[DEPRECATED] Actual Dev Situation (25/9/2019) - Motorola One Action Guides, News, & Discussion

Working root method here thanks to @ilia3367 and guided by me.
Old post:
Hello there!
So, you bought a Motorola One Action, that's cool! Exynos 9609, 4GB of RAM, 128GB UFS Storage, Hole Punch Display and Triple Camera, nice buy!
But...
You're looking for TWRP, Magisk, AOSP and other stuff. Let me tell you something, I've bad news for you, THERE'S NONE OF THEM
At this time, we have no custom recovery or root for our phones. I've only managed to unlock the bootloader using Motorola's Official Guide.
After that, I found the latest firmware on lolinet, I downloaded it, extracted boot.img and patched using Magisk.
Then I tried to boot that image but the device won't boot it because "validation failed", I also flashed it with the same error message.
I really don't know if we'll have TWRP or Magisk one day. The users at Motorola One Vision forums are in the same situation as us (it's almost the same phone with another camera configuration)
My advice? If you're looking to buy this phone (and customize it), wait a few months so you'll know if there's any development available.
Anyways, it's a really good phone (the battery life could be better) but not rootable yet.
Greetings,
Charly.

Root method may have been found. Still waiting for the guide to try on my Moto one vision.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/one-vision/how-to/root-moto-1-vision-t3973681

Thanks for the update @tys0n, I asked the OP if I can flash that files (except boot.img) on my One Action

It doesn't work. Bootloader still gives <validation image fail> error using that method.

Did you flashed vbmeta successfully?
How can vbmeta be patched?

I rooted my Motorola One Action. Thanks to @ilia3367 and @sfoot13. I've modified a little the guide but I'm now rooted. I'll be uploading the steps I followed in a few hours.

Lenovo s5 (k520) ZUI 3.7.177 ST Got root anyone?

Just got a new Lenovo s5 (k520 running ZUI 3.7.177 ST) but can't root it (tried KingRoot and Root Genius so far).
It has a nasty little OS (ZUI 3.7) which keeps killing apps it doesn't like. It took me two days to find an adblocker which would work (AdClear) after trying Dns66, Blokada and a couple of others which I can't recall. It's tightly locked down.
* Anyway, my question is... Has anyone had any luck with rooting this phone or OS?
* Or, has anyone any suggestions for apps or rooting options which might be more successful?
If there's any other people out there with this phone, I would seriously consider chipping in to buy one for a dev to work with... give me a yell if you're interested.
Cheers,
Specs:
OS ZUI 3.7 (based on Android O)
CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 2.0GHz Octa core
ROM 64GB
RAM 4GB
Edit: Hmmm, I was hoping that the latest Magisk beta (16.6) might help, but no luck. It does seem to get further along but fails with an 'unable to find boot image' message (my apologies for not being able to quote that accurately). Nothing seems able to find that .img. Can't back it up either as no app can find it. Yes, I need to brush up my adb skills ...my last effort ended in an error reporting lack of appropriate key, as I recall (sorry, have a bit of a flu just now). Anyway, has anyone else been able to look at this phone? Anyone have any ideas (or just thoughts) about what I can do here?
Thanks.
Just to update.... I have tried every simple rooting option I can find -with no luck.
I have found one reference to installing twrp & rooting this phone, but I'm unsure how legit it is ...it just looks a little like its put together by a script; but maybe they just copy/paste a lot when writing tutes? (I have written to them but have had no response from them in a week). The tutorial makes reference to a dev/group in China successfully installing twrp, but only on a Chinese release, not international.
Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone knows of the group or people referenced at
http://tutoraplikasi.com/cara-root-lenovo-s5/
or if anyone might have an idea of the dev(s) in China working on twrp & lenovo?
Just a shot in the dark, really, but I thought I'd ask anyway.
Cheers.
OK, looks like time for some more serious reading and brushing up of old, much neglected skilz... I will probably close this thread and open another ( if there's no objections) in the xda twrp forum.
If anyone is interested, I'm looking to compile twrp for this device with a view to flashing magisk. Hopefully, it will work. Seems that adb & unlocking the bootloader is the only way I'm going to get to actually see the partitions holding the IMG files etc. (Though I do have one or two ideas about escalating privileges/permissions, but that's a whole other bunch of research -and time which is always short.)
Anyway, if you have an interest in rooting this phone have a look for a thread under twrp Q&A.
Cheers.
Seems like it was just a matter of waiting... XN Logos has come up with a solution, it appears --
https://www.stupdroid.com/2018/07/root-twrp-lenovo-k520.html?m=1
At least I managed some in depth reading in the meantime. I'll report back on success of the procedure.
Hi I have also a Lenovo s5. I hated zui 3.7 too and I succeded in installing Lineage OS 15.1 by phh using only fastboot mode... I tried rooting It but unsuccessfully. Now I want twrp and if it would be possible even root. Did you succeed with XN Logos?

