I need help with opening a android backup on my pc - General Questions and Answers

I have a backup of my samsung galaxy s6 active on my computer...I have two files actually, one that says "samsung" then "smart switch" then another folder that says "SM-G890A" then opens to all my backup categories. The problem is I no longer have the phone only my backup and my new phone is a google pixel. I can seem to restore it. I actually just wanted to view the backup first then select what I want to put on my new phone. Is this possible on my pc running windows?

[Q] How to restore Helium Files

So I just got an HTC One, and I'm trying to restore some of my app data (mostly save games... note I do NOT want a full backup that's why I used Helium because I heard it can backup specific apps only) from my old Nexus 4. Since I didn't pay for Helium Premium, I just copied the carbon folder (I assume that is where it's storing the backups) from my Nexus 4 and transferred it to the PC. I then plugged my HTC One and copied the carbon folder in the root of the Internal Storage.
However, when I click "Restore" on Helium on my HTC One, it says it cannot detect any backup files. I also tried manually copying the files from carbon to the data folder and overwrote the files there, but when I start the game it still sends me to the beginning as if I started from scratch. Should I put the carbon folder elsewhere or something? I really need help because I do not want to start these games from the beginning again
Same issue here, except I use a Nexus 7 and only this Nexus 7. Used Helium to make a backup of some apps, stored the folder on my PC. Completely reset the Nexus 7 and transferred back the folder but Helium doesn't see the carbon folder with backup apps in it. If I backup a new app it does place the backup in that specific folder...
Helium restore issues
I had the same issue as you both. I fixed it the hard way. I had to download and install each app that I wanted to restore (from Play store). I started each app (so that Helium would see them) without any configuration. Then I did another backup of all the apps I wanted. I then copied all of the .ab files from the original backup to the new backup folders. Restore... voila!

This is probably the most fool-proof solution. I do have a question about text messages, though. Everything else seemed to work (thanks for this solution, definitely helpful to at least confirm data). Anyways - the one thing I can't seem to figure out is how to restore text messages (com.android.providers.telephony.ab) - I've tried to do it as a whole app using the PC interface, tried copying the folder as a replacement via Android File Transfer to the 'carbon' folder, etc.
When I try to restore via helium server, it quickly shows me everything as restored but I don't see the messages. When I try to do it manually (e.g. force copy), I don't see an option under "Restore and Sync" to actually select messaging.
Am I missing something stupid / obvious? The raw data seems to be there (for example, call logs were uploaded just fine, text messages seem to have an issue).

So I came up with a solution based on what works for others. Why this works when it didn't previously is beyond me, but hopefully someone else can use it if individual parts of their Helium backup don't work properly (in theory it should work for any app / SQL dataset). The whole point of Helium is that we're running non-rooted phones and so Titanium Backup or the like aren't applicable. For reference, I'm running an N4 to OSX 10.7.x
1. Use the Helium Server to create a full backup.
2. Wipe phone or whatever you need to do (I had to do a factory reset for Google since it's an N4 and my proximity sensor is dead).
3. Install the apps you had previously via Play Store (pain in the a**).
4. Run Helium server and upload the backup data.
5. Update apps as needed (should be auto but who knows for individual stuff).
6. Check app data in apps. Texts are obviously easy to see for me. Hopefully everything restored nicely for you here.
***Now for the bit for people who got corrupted restores.
7. Unzip the backup file on your computer, select the .ab files that correspond to the missing / corrupted restores and then zip those into a new file on your computer (for step 9). Keep these files handy in unzipped form as well for step 10.
8. Perform a new Helium backup of those sections onto the internal SD card (yes it will be blank, worry not).
9. (Optional step): Run Helium server and upload that new zip file (with the stuff that didn't make it) alone. Try restore. Unlikely to work but worth a shot.
10. Running Android File Transfer, find the SD card, find the folder 'carbon' and then find the corresponding sub-folders that have the modules that were corrupted. Replace the SD card backups of the broken modules with the good ones from your computer.
11. Run Helium restore again, but only for the sections you want (I swear, for me Messaging didn't show up the first few times but after step 10 it did).
12. Wait, hoepfully it works well. I would reboot after running the restore to a) kill Helium and b) confirm functionality.
FWIW, my telephony.ab was 1.8MB and took SIX hours to restore. Seriously. Yeah yeah, that's a lot of texts but six hours? I've since added "SMS Backup & Restore" to my phone and will probably just use that, map out my phone layout and functionality and just manually replace apps from now on since most data is in the cloud. You lose some stuff, but prima facie it's boat tons easier.
Hopefully that helps someone else who had the same issues.
Best,

I know super old thread - Just wanted to thank you for the above. Before migrating to a new Nvidia Shield I used Helium to backup to my Mac - however when I tried to restore onto the new device it kept saying "Invalid backup file" (Any idea why?) Anyway, you're approach saved me! Yea bit of pain to download all the apps again first, but at least this above worked, so thanks!

[Q] Back-up transfer

I have a samsung galaxy s2 and I am thinking of upgrading to a samsung galaxy s4. But I want to keep all the existing apps, data, messages, emails, etc... from the s2 to the s4, upon that the Rom itself. So is it possible to backup the s2 Rom then root the s4 and extract all the data from the backup onto the s4. Is that possible or will the firmware not allow it. So my question is "Is it possible to transfer a backup from a different phone onto an other phone?"

