[Resolved] How to force an app to NOT be in fullscreen or suggest me a non fullscreen paint-like - General Questions and Answers

Hello, I want to have something extremely simple yet I can't find a working way to have it: I just want to be able to solve some sudoku-like puzzles where I have to shade some cells using a paint bucket tool on png files just like on windows paint, but I want to see if wifi is available while doing so, but the irony is I struggled to find a paint-like that does such a simple thing, it's called PhotoSuite and the problem is that it hides the notification bar.
So do you know an alternative to this app ? Or a way to force the app to not be in fullscreen or at least show wifi signal on overlay (and if possible icon notification that may appear from a game telling me it's my turn to play) ? I tried a module of xposed but the problem is that with last stable or even experimental version the framework is still not installed after download and reboot. Bird bar, Smart Statusbar, Swipe status bar, "open notification bar", also don't do it. My phone is on android 4.1.2.

You cant expect everything to work with 4.1.2, 4.1.2 isn't really supported anymore, most of today's apps are for 4.4 and newer.
If you want to use current apps and software, may I suggest you upgrade to a more recent device that has at least 4.4 or 5.0. It doesn't have to be a new device, there are plenty of used devices with 4.4 and newer software.

Well xposed is actually something that works better, if not only, with android 4, so unless my phone specifically don't work with it for some reason it should have worked. But alternatively, I'm pretty sure there must be some very basic paint-like apps that works on my phone, actually I'm pretty sure some were made even for android 1 given how basic that is.
Since I really don't want much from my phone (I almost never went to the google play store) I don't want to buy a more recent one and the one I have doesn't have any custom rom to upgrade it, unlike a galaxy s I have (but it's way slower and have less ram).

There we go: I tried many other paint softwares, none did what I wanted, so instead I tried to make xposed framework work, it works perfectly on my older phone but on this one all I had to do was to check "Disabled resource hooks". I'm still surprised by the fact that it's way easier to force an app to be in fullscreen than to prevent it.

Plz don't make me learn how to decompile just to remove NavBar!

I've got a Razr Maxx HD running rooted but stock JB 4.1.1. All I want to do is remove (hide, disable, etc) the Navigation Bar that takes up the bottom of the screen. I'm a Button Savior guy so I've got a way to navigate without wasting that screen real estate.
I tried adding the line qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 to the bottom of my build.prop file (that worked great on my Nexus 7, BTW). That removes the NavBar but the wallpaper only covers part of the recovered screen area (the rest is either black or some other screen "bleeds" through) and it generates system.ui errors constantly.
I've tried several apps from Google Market (can't stand the name Play Store) but they all hide the Notification Bar on the top, too, and I want/need to see that.
I downloaded and installed an APK that was supposed to address this (can't find the file or remember the name) but all it did was automate adding the extra line to build.prop, resulting in the same problems.
I don't want to flash a custom ROM because, despite brilliant work by amazing devs, some of the still-missing features (camera, tethering, etc) are ones I need to have.
I use and like Go Launcher EX but I'd use another launcher if any of them had the feature to hide the NavBar but evidently none of them do.
The one thing I keep reading is that, if I decompile my frameworks-res.apk file, I can change a series of values that will make the NavBar disappear. I've read the instructions over and over and I just don't have confidence that I won't screw something up while trying to do this.
Is there ANY relatively straight-forward tool or app or setting that I've missed to get rid of the NavBar?

qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 in build.prop works fine for me I don't have any of the issues you mentionned

Really? Interesting. Do you have a stock ROM rather than CM10 or ParanoidAndroid or something like that (many custom ROMs make it easier to do the modify build.prop method)? Are you on 4.1.1 rather than a newer version of JellyBean (4.2 it out in some places, I believe)? If the answers to both those questions is yes, what did you use to root? I'd love to solve the problem and I hope to avoid decompiling and recompiling.

Stock rooted 4.1.2 I have an XT925 device so BL is unlocked but it shouldn't affect that mod... I wish paranoid android was available on this phone! Maybe its the 4.1.1 vs 4.1.2?

I wonder about 4.1.1 vs 4.1.2. Is that an OTA update being pushed out over time or a function of the difference between the XT925 and the XT926 (Razr HD and Razr Maxx HD, as I understand it)?
Digesting all I can as quickly as I can about all this. XT925 is an International version and XT926 is a US version of the same phone? I still can't figure out why some Maxx HDs have 4.1.2 and some do not (having "only" 4.1.1 instead).

I've used this program by tsorn . Problem is that most solutions from the app store that work on 4.1.1 disable the notification shade as well. Gestures and launcher shortcuts to the notifications shade will not either.

well are you on a rom? i can remove the softkeys for you if its deoxed. dont want to have a chance of messing anything up
No, unfortunately I'm on 4.1.1 stock much like OP for the same reasons (tether/camera etc). It wouldn't be a problem if I was on alt roms since I have found apks that disable just the navbar and leave the notification shade. Problem is that installing them on stock rom will cause multiple UI error messages.

