[Guide] Pixel 4 XL (Unlocked from Google Store) - Root and Bootloader Unlocking - Google Pixel 4 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Anyone root the Pixel 4 XL from Google Play store yet?
Can the Pixel 3 XL Android 10 root method be used for Pixel 4 XL Android 10 root?
*Update2 (10/24/2019 6:00PM): Factory Images have been released!
They are available at below links. Multiple users say they have root working now.
*Note: Multiple images are listed. For my Pixel 4 XL 128GB purchased directly from Google Play store, the image is the first one "10.0.0 (QD1A.190821.007, Oct 2019)". You can verify in "Settings" >> "About Phone"... near bottom you will see "Build Number"
Factory: https://developers.google.com/android/images#coral
OTA: https://developers.google.com/android/ota#coral
According to @Samg381 the method to gain root is to follow the guide outlined here: https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html#boot-image-patching
Below are steps I personally followed:
Download latest Magisk Manager - https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/download/manager-v7.3.5/MagiskManager-v7.3.5.apk
Install Magisk manager on my Pixel 4 XL
Download latest factory image with build number that matches my phone's version from this URL: https://developers.google.com/android/images#coral
Extract the zip file contents
You will see one more zip file, extract those contents
Copy the boot.img file to your phone (you can plugin USB to your PC and put it in your "Downloads" folder
Open Magisk Manager, click "Advanced" >> "Recovery Mode"
Click the top "Install" button
When prompted click Install again, then "Select and Patch a file" >> Select the boot.img file you copied to your pixel 4 xl earlier.
it will create a new file "/storage/emulated/0/Download/magisk_patched.img"
Plugin your phone to your PC again via USB, copy this new file in same folder as your adb sdk files.
open cmd prompt type:
adb devices
*Note: unlock your phone and approve ADB access if prompted
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot devices
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
If it works you should get somthing like
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
target reported max download size of 268435456 bytes
sending 'boot_a' (32092 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.167s]
writing 'boot_a'...
OKAY [ 0.325s]
finished. total time: 1.494s
Reboot your phone, open Magisk manager again, and verify it shows you now have root!
I would recommend everyone who plans to root unlock their bootloader NOW as it does wipe your data just like other Pixel phones have when unlocking bootloader... I already unlocked my bootloader.
FYI, the process to unlock Pixel 4 XL bootloader is easy:
Boot Pixel 4 XL, go through initial setup guide (do not bother adding account as you will wipe data shortly)
"Settings" >> "About Phone" >> Tap "build number" about 10 times till "You are a developer"
"Settings" >> "System" >> "Advanced" >> "Developer Options"
Check "OEM unlocking"
If "OEM Unlocking" is greyed out, either "Bootloader is already unlocked", or you need to do factory reset, then go through steps 1-4 again. On my phone I had to wipe data once, then OEM Unlock
Check "USB Debugging"
Connect Pixel 4 XL to your PC with SDK tools installed
adb devices
unlock your Pixel 4 XL... you will see a prompt asking for ADB permissions, say yes
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot devices
fastboot flashing unlock
Pixel 4 XL will now ask if you want to unlock bootloader, press volume up or down once... then power button once to confirm. WARNING it will wipe all your data...

You didn't try since you have unlocked your bootloader
Mine is still locked.
Waiting for John to root his first.

It's not possible to root without the factory image. We probably won't see the factory image until the 24th.

And if we bought through carrier will there be any way to root? I've always bought from Google, but I couldn't afford it this time, so I went with the T-Mobile jump plan. Then went to unlock the bootloader on it today and says not available for carrier devices. Feel like I'm dying a bit on the inside

Maybe there will be an unlock method in the future, but I wouldn't count on it anytime soob

Unlocked my google version right out of the gate through settings. No ADB required. Waiting on a root method now.

That only enabled your ability to unlock. You still have to do it through fastboot and wipe your data.

