fingerprint scanner problems - Samsung Galaxy S10e Questions & Answers

So I'm very frustrated with the fingerprint scanner, it's having strange behavior and it's not detecting my finger all the time and also some times without touching it it says that the finger can't be recognized and try clean the sensor. 90% of its time it's working properly without problems. Anybody else having the same problem or anything else or it's just me?

I have this problem as well when phone is locked with screen off. Sometimes I feel my finger is not fully touching the sensor but I am not sure. It is hard to reproduce the failure and it doesn't give a vibration of failed reading.

Also, I'm having the sensor to be recognized when i touch it, not when i press it and there are moments when nothing happens, like I'm not touching it although my finger is on the sensor and the only way to make it work is to wake the screen

Me too. I was wondering if it has anything to do with the issue we experience.

I don't think so, because it says to clean the fingerprint sensor but the sensor it's cleaned, if it was that feature it should say another message

Fingerprint Scanner Not Working Properly?

Hi guys, the fingerprint scanner was working fine when I first got the device. I could unlock the device just by doing a soft touch on the home button and it would unlock from a dead screen. After taking the t-mobile update, I would have to wake the device first then do the soft touch in order to unlock it. Has anyone gotten this problem or is it just me? It is starting to bug me with would like others to let me know if they can unlock the device without waking it by just doing a soft touch on the home button. Your input would be much appreciated.

Tried it, also did a factory reset and you still have to wake the device and have your finger scanned. When I first got the phone and set it up, I was able to unlock the device just by soft touching the home button, but after the update that t-mobile pushed, I'd have to wake the device then have my finger scanned. If anyone can confirm that you can unlock the device just by soft touching the home button, before you took the update that would be appreciated.

For all we know, he updated the software before doing the video. Not saying it's right or wrong, just putting that out there.
Yes, I am 100% sure that a soft touch on the home button would wake and unlock the device. I set my finger print at first start and I was playing with the scanner for a good 30 minutes. A soft touch would unlock the device without waking it, but after taking the update I would have to wake the device to unlock it. Maybe the update changed it?

Just tested this on brand new AT&T 64GB Edge
Must press button first and leave thumb on. It unlocks in about half a second.

Fingerprint While Screen is Off?

My wife just got her S8+, and we were trying to get the fingerprint sensor too unlock to the home screen the way her pixel would. The way it works now, she has to awkwardly reach for the sensor, then swipe up to unlock the device. Any suggestions, or are we out of luck unless Samsung devices to make this a feature in an update?
Did you enable 'Fingerprint unlock' in the settings? I'm able to unlock my S8+ while the screen is off just by putting my finger over the scanner without swiping anything.
I'm not sure of this caused it, but we ran a system update and it started working as expected. Again it may be a coincidence, but it started working right after the update. Mods can delete this thread of they want, it's not a relevant question since it seems to have been a bug.

How is the fingerprint unlock supposed to work? On my Nexus 6P, with the screen off, you just put your finger over the sensor and the phone turned on, unlocked. But it seems the S8 requires you to push the power button, then use the fingerprint scanner. Is that correct? Is there a way to have the fingerprint sensor turn on the screen?
(Yes, I do have "fingerprint unlock" turned on in settings.)

I don't have to push my power button to get it to unlock. I just place my finger over the sensor with the screen off and it works instantly and doesn't show the lock screen.
Don't delete it, I almost gave up on this option, reading this made me try again and it's much improved, thanks!
Interesting. I'm not sure what I'm missing, but I can't get mine to do that.
Edit: I may have bigger problems. I can't actually get the phone to lock. I have smart lock turned off and only pattern selected for screen unlock type, but I can just swipe on the lock screen and go to the home screen, without entering the pattern. I assume these two issues are related.
Further edit: OK, the second issue was because of the "secured lock time" setting. So, unrelated.

