Retaining root - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Good evening.
OOS 9.5.5 just dropped for the OP7 Pro 5g UK.
I've done a quick search regarding how to retain root after flashing an OTA but there is nothing definitive. Could anyone shed some light?
I'm rooted using magisk and use TWRP.
Just downloaded the full OTA from the Oxygen Updater app but holding off flashing it as I don't want to lose root etc.
Thanks in advance.

Follow this but remove all your magisk modules before hand and then reinstall them (not reactivate)

Google pay error

Running stock ROM not rooted, getting this error? .. bootloader is unlocked though
Google has Google pay check for an unlocked bootloader. If you are unlocked it will fail, you do not have to be rooted just bootloader unlocked for Safteynet to fail. You might as well install Magisk and let it hide that you are unlocked and rooted if you wish to use Google Pay. If you do not want to root, then just relock the bootloader, JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE STOCK RECOVERY AND NO CUSTOM RECOVERY INSTALLED. Otherwise you will brick your device. Also, be aware that relocking your bootloader will wipe all internal data off the phone so backup any photos, files, anything of importance before relocking bootloader.

Strange... on my OP 6 with unlocked bootloader and Magisk root, Google Pay runs fine. And even Magisk Hide was not enabled for Google Pay (now it is).

What are you talking about? I've been using Magisk with passing safetynet since it came out a couple years ago. I just used Google Pay times today with no issues.
The issue is Google will fail Safetynet if you just have an unlocked bootloader and no magisk installed to pass the safetynet checks.

What I'm talking about is what I'm experiencing. I've magisk installed, Google Pay is ticket to magisk hide, along with other apps, and they all detect root

please dont give users the wrong impression
Magisk DOES hide it.
i have an unlocked bootloader, TWRP, MAGISK, and a custom kernel installed
and ive been using google pay for the past week without issues.
Why would I give users wrong impression? It's happening to me!!! Just because it doesn't happen to you or others then it cannot be true?
I've also an unlocked bootloader, TWRP and Magisk installed and Magisk is not hiding specific apps. Simple as that.

Then Magisk must not be installed properly. You must have done something wrong is all I can think of. I use Google pay 2-5 times a day without issue and on the OnePlus 6 since launch, zero issues.

Maybe delete the Magisk APK/zip you have and download a fresh copy then.

Done that, but made no difference. Just reading on another thread that it appears to be an issue for many.
Magisk Hide works fine out of the box (no alterations) with Google Pay for me.
Historically, when it fails it's because Magisk is out of date.
hallo dare, if you want help, post your Magisk Manager's landing page, then another of your test results. Past that, you should head over to the Magisk XDA thread.
Edit:
I guess I forgot to mention I am on the BETA channel - so not exactly without alteration.

Thanks Orito,
Yeah I'll do just that. Can you please post the magisk you flashed and I'll try it please.
I flashed the 16.4.
I'm running 16.42. In Magisk.
Open Magisk Manager.
Menu.
Settings.
Update Channel -> Beta
Check for Updates -> Enabled
Close Magisk Manager completely.
Reopen.

virtual xposed

I really really miss exposed and I really don't want to root as besides exposed I personally have no need to. I just can't seem to get virtual exposed up and running. Along with not finding and good hot to videos on YT. I get it installed and everything just no luck with actual installing module for some reason. TIA for all help or input
if you root with magisk there is a module for xposed framework but it looks old and it says it won't be updated and I haven't tried it

If I rooted I wouldn't need to run virtual or magisk I could just run Xposed. I just don't want to root as it's easier for OTA without root. Especially seeing how often updates are coming for this phone since it got released.

I understand your desire not to root, but the only downside to rooting wousl be security, and magisk keeps security intact. Edxposed (unoffical Xposed for Android P) works perfectly fine in magisk.10/10 would recommend. Plus magisk has methods for maintaining root after OTAs

I bought the unlocked model for root truly but I haven't rooted a phone in 3 years since my LG g3 and g4 and for some reason I can't seem to wrap my head around easiest and safest way to root the OP7 . Don't want to break it. Nicest phone I've ever owned.
There's a tool by the guy who maintains TWRP for the phone. It's called tool all in one and can unlock and root your phone with a simple GUI. OTAs are almost as simple as stock, just 2gig files instead of ~500mb. It's just download from oxygen updater, settings local install, TWRP retention script, Magisk inactive slot install, reboot

All that seems amazing and I love the tool kits made for other devices heck I remember rooting GB when it was a one click app just to root your device. Miss those days. I'll have to search more as you really lost me with this part.

