't want a very large phone so the screen size isn't great for me to read web pages. However, tablets travel easily. If I'm not driving, I will set up wifi hotspot on my phone so that I have access to a larger screen. It's much easier to take the 8" tablet with me than the 10" for a short trip.
Your tablets seem to be doing very little; however, that's great if that's what you want. Sorry you messed up with your mum. I'm a mom of two middle-aged guys, and I'm thrilled to get anything from them! I do get that some people just aren't into technology. You could sell the 7, or even give it to someone who might like it. If you're not doing anything with the 8", maybe it wouldn't matter if you bungled the hardware hack. It seems you wanted to try it out. That can be nerve-racking. "Cowards die a thousand deaths ...." That's what I always think about when I'm trying to shore up to tackle something new and daring--AND costs money!
I'm sure you'll get some great suggestions from others (without having to read a novella).

Would love to pick up the 8+ charging dock bundle, BUT only if it can be rooted and flashed with a vanilla Android ROM, which is why I'm poking around the forum today. Really just want to use it as a music streamer (files & apps) by attaching an AudioQuest Cobalt, then out to an Amp. The up to 1TB of data could come in handy.

Highly unlikely. Rooting, already a tough prospect on many Amazon devices, will be a lot tougher going forward with newer code bases. Writing has been on the wall for many months (years).
amazon just started shipping a few days ago. some hands-on reviews are here:
All-new Amazon Fire HD 10 review: Promises productivity, delivers content consumption
The refreshed Amazon Fire HD 10 has officially launched and we're seeing if the new productivity features deliver more than a content consumption machine.

Amazon's new $180 tablet is good, but most people should still get an iPad
Amazon's Fire HD 10 Plus has great battery life, a good screen and easy access to movies, music and books. But it lacks a lot of apps.

first review got some bad info: the CPU is not new (same as HD10 2019). Split screen is not new (available on HD10 2019) from Fire OS 7. 2nd review compared it against an ipad...
if anyone here got 1, plz post ur thoughts on it. thanx!
edit: OP of the Fire Toolbox released a new version that is said to be compatible w/ HD10 2021. in the same thread, sum1 mentioned the codename for HD10 2021 is "Tronia"!

how are you enabling split screen on the 2019 hd10. Mine doesn't have it.
Mine is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. Ordered a replacement after my older son needed my 2019 model as an ebook reader for tech-school classes. Not going to worry about hopes for an unlock or root method, and just set it up and use it. If someone does produce an unlock or root, I'll certainly use it, but I won't pin my hopes on getting such access.
Got mine last week and have been putting it through the paces. I'm coming from a Samsung 10.1 A7 tablet that was just a tad too sluggish (really noticed it rotating back and forth) for me and was down to 6GB of space on the 32GB internal storage. There's no doubt the A7's screen is a tad sharper (thanks to the 2K resolution) and speakers were better.
On this one I used the Fire Toolbox (awesome tool!) to install Google Services, Nova Launcher and delete some unwanted apps. After playing with the grid system, for some reason on mine if I went above 7 on the height one in landscape mode the icons would be really small. I ultimately settled with a 7x7 grid layout and while I don't like the spacing in portrait mode height wise think that works the best for me. Installed all the apps I want through Google Play Store and the Appstore. I couldn't use it if I didn't have access to that.
Def way snappier then the A7. It rotates from portrait to landscape modes quicker, and loads everything else just a little faster too. I know it's the same CPU from last year in it, but the 4GB of Ram vs 3GB on the A7 seem like that's a huge leap forward. The A7 def has the better screen (2K vs HD) and speakers. But for my uses (checking feeds in the morning on Feedly, watching games on to keep track of, and watching videos while traveling are my main tasks. I can't justify spending over $500 for a tablet, so this at it's price point is a winner in my book.
Now my gripes. No way to change the timer of the lock screen before you need to re-enter the pin code again right? I've looked around in the settings and just can't find it. Still would like the pin on it, but would like to change that timer. I have my SD card mounted as internal storage. Sometimes it loses it's connection and on the lock screen shows it's lost it. But it finds it right away when I log back in. Not too thrilled with the case selection so far. The first 2 I tried didn't work for me (the official Amazon wouldn't fold back right and the other case I tried the plate where you snapped it into was backwards in my opinion. Getting another one in today to try out.
I'll see on Prime Day if there's any other sales and if there are I can still return this one to get it at the better price. Otherwise, maybe I'll try for a Samsung Tab S7 or S7+ if there's a good sale on those. But other then that, so far I'm pretty happy with this tablet outside of the Nova Launcher spacing. This is a keeper so far.
yanksno1 - Have you started using the split screen functionality? Have you found it useful? I would really like to see some screen shots of it in use if at all possible. This and the increased RAM is the biggest selling points for me.