Haven't actually tried yet. After all that looking for a root solution I now have been too busy. Will probably do it this Wednesday. I'll keep you posted. Did lineage work well? Any bugs or other issues? ZUI is a dog.
Yeah everything is okay... In the previous updates there was a problem with the audio in ear but now is solved. The only thing that is a little (but not dramatically) worse is battery life because in zui the fact that the os kills every app in background makes the battery last longer.
Hey guys, I know it is no the perfect thread for this yet this phone almost doesn't exist anywhere on the internet. I have the same issue with apps closing as you do. I wanted to install Lineage OS yet as there is no official release for lenovo S5. I would really appreciate some guidance on which release would I install and how. Would it be via the twrp? Thanks in advance.

Hello, I'm a lucky owner of this beautifull beast, the Lenovo S5 K520, but with the horfull ZUI3.7. I always have been using Cyanogen and after lineage OS.
It did not luck for me to install it on the Lenovo S5.
I manage to install TWRP-3.2.2-0713 with the help of the S-Droid toolkit for Lenovo S5.
From there, I did try every rom from phh on this page : https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble/trebleenabled-device-development/lineage-phh-treble-t3767690
but the best I did get is the first logo of lineage OS going on and never stop for hours. I also did try AOSP treble Rom from this site : https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble/trebleenabled-device-development/experimental-phh-treble-t3709659, but there I'm getting the Android text changing of ligth theme, but bothing more.
Could you please tell us the procedure and the version of the software you are using so that you are able to use Lineage OS on a Lenovo S5 K520?
Thanks a lot.

Hi i did in this way...
1)fastboot -w
2)fastboot erase modemst1
3)fastboot erase modemst2
4) fastboot erase system
5) fastboot erase boot
6) fastboot erase recovery
7) fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
8) fastboot flash boot boot.img
9) fastboot flash system {systemname}.img
The only thing you should do firstly is download the firmware from a video in YouTube whose name is like "ROM Lenovo s5" or something like that and extract the firmware in order to have both boot.img and recovery.img. Hope I could help
P.s. I used phh lineage latest build

Hi everybody!
I was wondering if any of you have a copy of the original ZUI 3.7 non-Chinese stock firmware. I had trouble with my phone and contacted the customer service. Unfortunately, they've sent me the Chinese version (K520_CN_OPEN_USER_Q00011.0_O_ZUI_3.7.355_ST_180412_qpst) and now my phone is almost unusable as the rom only contains crappy Chinese stuff... :crying:
All apps are Chinese and it contains no GApps... I cannot even restore previously save config.
Please help me and send me a backup or the original non-Chinese firmware.
Thank you very much
I didn't even know the existence of an original firmware for non Chinese phones indeed when I bought it it came with a horrible chinese firmware with few translations. Did you find it? Because I want to try it too. If you didn't find it I'm also going to look for it

