So I've been following a few guides and tutorials here trying to get my Kindle Fire closer to a stock Android experience, and am very pleased with the results. If you just received yours, DO NOT LET IT GO ONLINE at any costs before disabling auto-updates, because it's only possible to uninstall system apps on FireOS 5.4.0 and lower (luckily got mine with 5.3.3 in it). As the title states, ROOT ISN'T REQUIRED. I've done this on an HD8, but have been informed that it should also work with the HD10 (which is now rooted,).
I removed pretty much everything Amazon, except for the shopping app, camera and calculator. Everything else works as expected on a snappy Android tablet.
Proceed with the following steps in order:
1) As soon as you first turn your tablet on, SKIP REGISTRATION and don't connect it to your router;
2) Open "Settings", go to "Device Options", click "Serial Number" about 7 times until "Developer Options" become enabled, go into it and "Enable ADB";
3) Go back to "Settings", "Security" and enable "Apps from Unknown Sources";
4) Connect your tablet to your pc and open an ADB Shell;
5) Paste the following commands in your shell to start uninstalling:
Code:
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.device.software.ota
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.kindle.otter.oobe.forced.ota
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.settings.systemupdates

You should see a message stating "Success" after every package is successfully uninstalled for "user 0" (they're still in there if you do a factory reset, so in this case you have to repeat the whole process to avoid updating, but they're removed for the current user).
6) At this point it should be safe to go online. Reboot to recovery, wipe cache and restart, and then connect to your router. Your home button won't work at this point, but the process is straight forward enough so you won't need it for a while;
7) Open your "Silk Browser" that shouldn't have been uninstalled yet. Use the guide in this page and get "Play Store" up and running;
8) Open "Play Store", install "No-Root Firewall" to control who or what goes online, install Firefox (or your preferred browser) and continue setting up through it just to avoid exposing our process too much, since Amazon tracks Silk navigation in their "optimization" processes!
9) Open Firefox from the notifications bar (remember, your home button still doesn't work so don't mess up clicking around), and download and install apks for "Trebuchet" from here and "Launcher Hijack" from here. I prefer using this ported version of Trebuchet instead of "Nova" or "Evie", firstly because it's the one from Lineage 15.1, pretty, light and fast, and secondly because it isn't tracking anything or sending any collected info to any server, just as a launcher should. Open "Launcher Hijack" from the notification bar, configure "Trebuchet" to be your launcher, and your home button will regain functionality;
10) Reboot to recovery, wipe cache and restart, and we'll have another round of uninstalling:
Code:
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.cloud9
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.cloud9.kids
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.firelauncher
Notice we've done away with "Silk Browser" and the infamous "Fire Launcher". Reboot to recovery, wipe cache and restart once more to see you only have one launcher;
11) Last round of uninstalling (for some reason, some of these wouldn't go away in the earlier rounds):
Code:
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.kindle.unifiedSearch
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.alta.h2clientservice
pm uninstall --user 0 com.here.odnp.service
pm uninstall —-user 0 com.amazon.kindleautomatictimezone
pm uninstall -—user 0 com.amazon.bluetoothinternals
12) I've kept a tiny bit of Amazon software behind, you can do away with it if you please (just make sure to install "GBoard" or another keyboard from the Play Store before removing the standard one):
Code:
# Fire Standard Keyboard
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.redstone
# Amazon System WebView
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.webview.chromium
# Shop Amazon
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.windowshop
# Calendar Storage
pm uninstall --user 0 com.android.providers.calendar
# Contacts Storage
pm uninstall --user 0 com.android.providers.contacts
# Calculator
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.calculator
# Camera
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.camera
# Contact Sync Adapter
pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.dp.contacts
That's it! The end result should be very close to stock feeling, debloated. I keep "No-Root Firewall" just to make sure I choose what goes online and when. At the moment of writing, there's just one single remaining service full of permissions called "amazon.fireos" that tries to phone home infrequently, but that one you can't uninstall without going into a bootloop...
Most of the info was compiled and tested with support from the following thread, so thanks go to everyone who contributed. Special thanks go to DragonFire1024 for all the work he's put into Fire devices
If you remove whispersync, doesn't that mean that your books progress will no longer sync with Amazon servers?

