Verizon LTE service - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

I ordered this as an upgrade to OnePlus 6 so I can use Verizon, but their LTE service has been terrible. I have all bars available and LTE plus on but when I'm on internet or apps they are constantly locking up and just really really slow..is anyone having this issue? I feel like T mobile was better.

I don't have any issues even with a couple of bars.
What apps have you installed?
You might have a bad app.

It happens with any app I try to open. I'm wondering if I need to make a change with the hidden menu settings, for the numbers to type in dialer to get to it. Is there an optimal setting?

LTE usage on non-LTE areas

I'm thinking about buying the s2 skyrocket, and as I already know, LTE drains the battery very fast.
The problem is that I dont have LTE in my country and I was wondering whether or not the LTE will still drain the battery even when there
is no LTE reception, by constantly searching for LTE network?
Thanx in advance!

AT&T LTE phones don't have the option to switch to 3g or turn off LTE, so that simply won't work.

I'm guessing the phone is unlocked... If you can't get it to change manually by going into network selection and searching for networks manually, install a non at&t modem. (Rogers, Bell) than try again. If you are on stock touchwiz than you're SOL.

It should let you as long as you aren't on touchwiz. Just go to the network selector, choose your network from the list, and then set it to GSM/WCDMA preferred. Or check use 2G networks only if that's what floats your boat. I'm on AT&T using AOKP and it just worked for me.
EDIT: Almost forgot, you have to redo it every time you reboot your phone.

It has nothing to do with TouchWiz. It's the modem. Use a non AT&T modem and you will be able to switch to H+ on a TouchWiz rom.

So many scenarios on battery life.
Signal strength, Apps, Wakelocks, brightness the list goes on.
You will have to play with it and give and take for your liking.
The best I've gotten was 3 days some odd hours.
Its a great phone you will not be disappointed.

So I'll just ask it differently then - Does the battery last a whole day (from morning to night) on non-LTE areas (auto brightness always on)
when only doing light-moderate use (just phone calls, texting, light apps like calculator, camera, playing a little music/videos, no gaming, no wifi, no internet)
Thanks!

LTE radio will not turn on if network apn doesn't provide it ..
So if network doesn't provide LTE , phone will connect to H+ if available ... No extra battery drain (from LTE) in this scenario.. I had a similar situation when I was on Starighttalk , they don't provide LTE , my location is an LTE market if I was using an at&t sim
Although it's a great phone , but it is getting old nowadays .. You might think of the international S3 maybe or an S4 .. Just my 2 cents..
PS :Custom roms aren't magic by selecting network preferred setting , you can do it in touchwiz with *#*#4636#*#* in dialer , but you have to use a RAT unlocked modem like the Roger's ones...
Does anybody get bad call quality, Because I read on some reviews that the call quality on the skyrocket is not the best...

[Q] Any way to get WCDMA/LTE only mode?

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a "WCDMA/LTE Only" mode on the Nexus 5?
I basically want to stop the phone dropping to 2G. Recently LTE has been made available here and before that I used "WCDMA only" and it worked fine but that is no longer a viable option since I want to use LTE.
Thanks in advance

I do, but I can use 3G to do this. I mean I don't want it to drop to EDGE.
The reason is, in Ireland the network provider Three does not have a 2G network and roams to Vodafone when it 3G isn't available. It then will not automatically change back to 3G. You need to manually select the Three network again.
you have no option then. you have either lte only, which gets you data and no phone calls, or you have lte/gsm. on gsm/lte, itll switch to whatever is your best signal.
Wouldn't it be easier to choose the operator manually?

It still jumps to vodafone when there is poor signal, even when manually selected. If there was a way of forcing it to stay with one operator or disable roaming completely, then that would do but there doesn't seem to be an option.

When looking in SlimKat (admittedly not stock), it is @fergietime suggests, national data roaming and would still allow the phone to roam to another operator when there was no signal on the existing operator - just with no data. However, I am not seeing a problem with that. It only roams nationally when there is 0 signal for voice on your operator?

Yes, but it happens me quite often due to certain places that I pass through. My operator does not have a 2G network at all so roams once it drops below 3G. The main problem is, I need to manually search for networks and select my network to get it back to 3G/4G. It's a network issue that Three Ireland refuse to acknowledge. It has been happening for 4 years at least. I am just looking for a workaround.

I see.
I am also on Three (UK though) so also have no 2G coverage. and yes, when it fails over to 2G (Orange in UK) it is a pain to get it back.

It's a very frustrating issue. It actually NEVER jumps back to Three and it changes to Vodafone nearly every time I go inside a Tesco or somewhere like that. I then have to search and wait for it to find networks so I can select Three. The only time it seems to work correctly is when using a device bought from Three or a Three rom, which obviously for the Nexus 5 doesn't exist. And even then people complain about it so it's a bit hit and miss.
Does anyone know if it is possible to add a "WCDMA/LTE Only" mode into a rom?

Carrier Optimization and Aggregation

Did sprint install the Carrier Optimization on these Note 5s? Also was carrier aggregation turned ON for these phones. My says not setup or something like that.

Looks like there is something called a smart switch. that is about. Connections manager had this whole disclaimer. I dont see that anymore.

LTE speeds while using VoLTE

I am currently a T-Mobile customer, and my phone drops to 3g speeds during phone calls. Thing is, my Nexus 6 (and even the crappy TMo Revvl) don't lose any speeds, and still operate with full LATE service, while my fancy U11 slows down.
Does any other TMo customers experience the same thing?

Depends on the ROM. For some, it goes from LTE to H, LTE+ to LTE, or LTE to 4G. Either way, the icon always changes to reflect a slower data connection, and my speed tests have confirmed that this is not a cosmetic change.

Right, sounds like VoLTE is not working properly on your device. It should maintain LTE the whole time.
I don't recall doing anything specific other than making sure it was turned on in settings.

I noticed while messing with my wife's phone, when I go into that menu, and hit Device Info, by default her settings are DIFFERENT than mine. Whereas mine is TD-SCDMA/CDMA/UMTS, hers was set to just TD-SCDMA/UMTS. Is anyone else's different, straight from AT&T? I thought that was odd.

I have seen this as well, but I am not sure why thewy would be set differently and haven't been able to tell if one wokrs better than the other relative to connectivity or battery usage.
I usually leave mine set to LTE only. But since the Oreo update, coincidentally or not, I have seen BETTER service. Both roads to where I live are normally blackout zones. In my house, I normally have only 1 to 2 bars. Some the update, and a factory reset with no restoring of old settings, I've got 3 to 4 bars in my house and full service on one of the roads.

My old Note 4 had something along the lines of LTE/WCDMA/GSM there, or you could swap it to LTE/WCDMA-only, or WCDMA-preferred.
New Note 8 w/ Oreo has a variety of extra options that now include the Chinese-originating TD-SCDMA format.
Mine is currently set on "LTE/CDMA/UMTS auto (PRL)" and it seems to keep LTE much more than any other setting.
Generally any other setting that includes "UMTS" would drop me to some seriously degraded "4G" knock that wouldn't even give me a Mb up or down w/ full service...it was really weird, but it was showing data being on HSDPA, and voice was something else...UMTS, maybe? Either way, it was terrible lol
Not sure why the default for Oreo seems to be one that includes the Chinese format, but I think my service is better and more stable since changing it. YMMV, but that's what I'm seeing.
Also can't find anything one way or the other on why Oreo defaults to what it defaults to on our phones...I guess that's some sort of side effect from having something like 6 radios in our phone lol the band count on this phone is ridiculous (it's at least one of the highest, if not the highest, that I've seen released stateside.)
