TWRP can't mount data on Redmi 4a - General Questions and Answers

I recently flashed Pixel Experience ROM onto my Redmi 4a using TWRP recovery. Everything works fine, except for auto rotate (which no longer works thanks to missing persist file,) but now, Everytime I boot into TWRP it says 0MB by internal storage. When I navigate to 'mount' it shows that system and data aren't mounted. I have done the usual ex2 to ex4 partition repair, which works, but then when I reboot into twrp it is unmounted again. Is there any other way to fix this. Should I reflash TWRP or flash orange fox? Any idea's on how to solve this issue? Answers would be much appreciated.

[Q] CWM recovery and adb

Apologies if this is already answered somewhere or should have been common knowledge - I'm new to Android. I feel like I've read through all the appropriate threads but haven't found the answer.
I wanted to simply remove some of the stock apps from my G2X. I can't get adb connected while in CWM recovery. I've done the following:
- Installed android sdk
- Installed LG adb driver
- Rooted with SuperOneClick
- Installed Rom Manager from the market and "fake" flashed ClockworkMod Recovery
- Booted into CWM and made a nandroid backup
- Factory reset using stock recovery
- Restored nandroid backup using CWM - works fine
Now, I believe all I need to do is get adb connected in recovery mode, mount /system and delete any .apks I don't want; however, the adb device is not present when I boot to CWM recovery. adb works fine when booted normally. As a result, I obviously can't start adb shell. Oh, and I've tried this from XP 32bit and Win7 x64. What am I missing?
Did I need to flash CWM to the actual recovery area using NVflash for this to work? I'd rather not do this for warranty purposes (especially this soon) unless absolutely necessary. Incidentally, the other USB devices (virtual serial port, modem, and storage devices) do show up while in recovery - just not the adb device.
I'm open to other methods of stripping .apks. I don't yet know anything about modifying and repackaging a nandroid backup, if that's possible, or I would try that route.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
EDIT: I've resolved my particular issue by just remounting /system as rw while the phone is booted normally. This still doesn't answer the CWM adb question, but at least for now, I guess I don't need that.
I believe you can just use Root Explorer (or another type of file manager) to delete or freeze the apps that you do not want. Not sure if this belongs in development.
This will be moved soon enough, and you didn't search enough since i know there is threads talking about this. Do a search again. mod plz move this to the right area.
Maybe a freeze is one way to go, but obviously a cleaner way is remove the apps, which should be possible with this method and others.
I did search - a lot - in this forum and others. I found no one directly addressing adb not working in CWM on the G2X. I saw one poster here mention they had a similar issue, but only on XP and no one responded to that either. If you know of a thread with this information in it, please enlighten me.
Maybe this isn't the right forum to post in, but the question is directly about CWM flashed to a rooted G2X and access using adb...
I just use titanium backup's Chuck Norris Mode.

Root Explorer is your best friend, a simple delete is all you need, make sure you mount before entering system

Haha, plenty of answers, none of which answer your main concern. I too have been mystified by the lack of adb functionality while in recovery. I have come to the conclusion that it's simply not functional with this very early version of clockwork recovery for our phones and probably not a high priority for the devs at the moment as theres probably plenty of other issues deemed more urgent. Especially considering there are many work-arounds to solve this particular missing function. Hopefully I'm wrong though.

****** USE AT YOUR OWN RISK *******
This is NOT SUPPORTED SOFTWARE. This is purely for my amusement and entertainment. I'm making it available to download for those who might like to examine my work, but if you install it, you are on your own. I can't even test this myself. (I don't have a GT-P6200.)
Seriously - this has not been tested enough for me to be happy with it, and I'm unable to test it myself. Please read the thread for the GT-P6210 for instructions, known issues, warnings, etc.
If you do decide to install this anyway, please let me know how it works out for you. If no one is using it, I WILL NOT MAINTAIN IT AND WILL DROP IT.
If people do start using it, and the reports are that everything is working okay, then it'll get merged into what I'm already doing with the other two 7 plus models (meaning it'll get updated as needed when they do.)
Again, PLEASE READ the thread for the 6210 for everything you need to know: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379532