Well, I got it to work. It actually was the "secured lock time" setting. Basically, if the phone isn't actually locked (because the time in that setting hasn't passed), even though the screen is off, the fingerprint sensor won't wake it. But if more than the set time has elapsed, it does.
Not the best design, but that explains it. My advice: set the secured lock time to zero ("instantly with the power key or when the screen times out").

Hmmn, I have mine lock instantly via power button and tried it... Still works for me
I didn't explain it well. Locking instantly is the way to go.
For some reason, it's set up to use biometrics only if the screen is locked, not just off.

Posted this before but with all the setting correct.
You can simply put your finger on the sensor and it will unlock right to the home screen.
You need to habe the finger print unlock turb on.
This has to be my favorite feature on this phone, beside using it to pull the notification bar down

Does it work on s7 edge?
Is there anyway so I can unlock my phone when it's off using fingerprints?

Fingerprint unlocks phone while in the pocket

Hello,
I've recently discovered that if you try and place a finger on the fingerprint sensor while the phone is in your pocket, the screen will successfully unlock, which I believe it's not normal behaviour. Every time I pull it out of my pocket the screen turns on and the phone unlocks, leaving it prone to accidental taps and inevitably open random apps every time.
Does anybody else have this issue?
I just tested it. Same here.
If I cover the sensors while the phone is just sitting there and then place my finger on the fingerprint reader - it registers it and unlocks the phone.
If the phone is unlocked and I cover the sensors - I get a message that the touch protection is active and it doesn't allow me to click on the screen.
Great "touch protection", Huawei. Good job on this one.

Yeah, it basically works only once the phone has already been unlocked, lol.
Nice addition to the stupid lock-screen notification issue we are having in the other thread. How awful.
At least I'm glad I'm not the only one, I'll try and open a chat when I have some spare time to waste...

OP 6 Automatically unlocks

Hi,
I have a problem with my OP6. I hae the latest OOS 5.1.11.
When I have the phone in my pocket, it's locked, than quite often when pulling out of the pocket I naturally grab it the way, that mu thumb is in the screen (I am not touching the fingerprint sensor) and when I take it out of the pocket, the screen unlocks itself.
Is this problem related to the issues people have posted regarding pocket mode not working and allowing to unlick with fingerprint while still in pocket or another bug or maybe hardware issue?
Thanks
face unlock??
No, its even before it's able to "see" my face. I just feel a small vibration under my finger and it unlocks. Also, for face unlock to be activated I would need to wake up the screen, but the problem is, it wakes up on it's own.

I think you have enabled the 'double tap to wake' option. Sometimes when you hold the phone and touch the screen, it recognizes it as if you double tap it, and then face unlock kicks in. I personally have enabled an extra required swipe up after face unlock to unlock my phone as a solution.
Yes, I have been using double tap to wake, and everything was fine, as I have the phone since the launch. I have started noticing the issues recently. Also, if just touching the screen activates the "double tap" then obviously something is not right, because it happens quite often. I have disabled pocket mode for now to see if anything changes.

Proximity sensor

Good morning, i have a Note 20 Ultra exynos version and when i test the proximity sensor i have no response. It's possible ??
Thanks
yes, it is implemented differently. it works fine with apps that support it
What do you mean by "test"?
When you're on a phone call it should turn off the screen if you cover the sensor.
No if i cover the entire note the screen is always on.

Using the mic not in speaker phone mode?
If so it sounds like it's not working... phone screen should go dark when it's against your face on a call.
Try clearing the system cache on the boot menu, this may fix it.
Try it in safe mode for the off chance a 3rd party is the cause.
When i try with a call it seems to work but after two or three attempts the screen remain on also if i close the cover..