Hi,
I don't think you should do what you want, because it can cause a lot of problems, if you just transfer data between different Android versions.
However, I think you can synchronize almost everything to yout Google Account (contacts, emails, phone numbers, installed apps, maybe even the data for them), so these informations will not get lost.
The only exception is SMS, but that can be solved too: there is an app on Google Play that can do that for you. (Name is "SMS Backup & Restore" made by Ritesh Sahu)
You backup SMS messages to XML file, keep it somewhere (for example microSD card), and from the new software you install this app again, and simply restore your backup. If something fails, that is no problem, since messages will be in XML files, and you can even read them with a text editor, so they will not disappear
So my advice is: backup SMS messages, and sync every other. But remember to do these before you do anything that can erase these data (or before you want to take them to the new device).
Developers advise everyone not to backup app data and restore on a different version android because not only they cause application crash, they may also write the wrong lines in system paths ( sorry I've forgot the actual reason :silly: )
If you want a fresh install of your current ROM, it's ok to backup and restore everything
I normally go with Go Backup Pro cracked
Hi,
You have another app, called SMS Backup + by Jan Berkel.
With this app you can do the backups of SMS, Call Logs and Whatsapp in Gmail, each one in their respective folder. Then, if you have Outlook, these new mails can be downloaded to your PC (using filters). The backups can be done automatically.

[Q] Titanium Backup - dropbox back up

Hi,
recently purchased the titanium backup pro.
I have 2 android devices that are using it
samsung tab s and a S6.
I noticed that both devices upload to the dropbox in a single location - dropbox/TitaniumBackup.
Will it cause any issues of files being overwritten as there will definitely be some overlapping apps that i got for both devices.
Or will the file name be individualized so that will not be any problems when i restore back ups.
Another thing is, i usually do a manual restoration of my backup to the sdcard , now that both backups are in a single location, how can i "correctly" seperate them so i can transfer the correct one back to my device?
Or is there a feature within titaniumbackup that im not knowing, which can help to directly restore the backup from the dropbox location?
Btw, im upgrading my Samsung Tab S OS kitkat to lollipop.
will my data backup be still valid for usuage?

[SOLVED] Cannot restore Helium backup (nor adb backup)

Hi all, I'm trying to transfer all my apps and data from my previous (non-rooted) phone to my S7.
I used helium backup before, so I went ahead and backed up everything, but restoring fails. I then discovered that all Helium does is call the equivalent of "adb restore", so I decided to try the manual way. I performed a full backup ("adb backup -all") from my old phone, and it created a sizable 1.7Gb backup.db file, but when I went to restore it ("adb restore backup.db"), the S7 showed the prompt asking "A full backup of all data to a connected desktop computer has been requested", instead of the restore prompt. I noticed Helium gets the same prompt when trying to restore.
Anybody having the same issue, or any idea of what's going on?
My phone is a SM-G930F (UK Exynos) model, running Android 7.0.
My computer is running linux with adb version 1.0.36.
Any help is appreciated. I haven't rooted my S7 yet, and I'm debating if I should, but if I had root on the S7, would this be any easier? Keep in mind that the old phone (honor 5x) is not rooted, so titanium backup is not an option.
Thanks!
Tl;DR: it evenaually, magically started working
As it turns out, this device (and maybe others) shows the "Full backup" UI and asks permission to "BACK UP MY DATA" even when requested to restore, so, in fact, clicking "BACK UP MY DATA" restores it. Very intuitive. The issue must've been somewhere inside adb, but I was able to bypass it using the /system/bin/bu utility directly, as in:
Code:
cat backup.ab | adb shell /system/bin/bu restore
Unfortunately, after waiting several minutes for that to finish, none of my app data was there. Great.
Alright, let's have another look at Helium: since it uses some kind of UI automation, I can only guess it gets confused by the misleading UI, and so I discovered the option "Use key events instead of tap events" under settings. I don't know if that made any difference honestly, I just know that I tried again and it finally restored my apps. I then disabled it, and tried to re-restore something, and again it worked... sigh.
Basically, I still have no clue about what went wrong, but it eventually worked. I just wish Google provided a universal backup solution for all android devices, or even better, let us have root so I can use Titanium! After all I'm root on my PC, why do I have to jump through hoops to get the same on my phone?
Going through this ordeal reminded me of why I don't like upgrade to a new device very often.
hello i have a samsung s7 vodafone-Italy. I have a problem with connection with helium backup, i have a version 6 of android.
Well I install helium backup on smartphone, i have install some drivers (maybe not good??) i have installa application helium for chrome, and i try on windows 7 and windows 8.

Samsung A51, WhatsApp Couldn't restore messages

Hi guys,
I don't know either this is appropriate place to post this issue here or not.
I just bought a new Samsung A51 and restored all stuff from my previous phone using Smart Switch.
Finally, when i tried to restore WhatsApp messages, it says "Couldn't restore messages ", "Check your phone's internet connection and tap Retry to restore"
I have retried several times while connected with WiFi and Mobile data too but no success. I have also uninstalled WhatsApp and then installed latest version from Play Store but not succeeded.
Can anyone help on this?
Yesterday I switched from Note 9 to A51.
Smartswitch told me it wouldn't be able to transfer my conversations so I did the following with success:
Open WhatsApp on the old device, go to Settings -> Chats and do a local backup.
Zip the whole WhatsApp folder in the root of the internal memory.
Transfer the whole zip file to the new phone, unzip it.
Use SmartSwitch to transfer WhatsApp.
Launch WhatsApp on the new phone. Do not use any recovery options you get presented with before the activation process. After confirming your phone number whatsapp will tell you it found a local backup which it will use.

How long would that take you think? I have my A51 but haven't used it yet and I'm wondering if it is better to wait for a root method