I sold a S5e and bought an HD 10 9th. But there is no way I'm claiming the HD compares with the S5e. It was merely that the S5e was overkill for a tablet I was using as an eReader. I also still have a Tab A 2020 and the HD. only beats it in battery life. Slower tablets do use less battery.
Got one for my wife and one for myself during prime days this past week. Hers is to replace a Galaxy Tab A 10.1(2019) We both use them for light gaming, web surfing and media consumption. I have already run mine through the toolkit and removed the lock screen ads, installed google play etc. Hers will be left stock for now. I am quite impressed with them. They run all my games(nothing too taxing Asphalt 9 is the biggest resource hog) For the Prime Days price, they are hard to beat. I am quite happy with mine and plan to install an SD card for extra storage shortly(mainly for movie and TV show storage)
Ordered one from Amazon, and Ive been given a 3-6 month delivery date for it
" Arriving 29 Sep - 5 Dec "
New update - 6th of December 6 Months!!!! and thats with a prime mebership, and an amazon warehouse 15 minutes drive away
Is this thing available or have thye been re called?? it just seems odd that it has a six month shipping date

Guessing that they sold so well for prime and the semi-conductor shortage they might just be out of stock and waiting on them to arrive from China
Got the HD 10 Plus during Prime Day, had the previous HD 10 2019 and the 2017 before that.
The upgrade from 2017 -> 2019 was okay because of the processor upgrade but still had slowdowns and was sluggish when opening different apps.
The 2019 -> 2021 Plus version was a great upgrade, that 4GB ram definitely got rid of all the slowdowns the previous generation suffered. Smaller bezels and a bit lighter so it's a bit easier to hold. The 2019 screen has an issue where the color seemed a bit too oversaturated/overbrightened, the 2021 doesn't seem to have that issue. My 2019 one also had a lot of backlight bleed while my 2021 doesn't have any at all...though that probably depends on your luck.
Overall very good upgrade considering i only payed $40 because of the trade-in/promo codes Amazon was giving away.
Very happy with mine it's a bit lighter than the last model and feels a bit better balanced in the hand. The screen looks great but I'm having an issue using a keyboard/mouse with it. It keeps highlighting my selections, images, and videos with a grey overlay.
Go two Fire HD 10 Plus on Prime day for 110 euros each. I am pretty happy. Our previous tablets were Fire HD 10 but from 2017. It is a night and day difference.
I just found out that Fire HD 10 (11th gen) does NOT support exFAT format SD cards, only FAT32 is supported. That means you can only write files smaller than 4GB onto the SD card.
You can use the Paragon exFAT/NTFS app but it only works with USB-OTG devices, it won't work with the internal SD card reader. Apparently exFAT used to work in older gens but now Amazon wants you to use their streaming service.
You can use this Amazon tablet as:
Drawing tablet (with a VirtualTablet app)
Virtual MIDI keyboard (for music production, tested in FL Studio)
Simple server (like hosting your own websites, file server, or Minecraft server)
Smart home dashboard
Digital clock (if you don't have in your house)
Digital photo frame
Echo Show (your Fire table is registered into your Amazon account to use Show Mode)
Fire Toolbox cleaned my new 2021 HD 10 tablet nicely. But need to run a USB GPS module on it for boating Nav, & it's not operational (no led present like on Windows USB). USB OTG app states I need to add xml file: android.hardware.usb.host.xml to folder: /system/etc/permissions, but need it rooted to do this. Any experience with a root solution for latest Fire OS please?
