Floors counter not working, R760 Samsung Gear S3 Frontier - Samsung Gear S3

Hi,
The floors counter has always been spotty on my watch. I feel as if it has to do with low barometric pressure (ie it's less accurate on warm days).
After the last firmware update, the counter has virtually stopped working for days, every now and then it comes alive to measure a measly 3-4 floors and then dies again.
I've tried formatting the watch using the built-in function and then resroring personal data. It has not helped at all.
Is there a way to reflash the original (lastest) F/W, or to revert to the previous one?

Ive had the Gear 2 for 6 days. I bought it last thursday, put it on and paired it in the parking lot and then went to the gym. While riding the recumbent bike I noticed the heart rate monitor was accurate and matched up with the bike's up until around 125 bpm and then it would either give me the "cannot measure" error or would give back a really inaccurate reading... like 71 bpm when it should have been around 148-150. This has been the case every time i go to the gym, no matter how i wear the Gear 2, on the top side of my wrist or the bottom side. I actually live chatted with a Samsung Customer service rep and he told me to do a factory reset to see if that would help. I haven't gone to the gym to see if this helped.
Is this a known issue? I also shaved the hair off my wrist and am now wearing it a bit further up on my arm to test it again today when i go to the gym.
Also another question i had is when you turn the volume all the way up (level 6) when using the gear 2 as a speaker phone is it normal for the speaker to buzz slightly when a person is talking to you?

I have this issue for only a few minutes in an hour workout... but then it will go back to normal. I compared it to a strap heart rate monitor and it would stay +1-5 versus the strap. Otherwise it even gets up to 170 when I go hard. I usually start with it higher on my arm because my bone sticks out sometimes it doesn't get a good connection, but it usually falls and still tells accurately. Otherwise I would say it is accurate a majority of the time.

Yeah it must be how close I wear it to that bone. I actually took my first one back thinking there was something wrong with it... The problem is i have a big wrist... I think I will replace the band. Thanks for the reply!

Samsung Gear S2: Nike+ or S Health for running?

Hi, I just got this watch this weekend and haven't really got a chance to experiment with these apps yet. During the little bit of time I did, I experienced the Nike+ app would lag/skip while music was playing every time I would try to look at the screen. On the other side, the S Health caused my watch to reboot twice for whatever reason.
I was wondering, what are the differences between these apps? If you use one versus the other does the information still get transferred/communicated to the S Health information or the Nike+ results such as the distance and average pace? One other question, is there a way to make the display last longer? It seems as soon as I would try to see my current run's information, the movement of my arm would cause the display to shut off before I could switch between screens, which is pretty frustrating.
Anyone else have any experience with this? Thanks.

I didn't experience the issues you mentioned on the apps - maybe a reboot would help?
I did suffer from poor GPS reception on both apps, though S health seemed a little better on that front (just from a couple of runs). I'm on the TMobile 3g model.
You can connect the Nike and S health apps. When you do so, S health gets a new tile reporting some stats from the Nike app. Clicking on that tile will simply open the Nike app for the full details.
I'm not aware of a way to set a longer time out for the screen. I beleive this was added to a firmware update that so far is only available in Korea, hopefully we'll also get it at some point here in the US. Not sure if changing the screen to always-on might help with the hand movement issue - I'm using the wake up gesture too, so have no experience with that, unfortunately.

That's a good idea to always leave the watch face on, at least only while running, I just don't want to kill the battery in the first few hours. Hopefully, the firmware gets pushed to us soon, it would make that a lot easier.
Other think that really bothered me yesterday on my first run with the watch (3g, Tmo), was that I was listening music from the watch through some BT headphones, and when I pressed the home button to go to the music app to skip tracks, when I went back to the Nike+, it started again. Did not kept in the background!!!

Just to clarify, the data sharing is one way - you can see some data from Nike on S-health, but I don't think it works the other way round
Also, how can the data on my watch sync with my Shealth on the phone, is it possible?

Yes, the phone app gets stats from the watch - for example step count or heart rate measures are shown on the phone app. Unfortunately I don't remember if I had to do something to make it work or if it syncs automatically, but it's definitely working
Good to know. Looks like I'll be using Nike+ to start out with. To answer bebeloneovvl, I didn't do anything in the settings and my phone synced with my watch to the step. It didn't at first but over night it did and ever since then, once it's in bt range it syncs.
I also noticed that if you're running on the treadmill, if the location/GPS is on it isn't accurate at all, but if that's turned off it's pretty close to what's on the treadmill. Seemed to for me anyways. I didn't even attempt to start either app, the S Health just automatically recognized I was running. I'll have to try the Nike+ app tomorrow.
Thanks for the answer. I did a restart and it seems to work well now. Today on my second day of running, using the watch alone, the distance was wayyyy off. My 4 mile route, that I've been running forever, on the watch measured 3.50 miles. Found that pretty odd, maybe GPS signal drops along the route?

