Once I had an HTC Touch HD, running Windows Mobile. Windows Mobile had the option of calling anonymous unless the called number is in the contacts. On later smartphones, using Android, I have used the app Prefixer, to achieve the same result. Prefixer can add the prefix *31# to numbers I call from my contacts. That way calls are made anonymous, unless the number called is in my contacts.
Recently I switched to another carrier, and Prefixer is no longer working. Even manually adding the prefix to a number does not work. If I dial for example *31#0123456789 the phone app is only showing 0123456789. I don't know if this is normal, or that the prefix should be shown.
I can't directly contact the provider's customer service, because I now have a contract via my employer. Before I try to do that anyhow, I would like to ask the question here first: is the problem caused by network configuration of my current provider (or the SIM card)? Or is there a setting in Android that I missed, that disables a prefix to be sent when calling a number?

The carrier has enabled it. Problem solved.

Anyone using, or planning to use, the HTC Touch Cruise on the UK T-Mobile network will very probably need to do a special setup on their device to get voicemail access working properly.
The symptom is that your callers will be able to leave you voicemail messages but you will not be able to pick them up from your phone. When you get a voicemail message you will get the notification but when you press the soft key to access voicemail it will dial the number but you will then get an error message saying "access to this number is barred" and the system will hang up on you.
If you try accessing voicemail by holding down the "1" key or by explicitly dialing the voicemail access number retrieved from the network (probably of the form "+44050<your mobile number minus the leading zero>" or ""+44068<your mobile number minus the leading zero>") you will get the same message. Dialing 222 will work but will also initiate a voicemail setup message each time and however many times you switch your phone on and off to reload the voicemail settings from the network it still won't work.
I just spent 2 days with the very helpful T-Mobile support to sort this out, ultimately getting escalated up two levels in the technical support group, until I got someone who recognised the problem.
The issue is simple to resolve. The problem is that the format of the voicemail access number that the T-Mobile UK network pushes down to the handset is incompatible with the HTC software on the Touch Cruise (and maybe other devices too). The thing the software doesn't like is the "+" at the beginning.
To fix it go to the Settings/Personal/Phone application and click the second tab ("Services"). Now select "Voice Mail and Text Messages" and click "Get Settings...". You should now see a screen with two access numbers populated, one for voicemail and the other for text messages. Both will probably start with "+44". The text message access number is OK so don't mess with that but the voicemail access number won't work with the UK network. Simply replace the "+" with "00" and click OK and then your voicemail should work as you expect.
I haven't tried accessing voicemail outside the UK so it is possible that the above might break your access when roaming and you might need to edit back the "+" when travelling. I'd be interested in knowing if anyone has any experience with non-UK access and a "0044..." setting rather than the default "+44...", does it dial the UK access number OK?
(Actually, I never looked at the mechanics of accessing voicemail outside the UK, does it still dial the UK number or does the host network automatically push an alternate local access number to your phone when you register with the network?)

Nice on Julian. I bought an Orbit 2 on O2, but my number doesn't transfer to O2 for few days yet, so have been using my T-Mobile SIM, and also experiencing this problem.
Thanks for sharing the tip!
I'm on UK T-Mob Web&Walk. Switched the +44 entry to 0044...but my TC then coundn't send texts. Switched it back and fortunately can still access voicemail as well as send texts. Strange.
I'm with T-mobile running an old T-mobile sim card on my new TC, when first called voice mail it gave me a long introduction then said "turn of your mobile off and on again to not get this messages again", I turned TC to "air plain mode" back to on mode and everything was cool from there on.
It seems that not everyone have that problem OR T-mobile has sort out that problem after Julian told them about the problem. In any case, thanks Julian to share this with us.
PS (today after reading this post is the first time that I use voice mail with my new TC)
Similar problem on WM 6.5 Asus Crystal
I had exactly this problem with T-Mobile and WM 6.5.
T-Mobile technical support was excellent, ringing back on several occasions to ensure that the problem was fixed, even though my handset is not a supported model. Once I was put through to 2nd layer support they fixed it in seconds.
In a nutshell, if you text and voice service centre numbers begin with a +44......, change them to 0044......
This did not happen on my XDA Exec WM5.0, so appears to be a new thing in WM6.5?
Is there a way for you to intercept a sms text message by knowing that person phone number
I've seen phantom SMS messages and voicemail notifications come through on a phone without being hooked up with service.
The phone must be made for that specific carrier and programmed with that user's CTN and MSID and PRL updated on that carrier.
I've only seen this on CDMA service.
Otherwise I'm pretty sure there's not a way to receive other people's SMS. Although there could be some software program out there that does it. But it would have to be installed on that specific phone to work.

I just downloaded the Android Google Voice app onto my newly Rooted (UnRevoked. Thank you ) Evo 4g.
Everything is seamless, But I noticed that the app issued a new GV number, so I didn't have to use my existing GV number which I have had for a few months.
I would have liked to substitute the newly issued GV number for the GV number I have been using.
One thing I noticed though is that if I dial the newly issued GV number via the keypad, I get a message that says
"We could not complete your call. Please try again."
It appears that the GV number which was immediately issued by downloading the Android application can only be utilized directly through the application.
I would like to use my previous GV# number with the seamless Android GV application. Is this possible?
Also, I have not read anywhere that the Android GV# app issues a new GV # upon downloading.
That seems odd. Did you log into your google profile when setting up the app?