Yes, but there's EdXposed which is compatible and works flawlessly with Safety net. Not all modules work but that's an Android Pie incompatibility issue, not an Xposed problem.

It was amazingly easy. You just enable developer option, select enable OEM unlocking, back everything up (the phone will get factory reset) and advanced reboot, hook it up to your computer, reboot to bootloader, and then fastboot OEM unlock, reboot your phone to make sure the warning appears and reinitialise the system (since your phone did just get reset), reboot to bootloader, fastboot boot twrp.img, optionally flash the twrp installer, and flash Magisk. Done. Rooted. After installing OTAs, but before rebooting, use the install to slot B option in Magisk manager.

I've been told you can, but I don't have one of those. Carriers are mostly irrelevant outside of the US (and I live outside of the US myself). I use the international, carrier agnostic model (1917).

Bootloader Lock after root [URGENT HELP NEEDED]

I have a rooted OnePlus 7 Pro running OOS 10.0.1 rooted with Magisk but everything is very glitchy and I probably did something wrong. WiFi doesn’t work, boot slot b is non functional, and I’m just done with root. I need help. How do I return COMPLETELY TO STOCK, and lock the bootloader and unroot without tripping safety net or bricking? OnePlus support said they could do nothing. Every post on XDA advises to never relock, but I don’t know what else to do. I’m new to this stuff. Thank you for your time.

If you manually flashed a patched boot.img, you probably just flashed in incompatible one (broken WiFi is a dead giveaway for this issue). Better to just boot TWRP, flash Magisk and let Magisk patch the boot.img.

Everything went through and I have my phone working again. But I have one last question... My phone was the GM1915 model and that's what's printed on the box. But now in settings the model number is listed as GM1917. What kind of issues, if any, will this cause? Or am I good to go?

If I ever go back to rooting in the future (I'm staying stock until I learn more about the technical stuff) this will be a life safer. Thanks!

Stopped receiving OTAs

hi folks, i was getting OTAs up to and including the january patch, but the feb and march ones haven't come up. i'm rooted on stock 10, previously was using this method of installing updates. but now, nothing. anyone else had this? nothing too controversial installed, magisk with active edge mod, systemless hosts+adaway, youtube vanced? obviously i can update and re-root via the factory images but just checking in here in case anyone has had this and has any easier ideas. cheers.
Same here. My OTA didn't come by 7th of February/March so I sideloaded. Was thinking maybe Google won't serve them if rooted or magisk or unlocked bootloader.

cool, thanks for the response, i guess that's my lot then. i assume i can
extract and magisk-patch the boot.img from the OTA
sideload the OTA
flash the patched boot.img
to retain root?
I never tried extract from OTA I used the full image. But I download both anyway.
My guide should cover it all. Look at the "Sideload the OTA" section..... https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-3a/how-to/how-to-root-pixel-3a-preferred-t3938783
Let me know if you have any issues or suggestions on how to make the guide better.

Look for Pixel flasher on XDA , allows you to update and everything will be as you had it afterwards. Simplest and easiest in my opinion. Been using for every update
Question, when updating using Pixel Flasher, do i have to tick the disable verity and disable verification when flashing for every update?

If you want those to stay disabled yes. If you don't do it and decide you want to disable them later on. You'll have to wipe again.

Thanks for sharing this video. But this also means this 'OTA Upgrade Guide' from Magisk website doesn't work with the Pixel devices/ Android 13? I was using the OnePlus 7T before since 2020 (to last month) and I think since then itself I was following the above mentioned official Magisk guide to update to the latest OOS OTA's and major Android firmware upgrades too to keep the data and also the root. So doesn't this official guide work anymore?

It's hit or miss as to whether installing to inactive slot via Magisk during an OTA update will work. Some have been successful while many others have not. But if you want to keep root while updating, I would suggest Pixel Flasher.

Definitely Pixel Flasher. Only took my 153 seconds to flash Feb update and booting up with all mod, root and data retained.