I haven't had the chance to run outside yet with mine, so I can't give you any advice on that, that does suck though... Which app did you use?
I found this thread while Googling inaccurate readings with the Nike app on Samsung Gear S2.
I've run outdoors with it 3 times so far and each time has been way off. Not only is the mileage off, but I noticed while looking at my mapped out run online afterwards that my path jumps all over the place. I ran on a track and it showed me running through the infield many times. Also, I was jogging on a 9 minute/mile pace, but the mileage breakdown showed I was running 4 to 5 minute miles then a huge lump sum of the leftover minutes went to the end of the run.
I've rebooted the watch before runs 2 and 3. I also switched GPS mode to GPS only and not 'GPS and Network'. On the 3rd run, I removed the link between Nike and S Health then ran without heartrate, music, or cheers. Still had inaccuracies.
I was in the market for a Nike watch, but when I saw the Gear S2's with built in Nike App I couldn't pass it up. I love everything else about the watch. I hope they can get these issues resolved. Mine is on the T-Mobile network.

I was really hoping for better results than that... I agree, I love the watch and all the capabilities it has but that's a pretty big factor for me. I really want to keep this, but if this is consistent then it may just be going back to AT&T. We'll see how accurate mine is this weekend. I'm sorry to hear that though.

With the watch being new, I'll give them a chance to fix it. Perhaps a Nike competitor will swoop in and create a better app. In general, there's not many apps available for the watch. I'm looking forward to what the developers can come up with.
running with g2 is inacurrate
I get some issues also. my 6 km run is only 5,5 km with the g2, because at some point, i was looking at the watch and it doens not counted that half km. I will try next time to run with the watch disconected for the phone, because I suspect that it takes the possition from the phone gps, and at some point, the watch disconects from the phone, and maybe that's why it drops the signal

I did some more experimenting today. I ran at a local high school 400m track (4 laps = mile).
Here's what I tried this time:
- Turned Bluetooth, WIFI, and NFC off
- Switched Location to GPS only
- I was using T-Mobile 4G network, clear blue Texas skies
- I unlinked the S Health and Nike App to try to prevent any clashing
- Closed all apps that were running
I launched the Nike app, didn't use music, heartrate, or cheers.
I jogged 8 full laps in lane 6 which should of been just over 2.1 miles but it logged me for 1.92.
My map was all over the place. I wanted to post screenshots but I'm a newb and can't until I have 10 posts here.
I don't expect it to be a perfect oval, but my cheap ZTE phone that I usually run with maps it much cleaner and a lot more accurate.
I ended that run, saved it, then ran another 8 laps in lane 2 with heartrate on this time. It says I jogged 1.8 miles instead of just over 2.
I noticed that there is no way to check the GPS signal before running. On both runs, it didn't show the map until halfway through the first lap. I wonder if that's when it started tracking my run
The phone app and Nike watches sync up and make sure you have a good GPS signal before you can run.
Another issue, although minor, I didn't see where to enter the track/road/trail or the shoes option.

I swear I wasn't drunk during the 2 runs. I ran in the same lane on an oval track and the GPS was all over the place.
Also, I started and ended in the same spot but it's not reflected on the map. It shows I stop early.
I bought the AT&T version yesterday, mainly as a running device, but also for the smart watch perks. I ran three miles this morning and my experience was terrible.
I left my phone at home, turned off all connections on the watch except for GPS. I brought along my Garmin Forerunner that I've had for almost six years that has been reliably accurate.
It took a good 3-5 minutes for the GPS to initially lock on (I assume the location icon turning solid means it's locked on). I started down my street, which is residential houses with little tree coverage. By the time my Garmin said .40 miles, my S2 said .20 miles. So I decided to try in cycling mode, which I've seen recommended somewhere (running supposedly uses the pedometer instead of GPS for distance).
After switching to the cycling mode, distance seemed to be much more accurate but pace was being difficult. When I swiped to go to the pace screen, the GPS symbol was usually blinking and pace was blank. After a couple seconds, pace would kick in and start trying to match my current pace. Again, the Garmin does this much quicker with varying speeds.
I switched to the Nike Run app and that's just a terrible interface, even worse than the Shealth.
Not only is the GPS tracking pretty bad, but my general experience with the interface was terrible. I have the always on screen mode set to on. The screen of course goes back to ambient mode when the watch is in a certain position. Most of the time when trying to read my stats, the screen wouldn't go to the on the mode, so I would have to touch the screen or spin the dial to get it to turn on (I was also pushing my son in a stroller today, which made it more difficult). On top of that, I have to then scroll to whatever data screen I want to look at. All that screen space and they can only put one stat on each screen.
The Nike app was even worse because I can't even manually change what data I'm looking at. I have to wait for it to scroll through, which IMO, is pretty dangerous is you're running by traffic.
Overall, the experience was just terrible. It's going back to AT&T. I really wanted to like this device, but can't. It was actually great as a smart watch and I really like the look. Unfortunately, the running experience is a complete deal breaker.
Welp, I contacted Nike support Friday and thought I was on the right track, told them everything that was going on and they said their engineer was going to look into it. Yesterday they wrote me and said it's a Samsung problem. I contacted Samsungs support and they are telling me that it's Nike's problem. Samsung also said it's a 3rd party app, which it is, but there is not a way to uninstall it. It came loaded with the watch. I've tried to reinstall the Nike app before to try to fix the problem but it doesn't show up on the uninstall list.
I just love it when they pass the blame back to each other while I'm sitting here with my $350 GPS watch that doesn't work correctly.
I used the built-in S Health app and the map of my run was messed up too, so that rules out Nike's app as being the culprit.
I am sending the watch back to Samsung so they can run diagnostics on it. I'll have it back in a couple of weeks then I'll give it another shot.
GPS inaccuracy?
I just got my new Gear S2 from T-Mobile (3G version) today and did a 5KM running and some walking. I also carried my Galaxy S4 with runkeeper on it. Nike+ app on Gear S2 showed me at 4.9KM. Also as I was running I looked at the watch to see my current distance, but it wasn't updating the current distance instantly. I am very upset for this. Basically I needed a solid GPS watch with phone capability. Do you know if the GPS chip is not good enough or is it a software issue?