Verizon is a different animal, they apparently won't allow you to unlock it at all. But the other companies, I don't see why, after you pay it off, that you couldn't unlock it. Carrier locked = sim locked. You pay off a device, you get the sim unlocked. I'm actually rather surprised that there are that many people out there that would expect carriers to allow their devices to be unlocked, even if they're not paid for. You may have to wait a bit, but I see no reason why they won't let you unlock after it's paid off.

No luck unlocking my Verizon XL. With a quick glance at the VZ 3 XL posts - I'm assuming I shouldn't hold my breath?

Oh? I was not aware that was required. Thanks for the information.
Looking forward to root so I can re-enable Google's Daydream View app. Dumb Google, why would you bother to set the phone as not supported? If Google does not support Daydream View, why not "let it free" for anyone to use, especially phones like Pixel 4 XL with 90Hz display!
I did manually install the APK and while it does the prompt saying not supported, it does still render smoothly (did not try forcing 90hz, feel like it should have been smoother... it rendered without any issues, but not sure if it was 90hz smooth or not).
Anyone try any of the other VR apps like VR Ridge? I had tried that with my original Pixel XL but the framerate was never very good, I wonder if Pixel 4 XL is good enough to make the purchase worth it (of VR Ridge that is)

People on the Verizon pixel 2 and P2XL are still holding their breath....so yeah!

Please heed my warning, I have spent months of my life waiting on XDA for root methods on Verizon phones.
Don't expect root anytime soon (if at all) if you have the Verizon version. I hate to be defeatist, but I don't want others to suffer as I have in the past.
Your best bet is to return, or sell your verizon phone and purchase a google version.

Picture 24th, the factory images should drop, we can then patch the boot.img and obtain root. Version users probably are getting the shaft again...

What about other carriers? T-Mobile shows OEM unlocking is not available for carrier devices

None of you guys tried pulling your boot.img and patching it in magisk?

On similar devices such as OnePlus you have to get it carrier unlocked and then you can unlock the bootloader afterwards, this one is likely going to be the same.

As far as I can tell we need factory images or a working custom recovery to grab it from the phone and we have neither at the moment.

In order to allay concerns about security, the major carriers don't want their phones to have an unlocked bootloader. This is an effort to be more enterprise user friendly.

Anyone know of a working root?

Just got a Nokia 3.1 to use a testing tool and other fun stuff, and therefore would like to root it. Does anyone of you know of a working root of the 3.1?
So this phone is a no go for root and custom roms I guess.

Why do you think so? Bootloader can be unlocked via Developer settings, and I think there is no special magic preventing this device from rooting.
I would try rooting it by flashing some SuperSU zips or something like that, but I didn't try it yet
Has anyone checked this out? I haven't purchased a Nokia 3.1 but am considering it. I went so far as to create a Nokia account and there is a bootloader unlock apk, as well as an unlock.key that can be downloaded, and there are clear instructions on the Nokia page itself.. Since I don't have the phone, I did not attempt to proceed. However, if the 3.1 qualifies (I don't see why it wouldn't) then getting root should be as easy as following Magisk instructions.
There is even a page for the open source releases.
If I were to get the 3.1, my main objective would likely be to just obtain root. Looks like it should be doable.
Edit - well over 100 views since I posted this but no one has tried to unlock and/or root. I thought that was the purpose of this thread.