Completely messed up rooting my S7 Edge with a custom ROM

So, I wanted to root my device in order to modify games, but haven't ever encountered Custom URL's before, so I decided to watch a YouTube tutorial, not realising that it was several months out of date.
So, the tutorial took me to Odin, and a custom ROM, which I then *tried* to install. Damned thing wiped my device with a "Verification failed" message. So the next morning, I reset my device as I couldn't find a way around it, I then tried to install Majisk v16.0 using TWRP. Though this seemed way easier than installing the custom ROM, I have had a lot of trouble with the installation of the .zip file, due to my earlier failures with the custom ROM.
TWRP keeps giving me the error:
! Boot image patched by other programs!
! please restore stock boot image
Updater process ended with ERROR: 1
Error installing zip file ' /sdcard/Magisk-v16.0.zip '
Other XDA threads have pointed me in the direction of a stock boot.img file, but I cannot seem to find one for my device (Since most of the threads with this problem are over a year old, and many updates have occurred since then).
Anyway, I am looking for either a link to an updated boot image, or a possible solution to this problem.
Thanks in advance.

I kinda did the same thing with my S7 edge before. I believe you havent turned on OEM unlock so you got the error while flashing with Odin. Now i have installed GALAXY 8.0 rom on my s7. It comes rooted, with magisk, custom kernel. Everything you set up in aroma.
As for twrp part i used this https://forum.xda-developers.com/s7...overy-official-twrp-hero2lte-3-0-0-0-t3334084
After installing twrp, flash rom with it. Hope that helps.

This is the link I got myself a boot.img
Used it on 935F, also im not responsible if you mess up your device even more but it worked for me.
BTW its worth mentioning my s7e using exynos
Cheers for this, this seems way more logical than what I have been trying to do. I will try this now.
Thanks

I'm stuck trying to flash a GSI, I can't figure what I'm doing wrong

Hi!
I'd like to get rid of the HTC original firmware on my U12+.
I just tried to flash GSIs of LineageOS 17 by AndyYan then AOSP 10.0 by phhusson, without luck.
I have a factory unlocked HTC U12+ (fastboot mode showing Secure Boot : Development, Secure State : S-Off, Device State : Unlocked(U)) so I went straight to the "flash GSI without TWRP" part of the official XDA tutorial: I factory reset the phone, rebooted in bootloader, then erased system and successfully flashed lineage-17.0-20191117-UNOFFICIAL-treble_arm64_avN.img.
But after reboot, I got a bootloop.
I've wanted to try the TWRP method, but upon launch it asked my password for decryption. While I'm sure of the code I've used and typed, decryption doesn't work, so TWRP didn't help.
Then I've flashed the AOSP GSI via fastboot, but then I got a "This device is corrupt. It can't be trusted and will not boot" error message.
So as suggested on another thread I've used the SD card method to flash a RUU, specifically 2Q55IMG_IMAGINE_DUGL_O80_SENSE10GP_HTC_Europe_1.30.401.2_Radio_sdm845-000201b-1807311356_release_528103_signed_2_4.zip. It flashed successfully, but then it booted to the static white HTC logo on black background and stayed there for 20 min.
I can still boot to fastboot mode/download mode, but I don't know what to do.
I can't figure what I'm doing wrong, can you help me, please?
After another attempt I've managed to go back full stock using the microSD card method.
Then I've been able to boot TWRP, which first showed a "Mount" "Decrypt data" screen, asking for a password. The 6 digits code I've used previously doesn't work. So TWRP "failed to decrypt data", also was "unable to mount storage" and "failed to unmount /system_root (device or resource busy)". As suggested, I formatted/wiped data to remove encryption.
Then I performed a factory reset, adb pushed system-quack-arm64-ab-vanilla.img to /data, then flashed it successfully to the system partition, as requested in the afore mentioned official tutorial. On reboot I get another bootloop. Bootscreens shows the HTC and Powered by Android wordmarks and also "** ORANGE **" on the top left corner of the screen.
What am I missing?! :-/
After first boot of flashed RUU at the HTC logo reboot the device. Got there myself, rebooted(using power button) and the OS booted up perfectly.
TWRP doesn't decrypt latest Pie with July Patch. So you will not decrypt it. (Wiping does not decrypt).
I used temporary TWRP, flashed permanent (with touchscreen patch), installed Magisk, Rooted, installed LeeDroid from Magisk for example.
Make sure you have a correct RUU for your CID version.
I am not sure how a project treble ROM will work on this device. You still need signed HTC drivers. I don't think we are ready now for 10 on this device for daily use. HTC did quite awful with the Pie update and many bugs are still not fixed after 6 months.
GSI tutorials advise against rooting before flashing. They advise to keep the phone full stock. What do you think about this?
I was unable to determine CID and MID yesterday from fastboot mode or TWRP, so I've downloaded the latest RUU for dual SIM and EMEA model, as my U12+ is dual SIM and I live in Europe.
Now that the phone is back to full stock, I just installed a terminal app right on the phone and executed the following:
getprop ro.cid : 11111111
getprop ro.boot.mid : empty
I understand that the phone is "SuperCID", but I don't really understand what that implies.
Regarding Treble, Treble Info by Hackintosh Five reports (translated from French by me): "Your device supports the old Project Treble version, using VNDK version 26.0."
But the U12+ is listed as supported on phhusson's wiki. A few issues are listed, but I'm fine with them.
I've read a tutorial that asks to "extract the GSI and vendor+boot zips", but then doesn't what to do with the vendor+boot zips. Do you know?
Lastly, do you know what the **GREEN** or **ORANGE** overlay means on the boot screen?
Thank you for your help!