To kick it off:
1) Heart rate sensor is more miss than hit. I see a lot of 'clean the sensor and move it backward' messages. Nonsense of course, it should just work.
2) Floor count is totally 1000% off. Today I climbed well over 20 stairs (3-4 meter stairs) and the S3 indicates a glorious total of 3. Yes THREE Samsung, 3.
3) Altitude meter tells me I live 16 meters below sea level. I live in Amsterdam which is 3 meters below (really). But it gets better. During my yesterday's run it registered an elevation of -112 meter.
4) Messages from the phone do not always arrive on the S3. Maybe aliens interfere but that's unlikely so Samsung, please fix this. nr 1 missed is GMail, then Whatsapp.
5) This is not a bug but I would really like to see an option to permanently disable this watch as a Bluetooth device to take phone calls. I have my car for that, or my phone. Not the stupid watch.
OK, over to you guys, bring it on!
For your point 5, I think you can do this in the bluetooth settings for the watch on the phone - just turn off 'call audio'. NB: I have not tried this...

I was able to get it to stick permanently by repairing my car bluetooth and setting it to Phone Calls while having the watch disabled.
I'll try it again tomorrow, who knows!

Regarding #4: are you using AOD? If not, try using AOD and see if your notifications are more consistent.
PLS give me options for Google maps directions. I need nothing more than the direction arrows on the watch. No map needed. Anyway screen is too small for that. Just xxx meter +arrow

edit. I have found possible solution for the nav arrows Directions gears s2, which works with google maps.
Both on Phone and on gear an app is needed.

Tried both ways, Calibrate known height and altimeter.
Googling this there are loads of S2 complaints regarding this, I guess this is not much improved.
most people complaining about altimeter don't know how a barometer works
also the best altimeter based on atmosferic pressure must be calibrated every time is possible to give good results
when the weather change a variation in pressure can be of 3-5 Hpa in 30 minutes and on altimeter more than 50m
weather change is a storm but also a fairy wind
when s3 measure a floor it register a .3 Hpa variation that must be in 5 to 20 sec
also a slap on the watch can be seen as a floor and the immersion in 50 cm of water can be 10 floors and also a shower and a storm
after a shower o a swimming pool the barometer is out of order for hours
samsung is most of times a good tech but can't do miracles

It is a good thing to do. However it's based on barometric pressure so really doesn't matter that much. The key is to do it near something you know has a known elevation that way you know if it's correct. Like a sign in a national park or something that tells you, "you are at such and such El. ..."
BTW, a lot of you take things too seriously on this device. It's a watch, as long as the time is accurate all else are fun gimmicky gadgets for your wrist. If serious accuracy of data is important to you, buy the right tool for the job. It's like owning a repair business and trying to run it using a Leatherman tool.
Well, I live in Amsterdam, pressure has been 1027 hpa all day, we're at 3m below sea-level but the watch is all over the place and I've calibrated it like 209 times. Hasn't been wet, smacked, dropped. It's a watch with a barometer that's not too good.

