UI navigating studder - Google Pixel 4 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Anyone else noticing you stuttering and lagging? I noticed a lot more when I drop down the animation to 1/2 in developer settings. But recently I've been noticing it at default as well. It's really annoying to see a flagship phone of this caliber having this issue.
While I love everything else about the phone it seems like UI isn't optimized as well.
I'm still not on the November update so 90hz isn't on all the time as well. Perhaps that's the reason...

mine has been fine and really smooth.

Yeah give the November update a try.

Mine's been great. At times the swipe up and hold for recents comes up not as smooth as it should, but, that's it.

[Q] Screen responsiveness - YouTube lag - Overall speed of the device

Now I understand that next week we may see 3.1 which will supposedly fix the youtube lag. We will have to wait to see this.
What I want to know is if the latest firmware fixes some of the screen responsiveness and overall lag of the device. I mean I am getting a lot of lag on some websites to where they become almost unusable. NAMELY XDA! Also I am having to tap 2 or sometimes 3 times on items anywhere in the OS in order to get a response.
I noticed that the latest update says it "improves responsiveness", so I'm wondering if this is fixed. I am on 20110423. Can anyone confirm that the latest update does indeed improve touch screen responsiveness or speeds up the overall UI including the browser.
I was reading that the mcr hr5 rom speeds up the phone a bit. Can anyone comment on that before I take the plunge? The rom says it updates to the latest version, I also read that the latest updates lock the bootloader. I don't want to load up that rom to find out that I am now stock not being able to run custom roms.
Other than the above mentioned things I enjoy the device very much. Much more than an ipad. Only thing I can't stand is that the case creaks (SLIGHTLY) and that there is no oleophobic coating. The screen is trashed with fingerprints in under an hour.

Ill be updating tonight or tomorrow as this unit has screen bleed and is going back anyway.
Ill post after the update on the screen responsiveness and lagginess of the stock browser. I'm not sure that much will change. I think 3.1 will fix YouTube. Hopefully it will fix these other issues as well.
Hopefully I can find another unit without screen bleed. Otherwise its back to waiting for the galaxy 10.1

Xda is slow because there are so many ad links. Even my desktop is slow.
If you want to know about the 3.1 performance broese the Xoom forums. Users there have done a lot off testing.

I shouldn't have to do that My atrix runs the full version.

I can confirm that the latest update does nothing to help screen responsiveness and the lag experienced on the full XDA website.
I am updating ADB right now so I can try the prime rom. Will know later today.

I've heard the "ice cube" background is not good for overall lag.
I can confirm that 3.1 fixed all of these issues

Describe your lag...

Mine was pretty bad, but after doing a factory reset twice now, I can report my lag is not bad.
I see a SLIGHT stutter in the opening/closing animations of apps. Definitely lag in the app drawer. The lockscreen is probably where I see the most unresponsiveness/lag. You hit the power button and you have to wait a second, then its fine. The animation from the lock screen to the home screen almost always stutters. The default browser seems about 95% zippy and responsive. Pinch to zoom stutters occasionally. But touchwiz seems very smooth and fluid for the most part. The camera takes perfect pictures. There also is some shutter lag, but not bad.
Overall, the phone is nice, but I am going to be calling Samsung/AT&T and do whatever it takes for them to fix this. This is unacceptable. I noticed that the apps I put on my phone, the more the lag grew. I disabled a lot of the AT&T bloatware and Samsung garbage. Right when I performed a factory reset my phone had ZERO lag. So those getting new devices are probably experiencing what I did. The lag slowly came back, but not as bad as before.
My only reason for not returning it is, once this device gets roms, its going to be a beast. But right now, its performing like a 2011 device.
I reset mine 20 times and it still lags

How bad though, and where?
I've done one factory reset and things have improved quite a bit. However, it's still not performing anywhere near where it should be. Can't wait for AOKP..

mine was sluggish too.. When opping application, can feel the jerk...
slight lag when opening messaging, and phone. also, the occasional stutter when swiping thru home screens and app drawer pages. samsung better acknowledge and release an update!!! im still contemplating on returning this!!! s2 was beast otb, s3 was better but s4 otb just feels unfinished to me.

What about with the lockscreen?
The S2 was such a beast OTB, I actually miss it.
I just got off the phone with Samsung support and they took notes on this issue. Of course, this was the first he heard of it. We gotta inform Samsung there is a problem.

I've read them all, trust me. Nobody exactly describes what is going on with their lag. Some are reporting minor lag, while others are reporting much worse lag. I was hoping everyone call describe exactly where the lag is and when its happening.
i guess i'm lucky. I dont experience any lag, whatsoever.

Dude this is the 2nd thread you made about the lag, theres already 20 threads about it
To be honest I kind of agree with the OP. I've read many lag threads but nobody mentions what's lagging. The only lag I've noticed on mine is the gallery is super slow. At least 3 seconds to load from home. I haven't tried quickpic yet though. Mostly because I'm finding air view useful.
But really, other than the gallery, zero lag.

Hmmmm is this like the homebutton lag like the first GS2 had ? or is it worst ?
Hey guys just wanted to say, I followed the trickster mod in the general section and my lag has been reduced by about 95%. My quadrant scores are also a bit higher.. Might wanna check it out

I deleted about 97 apps / processes and have another 4 frozen, turned animations to zero, forced enable GPU rendering, installed Nova launcher, and am running Trickster..
The entire phone is lightning fast now with the exception of the keyboard opening and closing. The Samsung KB is unusable.. Swiftkey works much better but it does still have very minor lag.
The steps I have taken are insane and should not have to be done on a phone carrying these specs. This phone should flat out scream right out of the box.