Hi, Placeholder. I'm a placeholder, too. Good meeting you here.
Pm'ed you. went straight in CWM, looks nice. able to make a full backup and md5. fails to restore in the middle of restoring /data
also getting UDIDs are inconsistent , fixing permission is supposed to take care of this.
and Im pretty much factory reset after reboot.
EDIT: appears as if Location cache map app by remy in market I had set to block wifi and cell caches. restoring a backup in CWM got permissions error, trestoring /data fails and Im left with pretty much a factory reset. went back to market and reinstalled suspicious app, installed and still says caches blocked removed app, rebooted, made back up and successful restore! woo hoo! Thank You Gary!
Note: should we make a note for 7+ CWM users beware blocked location caches, or re-write recovery to take care of this, and/or email the app dev?
anyways, pretty excited. Thanks so much Gary.
Anyone else want to help test the CWM Recovery for this tablet? (GT-P6200 only)
The current tester has had mixed results, but it _may_ have been the result of a third party app causing problems. I'd like to get someone else to test in addition to ensure there aren't any other issues.
In order to test, I need someone who has "adb" installed on their PC, is comfortable with linux commands, already knows how to use adb for commands such as "adb shell, adb push, and adb pull", doesn't mind using ODIN to restore their tablet to a factory state if it soft-bricks, and already knows how to use ODIN and CWM Recovery.
As a side-note; the third party app that MIGHT have been causing the problem is "Location Cache" by "remydemy." I don't use this app myself, but apparently it has some function to block the google/android location caches and it appears to do that by messing with the permissions on the files... which is somehow causing an error when the recovery tries to clean the /data directory in order to restore.
Thanks
Gary
link posted for testing.
thanks again gary loving it.
when I select wipe dalvik cache in CWM options it says dalvik cache wiped awfully fast. and after reboot and removing some bloatware.apks there are still loads of .dex files in /data/dalvik-cache including bloat that i removed.
So i just used root ecplorer to delete entire contents of folder. : )
is this not linked properly or CWM issue, or is this normal function?
thanks so much for your help.

I'll look into it. Please try this alternative to test that function: Boot your phone normally, and then reboot into recovery. Using the recovery menu, mount the /data partition. Then use 'adb shell' to shell into the device and manually look in the /data/dalvik-cache directory. Then "cd /" and from within recovery choose the advanced->wipe dalvik-cache. Then look in /data/dalvik-cache directory again to see if it did what it should have done.
It's possible, based on the ordering of your above description, that the dalvik cache rebuilt after you wiped it (during the reboot) but before you removed your bloatware.

so yeah, you must be right. dalvik-cache was full with /data mounted. cd / then wiped dalvik from CWM, which finishes in a split second; a list (ls) shows no dalvik-cache folder after wiping, completly gone.
Answers my question.
One other issue I ran into, that you're may be aware of is somehow I disabled the power button in CWM, it said something about back button disabled. I think I had to hold power for 10 sec. to reset device.
Thanks.

That one I'm not sure of and really can't help much with. No 'power' button means you can't select anything which would really be annoying.
it works great! instant root and cwm within 2 minutes! i highly recommend gary's method than the other one. i also don't seem to lose root access by clearing ram memory. SWEET.

formatting the internal SDCard isn't going to happen with this version of CWM (that's designed for GB.) Honeycomb devices don't have a seperate /sdcard partition to format. Formatting the "internal sdcard" can be done from within the settings menu via a factory reset.
The other two items aren't broken - they simply don't exist in CWM recovery, and probably never will... Is having the pre-loaded samsgung sample video and music files repushed to your device over and over actually more important to you than the ability to do a nandroid backup? Do you even know what the CSC is that isn't being updated?
Have you bothered to seach around BEFORE installing this? Have you bothered to search around AFTER installing it to find out how to restore to factory?
I'm NOT going to answer your specific question on the basis that it's been answered already and I honestly feel that a user of XDA needs to have the ability to SEARCH before posting.

worked like a charm...backup and restore works perfectly...
thanks gary !!!
Hey Gary-
Question -
Is it possible to get ROM manager to recognize the recovery flashed here? I'd like to flash the new version of CWM, which claims to fix the internal SD card problem, but when I install ROM Manager it doesn't recognize that I have CWM flashed.
I could just flash a new recovery from ROM Manager, but I don't want to screw anything up.
Thanks!