1. hair, tattoo, excessive sweat, a large band can and will interfere with HR
2. floors / stairs / floors / stairs / verdieping / trap (used GT for dutch) -- or maybe you're trying to tell something else because 20 stairs are relatively close to 3 floors
3. atmospheric pressure is pretty unstable even at known sea levels and when is taken into account for altitude can be messy
4. I don't know, it never happened to me but it could be an issue I suppose
5. connections, disconnect BT

When wanting to look at widgets from the clock face the bezel it turned clockwise - but the display animation rotates anti clockwise
The opposite is true to see notifications.
This just seems wrong to me and I often turn the bezel the wrong way.
I cant see Samsung changing the default behavior and I am starting to get used to it but an option to make it work 'correctly for my head' would be nice.
Hey guys, I did a full test of the gear s3 heart rate against my chest strap and Apple Watch 2 Nike. I did indoor running and indoor biking for three days. My findings are that it's almost perfect, with 2 or 3 bpms difference with my chest strap. This difference is not always, some most of the time gear s3 was matching my chest strap. The Apple Watch was good too.
Method: chest strap + wahoo iPhone app. Gear s3 below my wrist ( this is key, when you find the sweet spot, it's super accurate) + s-health on iPhone. Apple Watch + workouts app.
Let me know your findings!

It does.
It should only count arm movements combined with forward motion but it also incidentally counts just arm movements. Plus, this morning, it showed 54 steps when I picked it up from the drawer. Obviously it should have been zero.
Than again, on a full day it's pretty good, about the same as my Pebble Time Steel (which I compared it with over the weekend).

Floor count?

I've had my Gear for about 10 days and have piled up over 12000 steps each day, but have only been credited with 1 floor climbed. My house has 3 stories so I'm pretty sure that total should be closer to 100. Anyone else having this issue?

LOL, all I could thing of was Seinfeld when I read your response. "How's this? Or this?" "You seem to be getting the hang of it." Seriously, though, I deliberately hold the rail with the opposite hand when climbing stairs so that I can swing the one with the Gear on it. Still nothing. Not sure what's up. Any other ideas?
I walk up and down to the sixth floor at work a couple of times a day and typically that adds up to 2 or 3 floor. I have a 3 story house, same thing. The floor counter sucks...

If it is basing floors on the altimeter, that might explain the problem. The altimeter on this thing is trash. It's rarely within 100 feet of my actual elevation, even after a calibration. Doubt that can be fixed, but I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Thinks I'm riding a bike when I get in the car sometimes. Also the pace in S Health is way off. Not the best fitness tracker around but we don't have any other options.
Though not accurate; mine is working fine. I remember reading something like 'one floor is calculated as approximately 3 metres'.
Can someone confirm this?

A reboot got it counting floors accurately again
Same problem. Altimeter has me at -6M! Fitbit shows 10 floors to S3 2 floors. Rubish
On the flip side of the problem - Mine detects elevator rides as stairs climbed.
I think it is the same "rules" as the FitBit I was wearing before the S3. They only register a floor if the flight of stairs consist of 10 continuous steps.
I have a split level house, two flights of 8 steps.
If I walk up one it doesn't register as a 'floor' but if I walk up both (as long as I don't delay on the landing) it increases my S3's floor count by 1 floor.
On my outside walks a steady climb up a hill does register floor counts as well.

Same issue for me too. Had the watch for about 3 weeks and very few floor counts
I've noticed the same as all, I get a very low stair count. I have one set of stairs in the house and I'm up and down them all day, but the count stays low. I had a Fitbit that would give me a very accurate count of my stairs. I've turned off floor count since it's almost useless.

Yeah it's not accurate at all....I get less than 5 floors a day and I have 2 stair wells at home which I dash through hourly...It's flawed for sure.

I've been trying out different functions; floor count is definitely buggy, so is the heart rate monitor especially when you are working out, the distance counter too counted an extra 1 kilometre on my run, the Calorie counter is also buggy for Other Workout option as it confuses vigorous and moderate intensity.
I've tried turning it on and off, I've tried cleaning the ram, I've tried swinging mu arms, I've tried to walk slower and faster but it's still there. I would send an email to S Health, but they'll like send me to another guy and ask me to detail it again, and I'm jist too lazy.
To be honnest, all the sensors on the GEAR S3 are totally screwed up.
Floor count, steps, heart rate, altimeter, barometer all terrible. The most inccurate looks to be the altimeter. Staying in my house for a week, altimeter fluctuate between -71m and +70m... USELESS! Not too sure if a firmware upgrade can fix those sensors or if they are low cost pieces of crap. Will see... or not

Step counter not accurate

Hi there,
having my Gear S2 now for quite a while I realiszd that the step counter is massively over counting compared to other devices ( FitBit and Apple smart watch and others). Just by going from bedroom to bathroom, brushing my teeth (with my other hand) it counts 300 steps while i have done mostly 10 ! Comparing it over the whole day compared to my fitbit it easily shows 20% more than actually walked.
Anybody with similar problems? Any ideas what is wrong? Rebooted a few times, still same problem.