SuperCID implies you can install any RUU (not specific CID). So you can "transform" your US version into european or asian... for a specific reason. No need to do that. Usually there was a specific base that was needed to install a custom ROM or Custom Recovery or people just wanted a different version because they lived in a different part of the world from where the phone was purposed.
I am guessing the **GREEN*** overlay has smth to do with the RUU (if it's embedded in the Boot animation zip (basically pictures+ sound)) or has smth to do with the nature of your tempering (S-OFF/SuperCid etc.)
with this device and serves as a warning for users/devs/internal testing.
You should find your answers on a different section. More active. I see no activity here. And it's HTC's fault for dying" on us. I myself bought the U12 just to own (probably) the last flaghsip device they make. Here's to the comeback.... but I am not sure it will be real. HTC was one of the fastest to update, for example.. until 2019. We are still with bugs and on the July patch. Right not, in reality I am just hoping for one last Pie update to fix bugs and that's it. Will give this device a 1 year run and buy something better.
So go to the Android general section where you can ask how can you compile your ROM on this device. They should help. I can not offer sufficient knowhow on this topic.
Thank you for these clarifications
The **GREEN** or **ORANGE** overlay is shown for a few seconds on the vendor logo, before boot animation. It wasn't showing before I started messing with firmwares, but nevermind
Yes unfortunately HTC is kind of dead on the smartphone front. They deserved it at the end, U12 Plus' firmware is badly translated and full of bloatware. I've been a long fan, I've had four Orange branded Windows Mobile phones and PDA phones from 2002 (17 years ago!) to 2007, then a few Android smartphones (HTC Desire <3), so I think it's sad.
Anyway I've been able to flash AOSP 10.0 GSI by phhusson with his help.
So I've just shared a quick tutorial:

Interesting. Will look into your tutorial. So thank you. If the boot animation.zip was modified you will find in in root/system/[search for it] -you can lookup up each image that forms the animation to check. I myself modified the ZIP to not include the annoying audio, so i deleted it. )
So is the GSI good for daily use? I would mess around with it until i sell my HTC U11. Still using the U11 as a daily driver for the past 2 weeks. And by selling it i mean practically giving a perfectly good phone away for scrap... because it's old.

That's clever! The HTC boot sound was annoying when I had trouble booting the bootloader, because of the tactile buttons.

At this point I have a big problem with AOSP 10.0: brightness is blocked at 100%. There's a workaround involving adb, but for some reason adb isn't working with this firmware, even though I've activated developer options and USB debugging. I haven't had the time to tinker yet, I'll give it a try asap and I'll report back!