Yes, the way it's setup Amazon has no idea anymore of what goes on in your tablet. Ties are severed (Kindle app is disabled as well)...
Does it work with Fire OS 5.6.0.1?
So, if I do all of this before I go online, will I still be able to get OS updates, security patches, etc? I'd like to avoid rooting, I'd like to avoid being forced to send a bunch of telemetry, but I'd also like to avoid being stuck on an old kernel forever...

not to be all negative but you should read the thread about if amazon will update, you are worried about something that may never happen
You should clean the garbage and then if amazon DOES release anything you can just flash over it and get your updates manually

I haven't actually even gotten the thing yet -- I won one (funny how often I see that in this forum, guess companies like finding "prizes" that sound good on paper and cost them less than a nice dinner...) and am trying to figure out if I should bother keeping it or press for a cash / gift-card alternative. I'll keep that in mind, though.

If you want a low end decent 10" tablet there is no equal to the amazon. Nothing comes close, that said its not an ipad and never will be, ipads are the next step up even but they run $300+ for the cheapest models.

We went through an Apple phase, but that's long gone. I pick my phones to be as close as practical to stock Android, and always prioritize lean / fast over bells and whistles. I know that for the price, the Fire tablets are well regarded, but if there's anything I can do to trim the fat, I'd like to try. As I say, I haven't gotten hands on it yet, so maybe it won't be as slow as I expect, but after my recent experience with a Fire TV Stick (best summarized as "entirely unusable performance") I'm pretty wary.

All depends on what your using it for, I am not a gamer so cannot tell you anything about gaming performance you couldn't google, that said I do use it a lot for checking messages on xda and email and the like, I also use it with a bt keyboard and teamview to my home pc on occasion, but primarily I use it as a media device.
I have all kinds of streaming based stuff on it and in that capacity it works really really well. The screen is bright and crisp and while I had seen reports of others having some wifi issues I personally have not experienced any. That said i have implemented dragons framework fixes and am running retyre's image that is rooted, ota blocked and has xposed baked in.
I got mine on sale for $100 and couldn't be happier with my purchase.
Once again, ties are severed for the current user, no OTA, not even usage statistics get sent back and forth over their servers. If you happen to change your mind and want to hand them control of your tablet again, all you have to do is do a factory reset and connect to the internet after booting and it will update itself (but you will then be stuck with all the bloatware until you're able to root).
Is there a way to add Prime Video back after running the commands and de-bloating?
I'd rather not factory reset just for the one app.

Sorry man, if you want to keep Prime Video you have to avoid running the commands for removing it, otherwise you do have to do a factory reset... That's the problem with this method, there's no undoing anything once you get things done...

Could you not just install prime video from the play store.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using Tapatalk
Unfortunately no, every app that's been pre installed fails if removed and installed from another source. You could try and report here maybe, but it doesn't seem to work...
I would if I could. I'm on 5.6.1.0, so none of these tutorials work for me. I'm waiting for root until I hack my tablet.

Can you clarify which command removed Prime Video? There aren't any notes and I didn't see any commands that obviously affect Prime Video (skimmed the commands for anything that said "video). Also are there services tied to Prime Video? That would explain why I can't add it back from the Play Store or via APK.
I'm going to Factory reset and try to only remove apps I don't want instead of running everything.

You most likely can't restore because native Amazon apps cannot be installed from other sources... Even an update to anything via Play Store breaks them... I didn't go through this process carefully removing selected apps for two main reasons:
1) whatever you have to leave behind may be a backdoor for them (there are serious permission issues, every third service is able to create user profiles and so on);
2) since we are removing the possibility of updating anything, whatever you leave behind has numbered days, all it takes is a simple version update from their end that we will not be able to accept.
I'll browse through the thread referenced in the OP and I'll get back to you. You'll have to experiment with removing other services carefully though... Just make sure to kill all of the OTA related stuff to not lose your tablet over Prime Video (their bloatware is really really obnoxious, I was stuck on 5.6.0.0 on another unit...).
@kenijo I hope you're ok with me cross-referencing your post, thanks for the way you organized the information!

@063_XOBX I suspect you'd have to leave behind the following packages:
com.amazon.alta.h2clientservice
com.amazon.avod
com.amazon.h2settingsfortablet
com.amazon.kindle.otter.settings
com.amazon.parentalcontrols
com.amazon.pm
If you'd like to help the others and test a bit, I recommend trying to get rid of the H2 packages, parental controls and com.amazon.pm as well... If it stops working, I suspect leaving all of the above behind should keep Prime Video functioning...
This should be stickied, got hd8 for $30 used prime day and hope i can get rid of everything.
I have an Exynos variant of S10e, currently on ASIG. I wanted to disable this app from the Settings but the option is grayed out (for both instances cuz there are 2 different for this app). So i searched it in Play Store, but uninstalling keeps running for a day now and nothing happens. Found the app in Galaxy Store but can't find the option to uninstall from there.

