Need to upgrade but have questions - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

Hi guys. I rooted my phone after purchase about two years ago using https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/how-to/guide-how-to-root-mate-9-decrypt-data-t3569986
I am still running the same version now
Twrp
Model: MHA-L29
Build: MHA-L29C567B183
EMUI: 5.0
Android Version: 7.0
Any one got suggestions and steps to get to a newer version. I think I need to switch back to Erecovery etc but if someone had some exact steps and a good version to move to would be great. I had thought about installing magisk but my main concern is being able to run games like Pokemon go or Mario kart and they seem to be detecting my root. Not even sure having root is worth it anymore.

I installed stock recovery and did ota updates.. working like a champ!

Did you really flash TWRP to eRecovery? It is possible but people usually (specially if not installing Magisk on EMUI 9) flash TWRP to (EMUI) Recovery - which is not the same as eRecovery
So, do two tests:
- switch off
a) disconnect any USB
- press and keep pressing Vol+
- boot by Pow
In test b), do the same but with the phone connected to charger.
If it boots to TWRP in case a), then you flashed TWRP (as usual) to EMUI Recovery.
But if it boots to TWRP in case b), then you really flashed TWRP to eRecovery
If you have stock eRecovery, then in case b), once booted to eRecovery, do not accept Install latest or Factory reset, just Reboot or Shutdown
---
If you rooted by SuperSU, find an option like Full Unroot, or google for and find a zip for TWRP for unrooting - do unroot
Maybe, there are similar options for unrooting from phhSuperUser
Do not accept any OTA yet - if it comes
---
Install Firmware Finder app (from Playstore or from its thread on XDA).
Open, it will show firmwares for your MHA-L29C567
Scroll to the bottom to find your b183. Must be FullOTA-MF or FullOTA-MF-PV (2017.03.22)
Download its update.zip file, copy to PC, unzip to get update.apk - open it by Huawei Firmware Extractor (find its thread on XDA, read how to use it)
Extract Recovery.img (if you need to restore stock Ramdisk) or Recovery2.img (if you really need to restore stock eRecovery)
Extract also Boot.img
Flash Boot.img to Boot and Recovery.img to Recovery (if restoring Recovery), from TWRP or from Fastboot (similarly as you flashed TWRP from Fastboot back then)
Or, flash Boot.img to Boot and Recovery2.img to eRecovery, if you need to restore eRecovery
Now you should have stock Recovery and stock eRecovery - both tests a) and b) must not boot to TWRP
Also, you should have stock Boot - boot to system, check with RootChecker - there must be no more root
----
Have a proper SIM card and WiFi connection, go to Settings, System, Update, go to its menu and take the option to get Full OTA package
If it doesn't give you OTA update, boot to eRecovery (option b) as above, phone connected to the charger) and take Install latest firmware and recovery. Follow by Factory reset, only then boot to system
If eRecovery also fails to update from b183, you can try to update by HiSuite - it has also an option to choose installing a firmware
---
If it still fails to update, you can download by Firmware Finder b190 FullOTA-MF-PV (2017.10.31)
Download both zip files, do not unzip, copy them as downloaded to DLOAD folder on SD card (not Internal memory)
Switch off, press and keep pressing both Vol+ and Vol-, then boot by Pow
It should update to b190, and hopefully you will start receiving OTA updates for Oreo and Pie (must have SIM card)
If not - to be cont.

