Usually when I get a new phone, I root it, get TB on there and restore. Works great. However, I think I'll use my S7 without root for a while, so no TB.
I know about Helium, is that the best way to go? What's your plan for March 11th?
I would say Helium as well, if not rooting. (provided root is found)
Mybackup is good for restoring sms/mms without root, not sure how it does that but it works.
My routine is make a backup with Helium, use smart switch to move most things to the new phone, restore app data from Helium for anything that did not come over with Smart Switch.

How did this work for you? I've always spent a day reinstalling apps, inputting passwords and losing data on the new phone because I don't want to screw anything up. Maybe I'm wasting my time.
My S7 arrived today, so I'll be moving everything tonight.
Just enable backup in the settings, force sync everything afterwards, then connect the USB cable and adapter that come with the S7 as described in the onscreen instructions.

It went fairly well. SmartSync copied over all the docs, pics, music, and many other things. I should have used the included adapter but WiFi direct was fast enough. The apps downloaded from the play store. Once that was done I ran the helium restore and got back most of my app data.
There are a few misses. Helium did not bring over my watch face libraries from either Watchmaker nor Pujie Black. I had to use methods in the app to transfer those. Usually Helium brings over the desktop, but this time it did not. I assume that was because I was going from Lollipop to Marshmallow. You do have to open your apps to re-login to them. A password manager is a big help with that. Some of the apps have new Marshmallow permission prompts when first opened so it is smart to just open all your core apps once you have everything transferred.
I use Titanium Backup, but potatoes potatoes.

As do I but won't do much without root.

All, what is the best way to backup and restore (Apps and Data for those Apps)? Smart switch doesn't seem to restore the actual data for the apps so you will have to reconfigure everything again. In the old days with root it was easy with Titanium Backup. I just don't want to have to setup everything from scratch. Thanks for taking the time to give any input.
Not much you can do without root.
Ive been through this with all tranfers. Nothing can get the app data. But most apps have internel backup to online so you dont lose much data if any.
With my stuff i only had to log in to my apps.
Everything else was auto backup to online or a data file on the phone and i just restore that in those apps
The app data/settings from my old Lollipop phone are backed up on Google Drive.
I bought a new Nougat phone but did not realise that I had to restore app data/settings on the first startup, and so didn't do that.
The old backup still shows up on Google Drive. Is there a way to restore the settings of some specific apps to my new phone?
I'm afraid not. Google drive is for storing data as it is. You can at most download your app data/settings to your new phone. As for whether the app data/settings applies to the related apps on your new phone or not is not sure. Maybe you can try yourself to figure it out. Since its a new phone, when fails you can reset to factory settings without much data loss.
Ok, so first post here, and I see from some others that I’m not alone with a few of the glitchy aspects of the software: like the moody wake-up wrist flick thing. After trying all resets etc., I backed up my Gear Sport, went and exchanged it for a new one, and now would like to restore that old backup to the new watch.
Yet, I get stuck on a frozen restore screen that simply tells me that it’s lookijg for backup data and that it may take awhile.... after quite the awhile, nada. Am I missing something? Can that old backup not port to a new watch? I mean it’s not the end of the world, as I cane reinstall the apps and such, but one would think that data would be portable and not tethered to a serial number or something .... right?
Right?
Thanks everyone.
Did you use the setting on the watch that asks if you are connecting to a new phone or did you just disconnect and try to pair? If the former it should find your back up in the cloud. I have found that if I force stop the gear app and clear cache the back up/restore feature would work for me
Don't know what happened, but the A13 update basically borked my phone. Dialer, messages, fingerprint reader, screen handling, notifications, Android Auto, etc ALL no longer work correctly. I never know how exactly the phone will behave on any given interaction. Its a mess. It was working perfectly fine on A12
So, I have to do some kind of a reset. I NEED my messages and call logs to be correct on restore (use it for lots of business stuff), everything else, whatever is backed up will be ok.
I tried doing a migration from the A13 6A to a factory reset Moto Edge 21 with A12 on it, and the A13 Pixel refuses to cooperate. Android migration usually works pretty well, but in this case, the 6A A13 refused to see the Moto A12, and gave me some super weird Android File Manager error message. I planned on using the Moto Edge as a data mule, reset the 6A, then migrate everything back.
So, I need to do a backup, reset and restore and am dubious of Google One actually working. Open to suggestions or actual experiences of how to do this with minimal disruption. Most of the internet "guides" on resetting are useless, and don't address how not to lose and/or destroy your data (text/messages, call logs, etc, incl MMS)
The only thing I can think of is using Wondershare Mobiletrans for backup and restore and cross my fingers that it'll actually work.
I use Swift Backup to backup and restore now. I would give that a try.
I use swift as well...but u have to have a backup app already in place BEFORE getting borked...lol There's limited options for going back to 12. As mentioned in the big PSA warning thread at the top...if u try to do a common rollback, google's ARB (anti-rollback) if triggered, WILL HARD=BRICK your phone! Then u have to send it back to google for a factory reset meaning ofc loss of all data. So plz use caution and no matter how u chose to proceed...Swift Backup is a gem! A one-time purchase ano NO monthly fees! Best regards...
Try updating again, I got two Android 13 updates on mine, the first one broke the fingerprint reader, then I hit update again, and it downloaded another update that subsequently fixed it.
If you just want to backup messages and phone calls, I use this:
SMS Backup & Restore - Apps on Google Play
A simple app that backs up and restores SMS & MMS messages and call logs.
play.google.com
Can back up to cloud as well as your device.
Otherwise I've had no issues with the Google backup in Settings.