That is unfortunate! Perhaps, does activating Developer Options allow to select OEM Unlocking and USB Debuging, then running the Unlocking App? To run step 5 of 5 (see NOKIA INSTRUCTIONS below) you would need to have USB Debugging enabled anyway. Nowhere in the instructions is that mentioned.
FYI - Activate Developer Options: Go to Settings>About Phone and tap Build Number 7 times. Back out to access Developer Options.
Also, I do not have this phone but am interested in it. I cannot confirm if any of the advice I am giving will work, but it is what I would try.
NOKIA INSTRUCTIONS
Introduction
Firstly, we need to validate that the phone you would like to unlock is operated by you. There are a few steps to this, so we ask that you carefully follow all instructions. Let’s get started.
To participate, simply complete the following steps:
1. Please download the Nokia Bootloader Unlocker app. You can download the apk from this link and install the apk on your device. If you don’t understand how to install an apk on your device, please do not unlock the bootloader on your device. Doing so will void your phone's warranty and may cause irreparable damage.
2. Launch the Nokia Bootloader Unlocker app and fill your email information and click “Submit”.
3. The app will display a code. Please enter this in the form below along with your email address. Then press "Request to Unlock"
Your bootloader can now be unlocked. Follow the instructions below:
Step 1/5
Check the email you entered during registration. You should receive an email with a message as follows:
Hi, Thanks for requesting the unlocking bootloader. Please download your unlock key from the following link. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Download the unlock key and save it as “unlock.key”.
Step 2/5
Power off your device. Once powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button.
Step 3/5
While keeping the Volume Down button pressed, connect the device to the computer via USB cable. The device will boot into “Download mode”. If you have difficulty, try powering up normally, power off the device again and start back from Step 1.
Step 4/5
Download the following fastboot binary for your OS here.
Step 5/5
Open a command prompt:
Windows: Start > cmd
Mac: Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app
Linux: Terminal
Navigate to the directory where the previously downloaded unlock.key file is saved. Then enter the following commands:
fastboot flash unlock unlock.key
fastboot oem unlock
If successful, you should see the below message:
Unlock success!
Then reboot the device by entering the following command:
fastboot reboot
You are done!
It doesn't work either way. I tried with both those options enabled and disabled but the program always crashes. It's interesting to note that the app itself fails to install through chrome or "Files" app. Gives an error saying "Can't open app". I only managed to install it through ES File Explorer. Could it be because of I bought the phone on a Vodafone store? I can't find the original stock rom to flash, sadly.

I have been researching this and have found that, as of this writing, only the Nokia 8 qualifies for bootloader unlocking. See here. The only thing holding me back from jumping on this Nokia 3.1 is the inability to unlock the bootloader (and maybe the lack of fingerprint sensor.) Hopefully it gets "approved soon".
Currently the oem unlock using the Nokia bootloader unlock only works for Nokia 8
is there a way to root the 3.1 yet successfully? im a noob at this stuff and don't want to screw my phone.

No, not until Nokia decides to allow users to unlock bootloader.
What about the 3.1 plus. I've already unlocked OEM. I just started looking, thought I'd start here first.

It doesn't matter if you have enabled "OEM unlocking" option in Developer settings, currently Nokia doesn't allow unlocking of bootloader and thus rooting device, unless you are Nokia 8 user. You can try this, but it will crash almost for sure.
As far as I can tell, my bootloader is unlocked. I am a noob of course, but I have been researching this topic for a couple of months now. I could be mistaken in thinking "upload" mode is it, but I can't seem to figure out the difference. Otherwise, I don't know what to do next.

To get to "Upload" mode? Assuming it's the same for the 3.1 Plus-maybe I should have specified that-holding power button and volume up during startup will open "Upload" mode.
You can also use adb with the command "reboot bootloader." For that reason, I think it's the bootloader, but I could be wrong.
Sorry if I was a bit misleading and it is totally different on the Nokia 3.1, I was just some kinda hopeful to actually see people talk about it.