This recovery is CWM Based - it is not an official ROM Manager supported recovery. I have no idea what "internal SD card problem" you are referring to, as I had internal sd card issues resolved with this CWM-based recovery before I posted it (there's only a single version for the P6200.)
I'd actually advise against using the "ROM Manager" program on this device. It's not a supported device, and things can go terribly wrong when messing with recovery and firmware partitions that aren't explicitly supported.

Got it - sort of what I figured.
Am I wrong that Recovery still sees the external SD card as an internal SD card? I thought the last time I flashed a zip (boot animation) Recovery showed it as being on the internal card, even though it was actually on the external card. I could be wrong, though - and I don't have the device in front of me to check.
Not a big deal either way - thanks for the response, and your hard work!
*Edit*
Just realized I posted this in the wrong thread like an idiot - I have a P6210. guess that's what happens when you start posting things bc (before coffee).

[Q] CM 10 Upgrade: What Works Best together

Hello,
I am unable to load cm10 and I am unsure what I am doing something wrong.
Let me first say, I corrupted all my emmc partitions and with Leapinlar's forum on repair and a personalized zip file, all partitions, with the possible exception of partition 3 are repaired.
When the NC boots now, I go directly into CMR 5.5.04 (again, courtesy of Leapinlar). As for flash files, I have so many versions of the cm10 conversions and they may not be compatible or could be corrupt.
Which versions of CWM, CM10 and gapps should I be using together?
Thanks for all your help!

[Q] Droid MAXX TWRP Recovery and using USB OTG

I'm currently using TWRP 2.6.x on my XT1080MDEV and have a question specific to the device.
First, my use case: I like backup images... They are wonderful... BUT, they occupy space. To help alleviate this I've started offloading them to a USB OTG device via manually copying them in a file manager after mounting the device in StickMount. I would like to be able to restore from this device directly in recovery, just in case the world burns down.
My issue: attempting to mount in TWRP never finds anything and thus no restore from the USB OTG device works for me. As I understand it, TWRP recovery does support USB OTG.
How do I accomplish mounting a USB OTG device in TWRP on the Droid MAXX?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.... Its greatly appreciated!!

The TWRP I originally installed was from Hashcode here http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/development/recovery-unlocked-twrp-2-6-3-1-android-t2534850 and is version 2.6.3.1 which I believe supports USB OTG (But, obviously, its not working for me )
I looked around for dhacker29's version and all I can find is his thread in which someone asked about compatibility with Droid MAXX here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49475029&postcount=110 in which a reply has not yet been submitted. The thread includes a broken link to a TWRP img however I think they are housed here http://androidhosting.org/Devs/Dhacker29/MotoX/ even so I cannot validate compatibility and would not know which one to pick... I'm not bold enough to potentially brick either.
Any other ideas or more information anyone can provide?
Is anyone else trying to do images from an off device storage source? I would think this might be a common thing to do, given internal storage and get botched too.
Thanks to anyone who can help in advance!

I don't know if this will help but this is what I do. After unlocking I set up a bone stock ROM and then to nandroid back up. While its quite large, I keep this backup on my SD in its original location. As I move forward with customization, tweaks, ROMs, ect I'll do a nand of that and move the file from the phone to PC. If anything should happen like bootloop or otherwise borking something I have the stock nand immediately available to restore and bail me out. If I want I can then hook up to PC and load the backup I want and restore through TWRP.

Hey, do u have telegram? If so hit me up on there @rcc2002 username "Ritmo".. Im working on getting you help on this subject as soon as possible because I am so happy that you were able to create this. It does temporary boot. I didn't try flashing it but the problems that create the black screen I believe are Android security during boot, usually something to do with dmverity i think, the no touch screen working is usually a driver issue that just needs a proper driver being installed in the build. Or even pushed with a terminal cmd poss I've seen.. And the two errors coming up permission denied for system root is one I've seen before and is I believe very common. All mostly has to do with Android security and all the little annoying issues in building a permissive recovery I suppose. But anyway the dude I'm going to ask will basically tell you probably exactly what to do the second he sees or hears the errors and sees ur files.. what do the two zip files contain? And how did you build this exactly? Curious.. from common trees from scratch or a device tree builder? if you don't have telegram, just text me 856-896-7600..... ~RAY..
They contain most of kernel files and recovery and boot stock backup. Build.prop fstab and ueventd.rc. Also the device tree all pulled from the device root using root explorer. I ported this over from a different device that had the exact same specs. I used AIK for windows and modified the files to correlate with the moto g stylus 2021.
ID like to work on this also do you have someway to communicate? I may have found one of the kernel source codes you can try building with.
In all honesty I just need somebody to help me learn how to install touch drivers into the recovery. Then I will use avbtools to resize the file to its proper size. Just need the info. The rest of the recovery works. I've tested almost all of it. Haven't tested adb yet but I'm sure that won't be a problem if faulty.
Here is the block partitions I used to partly configure the recovery. It's a bit messy but I think it's OK. Not trying to type all this out. Pulled from device last night.

yes I know but that's the next closest device.
I'm mid-level to flashing but new(ish) to XDA here. Since this device is so similar "can" you flash the 5G ROMS to the 2021 ? And it boot/work somewhat ? Referring to Lineage OS for the most part since these devices are still somewhat "new" .. Trying to find the best place to ask and this seems to be it so far. No posts much yet in 2022 ..

The Moto G Stylus 5G has a different SoC, so this most likely would not work.
I just upgraded to android 11 on my moto g stylus 2021 XT2115-1 but now I cannot figure out how to root it I can install magisk and patch the boot but it does not stick and keep root but it does show ramdisk as yes, so not sure what the deal is, it has been awhile but it looks like to achieve it we will have to get rid of dmverity and vbmeta at least. to be able to keep a root or roll back to droid 10.
Well I cannot help with twrp but I was able to upgrade to android 11 and get root with magisk rather easily check this post all credit goes to the poster. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/root-question-for-moto-g-stylus-xt2115-1-2021.4259413/

OTG adapter and mouse necessary
I am wondering if anyone can fix this recovery or possible port a new one with the files I have included. I am willing to test if you don't have a device to test on. My original post is here
Post in thread 'TWRP coming?'
TWRP coming?
Just saw the following article from XDA regarding TWRP v3.5 being released. I'm hopeful that this means that for devices that ship with Android 10 that TWRP will be able to decrypt the data partition in order to facilitate a complete backup...
forum.xda-developers.com
Here are the files and recovery backups.
Resolution is 1080x2400
Board is SM6150
Aarch64
Stock android 10
Please help anybody with the know how. Thanks. I'll buy anybody a pizza for doing this! Get it working right and I will definitely support.
External_sdcard says unknown filesystem but still functions to backup all partitions except /vendor, /system and /product individually. Allows /super backup.
/vendor and /system_root (permission denied)
touch screen not functioning in recovery
Flashing causes black screen after boot logo splash
I used AIK on windows 10 with notepad++
*EDIT*
added driver to /sbin in /ramdisk. updated recovery below.

I have the xt2115-1 and am curious to know what ever came of this. Was a working TWRP ever accomplished? I am trying to install a custom rom on my phone, but I can't seem to move past a permission denied issue in fastboot and can't seem to locate a working TWRP. Any suggestions?