No. I just downloaded the application, and I got a menu with a few settings, But the new GV# was in the application already. I thought there would be place to enter my existing GV#, as i had no idea a new GV# would be issued. But no access on my pc like my original GV#. I have searched the web before posting, and I cannot find any info regarding this.
I will log into my previous GV account and see which GV# is there.
When i dial a number from my Evo, the screens I get are >>
1) a prompt asking if i want to dial using GV or not
2) a prompt that says dialing number using GV
The Android GV application version is 0.4.2.13
I just removed the Google voice app and reinstalled it n my Evo.
My gmail acct synced to Google Voice.
When I make an outgoing call, I see the following on the screen >
Calling via Google Voice (and the following number >)
*** 227 2000
The same number as before BUT not my original GV # previous;y issued months ago.
This '2000' number may be a generic number that GV uses to access Your Existing GV #
It showed up the 2x I downloaded the Android GV app, so it cannot be a GV#.
It is used to access your previously individually issued GV number it seems.
My question is that I have Pick Any 3 Numbers on my Acct. Which GV # do I use as one of the 3 numbers?
-My original GV# issued months ago?
-or the 'generic' '2000' number?
I would rather my original GV number, but I want to make sure the app is utilizing my originally issued GV# as the outgoing number for obvious reasons.
If there is a conflict with this 'Access' 2000# and my GV#, I will just manually input my GV# and bypass the GV App even though it is seamless.
I just found this >>
I use my iPhone 4 to connect to the Google Voice website. When I make a call through there the number I'm connected to is +1-(347)-227-2000. What is this number?
I would've expected to see my own Google Voice number appear or even the number I'm being connected to, but not that number. It was quite unexpected.
Thanks in advance for the reply.

The GV mobile web app initiates calls by dialing a Google access number, which it uses to connect to your contact.
The number you note is likely that number. Your GV number will still show as Caller ID.
From the above, I am still confused as to which number I would use as one of my Pick 3 Any Numbers?
I get a feeling that I should not use the app and input my GV# Manually, to be assured it is being used as one of my Pick3 Any Number's.
What are your thoughts, and if anyone knows for sure, please let me know.
Unistall the new gv app, and use google voice 3.4... That one uses the same number each time to dial out... U can then use/pick that number for one of ur 3 favs or sprint to home numbers... Thats what I had to do!
I had a similar problem when I installed the app. I was part of google voice when it was beta, so I figured that's why it issued the new number, but I would def log into your account from a desktop and check. You also need to dial a special number to provision the phone for voice mail. In call settings

The generic # that GV uses with the version I downloaded is the ***-227-2000 number. So with the new version you are talking about, it most likely uses another Generic GV access number so I am unsure if this generic number works regarding pick 3 number not being billed, or if it comes off your anytime minutes?
I may just use my personal GV number I have had for months and forgo the app on Android.

I am unclear what you mean regarding provisioning speed dial for voice mail re the app. I saw the option regarding using GV voice mail app or native. Is that what u mean?
Hi,
I bought a T-Mobile HTC 8X in the US, unlocked it and brought it back with me to Israel. Now, when Israeli contacts call me, their numbers appear as (for example) 050 555 5555. When they text me, the number shows up as +97250 555 5555. For some reason the phone isn't able to tell that those two are the same number. I couldn't find anything while looking through the settings. I tried playing around with regions and all and came up with nothing. My old AT&T Focus had no issues and my dad's British 8S is working fine as well.
If I remember correctly, In WP7 deivces there's a registry setting which allows to control how many digits from the right identify the number as unique. However, I couldn't find a registry editor for the 8X (is there any?) so that information won't help me right now.
So now, my caller ID function sucks and the only way to actually ID contacts is to save 2 numbers for each one... really frustrating.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks!
Eyal
HTC support emailed back
And after sending them my IMEI they said that unfortunately there's nothing they can do and T-Mobile phones show that symptom in places like Israel and Europe.
So, it's either selling it on ebay or waiting for a registry editor or flashing it with a new ROM somehow. Option #1 seems like the most realistic one at the moment. This really sux.

Actually, if I remember correctly from my previous experience with unlocked phones, most true Caller-ID (where the phone can identify who is calling even if they AREN'T in your Contacts list) requires XML code embedded in the phone (somewhere, don't ask me where) by the provider. Some providers use the same frameworks, so it's possible to get it working from network to network, but in most cases no.
I've never seen a situation tho, where it couldn't pick up the name from the Contacts list, based on the number coming in. I seem to remember you can turn on a feature called "International Dialing Help" that might bring them both together. OR put the entire phone number in your contacts. (As it is displayed when it comes in on Text).

I tried saving the entire number, but because local Israeli numbers get an extra "0" the phone is not able to ID them. Local call comes in as 050-5555555. SMS, like an intl. call, comes in as +97250-5555555. The "International Dialing Help" really helps when you're dialing. I thought it would fix the caller-id issue but it doesn't.
I spoke with HTC and with WP8 support on twitter. It's a known issue for T-mo phones and according to WP8 support, it has been forwarded to the appropriate team which probably means it'll be fixed in months to come. Until then, the only option is to get the phone flashed by one of the Israeli carriers with the Israeli version of the OS.
Hi all. I originally installed WhatsApp on my cell phone several years ago and registered using my landline number instead of my cell number and have been using it without any issues. Now I need to download and use the “WhatsApp Business” app, on the same cell phone, and I need to register with my landline number, so I have the following newbie questions:
Do I first use the “change number” tool to use my real mobile number on the personal WhatsApp account?
Then, do I need to inform each of my personal contacts of the new phone number change, or does this happen automatically?
Then, do I just install the “WhatsApp Business” app on the same cell phone and register using the old landline number?
I have read several tutorials on changing SIM’s, and/or phone numbers, and/or phones, and what happens to your chats in each case but they always refer to registering using your cell number (like most normal people would do), but I am not sure if they also apply to my situation.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
You want to use two different accounts with the same number. That's not going to be possible.

Actually, no. Right now the personal acct is registered to the landline # so I need to change that to register it with my mobile # instead. Then install WA Business and register it with the now available landline #.