I'm not bringing any sizable programming skills to the table unless somebody wants to teach me real fast.
Hopefully, I bring tidings of great joy. So I got two these Nokia's and they're both locked. to the carrier, Cricket. I suspect they are at least unlawfully locked. . My understanding is you can't lock to used phone especially if it's been sold as a prepaid phone. I believe this falls under the reseller flex policy. I bought it off of eBay from a guy that sells nothing but phones and he's been extremely cagey about what he'll admit to, so I called the carrier. I literally waited an hour and a half on the phone because I am falling asleep and I was on a computer speaker phone so it kept on the time of the call. I only held that long because I had fallen asleep. Anyway since I'm not in a cricket or AT&T customer then don't plan to eitherbe they could care less about me it actually told me they didn't have any information on the phone after I gave them the IMEI number.
My guess is the fcc's not going to do much because it's a trump Administration. So I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with Nokia and well at least they're interesting I think Microsoft paid between 7 and 12 billion to acquire them I recently sold them off for like a box of jujyfruits. Anyway they're committed to customer service so I figure my predicament might give me an in there.
So those unlock codes that it was a link earlier in the post for that's just to unlock the bootloader, right? You know this is a pretty decent phone for a low-end guy I got the newer 3.1 C it's got Cricket's bootloader in bloatware on it,
takes up a ton of space.
I mean it probably won't happen but if Nokia ever goes public again - I think the acquiring companies. Their eye on the prize and they're going to kick some ass. So I'm all in on this let's get this done. If you want I can see what I can do about asking Nokia 4 whatever it's going to take just to keep me a satisfied customer since they know Cricket/ATT isn't following the Obama regs.
Oof... It would be beautiful if Nokia customer support could guide us onto rooting this phone.
its so simple to unlock oem on nokia 3.1 plus. no third app needed. after developer option on -> go to developer option setting -> there is toggle button to on/off developer option , just use that toggle to off it and on it -> press yes for on dev options -> and select oem unlock. that all
It is pretty straightforward once you have unlocked bootloader (not by Nokia). If you want, you can simply dump boot_a or boot_b with SPflash tool, patch in Magisk app, and reflash.
Otherwise you can use my TWRP (NO TOUCH, and has disabled dm-verity). Please note it's only working on build v3.180, updates not supported - as it was only needed for my project.

Android 9: Pixel 2 Downgrading questions

These may be stupid questions but I have tried everything I can think of.
I am on a Verizon pixel 2, locked bootloader, running the current release of android 9.
I am unable to toggle the "OEM Unlocking" option in developer settings
I followed this guide to enable the toggle but ADB/Fastboot still gives me the "Flashing Unlock is not allowed" message when i try to run "fastboot oem unlock" or "fastboot flashing unlock".
Ultimately I would like to be able to root my Pixel 2, but right now I would settle for being able to downgrade Google Play Services to version 12.6.85 because reasons. There does not appear to be a compatible APK for this version of play services and Android 9 on the Pixel 2 (that I have been able to find yet)
Is anyone aware of how I could do the following:
1. unlock my bootloader?
or
2. downgrade to any android 8 version?
or
3. downgrade google play services to 12.6.85 on Pixel 2 Android 9?
The guide you posted is for the original Pixel.
Verizon Pixel 2 has a locked bootloader, and Verizon has disallowed the option of unlocking.
Early in the year, a user here stumbled upon a few commands that would bootloader-unlock the vzw p2. However, any firmware past January (I think) has been updated to protect against this exploit. So you missed the window on that.
I don't think android allows downgrading while the bootloader is locked.
I'm not sure about downgrading play services, but you could easily get the desired .apk from apk-mirror, and attempt to install it. I'm guessing you're going to get an error. In that case, considering you don't have system r/w permission, I don't see any way you'd be able to downgrade play services.
So, short of someone coming along and finding another way to bypass vzw's restrictions, you're stuck on 9.

By that do you mean that you submitted a warranty claim to google? You must not have. I am a Project Fi customer so I never have to think about such things. But yeah, if you bought your pixel from the google website, hooked it up to Verizon service and THEN called Verizon customer service and requested a warranty replacement or an Insurance claim then yeah. In that case you probably would receive a device with a locked bootloader because that's all Verizon deals with as far as I know. I submitted a warranty claim to Project Fi and The device they sent me came with an unlocked bootloader. I think I would have thrown a fit if they had sent a locked one. I would have been on the phone with a Supervisor stating that "the unlocked bootloader feature was 100% the reason I chose to buy the phone directly from google!" I would not have left them alone until I got my way. lol

Yes, as have many others. I'm from Canada, device was bought through google and RMA'd through google. Has nothing to do with Verizon, there are tons of threads about it.
Another alternative, albeit a bit more convoluted, would be to update your current device to the latest update. Back up your user data as best you can, then factory reset, put it on Swappa, and then use the proceeds to purchase a secondhand Google variant with identical specs as the original. At least that way you won't have to deal with any more bootloader shenanigans. If your device is still in good shape and you're savvy enough about it, you may be able to come close to break-even.