Did Bluetooth work for you on AOSP? Tried to install a few GSIs over the last couple of days but I cannot get Bluetooth working for calls or media. Apparently it's a known issue but none of the fixes I can find here on the forums seem to work for me. Just wondered what your experience was on another U12. I even tried your guide but still no Bluetooth for me.
Useful post about the GREEN message.

Rooting with Magisk?

So... I unlocked the bootloader, but I haven't found a way to get root yet. There's no TWRP available, and I can't find a useable boot image. I tried to copy boot_a and boot_b using dd in an ADB shell, but all I got was "permission denied". There don't seem to be any stock images available, so I'm not sure where to get a boot image until there's an OTA update, but even then I might not be able to pull it from the data partition without root. Argh.
Also, Motorola has kernel source at https://github.com/MotorolaMobilityLLC/kernel-msm, but the last commit was over 2 months ago, and I can't find a default config for racer.

Firmware for device
Thanks for that. I also found Lenovo's support app at https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds101291 (Lenovo owns Motorola.) Too tired to mess with this now. I'll try it later.
You can retrieve full ROM and boot.img from LMSA using rescue mode.
You can run rescue to update the ROM, observe the download process, copy the .zip once it reached 100% as well as retrieve boot
Copy boot.img to phone and patch with Magisk Manager, and copy back to host computer
Flash the patched boot
Make sure ADB is up to date
adb reboot fastboot
fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img
Yup, it's working now. Thanks all.
I have successfully rooted mine and having adaway installed
Can you install stock android 10 or even android 11 now?
ROM updated
Since Motorola/Lenovo updated the Edge since this was first posted, I would like to add that coming across the boot image file is a bit more scarce than the original release version for the Edge. However, using Rescue and Smart Assistant, you can downoad the latest ROM version. You may now use the boot image file in the downloaded folder [ProgramData\Lenovo\Downloads\Roms] and use that for Magisk patching to attain root. However, since I am not sure how that EXACTLY works, I am worried about the resulting file size. Original file size is 101MB. Patched file size is 36MB. I am afraid to flash due to this. Another however, I use fastboot to boot the patched file directly and it DOES work, just unsure if there would be any problems with it if I FLASH it, instead. I believe I read in a related thread to Magisk and rooting, that it reduces the file size to remove unnecessary space now that it is patched? Can someone confirm how that works and if it is safe to flash? I really don't want to flash it, then come across a problem and have to flash stock boot image and end up running into some other problems all because I wanted to flash the patched file instead of using fastboot to boot every time I reboot. Thanks for any and all help, guys.

Yes, my patched boot image is smaller too, but it works. I'm guessing the patched image is either sparse or truncated.

That makes all the sense in the world to me. I flashed it and have been running it for a few days now without issue. Have my usual setup with Magisk, Riru-core, Riru EdXposed, and then GravityBox in EdXposed for the free customization. Only thing I couldn't get was Xblast module. Not compatible at all with Android Q. Only thing I need now is make the nav bar black all the time. Can't do it with GB since it doesn't have an option for that. Xblast had one but... oh well. Phone works nice aside from the occasional app that isn't compatible with edge enable/disable.

WOW! You're a life savor, thank you!
I unlocked my bootloader through moto and downloaded the rom through lmsa and patched the boot img with magisk, then tried to flash it using adb but it put my phone into a boot loop.. can anyone help me out? this phone seems like a pain the ass to root* compared to the last one ive done (about 2 years ago)
edit: i think i found out what i did wrong, not renaming the patch file back to how it should be. and i patch the boot.img correct? or patch the recovery.img? getting conflicting guides
Make sure you flash boot.img in fastbootd
I'm curious of people's opinions of rooting this phone?
I just got mine yesterday, and I don't think I've ever not used rooted android all the way back to my first Android Eclair device over a decade ago now.
But here I find myself worried I'll have some of the display issues so I'm hesitant to root my device or request an unlock code while I'm in the 2 week return window because of the wording of the agreement once the code is used. It very explicitly absolves Moto of every possible responsibility for hardware faults under a blanket accusation that by unlocking the phone I must have broken it. And while I have no doubt the wording would crumple in court or whatever, I don't really want to go to court over a cell phone.
I rooted both my "send-ins". I am on my third and just going to accept the light green haze at low light. I rooted my first two and sent them in within a total of a month. First phone was on day 17. 2nd was about 6 or 7 days. That one was a turn around since it displayed the haze during setup. This third one shows it as well but I don't feel like doing the return and setup all over again. You shouldn't have to worry about the agreement since Lenovo/Motorola is not looking into that as this is a known hardware/software issue from factory.
Does this forum include the edge 5G? I have the US model(6/ram, 256GB). Does twrp still have that builder? There used to be something, to that, don't know if that's continued.