Did you happen to update the phone recently? I also noticed the Your Phone Companion app afterward and can't uninstall it. Perhaps Microsoft had some sort of partnership with Samsung.

Yup, updated few days ago. I used adb to uninstall both instances. Take a look at the reviews on galaxy store.... This app is useless. Can't even get it to work until today but it's just useless.
I noticed this as well - it's not just for the S10e, but also the regular S10. Samsung has integrated the "Your Phone Companion" app into the top menu "Link to Windows" button.
samsung.com/za/support/mobile-devices/i-cant-find-the-your-phone-companion-app-icon-in-my-app-list-after-updating-it-on-galaxy-s10es10s10-device/ (I can't post links here so I removed the leading url info)
I would be fine with this but I can't uninstall or disable (or even End Task) on Your Phone Companion and it's causing an issue with my incoming SMS photos. If someone sends me a photo and I have wifi enabled, Your Phone Companion and Messages app try and access the photo at the same time and Messages refuses to download it (causing a permissions issue or a lock issue on the incoming file). If I disable my wifi and go to data only, the SMS photos come in no problem. This issue started when I enabled "Your Phone Companion" and downloaded the most recent version from the Google Play store.

Just turn off "Link to Windows" if you don't use it or it's causing issues when connected to the PC.
This garbage appeared on my phone with the Android 10 update. Can't be uninstalled, can't be disabled. Why does Microsoft get to install crap on my Samsung android phone? Hey Samsung! Make it go away!
I went to app settings of 'Link to Windows Service' and changed 'Allow Background Activity' to off (restricted), and the 'Your Phone Companion' app disappeared from my App list (after I previously had uninstalled updates to it and forced stop - which still left it in the app list). However, was still somewhere in some battery setting that I can't find anymore. I also turned off Allow background data usage for 'Link to Windows Service'. I hope I have effectively neutralized it. these two apps. I only wasted probably over an hour when my Windows 10 recently updated and lured me into trying to sync my PC with my Galaxy S10 cell phone (Verizon), via Your Phone Companion, which I really didn't need -- of course, it did not work and got hung at 90% installed, and now I've wasted more time trying to uninstall it. Thanks everyone for writing in and at least giving me a fighting chance at getting rid of it....
Why cant you all just use adb to disable? Here is link to explain..
https://www.xda-developers.com/disable-system-app-bloatware-android/
In powershell for example youll use this command....
.\adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.microsoft.appmanager
Of course, remember to have developer options and usb debugging turned on. Do this and its disabled. Hope this helps. Good luck!
I have a long list of apps I adb the hell out, never leave home without!

Sure, here ya go!
I run this from a Linux (Manjaro) computer.
in terminal (adb must be installed)
adb shell;
# You could check installed packjages first
pm list packages | awk -F ":" '{print $2}'
# But also just run this. It deletes on the safe side. Some lists I saw will ruin your phone so be carefull.

Galaxy S10e battery *really* that bad?
I followed every tutorial here and elsewhere to tweak my S10e (exynos version).
Debloated, sleep apps, power mode, brightness, etc etc
Still, the battery comsumption seems below expectations even for a small size battery.
Screen seems to be culprit, whenever doing anything with screen on I see the battery percentage drop in minutes.
I love the phone other than that. Any solution?
Any *unusual* tip about battery?
You should be able to squeeze out >5 hours of screen on time on WiFi and relatively light use. If it's much less there may be something wrong with your device. Alternatively a factory reset sometimes solves the issue. Debloating did not help much in my use case, turning on medium power saving mode did.
Average 4 hours SOT and... I am not a heavy user but need it a lot during the day
I think that is pretty normal if you e.g. listen to music for an hour or so and are on LTE/4G for a couple of hours a day. It's difficult to find a small phone with a long battery life. The Pixel 4a looks promising though.
Not too bad for an average. Texting, 3 email accounts synced, YouTube, Spotify, browsing forums and the web, reading e books, Facebook, a some light gaming. This is mixed use between wifi and 4g, AT&T Snapdragon version.
Not sure how much difference it makes, but in developer options turn off cell data when connected to wifi. Make sure you crank down that "display off" function to 15 seconds. Check also nothing is waking your phone every time you get a message or email.
If you want to get real advanced, tweak some of these settings with Tasker. I have display timeout set to 10 minutes when using, and back to 15 seconds when I set it down. You could do the same thing with screen brightness if that's your big issue.
I don't use aggressive battery settings or power saving features, at all, but I do use adaptive brightness. I get 9-10 hours SOT (granted, I have snapdragon not xynos). I easily get a day of mixed use, and then charge every night.
---------- Post added at 10:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:09 PM ----------
My issue is, when my battery gets down to around 15%, it goes dead within minutes. So I'm not getting good readings on the lower end. I've done the drain completely and re-charge completely - any other suggestions?