Bootloader

So, who is going to take the plunge and test the bootloader unlock commands from the Pixel XL 2? I'll try it when I get home but we're talking 3 more hours.
That's what I'm waiting to hear, especially on a VZW model. Mine won't be here until tomorrow.
I'll have to wait till I get home to do this as well. Won't be for another 5ish hours.

Too bad Verizon versions will be locked down
Bootloader unlocked. Didn't attempt unlock critical since another person said it came back with invalid argument. Will see. Waiting for factory images to attempt root. Love this phone. My Pixel 2xl is at the bottom of the Wisconsin river. Or maybe in the Gulf of Mexico by now . Lol. Don't need it anymore anyway. Would have been nice to give it to one of my woman though.

From Google's factory image page, you should NOT do an unlock critical on anything OTHER than the P2XL with a specific bootloader version.
For Pixel 2 XL only with loader version prior to TMZ20a: the critical partitions may also need to be unlocked before flashing. The unlock can be performed with this command, and should NOT be done on other devices:

I just double checked and it only took about 4 days. Apparently those 4 days (without root) felt like a few weeks to me since that how I remembered it

It felt like a week to me. Lol. I wonder how long it will take this year? We got are phones alot quicker. I'm hopeful for soon
Enabled wifi, skipped everything else.
Settings, system, about Phone, build number, Tap tap taparoo until developer is enabled
Go into Developer options, enable OEM unlocking.
Start latest ADB
Enter into fast boot, I just restarted with hold power and volume down
Or you can simply paste
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Paste
Code:
fastboot flashing unlock
Then I started transferring to the new device.
Now that it's unlocked you won't have to reset to default when root comes available.
OK not sure why this isn't working, but I can't get it to work. I have the unlocked version from google direct. I have installed adb and fastboot (I have done this with past phones, past pixels so I'm familiar...).
I enabled oem unlock and usb debugging in developer options...
adb devices detected the phone, I was able to "adb reboot bootloader", then I checked "fastboot devices" and again I saw my device. I tried "fastboot flashing unlock", "fastboot flashing unlock_critical", and "fastboot oem unlock".
With oem unlock I got an invalid command error. with the other 2 all I got was the list of available fastboot commands.
Do I have the wrong fastboot somehow?

I think USB Debugging and OEM unlock are toggles in Developer options after you activate Developer options (look at the post above yours)
Do you have the latest SDK Platform-tools r28.0.1?
I think you have to open a Command Prompt in the adb/fastboot folder then type fastboot flashing unlock and press enter.

Thanks for responding! Yes, it is r28.0.1, yes I toggled usb debugging and oem unlock in developer options, and yes I opened the command prompt in the fastboot folder....so I feel like it should be working...but here I am.

Emergency help: after locking bootloader, google pixel won't boot!!

Hi,
I have once rooted my google pixel, but I changed my mind, and decided to unroot it and lock the bootloader.
I chose "lock" in the twrp menu, and I entered an endless loop.
Now the bootloader is locked and won't boot. The phone just splashes the initial screen and off, a few seconds after that, splashes the screen, and off,.....repeatedly. It looks like as soon as the initial "GOOGLE" screen appears, the phone resets itself.
I turned on with the volume down button on, and connect to the desktop computer (I use linux with adb and fastboot installed which work perfectly) and enter "fastboot flashing unlock", but it returns
Code:
$ fastboot flashing unlock
FAILED (remote: 'oem unlock is not allowed')
Finished. Total time: 0.009s
I also tried to enter recovery mode, but it began to splash initial screen on and off again.
How can I recover from this situation?
Thanks in advance!
edit:
"fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.3.0-0-sailfish.img" now returns like this.
Code:
$ fastboot flash recover twrp-3*img
Sending 'recover' (31000 KB) OKAY [ 0.892s]
Writing 'recover' (bootloader) Command is not supported.
(bootloader) Please unlock device to enable this command.
FAILED (remote: '')
Finished. Total time: 1.074s
edit2:
Looks like I unchecked "OEM UNLOCK" in Development Option and locked......can I recover from this?
Have a search using "bricked pixel locked bootloader" and trawl through the threads it throws up for workarounds etc. Some people have had some success depending on what the device was running but it's usually a non recoverable scenario.
Thanks. I'll give it a try. I'm almost abandoning.....

I tried it now. Most of the procedures were fine, but the important parts (write .img) failed. I attach the logfile. I abandoned....

I am on Android Q beta 5 now and i do not have that option in the development options at all.
I also have Nexus 3, 4 & 5 and i played so much with them i can't even remember. Never had any problems. I have repartitioned them, changed mac addresses and many things but they never bricked. Do i have to worry about google pixel when i'll unlock bootloader? I got it about 3-4 days ago. I thought they are as cool to play with as Nexus 4 & 5 were. Is it not right?

I've learned. "Don't root. Don't unlock bootloader."
@matusala you can unlock the bootloader and flash stuff as you did on the nexus line of devices. I'm on Q beta 5 with bl unlocked, I've had lineage running on it for a while and also had magisk etc installed. The key with these pixel A/B slot devices is that your system must be 100% stock before relocking the bootloader. If it is not It will end up bricked as you will no longer have a working boot image or recovery as they are in the same partition. The rule is to never relock the bootloader unless you are 100% sure that your system is 100% back to full stock.
I certainly won't be re locking my bootloader, ever!
@junglism93 How did you unlock on Q beta 5? There is no "OEM UNLOCK" option in Development Options in here. Do i have to just run fastboot flashing unlock and that's it?
I know this pixel A/B slot thing. My router has exactly same layout and when i flash system on it i get to choose where to flash. I can have different version in A/B slot of my router. Is on google pixel the same? Do you have to choose which slot to flash? Can you have custom rom on A slot and full stock rom on B slot?

I unlocked my bootloader back on stock pie, i have it on mine but it's greyed out as already unlocked so no idea on that one! My knowledge on A/B slot ain't great, it's just what I've read on here re the pixel bricking scenario so I didn't do the same when I unlocked my bootloader etc. I doubt running a separate ROM on each slot works as when you perform an update it will write to slot a or b (the slot you aren't using) and then hop onto the updated slot upon reboot, alsoif the update borks you can roll back to the previous slot and still have a working system.
That's about as far as my knowledge of it goes mate
Leaving the bootloader unlocked doesn't void the warranty or things like that, also it's a life saviour if *anything* goes wrong, even with official updates. Why not leaving that on?
The lesson here is not "don't root" or "don't unlock the bootloader", cause with an unlocked bootloader you can recover from pretty any kind of software malfunction.
Unfortunately, with a locked bootloader I've never seen anyone succesfully recover the device, cause you cannot send commands.

Hmmm......correction.
I would say:
"Root with caution. Otherwise don't root."
Rooting doesn't necessarily cause a trouble. Usually it helps. But my Google Pixel used to show alert screen message upon every boot. It's a bit messy.
@TENN3R I have Android Q beta 5 on my pixel and i can't unlock bootloader. OEM unlock is not in my developer options menu. How can i unlock it's bootloader?
I tried unlocking and now i see that option in developer options, but it's greyed out and i can't press it. What can i do.
It seems these pixel phones are garbage compared to nexus line. Those were so much better!