Sorry to be a little late, but I am unsure of your question. This forum IS "Motorola Edge 5G". There is a separate forum under the name of "Motorola Edge+ 5G" for the more expensive version. If you are looking for TWRP for this phone, there never was a release. At least none that I had ever seen around here. I was always on the lookout for one and never came across one. The "plus" version of the phone does have a TWRP, however. Maybe that is the phone you have or at least the one you are confusing the TWRP with?

AT&T LG V20 H91020l Flashable Stock Roms

Flash with TWRP, choose one or the other.
H91020i_rooted.zip
You probably want this one. It is stock with the following modifications:
engineering bootloader (aboot)
TWRP 3.5.2_9-0 (recovery)
mk2000 kernel, Magisk v23.0 patched (boot)
hidden bootloader warning (raw_resources)
H91020i_stock.zip
Lose root, revert to stock. After installing, shut the phone off and then do a factory reset.
Lol, thanks for the package. It works just like h91020h, only slightly newer, but i don't have to do the kernel, twrp, or the fixed boot graphic. I can just install this, and debloat.
Works great, installed it with latest TWRP on nougat firmware (initially rooted using dirtysanta)
twrp-3.6.1_9-0-h910.img
H91020i_rooted.zip
Auto_Debloat 2.1
mk2000 2.3 beta 1 kernel
Magisk-v24.3 - Rename .apk to .zip or not, worked both ways in TWRP
Loving it, flashing other mods now like gps, high imp., quad dac mod, etc...

Howdy!
Sorry to be asking, but I'm trying this after having been on LOS for ages since I need VoLTE access. After flashing this, I get no service of any sort. Keeps trying to connect, never actually connects. My IMEI is still correct, I've sent my old modem files through fastboot, I've flashed 910 Oreo modem images, no dice.
Any ideas as to what I'm missing in this process? 910 on AT&T, USA, thanks much for your time!

I really appreciate the super comprehensive reply, thanks so much! It was on the carrier's end, it was just a strange case of timing, a worsening of the AT&T nonsense that got me to switch back to Oreo in the first place.
Thank you!
I flashed the rooted zip from this thread after fallowing this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...irtysanta-most-variants-noobfriendly.3722278/ now the phone only boots the Fastboot. Oddly it even goes to fast mode when I try to enter TWRP it even still makes you choose yes twice like normal but instead of twrp I get fastboot.
Anyone care to point me in the right direction?
Something went wrong, you need to verify you can go into download mode and flash stock kdz and start from there....
[ROOT] HOWTO: AT&T H910 up to v20g (FULLY TESTED)
***WARNING*** This is ONLY for the H910. If you flash H915 firmware on an H918 -- you WILL brick it. If you are currently on Oreo, you can root your phone, but you CAN NOT keep Oreo - for now. This will downgrade you back to Nougat, which is...
forum.xda-developers.com
I formatted data/ and flashed H91020i_rooted.zip onto my H910 (rooted with DirtySanta and flashed to H91020h_Oreo_full_rooted.zip approximately 2.5 years ago). It appeared to work, but it looks like I lost root... whenever I try to do something that requires root, I get "Unfortunately, Magisk has stopped" as soon as the app tries to become root.
Any ideas what to try next?
so could this be used after the root procedure here https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/root-howto-at-t-h910-up-to-v20g-fully-tested.3664500/ ? Because the full stock 910r package used there is no longer available