Hello. Thank you.
But are you sure?? I see 'camera service' and others that seem necessary....
It might help if you would list what the services you are recommending to uninstall actually do. This way people could decide which ones they need and which they don't.
If you can't [instead] rename the files, definitely archive a copy before wiping it from your device forever.

FWIW, I've been watching the Samsung Members community, and the battery life complaints always seem to come from the Exynos users, not so much the Snapdragon users. And it's usually after some firmware update.

I had best battery live on G9700 with Android 9.
Battery with Android 10 and around April 2020 updates was really bad.
Currently it's ok.
Get information from Exynos community that with September 2020 updates it getting better. Sure they improved the performance of the Exynos since release but never match the Snapdragon.

Yeah, that's my feeling, too. Around April 2020, it got really bad, but it's better again since the September update. With about 1.5h of SOT & 3 hours of listening to podcasts through the speakers, I end up with 50% battery remaining at the end of the day now, but for a few months it would be down to 15-20% at the end of the day

I have reset my phone and after resetting I have removed most of the samsung apps and never signed into samsung account. Just using google apps only. The battery is better now but still up to 4.30 hrs of screen on time.

ok thanks, I will also reset my phone after One UI 3.0... Another side effect of the september update is that my vibration are now really weak even if I put it to max. Really strange behavior....
Greetings,
I decided to debloat my Samsung Note 20 Ultra phone of all the bloatware apps Samsung installs. I used the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) shell to perform this bloatware removal and the list shown below identifies all the Samsung bloatware app names which I used as a guide in my removal process.
Everything went perfectly except for the fact I mistakenly uninstalled DEX which is an app that allows me to connect my Note 20 Ultra to a monitor via an HDMI connection. Once the connection is established DEX would automatically start and magically generate a "Windows Like" desktop GUI on the monitor. In short, my DEX is no longer working in the same way it was working before I performed the debloat process.
I hope somebody in this community can identify to me which Samsung parent app from the list shown below is the DEX app subordinate to? Because my theory is the DEX app is hiding inside one of the parent apps shown below and what is not making it easy is how the word "DEX" is nowhere to be seen. Therefore, I hope somebody can tell me which of the Samsung apps shown below I should leave untouched so my DEX app remains operational.
Any tips welcome.

Dependencies, dependencies, dependencies... I can't spot it.
A lot of those apps sit there and do nothing unless needed. May have something to do with Samsung Pass. The names can be misleading as well.
Maybe try it from the other end; check Windows Event Viewer for error messages when connecting.
Thank you for the Windows Event Viewer tip. I have not been able to pinpoint the Samsung app I need to leave alone after spending a bunch of time on Google. Looks like I have no other option but to factory reset my phone and try this Windows Event Viewer approach you mention.
Lastly, I am curios to know after uninstalling a junk app like Facebook is there any chance it can get re-installed on my phone as part of a future Samsung update?
You didn't permanently uninstall it if it was factory loaded. I will not use that scumware.
This is the Package Disabler i use. Much easier to block crap and to correct mistakes on the fly.
It also has a interactive widget that lets you toggle selected apps on/off. Useful for troubleshooting.
It also does a neat trick that settings>apps can't do when clearing data, it leaves no null marks. Certain system apps can't have their data fully purged in Settings resulting in your only recourse being to factory reset to correct it.
Yearly fee, and they respond to emails in a timely manner.
I don't see anything listed that you removed either, and agree with @blackhawk that it is probably a dependency for DeX that you removed.
Instead of a factory reset, please try to troubleshoot by reinstalling each app on your list you think may be the dependency.
To reinstall apps via adb:
cmd package install-existing <package name>
Just in case, here's the DeX app files:
sec.android.desktopmode.uiservice
samsung.desktopsystemui
sec.android.app.desktoplauncher
sec.android.app.dexonpc
Good luck!
Thank you to all for your posts. Blackhawk I took a look at the "Package Disabler" app you recommend. I have not purchased it because the merchant is located in England and it seems the app I need which is named "Package Disabler Pro (Samsung+ CLOUD)" is sold under some kind of subscription plan which I do not like.
Nevertheless, I found an alternative app in this very forum called "15 seconds ADB Installer v1.4.3". The link is below:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...vers-15-seconds-adb-installer-v1-4-3.2588979/
I also found another app in the link below:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/tool-windows-tiny-adb-fastboot-august-2021.3944288/
I would appreciate it a lot if anybody in the community can comment on these apps. Is my Note20 Ultra compatible with either of these two apps?
I just want to make sure I'm using an app that is not going to cause any damage to my Note20 Ultra. Any advice welcome. Thank you for you time.
PD is [email protected] year for up to 3 devices. For the amount of trouble it saves, it's inconvenience, reliability and for real time troubleshooting it's worth it to me.
I usually toggle its widget or open the app a couple times a day.
As crazy as it sounds, the culprit is the service

