[Firmware] Flashing a carrier-free firmware - Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello guys,
Long story short, I bought an S8 plus at the beginning of this year, carrier-unlocked it (it used to be on Vodafone Romania) and everything went good (I didn't root it because I didn't feel the need to do it) but the only issue is that I have stopped receiving any software updates (still on Android 8).
My question is, given the fact that my current firmware is the Vodafone carrier one and CNX(Vodafone Romania) CSC even though my phone got carrier-unlocked, will there be a problem if I flash a Romania carrier-free official firmware from sammobile?
I tried asking this in different threads but no answer so far.
Thanks!

if its the G9##F model, and the recovery is stock, you will still receive updates as planned from whatever firmware version you flashed and your IMEI. Also, i have seen many people with similar issues across several Sammy devices in the recent past and honestly, the best solution is to download the firmware yourself and force it on. It takes a grand total of like 20 min provided you have a decent internet connection. Get the Frija firmware download tool here and get whatever version you need in 1/10th the time it would take if downloading from sammobile.com/firmwares directly.
just d/l it yourself and flash it manually

not that this is at all really pertinent, but my fiancee was born and raised in Piatra Neamt, and ive visited her homeland on two separate occasions for 3 weeks each time. I freaking love Romania! Its gorgeous, the food is superb (mici is now one of my favorite things of all time). Its just a shame that its being run by what seems to be a bunch of crooks. Buna sera!!

side note, i run a S9 (G960u) and flashed the U1 firmware a while ago and just today got an OTA update. Just figured id let ya know since it literally just happened like an hour ago

I have a problem to upgrade the firmware s8 g950u tmb, because the firmware model listed on the cellphone is different from the one printed on the pcb and also recovery mode, on the recovery reads the g950u but the cellphone information shows g950f, I live in Indonesia how should I choose the firmware suitable for my s8, now the condition of the phone is still on Android 7.0 thank you.

you may have a phone that has been repaired then. the 950f firmware will not work on a 950u or any of its snapdragon brethren. If you are absolutely certain that youre running U firmware, then just stick with that and manually update with the HOME_CSC every once in a while.

yes, I believe this is the G960U firmware, if I pay attention to the serial number of this Firmarr as the G950U firmware which is changed by "U" to "F" AP G950FSQU2CRB9 CP G950FSQU2CRB9 CSC G950f0YN2BRB9

the thing is tho, the U vs the F usually signifies the difference between a Snapdragon vs Exynos processor, which arent cross compatible when it comes to firmware

the U variants are the carrier branded versions and have apps baked into the firmware that are not uninstallable and have their own respective CSC, the U1 variants are non branded, unlocked versions that arent encumbered by carrier crapware

Any roots for galaxy s7 Sm-G930U?

The "special edition" of the galaxy s7 US unlocked just came out a few days ago. I'm wondering if anybody knows a way to root this variant yet. Will the G930F root work for this version?
It will probably be the same story as the current carrier locked models. I am just waiting for the unlocked firmware to come out so I can try flashing my carrier variant S7.

I was trying to help evobyte with Smart Switch but our end verdict was Smart Switch doesn't have compatibility with G930U yet. Makes sense because when I contact Samsung regarding the G930U they said that model didn't exist and not a US model. Told them how it was just release and after being put on hold they apologized. So yea...
Damn we need to find a way to get that firmware it's bloat free. I was gonna test on t-mobile s7.
Hey man, root is availible. The 930a/935a root will work. Also, once rooted, you should TOTALLY download flashfire and make a COMPLETE backup and upload it do gdrive and pm it to me or post the link if you're OK with the drive traffic.

may you report back to see if it works
When you experience performance issues and battery drain after root, use kernel auditor AND kernel toolkit.
Use toolkit to set the correct cpu frequencies for both sets of cpus, and governor, then use auditor to turn off all thermal options. I'm currently working on a root with the bugs fixed. But for now, just do that and make sure no apps are disabled and make sure "require pin on reboot" is not on

Which network are you on? I am on Vodafone and updates get pushed out super quick compared to the likes of EE who take an eternity.
Also mine was Vodafone branded but debranded it by flashing XEU so maybe you can try that?
Mine is unbranded (bought from Samsung Online store) and I'm on O2 network.
Do I need to flash another firmware to get updates more quickly?
I thought on an unbranded phone the carrier was irrelevant when it comes to updates. Maybe I was wrong?
I'm on BTU as well and I have nothing either.
EE carrier but my phone is unbranded from Samsung too.

I had the same thing when I had a S6 unbranded it took forever to get updates on BTU sometimes it was way after the carrier updates.
Not sure if you can go BTU to XEU but no harm in trying as it does not require a wipe of the phone.
**EDIT**
Another way is use samsung smart switch to see if there is an update using that.

The steps are to flash the unlocked S8+ firmware to your sprint device. The unlocked S8+ firmware has no bloat. You can always reinstall the sprint firmware back when you are returning your device (I think it's as easy as that)

No it's not... I'm sure you have to but unlocked firmware is AQH3 and for you to get to beta I'm sure you needed to move to the most recent update. It could work it could not. I'm sure the modified Odin will work but again could be wrong.

I have the same problem as the OP, AT&T told me that having the phone carrier unlocked did not make a difference. They also said I needed a warranty replacement, I called bull, so I reached out to Samsung, they told me to go to Best Buy to get them to push the update. I dont have the time to sit there for hours. So I come to you guys.
If what you say is true then I just need to be a bit more patient. Or should I just go to Best Buy and let them fiddle with my phone?