Yea I reduced my animations to 0.5x and it definitely helped. Everyone should at least do that much. Most people do that on custom ROMs anyway.

Does the LG android skin lag/stutter like samsung's s6/s7 touchwiz?

For anyone that claims there's no lag on the G4, s6 or even s7 please don't even reply because you are just wasting time. I'm guessing anyone who ever experienced stock android can answer this and hopefully one of them can answer this. Please let me know if it lags and stutters, I am thinking of trying out this phone for 3 months
I have both the lg g5 and s7 edge and my onest opinion the lg g5 does not lag like the s7
Sent from my LG-H830 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I've owned an S7 and returned it back after dealing with the G5.
So, no the G5 does not lag like the S7.
I see the same. My G5 is quicker and smoother than my S7 edge. The S7E was super smooth but as with most if not all Samsungs lag develops after some time. I love Samsung devices. Heck I always have one around but I will not deny that there is a little lag.

The phone feels much slower than a Nexus device. My Nexus 6 and Nexus 5x running pure Nexus Roms blew it out of the water. You can tell tho it's the launcher, I never tried the Google now launcher cause tap to wake wouldn't work. The LG launcher seems to focus more on looking smooth and fluid than being fast.

I use Nova Launcher and it's as smooth as buttered glass. Menus, settings menu, basically everything that has been LG'ed is also plenty fast

If the smooth animation is not desired, one simply has to disable the animation in the developer's options in the settings area.. Not fair to bash the G5 for animation that we actually can turn off. I'm just saying.
I'm clearly bashing the launcher, not the phone.

Seconded. Put on Nova, custom icons, and changed System settings to a single list - snappy as all get out.

That doesn't fix the bloated lg ui, same as you can't get rid of touchwiz stutters on 2015 phone's... I tested the s7 and its still not as smooth as a nexus or my htc 10

Massive lag in scrolling

This thing is really not very smooth scrolling and the worse culprit is Facebook.
Anyone else finding this? UK phone exynos processor.

I would suggest that FB app is the culprit........had issues on my Note 4, and HTC One before that.

I'm coming from the S7 Edge, using the S8+ now, it's smoother than on the S7 for sure. No lag at all
Experiencing serious scrolling lag in all apps in my s8+ exnos global version
Zero lag on my EU Exynos S8+.
i got the scrolling lag issiue, too Exynos EU (Germany) pre-ordered form samsung directly.
i do have an lag issiue in the gallary app, too .... sometimes i scroll down the screen do not know scrolling down or up and the screen (picture) "vibrates up and down"
I had this when I first installed it. Clear cache from the start up menu. Should help no end.
BTW it made no difference when I cleared cache from the storage setting - do it from the start up menu. Bixby and volume down I think...whilst starting.
The only weirdness I've had is in Nova launcher on the up and down app drawer, when you pull it down slowly, sometimes it judders in small steps until its closed but it only does that if you pull it down really slowly and stop after a few mm. Other than that I've had no lag whatsoever.
Try changing screen resolution then changing it back to what you had it on (FHD to QHD etc) My device smooths out significant. Not sure how this makes sense but it works. Try it!
I had same problem.. i unistalled bixby button remapping apps i had 2 of them... Now its buttery smooth.. try it, i dont remember which apps i had but you can try unistalling remapping apps
If you have any accessibility service enabled, disable it
Mine scrolling is extremely smooth everywhere. No issue at all. I am using Exynos edition with QHD+ resolution.
Same issues on my S8+ Exynos! Slow and laggy!
Yeah, same here. It's really bad on Chrome

Nova Launcher

Anyone tried Nova Launcher in 4a yet? Waiting for mine.
Yes, rocking it the same way as before
Works just fine for me too.

Imported my settings from a OnePlus phone and it setup everything on the 4a exactly as it was. No A10 gestures though, still.
Wallpapers ok? Easy fix, but my 5t is 1080x2560, going to the 4a 1080x2340. What seems odd is the 4a display looks taller (or same) and much narrower, than my 5t. Would have thought the opposite with that resolution.

It was one of the first things I installed and it's working perfectly.
I like how it put back all my icons and folders exactly where I had them. When I reinstalled apps, they went to the correct spots, with the correct icon I had chosen.
FYI, I just got the Android 11 beta 3 on 4a and current Nova version doesn't stick as default launcher however if you sign up for Nova beta, that will stick as default launcher.
Mine still shows a 9/10 delivery, so a11 might be officially out by then... I'm on Nova beta, so should work.

Man, there is one in every crowd, I guess. Yes, it works great. The only thing not working for me is turning scrolling wallpaper off. But, that might be an issue with an older live wallpaper and not Nova. Who cares if it is supported?

I do. Doesn't mean I won't try it and perhaps remain on Nova as it has been my go-to launcher for 5+ years on every Android device. That said, I place a high value on stability. Don't want to discover Nova crapped the bed after a routine 4a update. Hopefully official support from the developer is on the roadmap.
Not sure why you think it's not supported. PS description says it's good for all Android phones, up to Android 11 dp4.

Installed - no issues other than those common to all Android 10 builds. Was transformative wrt device appeal. Not fond of native launcher but wanted to hang with it for awhile to assess the 4a in its native state. Still not sure I'm going to keep it. Unquestionably a great phone at the price point but not sure it's better than what I have now given personal usage.