Lol you couldn't see the Dex because of the forrest. Best not disable something unless you know what it does and if it has any dependencies. With a package disabler you can make changes on the fly. Makes it a easier, can be used for troubleshooting and repairs.
Hi All,
I have gone through 4 factory resets already because I keep messing up on what Samsung apps I need to leave alone, disable or uninstall in an effort to debloat my Note20 of all the bloatware Samsung installs.
Long story short, has anybody in this forum posted a validated debloat list that applies to the Note 20?
Below is the debloat list I'm following for Samsung apps. My hope is somebody in this community has posted a debloat list of what apps I need to leave alone and what apps are safe to disable or uninstall. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I don't think anyone can say what a definitive debloat list is, as no two people are going to agree on what constitutes bloat.
With that said, I'd recommend disabling vs uninstalling, it's a lot easier to roll back vs uninstalling.
There's several apps that are available for this (root & unrooted) & a desktop client that is easy to use.
This is what I use:
[TOOL] ADB AppControl 1.8.0 🚀 Ultimate App Manager & Debloat Tool + Tweaks
ADB AppControl 🚀 Root is not required. Works with any Android device. Can do almost everything you dreamed about with applications. ADB AppControl - the desktop program, that will allow you to easily manage applications on your android device...

Koliosis,
Thank you for your post. I have to admit this ADB AppControl app was not in my radar. I downloaded the free ZIP version which requires no direct installation to my Windows 10 OS.
I noticed there is an Extended Version that costs $7.00. Do I need to buy it if my goal is to debloat my Note20? Or does the free version also include the same debloating funtionality the Extended version comes equipped with?
I hope this app includes a feature that WARNS me what Samsung apps I should leave alone. Case in point, last week I disabled the Samsung Payment Services app using the command below:
pm disable-user --user 0 com.samsung.android.kgclient : Payment Services
This novice mistake caused my Note20 to lock up. I couldn't shut it down or do anything. The only thing that was displaying on the screen was the error message below:
Phone Locked
(3020)
Your phone is locked because Device Services was uninstalled without authorization
I seriously thought I bricked my phone using an app called "Minimal ADB and Fastboot". It's only after spending a lot of time researching this problem I was able to figure out the solution was to get my Note20 into RECOVERY MODE and then do a FACTORY RESET in RECOVERY MODE.
For this reason I created this post. I just want to find a Note20 Ultra debloat list that will inform me what apps I need to leave alone and not mess with in any way. As I mentioned, I thought disabling the Samsung Payment app would be safe, but it seriously messed up my phone. Therefore, it would be cool if this ADB AppControl app provides me WARNINGS for apps I should leave alone and not disable, or uninstall.
You should be able to debloat w/the free version. I had no issues & it gives you the option of disabling or uninstalling.
The paid version adds a few perks, one of them, I believe, is the ability to back up any uninstalled apps.
Also, it has a 4-step semi-auto suggested debloat list. The steps range from totally safe to highly risky. You can pick & choose very easily. Works on all Android devices, I've used it on Samsung, Motorola & the Pixel 6 Pro.
There are some debloat lists floating around. I use them as a guideline, but, I've never bought into anyone's list 100%.
If I want that level of debloat, I'll buy a phone that's rootable & put a custom ROM on it.....

Here's a debloat thread,you should be able to get some solid feedback from the membership:
