Saw this on the AT&T forums, not sure if it works though.

this doesnt do anything at all .
i live in an area with no 3g coverage.. despite att sending me emails stating its be "coming" since last summer. anyways...
I set the phone to 3g only mode and I still get signal
-Go to the ThunderBolt's phone dialer. Enter ##778# and hit Send.
-You'll get a pop-up labeled EPST, with the choice to "View Mode" or "Edit Mode." --You want "Edit Mode."
-You'll be asked for a password. It's 000000.
-Now flip down to "Modem Settings," and then choose "Rev. A."
-Change the setting from eHRPD to "Enable," hit OK, then press the Menu button on the phone and tap "Commit Modifications."
This gave me 3G back, hopefully works for others.
gonna try that thanks

Worked for me also
Started seeing nothing but 1xx when I know I've got 3g available. This fixed it. My next question is "why was it not enabled?".
Thanks again.
I'm pretty sure it has to be set to eHRPD if you want to do simultaneous voice and data on 3G.
One of the main advantages of eHRPD is the ability to provide seamless service mobility between HRPD and LTE access networks with a single mobility management protocol. Moreover, with eHRPD, the operator can leverage the benefit of optimized handover – no dropped sessions and reduced handover latency — between LTE and eHRPD.
Do all this steps.
1. I dial ##778#
2.tap edit mode
3.password. is 000000
4.tap on modem settings
5.tap Rev.A
6.Tap on enable
7.Tap on the menu on your phone
8.Tap on Commit modifications
And after you do that your phone should reboot and you should have 3g
THEN AFTER THE REBOOT
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Okay now scroll to the bottom. the box should say "LTE MODE" I have no 4G service in my area. So I only got. 1x. I changed my radio settings to auto PRL. Its 3G only saves battery. And for. 3G and LTE
Is (CDMA+LTE/EvDo) then after just press the home button then. 1x will disappear then 3G will appear there you go. Ladies and gentlemen

Let me guess, you don't really understand what you just copy/pasted.
I followed the instructions like another thread comment said to do but for some reason I couldn't get it to work still but after playing around I was able to get it working.
---- Instructions for enabling: (thanks eyecon82) ----
1. dial ##3282#
2. then click edit (need MSL code) (I used SPCUtility.apk as nothing else worked on my S5)
3. then click LTE
4. It will show LTE ( also known as Band 25), Band 3, Band 26, Band 41 ( I unchecked marked all of these but the LTE option leave that check marked to on)
5. Disable all bands leave LTE check mark to say on.
6. Go to the main directory by hitting back key and choose More at the bottom
7. Choose HDR/1X Selection and choose LTE only Mode. Click OK to save
8. You can either reboot or I just turn on airplane mode and turn it back off to reset the connection.
9. LTE should be working like mine did. But you will not get phone calls until you turn back on the HDR/1X Selection to LTE + CDMA +EVDO Mode but you will get text messages fine.
The items that are underlined in Red are the stuff i added.
---- To tell what Band on: ----
1. ##debug#
2. enter passcode 777468
3. go to LTE engineering menu
I hope this helps because all the other stuff I read would not work for my Galaxy S5 I just bought.
Thanks
I have a stock Sprint Note 5 SM-N920P with latest Nougat update. I changed jobs and the service isn't very good there. According to signal apps I get about 53% LTE signal at my office with a whopping 250 Kbps. Randomly throughout the day it just drops down to 3g and stays there and Sprint's 3g is useless. If I turn on airplane mode and then off again it will usually reconnect to LTE. How do I prevent the phone from dropping to 3g? I don't see that option in the network settings only LTE/CDMA in preferred settings. I signed up for the Magic Box but haven't heard back from them yet. I might just buy my own personal signal booster if Sprint doesn't come through. I was looking at this one: https://cellphonesignalbooster.us/weboost-home-4g-470101-desktop-booster-kit/ or this: https://www.signalbooster.com/products/ez-4g Anyone have any experience with boosters? It has to have an internal antenna for my situation.
When i had a Note 4, i could force LTE connection by hitting *#2263# and entering the service mode.
You need to be rooted for this to work.
1. Download Shortcut Master
2. Open and go to Secret Code Explorer
3. Select 2263 and option 0 (root)

Thanks but I am not rooted and no longer need this. I was lucky and got a Magic Box and wouldn't you know... it actually IS Magic. I'm certain this thing is going to give me cancer but at least I have fast LTE!
1.)Remove third party potential threating apps just to be sure.
2.)Always make sure the phones up to date on the latest firmware.
3.)The next step is to go to the dialer ##72786# that forces the phone to reactivate.
4.)Next step go back to the dialer and dial ##3282#
4.2)Go to edit
4.3)Then type 000000
4.4)Then go to LTE
4.5)Then go to band 41 that is enabled and uncheck to disable.
4.6)Then go to band 25 that is enabled and uncheck to disable.
4.7)Then go to band 41PCII that is enabled and uncheck to disable.
5.)Reboot the phone don't expect full LTE service yet there are still some more steps...
6.)Go to settings find VOLTE and enable. Search VOLTE in the search bar to enable it.Swipe right on the button to turn it on. New icon will pop up at the top of the phone if done correctly.
7.)Then go back to the dialer and type ##3282#
7.2)Go to edit
7.3)Then type 000000 again
7.4)Then LTE again
7.5)Then go to band priority
7.6 & 7.7)Set both bands 41 and 25 to the bottom of the list by typing the number 17 on band 25 and 18 on band 41 and that pushes them down the list. Make sure band 26 is set to 1 on the priority list.
7.8)Then turn off your phone and turn it back on.
This fix is broken from a network reset or ##72786# update or Samsung software update. So reapply the fix after each update or network reset