Solved.
Get JB 4.1.2 from Telstra, look in Android development and flash it via RSD Lite, must be rooted and have alternative input method I use gmd gestures; Now use the buil.prop mod (qemu.hw.mainkeys=1) and U will have the status bar but not the navbar and no fc.
I have some issues with menu action (auto hiddes and must retry), solved with cm 10 instead of Telstra ROM, little more batt consumption and no blutooth music at the moment.
UPDATE: No need to use another ROM, In Telstra ROM go to config in Your phone, developer options, and check "Disable HW overlays", Ready!
You can use other ROM (4.1.2+) if U want, I like Telstra Rom cause it have good battery and all features in your cell phone works.
Does "Telstra" refer to the Austrailian mobile provider? I see articles that say Telstra pushed out 4.1.2 in mid-December. Is that what you're referencing? From what I'm reading it's not a custom ROM, more an upgrade to the stock ROM, right? If so, that seems like the right direction to me. If 4.1.2 means the build.prop modification will work without FCs and ONLY hide the navbar then finding the best (most stable and reliable) way to upgrade to 4.1.2 seems like the right goal. Is there a preferred link to get the right file(s) to do this upgrade?

[Q] I need a better clipboard functionality

One of the things that I loved about my ASUS Padfone 2 was the near stock UI.
The things that got changed by ASUS were mostly very useful, like the clipboard.
If I long pressed a textbox on my Padfone 2, the usual "paste" icon showed up accompanied by a second icon "clipboard".
When I clicked that icon, a panel slid up from where the keyboard normally is, which had the last copied elements as a small preview, with an additional button to edit the contents. In edit mode, I could delete elements or mark them as permanent (I guess the system would overwrite them when the cashe would be full at some point otherwise).
I miss that useful function on my Nexus 5.
Does anyone know a mod or custom ROM that does that?
I have looked into this on the play store, but the apps there require to run in the background or to switch to a third app to access the copied content.
You will have to look at the ROM feature list, but this is the first time that I have heard of this feature. If my memory is correct there aren't any ROMs with the feature but don't quote me. Third party app is your best alternative. This phone has 2GB of RAM it'll be ok in the background.
edit: You could also check xposed or make a request in the xposed thread.
I use clipper which is still a 3rd app but it works well for me. I use switchr to swipe in from the screen edge to access it.

Thanks for the replies.
I am not worried about the RAM running full, but I don't like to have any more notification icons than necessary.
Looks like I'll have to compromise clean look for functionality.
I wish google implemented the way ASUS did it into AOSP. It was really perfect.
Maybe Cyanogenmod will do this.
Thanks again for your comments.

Note pro 12.2 is it worth Rooting?

I have been using the device for a while right now and I saw a lot of topic about people talking about rooting the device. the question is, is it worth rooting? I don't actually see the need for that. So, if anyone can point out some major reason for rooting for me please?

I rooted mine only because I couldn't write to extSD as I bought it for reading eBooks which would be stored in extSD. I also freeze indexservice which drained the battery. Adaway is also another good reason to root.

It's totally subjective; if you don't see a need then don't worry about it. Sites like this though exist in part because there are many who do have a need/desire to take things further than stock is able to go.
Reason's for me to root include:
Freezing of stock applications I don't want loading at any time (stock browser, stock email, e-meeting, web-ex, group play, knox, magazine widgets, stock music app, netflix, ny times, remote pc, screen saver, side-sync are all frozen using titanium backup on my device).
Installing Xposed Framework to customize the tablet - disabled youtube ads, customized multi-window menus, per application display density/resolution control for greater leverage of screen real estate, status bar tweaks and notification tweaks to name a few)
Full greenify support through Xposed framework - ability to hybernate applications to keep memory use low and maximize battery life.
Button savior application - ability to quickly access home/back/menu buttons from the side of the tablet in landscape instead of having to use the built in capacitive ones.
Titanium backup - ability to keep a backup of my last couple of versions of each application so that should an app update produce results that i don't like I can easily revert to an older version.
As has been stated, allowing for write access to external microSD.
Just a few tweaks I've added to my tablet. I continue to experiment with xposed modules as time goes on. All subjective "needs".
Every reason listed below is why I need root on my VZW Tablet.

I rooted it to use adaway, xposed with wanam xposed module and to uninstall bloatware.
Don't forget about changing to what we're font you want.
Really, if you live to tinker, you have to root. If you are just a user (nothing wrong with that) then rooting may not mean anything to you.