I might as well post this here -> -> How to: Root and repair data on the FRD-L04 - B320

Will android pay stop working even if I use the official beta 7.0?
Thanks man, but is there any successful way to flash B324 so far?
Is Wi-Fi calling enabled in this beta?
Managed to do the same using Charles app (see https://forum.xda-developers.com/ho...-to-nougat-t3510275/post69885525#post69885525) without any unlocking and flashing.
I have the FRD-L04B567 phone. I installed the TWRP for the Honor 8. I have installed a different ROM (CM13.1 ROM) successfully. I followed your instructions to the "T" in post #1 . The install of update.zip stopped at /cust with an error. I tried wiping and rebooting but am stuck in the "honor" bootup screen. Unable to force back into TWRP or fastboot or ADB at this time. Still picking up the pieces....
UPDATE: I forced phone into Huawei eRecovery screen and selected factory reset/wipe That got Nougat running but there is no keyboard and Google will only allow voice for any input. Since my wifi is encrypted, I cant give Nougat a password to get on the internet. I am creating a temporary unencrypted network to see if I can get further.
UPDATE: TWRP was wiped so I will reinstall. Then I will try update the regional update (second update mentioned)
UPDATE: Reflashed TWRP 3.0.2.0 for Honor 8, I can get into the bootloader but not recovery, eRecovery works but...(worthless). I cant flash the second update.zip because I cant get TWRP started. Obviously 3.0.2.0 is not compatible with Nougat, I may try 3.0.3.0? why not...
UPDATE - Flashing TWRP 3.0.3.0 was dumb. Now ADB sees the device (good) but I can not get to bootloader or recovery. TWRP flashes (displays) once a second and will not start (bad) . Hopefully someone can learn from my quest.
So, can someone help me proceed from a state where ADB sees the device? thanks Maybe extract update.zip?

Thanks for the reply, I finally got TWRP 3.0.2.0 for Honor 8 flashed (but now it won't work), I believe Nougat and TWRP aren't compatible. Huawei Hisuite said that phone was fine and recovery not necessary??? I disagree. I think I will have to wait for TWRP that is Nougat compatible with FRD-L04

If you want to get back to any working state, i recovered from 7.0 unbootable to vanilla 6.0 like so (for frd-l09, but probably still applies):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/how-to/honor-8-bricked-t3521813/post70326674#post70326674
// edit, also for completeness, i then flashed twrp 3.0.2 (official) and installed the cm 7.1.1 from the other thread here. All working fine.
fuflo,
thank you for your reply, it helped me get my Honor 8 back up and running.... I am now running CM 14.1 and Nougat 7.1.1 on my FRD-L04
Cheers

Mate 8 Soft-brick - Any Advice?

Hi all:
I enjoyed KangVIP 386 for a couple of days and decided I wanted to fix the fingerprint sensor and i used the instructions below. Then, when I booted and tried to go back into TWRP to flash Kang VIP, my TWRP was read-only and it didn't read my internal storage. It was completely wiped and I couldn't flash the ROM. And the OS it booted into was some DL 380 version and nothing would open, no apps or chrome so it's not usable.
I tried Unbrick method via Italian knife, but it didn't work and now I can only get in the Your Device is Rebooting menu and it sticks there, or i can get into the eRecovery menu (download latest version and recovery) - but nothing works. Can't get into TWRP or boot.
Any tips?????
Thanks!
TRIED THIS ON l29 b386 kANG:
This build B386 finger print dont working? Please i flash yesterday un L29 and dont see option please help
1) Download the following:
https://basketbuild.com/filedl/devs?...e 8/boot.img
https://basketbuild.com/filedl/devs?...e 8/TWRP.img
https://basketbuild.com/filedl/devs?...208/update.zip
2) Boot into recovery and flash update.zip BUT DO NOT REBOOT
3) Afterwards back out of the install completed screen and switch TWRP to flash images in the bottom right
4) Flash boot.img to the Boot partition and TWRP.img to the Recovery partition
5) Reboot. Can take some time to finish booting, that's normal.
6) Boot back into TWRP and flash the ROM.
OK, I think I had the wrong TWRP image in the Unbrick folder for the Italian Knife unbrick function. I copied the TWRP 4.1 in there, re-did Italian Knife unbrick, then was able to get into TWRP and flashed Kang VIP. I am back in business. AND I have fingerprint working!
Man, this phone is NEUROTIC!! I'm not modding this anymore! This will be a #2 device and then I'll pick up a Pixel or something else to upgrade from my Nexus 6.

[guide] how to root zenfone 3 official oreo firmware

HERE IS A STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO ROOT ZENFONE 3 FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE UNLOCKED THEIR BOOTLOADER AND ROOTED THEIR NOUGAT ROM PREVIOUSLY.
-first of you need to update your firmware to oreo.
-if you have unlocked your phone bootloader and/or rooted, you need to download and flash the latest nougat firmware through stock recovery which is 'WW-14.2020.1712.85' here https://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-3-ZE552KL/HelpDesk_BIOS/
-after you finished flashing the latest nougat firmware, boot your phone as usual. and then download the official oreo firmware which is 'WW-15.0410.1712.31 here https://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-3-ZE552KL/HelpDesk_BIOS/
-then put that 'WW-15.0410.1712.31' firmware to your SD card
-your phone will automatically detect an oreo firmware is available to be flashed that are located on your SD card then click on update
-then your phone will go to the updating/flashing process took around 5-10 minutes. after you're done your phone are now using the official stock firmware.
-then to proceed to root your oreo firmware, you need to flash a TWRP recovery. you can download twrp recovery here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1KYX8G6wgOa_X7uJfIar7ENuk2Q1nQyWB
-choose the right model for your phone either ZE520KL(5.0inch) or ZE552KL(5.5inch)
-rename the twrp recovery you just downloaded to "oreo_twrp_recovery.img"
-then put your phone to 'fastboot' mode and connect usb to laptop/pc
-put the twrp recovery that you just downloaded inside the 'Kit Root Zenfone 3' on your laptop/pc
-press shift and right click then click on 'Open command window here'
-then on cmd, type "fastboot flash recovery oreo_twrp_recovery.img" and click enter
-it will tell you flashing is finished
-then click on cmd type 'fastboot reboot' and click enter
-then your phone are now using TWRP recovery instead of the stock recovery
-next, go to magisk manager . com (no space)
-download the magisk manager apk version 5.5.5 [2.4mb]
-download magisk v15 [5.81mb] zip file
-boot your phone and install the magisk manager apk like normal
-then put the magisk v15 zip file to your SD card
-then boot your phone to TWRP recovery and flash the magisk v15 zip file
-after done, reboot system from twrp recovery
-open the magisk manager app and you're ROOTED!
done. your welcome.
[MY REVIEW OF THE OFFICIAL OREO FIRMWARE AFTER ALMOST A WEEK OF USE]
-oreo battery life sucks compare to stock nougat rom
-i can notice the battery drain faster than when im on nougat
-system performance, for me 5-10% faster than on nougat, especially the in settings or swiping the notification panel, other than its the same
-gaming performance are 10-15% worse than on nougat. when i play a game called 'Dokdo', moving the ship around the ocean are smoother when im on nougat and the framerate are stable, but when i play the game on oreo, the framerate are lower and i can feel the difference when im playing on nougat and oreo. the game feels more smoother when im on nougat compare to oreo. other games performance also noticeable when i play 'Rules of Survival', i can feel the framerate are slightly smoother on nougat compare to oreo
-there's no bugs that i found so far
[MY FINAL REVIEW OF ZENFONE 3 OFFICIAL OREO FIRMWARE]
-oreo battery life is real ****, i dont even have many apps installed and the battery life is already ****
-i prefer the nougat firmware compare to oreo.
-the only thing that i like about oreo is the quick settings icon are changed, it looks cleaner and smaller compare to nougat the quick settings icons are bigger and doesn't look good
-everyday i check on https://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-3-ZE552KL/HelpDesk_BIOS/ hoping there's a new oreo firmware update saying 'battery life improved' or something thats all i want
*14 february guide updates*
incase you guys hasn't already know, there's a second(current latest) oreo updates from asus, the firmware is called 'Version WW-15.0410.1801.40'.
if you are on rooted oreo firmware 'Version WW-15.0410.1712.31' and you want to update to the latest oreo version and root it again. follow this steps below:
*NOTE: you can't proceed to flash the stock firmware if you're phone are rooted so you need to unroot or remove magisk root first before flashing the oreo firmware otherwise the flashing process will fail or a possible of bootloop will occur, so follow the steps below carefully*
-first, you need to remove magisk root by downloading the magisk uninstaller zip file from the magisk manager . com (no space) or from their xda page
-then flash/install the magisk uninstaller zip file from TWRP recovery
-after you flashed the uninstaller, you're phone are now unrooted. then you can proceed to flash the 'Version WW-15.0410.1801.40' firmware.
-after you flashed the 'Version WW-15.0410.1801.40' firmware your TWRP recovery will be replaced back to asus stock recovery
-so you need to reinstall TWRP recovery as usual through fastboot
-reboot your phone as usual and as you know your phone root access is currently gone since you uninstalled magisk earlier
-to root your phone back, download and install the latest magisk manager from their site or xda site
-click on download zip file, and put that magisk zip file on your SD CARD
-boot to twrp recovery
-flash the magisk zip file that are located on your SD CARD
-reboot system
-now your latest 'Version WW-15.0410.1801.40' firmware are now rooted again.
YES I KNOW IT IS SUCH A HASSLE, BUT THIS IS WHAT YOU MUST GET THROUGH IF YOU WANT ROOT ACCESS. ANDROID IS NOT EASY.
By the way, don't go to magiskmanager<dot>com. It's not official.
Download Magisk from the official thread here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445

Careful with that site, as that's not an official distribution site for Magisk. There was a tweet from XDA regarding that site within the past few weeks. The only 100% trustworthy place to get it is from the official thread.
I'm getting better battery life on Oreo than I did on Nougat. I did do a factory reset after installing Oreo, though, so if you haven't done that it's worth a try.
You're right about the framerate issue with some games. Some that ran fine on Nougat get oddly choppy at times on Oreo. The last Oreo beta (although it had the same version number) was a heck of a lot worse than the release version, so hopefully the next update will help.
the reason why i put the magisk manager official site is because i rooted my phone by downloading both the magisk manager apk and the zip file and the app and the zip file from their official site works for rooting my phone so i think there is no harm. if you feel insecure you can just go to https://forum.xda-developers.com/app...mless-t3473445
Not working.
I exactly followed the steps but I could not install twrp. Stock recovery still keeps running.
However, If I use the previous version of twrp (20180203) phone cannot boot, then had to flash roms from M to O.
Edit: I tried over and over again and succeeded at last, but I do not know how exactly!

GUIDE UPDATES - 14 february
Hi !
So yesterday I tried flashing TWRP but no luck.
I'm on the latest firmware (1801), bootloader unlocked, stock recovery with no root.
When I try to flash TWRP with fastboot, I get no error message but I still have the stock recovery instead of TWRP.
I tried multiple times and downloaded the file again but it doesn't work.
Any idea ?
aftee you flashed twrp through fastboot. type on "fastboot reboot" on cmd. then if your phone directs you to stock recovery instead of twrp. click on reboot system in your stock recovery. then it will brings you to twrp. i know its weird. but thats what happen to me too at first.
then if you finally got to twrp and you reboot system from twrp but your phone still brings you back to twrp recovery everytime or it stucks on asus logo (bootloop), dont panic, go to twrp and flash your stock oreo firmware that are located from ur sdcard from twrp, then when you reboot system from twrp, then your phone will boot to normal. dont worry it wont erase data.
try this. it works for me.

I've been looking for how to unlock zen 3 oroe. but i did not find it. please help me. i want to root my phone.
Here is the official unlock method.
You will not be able to get OTA updates then, but zenfone3 may not get any upgrade anyway.
I found the solution to my problem (couldn't boot into twrp after flashing it)
1-After flashing twrp, do not fastboot reboot !
2-Unplug the device
3-Power it off (long press power key)
4-Power it on into recovery mod (long press power key + low volume key)
You should end up in twrp recovery or on a screen suggesting to boot into recovery which you do
5-A message will appear asking to allow modification of twrp recovery. Swipe to allow.
6-Done !

After updating on 15.0410.1801.40, i flash TWRP through fastboot, and i get stuck in bootloop on Asus logo. I go back in TWRP,flash the 15.0410.1801.40 zip, and i remain in bootloop.
With a custom recovery, we didn't need any No Verity File Encrypt like root in Nougat? (On nougat I root my ZE552KL by following this process: https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-3/how-to/twrp-recovery-3-0-2-root-zenfone-3-t3569926)

if you got bootloop after trying to reboot ur phone from twrp after flashing twrp. flashing the stock oreo rom from twrp again will make your phone boot. thats how i did it. im not sure why it doesn't work for you.
we still need "no verity..." message in oreo. that no verity message appears are actually caused by your phone bootloader unlocked not because of your phone rooted.

Unbricking Mate 9 and go stock(Soft Bricked)

I know, i know there's plenty of resources over the net already and I already spent 10+ hrs on this.
I bricked my phone when SuperSU prompts me to install su binary. And it got me into bootloop.
Tried https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/how-to/guide-mate-9-flash-update-package-t3593108 but failed at 61%
Tried the backup oem file method but TWRP kept saying permission denied when trying to backup
Couldn't find a way to import dload+Update.app file into internal storage without actually booting up the phone first. I didn't knew the exact directory for internal storage so I couldn't copy it from OTG
Bootloader Unlocked, Rooted(before recovery), using TWRP.
I wanna go back to clean stock firmware
Any helps would be appreciated.
ADDED: ITS ORIGINALLY OREO
Any luck? I have the same problem here ..
Still have unlocked bootloader & know the firmware version you were on?
Right. Go to Firmware Finder. Download the FullOTA version of it.
Get one of the firmware extractor utilities. You're going to want SYSTEM, KERNEL, RAMDISK, and RECOVERY_RAMDISK (or RECOVERY_RAMDIS, depending on the extractor).
Get into fastboot mode.
Flash those 4 items to the partitions named the same.
Reboot into recovery - you're now in an EMUI recovery. Factory reset.
Reboot.
You should be back to stock with an unlocked bootloader. If you've gone poking around with root or whatnot and might have modified one of the other partitions, don't relock your device - it won't boot. Instead, hwota8 or a NoCheck stock recovery are probably the way you'd want to go. (To be honest, I haven't used either. If I want to get back to full stock knowing it's not modified, I usually do a downgrade flash to Nougat through HiSuite and then upgrade again.)

Reboot.

Try this one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-9/development/tool-flash-official-firmware-recovery-t3769279
And use this TWRP with it (won't work otherwise, most likely): https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/development/recovery-twrp-3-2-1-0-t3783353
(Also, that TWRP has decryption support so you can backup /data.)
Search and download your fw from http://pro-teammt.ru/firmware-database/
You'll want Update.zip, update_data_full_public.zip and the hw data zip. (Make sure it's actually for your phone, e.g. check region cust)
Rename update_data_full_public.zip to update_data_public.zip, rename hw data zip to update_all_hw.zip.
Put update zips and HuRupdater zip in the same folder on your sdcard/internal memory, flash HuRupdater with TWRP.
i have a question, im on mha l29 dual sim version with stock oreo magisk and twrp (368 update) how can i revert back to clean oreo? so i can get the updates normally. thanks !!

that recovery wont work for me, only work twrp from pretoriano80 3.2.1-0, i got a mate 9 MHA-L29 dual sim...
edit:
well aparently theres 2, i dont get it, but when the recovery boot and show the logo of pretoriano, that version doesnt works, but when boot and show the classic twrp logo with pretoriano80 letters in red works...
so, if you flash recovery with fastboot and reboot recovery for the first time doesnt works, but if you reboot in recovery from twrp will show another version ...???? and works. sorry for my english

That is weird, considering that he only made one TWRP for Mate 9

Stuck in Bootloop! fastboot OK, can't load recovery (Failed flashes?)

Please Help- device stuck in bnoot
Current status:
Stuck in bootloop
Fastboot loads ok, can supposedly flash recovery_ramdisk & system
TWRP doesn't load after flashing recovery (or recovery_ramdisk with EMUI version) - I get "load failed" error screen
EMUI8 was probably not completely installed
Initial condition
Honor 6X w/ stock EMUI 5.1 (Nougat)
Traceback
Goal was to install LineageOS 15.01.
This is what I tried:
Unlocked bootloader (&wiped device)
EMUI8 was a pre-requisite, so followed this guide to upgrade
Ran script in guide, which loaded twrp followed by EMUI update screen (as expected)
EMUI update ran for a while, restarted (I think) at least once, but then showed failure screen
Tried rebooting- no system, stock recovery. (fastboot still loaded fine)
Couldn't install TWRP or use script anymore - after some research looked like this was because boot directories changed in Android 8 (recovery -> recovery_ramdisk)
Was able to install EMUI8 version of TWRP, but unable to flash rom or rerun update script (it used recovery2 partition, apparently changed to erecovery_ramdisk, which I couldn't flash to)
loading TWRP was unreliable, worked sometimes and didn't other times
Somewhere around here it seems like I deleted stock recovery (erecovery) while trying various workarounds
Tried installing ElementalOS
The included TWRP loaded, ROM Installation seemed to work but got error in the end (don't remember details)
rebooted device - can no longer boot to recovery ( Error screen: "Func no: 11 (recovery image) Error no: 2 (load failed!))
device stuck in bootloop and Flashing recovery_ramdisk/recovery has no effect!
can still enter fastboot without any problems
I'm hoping there's some way to recover to fix the recovery/system partitions so I can upgrade or at least revert to stock ROM!
Any help will be greatly appreciated

Well when bricked the first thing you should try to do is flash TWRP. Which isn't working now? Can you somehow re flash and boot into TWRP? What TWRP are you using. Please try this one and let me know if it boots.

Another thing you could try is Dload method. It requires an SD Card. Extract the Update.zip you downloaded on your PC and now create a Folder called Dload in your SD Card and copy the contents of the extracted zip into the folder. Put SD Card in phone and Hold all three buttons i.e. Power and Volume Up & Down at the same time. Firmware should start flashing. Once it finishes, while device is booting, press and Hold Power and Volume Up to boot into eRecovery and Perform a Wipe Data/Factory Reset. The Wipe Cache and reboot. If this works, then lemme know and then I'll help you flash a Custom ROM.

Thanks for the reply
Unfortunately TWRP doesnt boot (tried flashing the image you posted, same error screen- image below)
Dload method- I can't boot into erecovery atm- not sure if it's wiped or just can't be reached.
Also- the EMUI8 update I downloaded contained 3 zips- update.zip, update_all_hw.zip, and update_data_public.zip. do I only need the update.zip? (I can't boot into erecovery anyway, so it's a moot point until I do)

Ok the SW you downloaded is NOT a Dload rom, plus you do not enter eRecovery to flash it. Use the "force" method by pressing and holding all three buttons on power up.
Download a rom from here :-
https://androidhost.ru/
Also instructions are in the zip.

Tried downloading a rom from androidhost.ru- it had the update folder structure described,
and I put the unzipped dload folder into microSD root like the instructions said.
But pressing vol up+down+power doesn't load any update screen for me.
It just goes to bootloop again.
Is there anything else I can try?
Thanks