Not sure but that sounds like software.
You said cover as in a wallet case?
There may be a setting for that but if so I have no clue.
Doesn't sound like a normal operation unless it's a Samsung case and it's suppose to do that.
Don't think there's even a visible specific system apk for it. You could try clearing the Android Systems cache maybe data too but that may cause more trouble with lost settings... and end up worse off for the trouble.
On the note 10+ a small faint blinking circle is visible about a quarter inch to the right of the front cam cut out when the proximity sensor is active. Not flashing, not active.
If that helps you any...
Note: if it's active during a call and I trip it 2-4 times with a second or two spacing, the screen will remain off until I turn it back on.
This is normal operation.
Ok thaks a lot for your explanation..
I'm having the same issue which started today. Every time I put the phone up to my ear to place/ receive calls the proximity sensor isn't working and I'm pressing all random buttons accidentally with my cheek. I've turned my phone on and off to try to get it to work and no dice. It was working fine before today so I'm not sure what happened. I didn't drop my phone or anything. A google search showed this has been a problem since the S10 when Samsung embedded the sensor under the screen and dropped to turn on/ off this feature under call settings.
Advice anyone?
Try in safe mode. If it works there it's most likely a 3rd party app.
Was -anything- updated or just installed?
Did you change any settings?
Try a "hard" reboot and clear System Cache in boot menu.
Clear Android Systems cache.

Is a hard reboot restoring everything to factory settings? If not can you provide me the steps I need to complete to get there and If I need to back up everything and how to go about doing that? I'm a novice who's learning everyday so I appreciate your patience

No! Not a hard reset!
Hard reboot simulates pulling the battery...
I think I got it to work again. Hard reboot I guess according to google is pressing the “Volume down” and Power / lock key for 10 to 20 seconds bypassing the options shown on the screen until the phone turns off by itself. I then pressed the volume up key and the power/ lock key until the android recovery menu came up on the screen. I then chose "wipe cache Partition" and rebooted the phone after that.
It seems to be working again and hope this helps anyone who starts encountering this problem like I did.

Clearing the System cache can fix a lot of Android voodoo gremlins. I clear mine regularly or if the Android is acting erratically.
Hello
I am the owner of a Note 20 Ultra starting today.
I previously had a Note 10 Plus, where the proximity sensor showed as a blinking white light near the front camera.
At Note 20 Ultra there is no sign of its presence, no blinking light. Is this normal? Can the real owners check and confirm?
I also checked with secret codes:
Using *#0*# and selecting Sensor opens a menu where I cant find any proximity sensor
Using *#77692# opens a window with proximity and light sensor; for proximity sensor I turn on and wave my hand over the front camera area, it vibrates and turns display green each time, but after several attempts (7-8) it stops working.
So, is this normal? It has a new algorithm or type of sensor?
Please check and confirm.
Thank you

Its possible that there is no sensor, I have not done any research on this but it is possible to use front camera as proximity sensor. It would mean that the function would activate when you are on call and not on loudspeaker, it should not be tough to implement.
It has a discreet proximity sensor...

I have seen this article but it is useful only to locate the proximity sensor. But regarding how it is actually working, there are no details.
I was expecting something similar with Note 10 Plus but there was no blinking led/pixel to be found when having a call.
And honestly, I am not very impressed with its functioning. When using phone on left ear especially it skips activating many times.
Also, during a call (normally not on speaker), when I cover the top of the phone with my hand, the screen does not go black instantly (I must keep it covered about 3-4 seconds) but if I puck up the phone to my ear it seems to activate, which makes me think it has an algorythm that includes other sensors like gyroscope. Or maybe my proximity sensor is faulty... but as I said, if I test it with proper code, it seems to be present and work.... Which makes me thing it is a software problem.
So, I come back to my previous details and kindly ask other Note 20 Ultra users to replicate similar behaviour.
Thank you
My note 20 Ultra sensor works fine if the speaker is off. Turn the speaker on and the proximity sensor is disabled.
Try using this code in dialer.
*#77692# and then turn proximity sensor on and put hand over top part if it lits up green then it's working as it should. But if it remains white and nothing happens then there is an issue with sensor.