Okay.. Can I borrow this thread a bit?
Can you change overall colour theme of NP? I have thought of buying one (LTE Model) and I just hate how it looks when settings, "drop down" notification bar etc.. are on white background. Is it possible change those to black like all AMOLED phones / tablets have?
Thanks.

Nope. With xposed framework you can install wanam module to ATTEMPT to do it. I say attempt because try as I might I could not change the color of the volume slider background. I posted a screenshot of my issue in the wanam thread but am not sure if it will be addressed in an update soon as I am not sure the developer has the means to look into it. We shall see, it's not like that module is updated frequently since it takes a lot of effort to find the settings in various versions of roms. If I had one complaint about the note pro it would be that the quick settings tiles and notification pull down is far too wasteful of screen real estate to the point that it's shameful. Tiles are huge on it and with the sliders extended one has to scroll frequently in landscape mode.

Not really, but with rooting, you will be able to install themes. There is currently one very interesting theme available for the Note 10.1, I am hoping a port may eventually become available for our device. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2687087
While the theme is "busy" compared to the Pro's generic white everywhere idea, it does harken back to the early days of Android hacking and the interesting icons which appeared. I'd probably give it a go on my Pro if it became available.
I too would like to theme my tablet. I like the look of some experia stuff quite a lot.

Has anyone tried to force it into tablet mode? I used to get a dropdown bar like the one on the note pro if I lowered my dpi on my note 2. Just in the middle. If you lowered it far enough and used a patch ui.apk you could get a tablet style menu bar on the note 2 (man I miss that)

Hide Softkeys?

LG, Huawei and a couple other companies have this feature baked into their take on Android, allowing you to hide softkeys on a per app basis. Anyone figured out a way to hide them on the Idol 3?

I think to hide the navigation bar you need root but I'm not sure. Have you tried doing a google search for "Hide Android navigation bar"? There's app on the play store but again they may need root and root has not yet been achieved.

There is an app in the Play Store, It works without root , and actually is not bad. The free version does not allow per-app setting. I tested it for a little while, and then uninstalled. I think I will keep the nav bar - since it hides or becomes transparent in videos and photos anyway. The browser is the only odd case - and I will live with it for now - actually the back button may come handy !

Yeah, I used GMD Auto Hide with the Z3 Compact and it worked flawlessly, but it doesn't seem to be too effective with my Idol. The time the softkeys bother me is during games that don't automatically put the screen into immersive mode, so not only do I usually accidentally touch one of the softkeys but it's also wasted screen real estate during gaming.
No one is currently working on this? This is surprising since soft keys are one of the most annoying things about the Idol 3. I'll hit up GMD Auto Hide Soft Keys developer and see what they can do to make this work for us!
Has anyone found a solution for this yet? I returned the phone after only a few hours because of this flaw. Extremely annoying feature. Takes a big
screen phone and makes it small again.
With root and xposed you can use the module "Hideable Nav Bar".

Man, I am living with this problem for more than half a year. I did find a somewhat tolerable solution - it is not exactly elegant but it might prove helpful. So yes, after playing with every possible parameter in settings , I also came to the conclusion that nothing really helps except keeping these apps minimized in the background. So I decided to just find a way to hide these minimized apps from the "recent apps" so that these don't interfere with my other activity.
Finally, I managed to find one humble app which does exactly that (you won't be able to find it by the name in Google Play, hence I provide the link).
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=comapede.app.versteckeapp
The instructions might not be exactly clear - you have to install the app then access the widgets from your home screen, identify the Hide App widget and drag it on the home screen. At this point you will be presented with the list of all apps on your device and you would need to chose the app you want to hide. After doing so, a widget for this specific app would be created (which looks identically to the app icon but works differently). First, make sure you discard the respective app from the recent apps, then, to enable hiding, every time you launch the app, you need to do it from the created widget (not from the icon). Obviously, you can repeat the action for all other apps you need to hide.
This worked reliably with Nova Launcher on Android 7 (EMUI 5.0) and continues to work after updating to Android 8 (EMUI 8.0). I also have Chinese ROM (not rooted).
As for the reason why this happens - I have no clue. I don't exclude that it is a software bug that is quite rare on honor 8 devices (otherwise I would see more people complaining).
There is an interesting aspect though - while I have been using my FB messenger for a while like this (this was the only way it worked), now I am able to access the app from its native icon and discard it from the recent apps and it still receives messages instantaneously (same about Skype, Viber). (I don't remember if this is related to the update). Yet for other apps, like KinScreen, Light Flow, ACR (Automatic Call Recorder) and many others, if I run the apps from their icons, the moment I discard them from recent apps, they are shut down completely.

Hopefully this works out for your

Yes, this can be really frustrating. For me it has been a series of missed Skype calls, which I happened to discover even after more than a week.
