I'm on 4.4.2, and I have really ugly color banding on my wallpaper. Apps look fine. Is everyone else having this issue? How about with 5.0.1?
Try to use "Native" color space instead of sRGB.

That's a darn fine idea. However, it did not fix the issue. Strange that it only seems to happen on wallpaper.
I should have mentioned that this is only on live wallpaper. I have tried every combination of things I can think of in the Shield Power Control menu also.
Screenshots?

Here is the live wallpaper from yowindow vs. the same image as seen from within the yowindow app.
I'd try getting a live wallpaper on your display that throws up that image (with some dynamic scrolling effect or something). That might be a one-off.

Do you guys have noticed that when you apply a wallpaper that is fully black, the color on top where the status bar is is grey? It is even more noticeable when you hide the status bar in Nova launcher than there is a grey bar on top of the screen. Now I don't know if that has to do with the aspect ratio but it is not so nice to look at in my opinion.

It's normal. It's some sort of statusbar shade so that it's easier to see the statusbar on lighter wallpapers.
There's also one at the bottom where you usually swipe to open the app drawer.
Okay tnx but I haven't noticed it before on my S5.

I too had this problem with my s6 and now with s8+. I mainly noticed when i changed the themes with Nova launcher. But the thing worked for me is to apply wallpaper from Nova launcher(long press on home screen > wallpaper > choose). Almost every time this worked for me but u can try by switching the applying process from Gallery and from Nova launcher alternatively.

If you downloaded one from google search it could be an improper resolution. try search 2 ,WALLPAPERYOUWANT 2960x1440 then click the images or look for it to say that resolution in image details
example
Dragon Ball Super 2960x1440 if x doesnt work try * 2960*1440
Tnx! I fixed it with adding shadow on top and bottom in Nova settings

Have the same problem. With black wallpaper it is light at the top. With light wallpaper it is dark at the top. Wtf Samsung !!!!
SOLVED!
Hey there this threat is pretty old but I'll put it out there just in case anyone else is having the same grey status bar shade while using black wallpapers which I'm sure are still out there. So here's the fix I just figured and hopes it helps other. It's simple really! Apparently samsung has this irritating thing on the s7 and s8 I guess. So to fix it, just download samsung's goodlock app, install it. When your phone comes back on after the compulsory reboot, then navigate to "advanced" on the goodlock settings disable status bar dim background. That's all! Apply your black wallpapers and enjoy your amoled screens! Please share if it helped you.

Well, this doesn't look like it's working for note 5 or the APK doesn't download\work anymore. APK parse error when installing. I've gotten the apk from multiple locations with no luck. GRR, this is frustrating. I've also tried multiple launchers thinking it was that, with no luck. The suggesting to use the shadow settings in Nova don't work either.
Any other options?
With the google launcher on the pixel 2: if you have a black wallpaper the theme turns black, if you have a lighter wallpaper the theme goes with white theme, i would like to see a live wallpaper that shifts from a light background durning the day and at night the live wallpaper goes dark, so this way i can see it in the sunlight but at night its soft black and easy on the eyes. I know other launchers give you these settings, but would really like to see this work with the google launcher. any one have a live wallpaper or mod that can make this happen with the google launcher.

This might work.
Create a folder and place a light and and dark wallpaper in there.
Download Muzei en set the source to the folder you created.
Set the refresh time to 12 hours or something. And you'll have a decent interval.
FYI - the Pixel 2 reverts to a light theme anytime a live wallpaper is used. Even if the wallpaper is dark in color.

Yeah, I later realized it's only for certain live wallpapers. Not sure why though
Anyone know of a dark theme for Google Voice and Google Home? They are too white and bright at night.
You could try "Material Islands" live wallpaper. It changes from light to dark throughout the day
If you are rooted there is a sort of trick.
There is an app called "Pixel Launcher Mods" (here), and when you turn on night light you can force the dark theme.
Then simply set auto night light at some time, for example in the evening, so it will auto-shift to night light and also dark theme without have to change wallpaper.
I find this very useful.
For those who aren't on root and like to use a live wallpaper that won't apply the dark theme, but still want it (like me), an okay, but sometimes jarring alternative is to set Invert Colors in the pulldown quick tiles and just manually turn it on when needed. It's not the best solution, but it's something.
Hi,
Do you also get a purple effect while on lock screen after pie update? And it goes back to normal only while unlocked ?
I'm thinking about reset the phone already...
That is an android pie feature.
It depends on the wallpaper main colour. Try to change it and you will see that it changes.

It's implemented by HTC, found a wallpaper that it doesn't happen.
I use the day/night automatic change wallpaper feature.
During the day, I have configured one with red and orange colours so the effect is red/pink.
During night I have configured one with blue and the effect is blue (light blue, in fact).
I think is quite cool this effect.
i don't get it can you show me a video of this effect

Try the following atachments "tech" as your lockscreen wallpaper and the other one(Harley Quinn) as your "desktop" wallpaper.
Then lock your phone... You'll see it get purple..
I still didn't switch to the P7P, I noticed yesterday that statusbar is dark like in older Android phones which is a deal breaker for me who like to enjoy landscape wallpapers.
Can you easily remove this dark tint?

I don't know where you saw that but my Pixel 7 Pro doesn't have a dark status bar. It is completely transparent?

Maybe they saw someone using a different launcher and it had shadow on it.
The app "Nacho Notch" also sets the status bar black for those that don't like the camera cutout (Notch) in the wallpaper.
Nova will allow you to make the status bar black if you want.