I think I read somewhere in the android beta subreddit that is a Q beta related problem, and in Pie should work.
How did you unlock it since it wasn't there? Is the toggle grayed out in "off" position or "on"? Cause if it's enabled than you're ok

I followed this guide and it worked. It unlocked my bootloader. https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/how-to/how-to-unlock-bootloader-verizon-pixel-t3796030
Now option is greyed out again in "off" position but it says "Bootloader already unlocked"
Maybe i got verizon model but in cell-unlocked state, because seller had written that it's unlocked. He meant provider lock of course.
@matusala Happy days mate, have fun and remember the first rule of pixel club 'Never re lock the bootloader'

Good luck @matusala from me also, and don't give in the first "Don't keep bootloader unlocked' alert screen!! Otherwise you might fall into a bad luck "bricked pixel" like me!
@junglism93 @maverick6664
Thanks guys. Of course i won't re lock it. I had many nexus phones and i always had them in unlocked state. I was disappointed in google when i heard this issue about pixel phones. Nexus phones (Except nexus 5x and 6p) were immortal. This pixels are so easy to brick and kill. I immedeatly started searching for ways to unlock it's bootloader. What if something goes wrong during update process? Anything can happen and if system gets damaged, you are screwed. It's always better to have bootloader in unlocked state.
P.S.
To check if pixel is verizon version
Download terminal emulator and run
getprop ro.boot.cid
if result is "VZW__001" then it's verizon. My pixel is verizon.

Nice to hear that. It was a good lesson to me. I have two xperia's (after google pixel dies, I bought one.) Somehow xperia's are not re-lockable. It is also mentioned in Sony Xperia forum. I guess it must be a warning from Sony.

But reading this page, relocking by "adb oem lock" looks safe. At least this is a google's page. Google is responsible for it. And you can avoid the annoying boot message.
BTW, "adb oem lock" doesn't work with xperia. Sony seems to like leaving their products unlocked.

I'm sure that is safe if you're updating from full stock to full stock, with mods on board a relock is almost suicidal and the threads about bricked pixels back that up.
If you don't like the warning screen, do what I do, don't watch your phone reboot

Can anyone confirm this Verizon bootloader unlock works?

According to this thread( https://slickdeals.net/f/14948867-google-pixel-3-phone-64-gb-pink-169-99?page=16#commentsBox ), one could unlock the bootloader of a Verizon 3 with the following method. I have already installed this month's update, so I cannot test it for now. If you have a Verizon Pixel 3 and have not installed this month's update, can you test this?
"
remove sim (!!!) if you ran it before with the sim inside - remove sim and do factory reset TWICE
connect to wifi
let it download the update
DONT INSTALL UPDATE
go to About Phone -> Build Version. Click it 10 times until it tells you're the Developer now
go to Developer menu
wait until the OEM unlock option becomes clickable (happens after system update is downloaded, but NOT installed)
toggle OEM unlock (result: should be enabled)
Enable USB debug on the phone (also Developer menu)
connect the device to your win/mac/linux machine with adb installed with USB cable with data pins. Phone will ask if you authorize your PC to USB debug it
from your PC run : "adb reboot bootloader". That will reboot your phone to bootloader with message and status "locked"
from your PC while your phone is in fastboot mode: "fastboot flashing unlock" (that should respond with
OKAY [ 0.356s]
Finished. Total time: 0.368s)
You're good now. It's bootloader unlocked. you can install any updates. It will not lock itself and can install any other 3rd party firmware (on your risk, sure)"

According to this thread, you have to do it when initially setting up the phone, before connecting to Verizon.

That means that only never-used Verizon Pixel3 can be bootloader-unlocked using that method, and used Verizon Pixel3 phones has no chance of unlocking the bootloader, is that right?

It shouldn't hurt to try, but if it is a Verizon phone it is unlikely to work.

I have given up. I will wait until the official software support from Google ends (later this year). End of support means that whatever exploit will be found will not be patched by Google, so if people could find a way to unlock the bootloader using some security vulnerabilities, the method will reliably work from that point on for ever.
